Donald R. Hecht

Donald R. Hecht, age 80, passed away on Wednesday, July 30, 2003 at Sparrow Hospital. Donald was born on December 12, 1922 to Karl L. and Vera G. (Eisler) Hecht. His memberships included; First Congregational Church, Farm Bureau and Banner Grange. Donald was a farmer for 65 years and worked for Golden Harvest as a Seed Dealer for 20 years. He married Georgene (Acker) Hecht on August 9, 1942 in St. Johns. 

He is survived by his wife, Georgene of St. Johns, two daughters, Janice Quist of Byron Center, Joanne Carson of Shepherd, three grandchildren, Greg Quist, Lisa Quist, Christopher Carson, one sister, Gertrude Lomason of Oxford. His parents preceded Donald in death. 

Funeral services will be 3:00 P.M. Saturday, August 2, 2003 at Osgood Funeral Home, burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery with Reverend Matt Olson officiating. The family will receive friends Friday 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to charity of your choice.

Doris A. Shong

shong.jpg (6835 bytes)Doris A. Shong age 81 of St. Johns, Michigan died Sunday, July 27, 2003 at Hazel Findley Country Manor in St. Johns.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 30, 2003 at 11:00 A. M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Johns Chapel. Pastor Larry Howland will officiate and burial will take place at Mt. Rest Cemetery in St. Johns, Michigan. Visitation will be Tuesday evening from 6-8 P.M.

Doris was born on March 12, 1922 in Wheeler, Michigan the daughter of Floyd & Louise ( Miller ) Randall. On May 12, 1956 she married Richard Shong in Portland, Michigan, Richard died October 27, 2000. She resided most of her life in the Portland, Michigan area and was a life member of the VFW Auxiliary in Lake Odessa, Michigan. Doris retired from Chrysler Corporation in 1979.

Survivors include her 3 children; Jane Scutt of Portland, Michigan, Jim & Sharon Adair of St. Johns, Michigan, Bill & Pam Adair of St. Johns, Michigan, 3 stepchildren, Mr. & Mrs. Tom Shong of Greenville, Michigan, Dennis & May Shong of Lake Odessa, Michigan, David & Pam Shong of Kentucky, Several grand and great grandchildren, 1 sister, Rita Blanshine of Allegan, Michigan, several nieces & nephews including 2 special nieces, Brenda Gary & Linda Kruger.

She was predeceased by her parents, Husband & sisters & brothers. Memorials can be made to the family. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Johns Chapel.

Ellen M. Raymer

raymer.jpg (6964 bytes)Ellen M. Raymer age 87 of Elsie, Michigan died Saturday, July 26, 2003 at her home. She was a homemaker and a retired cook from the Ovid-Elsie Area Schools.

Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, July 29, 2003 at 11:00 A.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie, Michigan. Pastor William Stites will officiate with burial at Duplain Township Cemetery, Rochester Colony, Michigan. Visitation will be Sunday from 5-8 P.M. & Monday from 2-8 P.M. with family present from 2-4 & 6-8 P.M.

Ellen was born on May 8, 1916 in Isabella County, Michigan the daughter of Marion & Martha (Peffer) Brininstool. On July 17, 1943 she married Clifford Raymer in Lansing, Michigan. He died on October 2, 1997. Ellen was a member of the Fenmore Baptist Church of Elsie, Michigan. She was also a member of the Ladies Aid Society at the church. She had resided in the Elsie Area since 1969 moving from Eaton Rapids, Michigan.

Survivors include: 7 daughters; Anita Gordos & friend Dick McManus, Jackie & Burt Warner, Connie Corbin, Sandra & Bill Frasher, Mary & Al Glassbrook, Ruth Ann & Ron Thornton, & Jeanne Raymer & friend Bill Francis. 2 sons; Jim Raymer & friend Frazier Mitchell & Randy Raymer. 1 stepson. 37 grandchildren, 57 great grandchildren & 5 great-great grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her parents, husband, 2 sons; Donald Cady, Jr. & Bill Raymer, 9 brothers & sisters, 4 sons-in-law & 1 daughter-in-law.
The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel.

Peter James Edinger

Peter James Edinger died unexpectedly July 26, 2003 at the age of 57. Pete was born June 28, 1946 in Lansing, Michigan the son of James and Marcella (Brown) Edinger of Fowler.  He was retired from General Motors. 

Pete is survived by his parents and three sisters, Marcia (Peter) Schmitz, Ellen (Lloyd) Watson, both of Lansing and Ann (Bruce) Menerey of Dimondale, two nieces, Sue (Mark) Shulick and Melissa Menerey, six nephews, Michael (Diana) Schmitz, Todd (Kim) Falor, Daniel (Kristie) Falor, David Falor, William (Jen) Watson and Barney (Amy) Watson.

The Funeral Liturgy will be 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, July 29, 2003 at the Goerge Chapel of Osgood Funeral Homes, Fowler, burial at Most Holy Trinity Cemetery with the Rev. Fr. Timothy MacDonald officiating.  The family will receive friends 2-4 & 7-9 Monday at the funeral home with rosaries prayed at 3:00 & 8:00.  A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at a later date.   Sympathy may be expressed in the form of memorials to Hospice of Clinton County in memory of Peter.

Beatrice Grams

Grams-Beatrice.jpg (8323 bytes)Beatrice Grams died Saturday, July 26, 2003 at the age of 84.  She was born November 6, 1918 in St. Louis, Michigan, the daughter of Arthur and Gladys (Baney) Post.  Beatrice was a member of Pilgrim United Methodist Church and former member of the Farm Bureau, Maple Twirlers Square Dancing and a 4H Leader.  She married Edward O. Grams August 27, 1938 and he preceded her in death November 23, 1989. 

Beatrice is survived by two sons, E. Robert (Karen) Grams of St. Johns and Duane (Marlene) Grams of Edmore, seven grandchildren, Terri (Eric) Harger, Lorin (Katie) Grams of St. Johns, Marc Grams of Lansing, Matthew Grams of Harrisville, Tammie Jo (Roger) Adams of Blanchard, Garrett Grams of St. Johns and Meghan Grams of Edmore, five great grandchildren, Clayton and Bryce Harger, Tatum Grams, Melissa Adams and Roger Adams, Jr., two brothers, Arthur (Delores) Post and Wilbur (Rosemary) Post of Texas.  In addition to her husband, Beatrice was preceded in death by her parents, a great granddaughter, Payton Grams and one sister, Helen Hocktel.

The Funeral Service will be 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, July 30, 2003 at Pilgrim United Methodist Church, burial at South Bingham Cemetery with Pastor Merlin Pratt officiating.  The family will receive friends 6-8 Monday and 2-4 & 6-8 Tuesday at the Osgood Funeral Home.  Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer Association or Pilgrim United Methodist Church.

Vivian Martha Ott

Vivian Martha Ott died Saturday, July 26, 2003 at the age of 85.  She was born September 3, 1917 in Ironwood, Michigan and was a retired Clinton National Bank & Trust accounting manager. 

Vivian is survived by her husband of 60 years, Robert J. Ott of St. Johns, one son, Randall (Mary) Ott, two grandchildren, Robert R. (Andrea) Ott and Michelle Ott, all of Holt and four great grandchildren. 

Private Family Christian Funeral Services will be held. The family would like to thank the staff of Great Lakes Home Health Care for their care of Vivian in her time of need & especially Dr. Rajesh for his excellent services rendered.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Clinton Memorial Hospital, Ovid Healthcare or Hazel Findlay Manor.  Arrangements by the Osgood Funeral Home, St. Johns.

Willis J.  Hettler

Hettler, Sr. died Friday, July 25, 2003 at th age of 98.  He was born June 28, 1905, in Dallas Township, Michigan, the son of Joseph J. & Cora (Sage) Hettler and lived most of his life in the St. Johns area.  He was a member of Blue Lodge # 105 for 72 years, Royal Arch # 45, Knights Templer # 24, Life member Elf Khurafeh Shrine, Valley of Bay City Consistory & Houghton & Higgins Elks # 1982.  He owned Hettler Motor Sales in St. Johns for 61 years.  Willis started as a small gas station owner and ended as a Chrysler-Plymouth Dealer retiring in August of 1986.  He married Inez (Bobbie) McClow May 30, 1926, the marriage ended with her death in May 1976.  He then married Marguerite (Serviss) Rosekrans on May 6, 1985 in Findlay, OH and she preceded him in death August 10, 2000. 

Willis is survived by a daughter, Joyce (Paul) Buehler, a son, Willis J."Junior" Hettler and special friend, JoAnn Cadreau, all of St. Johns, two step daughters Barbara (Jerry) Barnes of Mason, Virginia (Leslie) Barnes of Chesaning, 6 grandchildren, 5 step grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, 10 step great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by a brother Carl in 1949 and a step granddaughter Jodi in 1972. 

Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, July 29, 2003 at the Osgood Funeral Home, burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery with Rev. Steve Weinberger officiating.   The family will receive friends 6-8 Sunday and 2-4 & 6-8 Monday with a Masonic Service 7:30 P.M. Monday.  Memorials may be made to the Shrine Crippled Childrens Fund.

Dean J. Kieffer

kieffer.jpg (7621 bytes)Dean J. Kieffer, 49, died July 24, 2003 at Ingham Regional Medical Center in Lansing after a short courageous battle with leukemia. Funeral services will be Friday, August 1, 2003 at 1:00 P.M. from Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Johns Chapel. Visitation will be Thursday, July 31, 2003 from 2-8 P.M. with family present 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. Rev. Tom Wilson will officiate.

Dean was born December 27, 1953, in St. Johns, the son of Richard and Bernadine (Leavitt) Kieffer. He lived in St. Johns his entire life. He was employed as an automobile repairman for almost 31 years with the General Motors Corporation in Lansing.

Dean graduated from St. Johns High School in 1972. He married his high school sweetheart Janet DeWitt in St. Johns on November 3, 1973. This November would have been 30 years of marriage.

His main interests in life involved cars and drag racing. All 3 of his sons are regular competitors at the Mid-Michigan Motorplex (Stanton). Up until the time of his illness, Dean was there on a regular basis to oversee and support his son’s efforts in a sport he loved. His fabrication and mechanical skills were broad. Son Scott competes in a beautiful 1955 Chevy racecar that Dean owned, built, and painted himself. The family plans to continue to race the car in his memory.

Surviving are his wife, Janet; 3 wonderful sons, Scott of Ferndale and Bryan and Jason of St. Johns; his mother, Bernadine Kieffer of St. Johns; 1 brother, Bruce Kieffer of St. Johns; many other family members and great friends. His father, Richard Kieffer and his close canine companion, Ted, preceded Dean in death.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Leukemia Research Foundation. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Johns Chapel.

Richard W. "Dick" Ely

Richard W. "Dick" Ely,  Maple Rapids, MI died Thursday, July 24, 2003 at the age of 78. He was born September 7, 1924 in Lansing, MI the son of Walter O. and Edna (Bennett) Ely. Dick retired from Oldsmobile after 28 years of service and was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Navy Submarines. Dick married Lena Zittle on March 17, 1946 in Middleton, MI.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Lena Ely of Maple Rapids; 6 children, Lynnette Suggitt of British Columbia, Canada, William (Kathy) Ely of Mesick, MI, Becky Lindstrom of Okemos, MI, Pam (Dirk) Bruinsma of San Clemente, CA, Jennifer (Rick) Kuhn of Collinsville, AL and Richard (Terry) Ely of Brethren, MI; 19 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers and 2 sisters.

The Funeral Service will be 1 PM Saturday, July 26, 2003 at the Abbott Chapel of Osgood Funeral Homes, Maple Rapids, with Rev. Steve Weinberger officiating. Memorials may be made to Briggs Public Library or the charity of your choice.

Clarence William Temple

temple.jpg (6331 bytes)Clarence William Temple age 92 of St. Johns, Michigan passed away Wednesday, July 23, 2003 at his home. He was a respected farmer in the Colony community. He acquired the nickname “The Colonel” by his friends. His love was his land. He was always proud of the way he developed, organized, farmed, and hunted it.

Funeral services will be held Monday, July 28, 2003 at 11:00 A.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel. Pastor Larry Howland will officiate with burial at Duplain Cemetery, Rochester Colony, Michigan. Visitation will be Sunday evening from 6-8 P.M.

Clarence was born on April 11, 1911 in Duplain Township, Clinton County, Michigan, the son of Ralph E. and Gertrude (Gilbreath) Temple. On March 23, 1938 he married Florence Amelia Sager and they had four sons. They were married almost 64 years prior to her death in 2002. He was an active member of the Spile Dam Club and the Grange Organization in his earlier days. He lived in Duplain Township all of his life.

He is survived by 3 sons, Dean & Jeanette Temple of St. Johns, MI, Ralph & Darlene Temple of Lansing, MI, Wallace & Yue Temple of Riverside, CA, 1 daughter in law, Darl Temple of Kansas City, MO, 11 grandchildren, Jennifer, Blake, Matthew, Brandon, Joshua, Kyle, Todd, and Troy Temple, Tiffany Herrmann, Tonya Francis, and Heidi Collings, 2 stepgrandchildren, Jason Ruppert and Becky Merchand, 9 great grandchildren and 4 step-great grandchildren, 1 sister, Dr. Lowell and Mrs. Kathleen Webb of New Lenox, IL. He was predeceased by his parents, his wife, Florence, a son, Ronald, and siblings, Harold, Lee, Letha Temple, and Cordelia Martin.
