Gertrude B. Eick

Gertrude B. Eick , 96, retired St. Johns teacher, died Monday. Memorial services 11 a.m. Friday at First Congregational Church, St. Johns. Arrangements by Osgood Funeral Home, St. Johns.

Laura Diane Chunko

Laura Diane Chunko died unexpectedly Monday, October 13, 2003 at the age of 57.  She was born February 7, 1946 in St. Johns, Michigan the daughter of Irving and Anna-Marie (Tinklepaugh) Arnett, Sr. and lived in St. Johns most of her life.  She was an Ovid-Elsie Public School bus driver and a member of the First Congregational Church in St. Johns.  On November 26, 1966 she Laura married John Chunko and he survives her.

Also surviving is a son, William (Heather) Chunko of St. Johns, three daughters, Stephanie (Brian) Barnett of St. Johns, Stacie (Jerry) Stevens of Ovid and Susan (Kerry) LeRoy of St. Johns, grandchildren, Ken Chunko, Jeramy Chunko, Jacob LeRoy, Hunter & Brandon Chunko, Stephanie Barnett, Becca & Trevor Stevens.  She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Jimmy & Irving Arnett, Jr.

Funeral Services will be 11:00 A.M. Friday at the Osgood Funeral Home in St. Johns.  The family will receive friends 5-9 P.M. Wednesday and 2-4 & 6-8 Thursday at the funeral home.  Memorials may be made to Ele's Place.

Norman L. Woodbury

Woodbury  died Sunday, October 12, 2003 at the age of 76.  He was born in Lansing, Michigan on October 22, 1926, the son of Charley and Lulu (Ritter) Woodbury.  He was retired from Oldsmobile, a member of the St. Johns Lutheran Church and lived most of his life in St. Johns. Norman was an M.P. in the  US Army during WWII serving in the Phillipines.  He loved hunting, fishing & farming.  Norman married Phyllis Hyler on November 1, 1947 and she survives him.

Also surviving are two daughters, Pamela (Tony) Burtovoy of Dimondale and Lori (fiance, Ron Souza) Fuhr of Portland, one son, Kurt (Gloria) Woodbury of St. Johns, five grandchildren, six great grandchildren, three brothers, Gerald (Alma) Woodbury, Alan (Joy) Woodbury, all of St. Johns and Chan (Jan) Woodbury of Wyoming State, three sisters, Marge (Larry) Ozanich of Lansing, Marilyn (Hub) Waite of Dewitt, and Linda (Elvin) Wieber of Grand Ledge, sister-in-law, Gerry Woodbury of California, several nieces and nephews.   He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Vern Woodbury and a nephew, Alan "Beaver" Woodbury, Jr.

Funeral Services will be 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, October 15, 2003 at the St. Johns Lutheran Church, burial in Mt. Rest Cemetery with Pastor Jeffrey Heimsoth officiating.  The family will receive friends 2-4 & 6-8 Tuesday at the Osgood Funeral Home.  Memorials may be made to Sparrow Home Care Network-Clinton Team.

Richard Cyril Reha

reha.jpg (6603 bytes)Richard Cyril Reha age 70 of Elsie, Michigan died Thursday, October 9, 2003 at Clinton Memorial Hospital, St. Johns, Michigan. He was a cash crop, and was a dairy farmer and he also drove truck.

Funeral Services will be held Monday, October 13, 2003 at 10:00 A.M. at St. Cyril’s Catholic Church, Bannister, Michigan. Rev. Fr. Max Frego & Rev. Fr. Clarence Smolinski will officiate with burial at Riverside Cemetery in Elsie, Michigan. Rosary will be prayed Sunday Evening at 6:00 P.m. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie, Michigan. Visitation will be Saturday from 6-8 P.m. and Sunday 2-8 P.m. with family present from 2-4 & 6-8 P.m.

Richard was born on January 5, 1933 in Chapin Township, Michigan the son of John and Mary (Palatka) Reha. On March 22, 1952 he married Delain Thiel at United Brethren Church in Brady Township. She died on April 16, 1990. On December 19, 1992 he married Ruth Ann Angst at Our Lady Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Chesaning, Michigan. Richard attended the St. Cyril’s Catholic Church in Bannister, Michigan. He had resided most of his life in the Elsie area.

Survivors include his wife; Ruth Ann Angst-Reha, two sons; Keith & Milissa Reha of Ovid, Michigan, Cayle & Donna Reha of Elsie, Michigan, one daughter Robin & Joe Fabus of Elsie, Michigan, two stepsons; Gary & Pam Angst of Owosso, Michigan, Kurt & Kateri Angst of St. Charles, Michigan, one stepdaughter; Kim & Jim Turner. He is also survived by eight grandchildren; Kevin, Amanda, Nicholas, Jessica, Joey, Jason, C.J., Kirtis, two great-grandsons Tanner & Joey, ten step grandchildren, one sister; Dorothy & Melvin Martinka of Ashley, Michigan, one brother; Raymond & Helen Reha of Elsie, Michigan, he is also survived by many brother & sister in-laws.

He was predeceased by his parents, wife Delain, two brothers; John & Edward Reha, and one granddaughter; Heather Reha.. Memorials may be made to St. Cyril’s Catholic Church, ZCBJ Lodge #225, or a Charity of Donor’s Choice. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel.

Roland "Ron" Snyder

Roland "Ron" Snyder,  DeWitt Township, MI Passed away on October 9, 2003, at the age of 68. Ron was born on July 26, 1935 in Lansing, MI, where he lived most of his life except for the time stationed with the Army in Germany from 1954-1957. He was with the 7th Army Symphony and Soldier Show Company. He managed a jazz orchestra as they traveled across Europe, and he entertained troops as a solo banjo artist. Ron had been an aircraft mechanic, worked on guided missiles and had retired from the U.S. Postal Service. He enjoyed playing with many musical groups in the area, including, the Gemtones, Social Security Scandals and the Lansing Ramblers Dixieland Band. Dixieland music was his first love, but he also loved comedy and was adept at playing the "country bumpkin" later amazing his audience with his banjo playing ability. Ron was always ready to volunteer his musical talent with various service groups. He was past Commander of the V.F.W. Edwin J. Leyanna Post #671, DeWitt, and was a brilliant artist, working in all media. Ron was a member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association.

He will be missed by Lahta, a child adopted through the Christian Children's Fund. Ron was preceded in death by his parents, Clayton and Agnes Snyder. He is survived by his wife, Birthe; brothers, Jack (Marijune), Gaylord (Geraldine) and Wendell (June); sisters, Lois (Everett) Downing, Betty (Estol) Swem, Karen (Tom) Domanski; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, October 14, at 10 AM at the Gorsline-Runciman Co. Lansing Chapel, 900 E. Michigan Ave., Lansing, with the Rev. Errol Jameson. Interment will follow in Mt. Rest Cemetery, St. Johns, with Military Graveside Services being provided by the V.F.W. Edwin J. Leyanna Post #671, DeWitt. The family will receive friends at the Chapel on Sunday from 6-8 PM and on Monday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM.

Stanley N. "Steve"  Schafer

Stanley N. "Steve"  Schafer, Westphalia, MI Age 75, loving brother, uncle, and great uncle, passed away on Friday, October 10, 2003. He was born on August 20, 1928 in Westphalia the son of Adam and Pauline (Martin) Schafer. Mr. Schafer was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Catholic Order of Forresters, and served on the Westphalia Township Fire Department. Steve co-owned and operated Schafer's Restaurant with his brother Donald Schafer for 35 years, and also was a dispatcher for Tri-County Electrical Cooperative. Mr. Schafer was a Veteran and a member of the St. Johns American Legion Post #153. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and competing and watching sports. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Surviving are his brother, Donald (Geraldine) Schafer of Westphalia; sisters, Marie (Robert) Pohl of Westphalia and Sister DePaul Gladys Schafer of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; 7 nieces and 8 nephews; 53 great-nieces and nephews.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Cecilio Reyna, Pastor at 11 AM, Monday October 23, 2003 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Westphalia with Rite of Committal following at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the St. Mary's Funeral Chapel, 210 N. Westphalia Street, Westphalia from 7-9 PM Saturday and 2-4 and 7-9 PM Sunday. The Rosaries will be prayed at 8 PM Saturday and 3 and 8 PM Sunday. Arrangements are entrusted to the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, Portland.

Helen Ross

Helen Ross, age 86 of Bannister passed away Thursday, October 9, 2003. Helen was born on April 5, 1917 in Bannister, Michigan, the daughter of Joseph and Helen (Stastna) Stehlik. She married James (Fred) Ross of Mentone, Indiana on September 5, 1939 in Angola, Indiana. She was a homemaker and assisted her husband in their business, The Ross Grocery, The Ross Variety Store, and later Ross Bookkeeping Service. She was a 50 year member of the Bannister ZCBJ Lodge #225 in Bannister, Michigan, and a member of the Bannister United Methodist Women. She was predeceased by her husband James (Fred) Ross on July 12, 1997.

Surviving are her children; Gerald (Kathi) Ross of Orlando, FL, Charlotte A. (Charles) Tabor of Carson City, MI, and Fredrick Ross of Grand Rapids, MI, 9 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren, 1 sister, Ellie Micka of Elsie, MI, and several nieces & nephews. She was also preceded in death by her parents, 3 brothers, Joe, Frank, and Jimmy, and 4 sisters, Anna Velat, Bessie Supol, Mary Hecka, and Mildred Linman. Memorials may be made to Charity of donor’s choice.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 13, 2003 at 1:00 P.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel. Pastor Diane Gordon will officiate with burial at Ford Cemetery, Gratiot County, Michigan. Visitation will be Sunday from 2-8 P.M. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel.

William Nicholas Seeley

William Nicholas Seeley, infant son of William and Nicole (Thomas) Seeley died October 6, 2003. 

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his sisters, Courtney, Ashley and Brianna Seeley, grandparents, Leroy Thomas of St. Johns, Brenda Thomas of DeWitt and James and Kathy Toney of Gibsonburg, Ohio, great grandparents, Clifford and Carol Clark of Bannister, twelve aunts and uncles. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Robert Raymond Seeley. 

Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Saturday, October 11, 2003 at the Church of the Living Word, Ovid, burial at Union Home Cemetery with Pastor Audie Clairmont and Pastor Kirk Brookins officiating. The family will receive friends from 1-2 P.M. at the church. Memorials may be made to the family.

Doris J. Eiseler

Doris J. Eiseler died Thursday, October 9, 2003 at the age of 81.  She was born in St. Johns, Michigan April 4, 1922 the daughter of Earl and Florence (Huggett) Spayde and lived in St. Johns most of her life.  She was a   homemaker and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and Ladies Altar Society.   Her marriage of 49 years to Rodney Eiseler on February 22, 1946 ended with his death August 20, 1995.  

Doris is survived by one daughter, Diane Eiseler of St. Johns, two sons, Gary (Susan) Eiseler of Harrison and William (Marjorie) Eiseler of  St. Johns, eight grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, her twin sister, Dorothy Hall of St. Johns.    

Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:00 A.M. Saturday, October 11, 2003  at St. Joseph Catholic Church, burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery with Rev. Fr. Eoin Murphy   officiating.  The family will receive friends 7:00-9:00  Thursday and 3:00-4:00 & 7:00-9:00 on Friday at the Osgood Funeral Home with a Vigil Service being prayed 8:00 P.M.  Memorials may be made to Hospice for Clinton County.

Robert G. Ordway Sr.

Robert G. Ordway Sr. age 62 of Louisville, Kentucky, formerly of Ashley passed away Tuesday, October 7, 2003 at Norton Audubon Hospital in Louisville.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 11, 2003 at 1:00 P.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel. Pastor Alan Kozlowk will officiate with burial at Marion Springs Cemetery, Marion Springs, Michigan. Visitation will be Friday from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M.

Robert was born in Saginaw, Michigan on January 7, 1941, the son of Daniel Jasper and Olive (Gray) Ordway. He graduated from Elsie High School with the class of 1961. He also served in the US Army.

He is survived by 4 children, Patricia & Shad parks of Elwell, MI, Robert Ordway Jr. of Jackson, MI, Randy & Tracie Ordway of Shelbyville, KY, and Roger Ordway of Louisville, KY, 13 grandchildren, 2 sisters, Alice Miller of Ovid, MI, Bessie & Donald Crowell of Rome, NY, and 1 brother, George & Bonnie Ordway of Smithfield, NC. He was predeceased by his parents, 1 brother, and 1 sister.
