Don Stewart

Don Stewart died September 21, 2003 at the age of 87. He was born in Essex Township on July 16, 1916, the son of Isaac and Florence (Ellis) Stewart. He was a retired farmer. Don married Geraldine E. Doyle in St. Johns on April 15, 1941 and she preceded him in death on January 10, 1995. 

Surviving are his son, Jeffrey H. “Jeff” (Laurene) Stewart of Muskegon, five grandchildren, one brother, Richard (Gaila) Stewart of Lakeview and one sister-in-law, Maxine Walton of St. Johns. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents. 

Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M. Friday, September 26, 2003 at the Osgood Funeral Home, burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery with Rev. Steve Weinberger officiating. The family will receive friends 7-9 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Hospice for Clinton County. 

Esther O'Connell

Esther O'Connell,  Hubbardston, MI Age 86, died Sunday, September 21, 2003 at Hazel I. Findley Country Manor. She was born September 2, 1917 in Hubbardston, the daughter of Dennis and Bertha (Welch) O'Connell. She grew up in Hubbardston and then moved to Detroit to work for Mistle Coal Company. She moved back to Hubbardston in 1953 and began working for Capital Savings and Loan in Lansing. She worked there for 45 years, retiring in 1999 at the age of 81.

Esther is survived by her sister, Dorothy (Isidore) Rademacher of St. Johns; brother, Edward O'Connell of Fowler; 4 nieces; 2 nephews; and 1 great-niece and 1 great-nephew.

A Memorial Mass will be held Thursday, September 25, 2003 at 11 AM at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Hubbardston, with Fr. William Reitz officiating. Interment will be in St. John the Baptist Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 10 am until time of service at the church. Memorial contributions may be made for masses or the charity of the donor's choice. Arrangements are being handled by the Lux and Schnepp Funeral Home in Carson City.

Roger G. Dowell

Dowell-Roger.jpg (8021 bytes)Roger G. Dowell, age 67, died on Saturday, September 20, 2003 at his home. Roger was born on August 23, 1936 in Lansing. He was a former Motor Wheel employee. He was known as a special Grampa to the children of Maple Rapids. 

Roger is survived by two daughters, Betty (David) Gamble of Maple Rapids and Norma (Donald) Voyer of Florida, two grandsons, Jeremy and Mark Gamble of Maple Rapids, two brothers, Robert (Bonnie) Dowell of Florida, George (Rose) Dowell of Ionia, one sister, Nancy (Donald) Barnard of Arkansas. Roger was preceded in death by his wife, Sue (Vermillion) Dowell, daughter, Mary Dowell, a son, Roger B. Dowell, a brother, Don Dowell, and a sister, Betty Hoagg. 

Funeral will be 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, September 23, 2003 at the Abbott Chapel of Osgood Funeral Homes, burial at Pleasant Hill Cemetery  with Pastor Hugh Banninga officiating. The family will receive friends Monday 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Congregational Church of Maple Rapids.  

Elizabeth K. Bancroft

Elizabeth K. Bancroft, 93, of Petoskey, died Sept. 16, 2003 at Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey. Elizabeth was born March 8, 1910 in St. Johns, the daughter of Robert and Ethel (Finch) Kelly.

She grew up in St. Johns and attended the University of Michigan and received her dental hygienist certificate.

She married Carl Bancroft in Sarasota, Fla. He preceded her in death.

Elizabeth moved to Sarasota in 1970 and lived there until 1998 when she moved to Petoskey. She has lived at Independence Village since moving to Petoskey.

Elizabeth loved to play bridge, but most of all she enjoyed her family and friends. She was a life member of O.E.S. #79, volunteered at Sarasota Memorial Hospital, was a member of Sarah DeSoto Chapter of NSDAR, and a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church.

Elizabeth is survived by two daughters, Jean (Dick) Weaver of Indian River, and Patricia Gomulinski of Petersburg; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three brothers, John, Edward and James Kelly.

Memorial services were held Sept. 20, at Independence Village with Fr. Jack Myers officiating. Arrangements were handled by Stone Funeral Home.
