Frank Frankie L. Plaza Frank Frankie L. Plaza died October 21, 2003 at the age of 79. Born May 14, 1924 in Ithaca, MI, the son of Polish immigrants, Joseph and Mary (Fikes) Plaza. Frank retired from Federal Mogul and was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. He belonged to the Ushers Club, taught 4-H Gun Safety and was involved with the co-ed softball program. He married Doris Dunn on November 16, 1946 and she survives him. Also surviving are children, Carolyn (Tom) Hoover of St. Johns, Michael (Deborah) Plaza of Lapeer, Patricia (Carl) Gewirtz of Owosso, Delores (Neil) Bednarz of Canton, seven grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and brother, Joseph (Esther) Plaza of Zephyrhills, FL. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Stanley Plaza. Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:00 A.M. Friday, October 24, 2003 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, burial at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens with Rev. Fr. Eoin Murphy officiating. The family will receive friends 6-8 P.M. Wednesday and 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Thursday at the Osgood Funeral Home with a vigil service at 7:30 P.M. Thursday. Memorials may be made to St. Joseph School Scholarship Fund or to Ovid Healthcare Activities Department. Mildred Rose Dush age 74 of Eureka, Michigan died Saturday, October 18, 2003 at the Laurels of Fulton in Perrinton, Michigan. She was a homemaker and loving wife and mother. Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel. Sandra Ann Gehringer, age 58 of Ovid, Michigan, died on Friday, October 17, 2003. She was self-employed and took care of the elderly doing homecare and housework. Funeral services will be held Monday, October 20, 2003 at 11:00 A.M. at The Church of the Living Word in Ovid, Michigan. Rev. Audie Clairmont with burial at Maple Grove Cemetery, Ovid, Michigan. Visitation will be Monday from 9 A.M. until noon at the church. Sandra was born on June 27, 1945 in Lansing, Michigan, the daughter of Stanley & Thelma (Davis) Bloomfield. She graduated from Ovid-Elsie High School. On July 14, 1970 she married Mike Gehringer in Ovid, Michigan. She was a member of The Church of the Living Word in Ovid, Michigan. She resided most of her life in the Ovid area. She is survived by her husband Mike Gehringer of Ovid, MI, 1 Daughter, Laurie & Dale Hrymecki, 1 Son Stanley Bloomfield and Girlfriend Renee Humbert, 4 grandchildren, 3 brothers, Dale & MaryAnn Bloomfield, Henry & Joan Bloomfield, Roger & Kate Bloomfield. She was predeceased by her parents, and 1 son, Terry Pouch. Memorials may be made to The Church of the Living Word Parking Lot Fund. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel. Myron L. "Mike" Humphrey, 77, of Elk Rapids, died Oct. 15, 2003, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. He was born Jan. 27, 1926 in Alma, the son of Leonard and Olive (Flowers) Humphrey. At 17, immediately after high school graduation, Mike enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served aboard the carrier USS Franklin in the Pacific Theatre. Mike survived a massive attack by the Japanese, earning him the Purple Heart medal, and has kept in close contact with his Navy friends through yearly reunions. After World War II, Mike attended Alma College, graduating in 1951. In 1947, Mike married Wanda Upham. They spent most of their married life in Maple Rapids and St. Johns. Mike taught physical education and social studies for 30 years. He coached football and basketball for many years, but his first love was coaching golf. Mike coached high school golf for 27 years in St. Johns and Elk Rapids. He was voted Coach of the Year for Michigan and also inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in recognition of his successful career. Mike is survived by his wife, Wanda; three children, Sue (Larry) Flowers of Elk Rapids, Randy (Melanie) Humphrey of Estes Park, Colo., and Todd Humphrey of Elk Rapids. Mike was also blessed with five grandchildren, Kerry Humphrey of Ft. Collins, Colo., Sarah (David) Marshall of Tulsa, Okla., Emily (Adam) Titlebaum of Ft. Collins, Colo., Brett (Molly) Flowers of Madison Heights and Amanda Flowers of Elk Rapids. He also enjoyed his five great-grandchildren, Madeline, Jonathan and Benjamin Titlebaum, and Lauren and Anna Grace Marshall. Also surviving is his sister, Mavis Ardner, of Alma. A memorial service will be held Oct. 18 at the First Presbyterian Church in Elk Rapids with the family gathering to meet friends one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Dan Herlein will officiate. Arrangements were by the Elk Rapids Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. Gertrude B. Eick died Monday, October 13, 2003 at the age of 96. She was born in St. Johns, Michigan on April 28, 1907 the daughter of Archie and Ethel (McCabe) Bishop. She was a 1924 graduate of St. Johns High School and earned her Bachelor of Science Degree from CMU in 1943. Mrs. Eick was a teacher for 44 years with 15 years in Jackson and 29 years in St. Johns. She was a member of the First Congregational Church, Vesper Division of Women's Fellowship, Life Member of Order of Eastern Star, Life Member of Michigan Association of Retired Teachers, Clinton County Historical Society, Daughters of the American Revolution. Gertrude married Raymond Eick on December 17, 1937. She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Raymond Eick of St. Johns, daughter, Marilyn (Jeff) Gearhart of St. Johns, two grandchildren, Tracie (Brian) Pack of Fowlerville and Amy Gearhart of Grand Rapids and one great grandson, Jaedon Gearhart. Memorial Services will be 11:00 A.M. Friday, October 17, 2003 at the First Congregational Church with Rev. Matt Olson officiating. There will be no visitation. Florence L. Stevens, 85, passed away Oct. 13, 2003 in Ann Arbor. She was formerly of Westphalia. She was born Nov. 7, 1917, the daughter of James and Catherine (Thelen) Stevens. She was a retired librarian from Eastern Michigan University. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Mary Frances (Stevens) Loy, and brother-in-law, Ralph Loy. The funeral Mass will be held at 1 p.m., Oct. 20, at St. Marys Catholic Church, Westphalia, with Fr. Cecilio Reyna officiating. Burial will be at St. Marys Cemetery.
