doten.jpg (6911 bytes)Frank B. Doten age 72 of St. Johns died Saturday, June 28, 2003 at Hazel I. Findlay Country Manor in St. Johns, Michigan. Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, July 2, 2003 at 10:00 A. M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Johns Chapel. Pastor Paul Daniels will officiate and burial will take place at Riverside Cemetery in Elsie, Michigan. Visitation will be Tuesday from 2-8 P.M. with family present 2-4 & 6-8 P.M.

Frank was born to Frank V. and Lucile Mary ( Baese ) Doten on February 23, 1931 in Elsie, Michigan. He lived the past 15 years at Hazel I. Findlay Country Manor in St. Johns. Frank enjoyed and participated in the activities at Hazel I. Findlay Country Manor and also helped establish the Coffee Corner and delivered papers to the residents for many years.

Survivors include his two sisters, Marilyn & Ken Gove of Wakefield, Rhode Island, Carolyn & Roger Feeman of St. Johns, Michigan; he is also survived by many nieces & nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Frank V. Doten & Lucile Mary Bauder, and his stepfather, Lawren Bauder.

Memorials can be made to Hazel I. Findlay Country Manor in St. Johns, Michigan. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Johns Chapel.

William J. "Bill" Smith

Westphalia, MI Age 69, died June 27, 2003. Born February 10, 1934 in Portland the son of Julius and Julia (Feldpausch) Smith. Bill retired in 1991 from Fisher Body after 35 1/2 years of faithful service and was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church of Westphalia and the St. Joseph Society.

Surviving are his wife of 40 years, Christine (Theis); 3 daughters, Debbie (Dave) Schneider, Tina (Bill)Schneider and Amy (Jim) Pohl all of Westphalia; 1 son, Kevin Smith of Westphalia; 7 grandchildren, Hilary, Kambria, Renae, Mara, Mason, Mallory and Jarrett; 4 brothers, George, Dick, Joe (Rosella) and Chuck; 5 sisters, Rosie Simon, Helen (Bob) Simon, Ruth (Al) Hengesbach, Jean VanOstran and Julie (Dan) Leonard; brother-in-law, Ford Scheurer; sister-in-law, Gail Smith. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers, John and Leo and 2 sisters, Viola and Rita.

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, July 1, 10:30 AM at St. Mary Catholic Church, 201 N. Westphalia St., Westphalia, MI with Father Cecilio C. Reyna, Pastor, officiating. The Rite of Committal will be in St. Mary Catholic Cemetery, Westphalia. The family will receive friends at the St. Mary Chapel, 210 N. Westphalia Street Sunday and Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM with the Rosaries being recited Sunday and Monday at 3 and 8 PM. In lieu of flowers, those desiring may make contributions to the Father Al Miller Fund in memory of Bill. The family is being served by the Gorsline-Runciman Co. Lansing Chapel

Gifford L. Knudsen

Gifford L. Knudsen,  DeWitt, MI Age 80, died June 26, 2003. Born August 11, 1922 in Sister Bay, WI. Mr. Knudsen retired in 1985 as the Director of Bank and Trust Division, Financial Institution, Bureau Department of Commerce with the State of Michigan. He was a Veteran of WWII, stationed in the South Pacific with the 5th Fighter Command. He was a member of the Edwin J. Leyanna VFW Post #671, DeWitt, Wacousta-DeWitt Lodge #359 F & AM, Wacousta Chapter #133 OES and Grace Lutheran Church. He was an avid U of M fan and golfer. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Thelma Syrjanen.

Surviving are his wife, Sarah (Tourtellotte); 3 daughters, Ellen (Nathan) Flanders of Mulliken, Myrna (Charles) Hallman of DeWitt and Marie (Tim) Teske of South Haven; 5 grandchildren, Rachel (Jim) Weinert, Douglas Mayhew, Richard and Rebecca Hallman and Samantha Flanders; 3 great-grandchildren, Alex, Kendra and Nichole Weinert; brother, Herbert (Doris) Knudsen of Kingsford; sister, Ada (Herbert) Christesen of Iron Mt; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held Monday, June 30, 10 AM at the Gorsline-Runciman Co. DeWitt Chapel, 111 S. Franklin, DeWitt, with the Rev. Alan Kamens, Pastor of Grace Lutheran Church, the Rev. Terry Williamson, Pastor of Christ United Church and the Rev. Gerald Christesen, retired, officiating. Interment will follow in DeWitt Cemetery, DeWitt with Military services provided by the Edwin J. Leyanna VFW Post #671, DeWitt. The family will receive friends at the Chapel Sunday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM. Those desiring may make contributions to Hospice of Clinton Memorial and Sparrow, P.O. Box 30480, Lansing, MI 48909 or Grace Lutheran Church, 528 Martin Luther King Blvd., Lansing, MI 48915 in memory of Mr. Knudsen.

Joseph John Humenik

humenik.jpg (8695 bytes)Joseph John Humenik died Wednesday, June 25, 2003, at the age of 69.  Joe was born in Duquesne, Pennsylvania on August 6, 1933, the son of Joseph and Mary (Klems) Humenik, Sr. He retired from the St. Johns Reminder and was formerly employed at Dean’s Hardware and Ranch Roller Rink.  He was a founding member of the St. Johns Mint Festival steering committee, a former member of the St. Johns Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors, Knights of Columbus, Jaycees, Kiwanis and Lions Clubs.  Joe was fondly called Santa by children and parents for over 30 years, was a teller of “true stories” and enjoyed fishing.  He delighted in his family and was an avid Notre Dame fan.

He married Theresa “Terry” (Warner) Rogers on May 30, 1986 and she survives him.

Joe is survived by his children, Mark Humenik of Grand Rapids, Mike and Becky Humenik of Macomb and Kathy and Neil Putnam of Laingsburg, five grandchildren, Makayla and Nicholas Putnam, Ryan, Austin and Gabrielle Humenik, brother, David Humenik of Naperville, Illinois, sister, Rose Mary Malesic of West Mifflin, Pennsylvania and sister-in-law, Sally Humenik of Great Mills, Maryland.  He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, William Humenik.

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:00 A.M. Monday, June 30, 2003 at the Catholic Community of St. Jude, DeWitt, burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery with Rev. Fr. Dwight Ezop and Rev. Fr. Larry Delaney officiating. The family will receive friends 1-3 and 6-8 P.M. Saturday and 1-3 P.M. Sunday at the Osgood Funeral Home, St. Johns, and 6-8 P.M. Sunday at St. Jude’s with a vigil service at 7 P.M.  In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials be made to St. Jude’s Building Fund or Loaves and Fishes Homeless Shelter.

Evelyn L. Teelander

Evelyn L. Teelander, 91, of Elsie, formerly of Cadillac, died June 26, 2003 at Hospice House in Lansing. She was born Feb. 5, 1912 in Tustin, Mich., the daughter of Samuel and Mary (Cooper) Marks.

She married Forest E. Teelander Jan. 17, 1932 at Bowling Green, Ohio. He preceded her in death Feb. 12, 1989.

She is survived by her children, Gary (Helen) Teelander of Custer, Carl (Sharon) Teelander of Elsie and Bonnie Sepkoski of Lansing; nine grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; six step-great grandchildren; sister, Gladys Rutkoskey of Grand Rapids.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a daughter, Beverly, grandson, a son-in-law, a brother and a sister.

Funeral services were held June 28 at Peterson Funeral Home, Cadillac with Rev. Edwin Noren officiating. Burial was at Sherman Township Cemetery.

James C. Black

James C. Black, 75, of Okeechobee, Fla., died Aug. 16, 2002 at Susan's Country Manor. He was born Sept. 8, 1926 in Detroit, the son of Roy and Eleanor Carlton Black. He lived in Lapeer, from 1948 to 1985.

Mr. Black and his wife, June, were extremely active members of Grace Episcopal Church. They were winter residents of Bradenton, Fla., and summer residents of Perrinton for 17 years.

He was preceded in death by his wife, June Black, and an infant son, Wright Black.

Survivors include two sons, Jeff (Raia) Black of Okeechobee and Colby (Paula) Black of Frostproof, Fla.; one daughter, Candice (Paul) Walker of Okeechobee; seven grandchildren, James Black, Kristan and Kara Black, Evelyn and Beth Walker, Amanda and Casey Black; brother, Richard (Jeanne) Black of Grand Rapids; sister, Jean (Rick) Morgan of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; and two sisters-in-law, Judy Warner and Naomi Wright, both of Perrinton.

A graveside memorial service and interment was held June 28 at the Fulton Center Cemetery, Perrinton. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Okeechobee, P.O. Box 1548, Okeechobee, Fla., 34973. Arrangements were by the Buxton Funeral Home and Crematory.
