Lillian C. Conger

conger.jpg (9190 bytes)Lillian C. Conger age 82 of Ovid, Michigan died Saturday, November 15, 2003 at the Ovid Healthcare Center, Ovid, Michigan. She was a homemaker.
Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, November 19, 2003 at 2:00 P.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie, Michigan. Rev. Fr. George Michalek will officiate with burial at North Star Cemetery in North Star, Michigan. Visitation will be Monday from 6-8 P.M. and Tuesday 9 A.M.-8 P.M. with family present from 2-4 & 6-8 P.M.

Lillian was born on May 3, 1921 in Gratiot County, Michigan the daughter of Gerald & Edith (Harrington ) Powelson. She was married to Glenn Conger in Owosso, Michigan. She had resided most of her life in Owosso & Ovid. She enjoyed cooking, canning, quilting & doll making. She was an expert seamstress.

Survivors include her husband; Glenn Conger of Ovid, Michigan, 1 daughter; Hazel & Dick Grinnell of Ovid, Michigan, 3 sons; Roger & Bobbie Ackels of Houston, Texas, Rodrick Ackels of Owosso, Michigan & Roneil & Jorja Ackels of Owosso, Michigan; 19 Grandchildren, 35 Great Grandchildren & 11 Great Great Grandchildren. She is also survived by 2 brothers; Bill & Martha Powelson of Ashley, Michigan & George Powelson also of Ashley, Michigan; 1 Daughter in law, Betty Ackels of Ovid, Michigan & 1 Brother in law, Ivan & Dorothy Conger of Owosso, Michigan.
She was predeceased by her parents, son Richard, 1 great granddaughter, 1 sister Lula, & 3 brothers Gerald, Norman, & Orlin.

Memorials may be made to the Ovid Ambulance Service or to the Ovid Healthcare Center. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel.

Florence G. Horn

Florence G. Horn died Thursday, November 13, 2003 at the age of 86. She was born July 25, 1917 in St. Louis, Missouri and lived most of her life in Owosso and Elsie prior to moving to St. Johns in 1993. Florence is a member of the First United Methodist Church, former board member of the Clinton County Arts Council as well as an artist, and was a Registered Nurse at Owosso Memorial Hospital and Shiawassee County Health Department-Medicaid Clinic before retiring. Florence married Glenn Horn on December 10, 1944 and he preceded her in death. 

She is survived by two sons, James (Betty) Horn of St. Johns & Bruce (Susanne) Horn of Dimondale, two granddaughters, Katherine Ann & Melinda Jo, two great grandsons, one stepbrother, Walter Alan (Evelyn) Zimmerman of Florida, one stepsister, Mary Katherine (Victor) Teichman of Durand and one sister-in-law, Joyce Zimmerman of Owosso. She was preceded in death by her husband, mother and stepfather, Katherine and James Zimmerman and stepbrother, James Zimmerman.  Florence’s wishes were to be cremated.   

Memorial Services will be 1:00 P.M. Wednesay, November 19, 2003 at the First United Methodist Church in St. Johns with the Rev. Margery Schleicher officiating.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.  Memorials may be made to the Clinton County Arts Council.  Arrangements by Osgood Funeral Home.

Norma Evans Haas

Norma Evans Haas, a long-time resident of St. Johns and wife of the late Frank Earl Haas, Jr., died November 14, 2003, in Annapolis, Maryland, after a struggle with complications following surgery. She was born April 7, 1915, in Manistee, MI, shortly after her American father and English mother moved to the United States from Canada. Her sister, Doris Buckley of Troy, MI, and five sons, Terry of Southborough, MA, Richard of Boerne, TX, Brian of Annapolis, MD, Bruce of Fredericksburg, VA, and Douglas of Corvallis, MT, survive her. She also leaves 13 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. 

She assumed the responsibility of raising two oldest sons alone during World War II while her husband served as an Army infantry officer in the Pacific theater. Following the war, the family lived in small towns in rural Michigan. She was a lifelong member of the Episcopal church, and the family was active in the establishment of a mission church in Pentwater, MI, the predecessor of the present St. James Episcopal Church in that town. After raising her sons to school age, she returned to school herself, eventually earning both a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in Education and becoming an English teacher and tutor in the St. Johns school system. An accomplished pianist and organist she served many years as the volunteer organist in St. John’s Episcopal Church, St. Johns and during summer months in St. Paul’s Church in Gladwin, MI, where the family had a cottage. Upon her retirement, she continued active volunteer work in many activities associated with tutoring and education, with aiding seniors, within the Episcopal Church. The high point of her volunteer work was service in the Peace Corps in Liberia, as an English teacher. 

Funeral services will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday, November 18, 2003, burial at the Mt. Rest Cemetery, St. Johns, MI with the Rev. Richard R. Anderson and the Rev. Wayne H. Larson officiating. The family will receive friends 10-11:00 A.M. Tuesday at the church. Arrangements by the Osgood Funeral Home.

Rolla Marshal Salter

salter.jpg (7662 bytes)Rolla Marshal Salter, age 82 of Six Lakes, Michigan passed away Thursday, November 13, 2003 at his home. He worked for Sealed Power Corporation in St. Johns, Michigan retiring in 1997.

Funeral services will be held Monday, November 17, 2003 at 11:00 A.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Johns Chapel with Pastor Lee Whitman officiating. Visitation will be Sunday from 2-4 P.M. and Monday 9:00 A.M. until the time of the service.

Rolla was born on February 7, 1921 in Clinton County, Michigan, the son of Marshal Floyd and Lydia Adele (Moon) Salter. He graduated from St. Johns High School with the class of 1941. On December 24, 1945 he married Dorothy Mae Pratt in St. Johns, Michigan. He served in the US Army during WWII and was a lifetime member of the St. Johns VFW Post #4113. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards and feeding birds. He was also a good cook and baker. He resided most of his life in Clinton County, moving to Six Lakes in 1977.

He is survived by his wife Dorothy Salter of Six Lakes, MI, 3 daughters, Dianna Salter & Earl of St. Johns, MI, Kathleen Salter & Tony of Chapin, MI, Debbie & Jeff Barrett of St. Johns, MI, 4 grandchildren, Tina & Kurt Ziegler of St. Johns, MI, Teresa & Brian Teelander of St. Johns, MI, Lynsey & Jeff Smith of St. Johns, MI, and Bernard Barrett & Amy of St. Johns, MI, 5 great-grandchildren, Jessi, Brandi, Brian II, Marshal, and Cole, 1 sister, Reva & Jerry Vestal of St. Johns, MI. He was predeceased by his parents, 3 brothers, Robert, Roy, and Dennis, and 1 sister, Viola.

Memorials may be made to the St. Johns VFW Post #4113 or Gratiot County Hospice. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Johns Chapel.

Beverly A. Iszler

Beverly A. Iszler 73, of Osseo, formerly of St. Johns, passed away Wednesday November 12, 2003 at home. She was born on October 6, 1929 in Flint, Michigan to Arlo and Myrtle (Smalley) Purdy.

Beverly graduated from Sexton High School in Lansing and was employed at the Michigan Employment Security Commission until her retirement in 1985.

On July 29, 1951 she married Alvin E. Iszler and he survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Patricia A. Iszler of Hillsdale, Sandra Kay Iszler of Allen; one brother LaVere Purdy of Lansing; two granddaughters, Michelle McIntyre of Ypsilanti, Elizabeth McNair of Hillsdale; two great-grandchildren, Cameron and Emerald McIntyre.

Beverly was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Donna Jean Couling, and a brother Robert Purdy.

Funeral services for Beverly will be Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at the VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale, with the Rev. Curtis Jensen officiating. Interment will follow at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Jefferson Township. The family will receive friends Friday from 6:30-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Doris I. Secord

Secord-Doris.jpg (7078 bytes)Doris I. Secord died November 11, 2003, at the age of 78. She was born in Ashley on June 30, 1925, the daughter of Floyd and Lucille (Strouse) Spiece. She was a member of Eureka Christian Church, was active with the Clinton County Senior Center, enjoyed embroidery, bingo and spending time with family and friends. Doris married Robert Secord and he preceded her in death. 

Surviving are her children, Floyd (Linda) Secord, Jr. of Lansing, Wava Rathbun, Bob L. (Joan) Secord, all of St. Johns, Larry L. Secord of Ovid and Kathy (Mark) Barrett of St. Johns, fifteen grandchildren and twenty-two great grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Dell R. Secord, three brothers and one sister. 

Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Friday, November 14, 2003 at the Osgood Funeral Home, burial at South Bingham Cemetery with Pastor Bob Ditmer officiating. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-9 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Clinton County Senior Center or Eureka Christian Church.

Lula Irene Church

Lula Irene Church,  Eugene, Oregon Lula Irene Church, 93, of Eugene, Oregon, passed away Sunday, November 9, 2003 at her home. Lula was born April 29, 1910 in Gratiot County to Melvin and Elsie (Carmon) Anderson (one of 15 children). She married Clayton C. Church of Lansing on October 27, 1929 in Mason, MI. They moved to DeWitt in 1932 where they owned and operated Church Auto Body. During WWII they converted their shop to the war effort and painted the inside of bombs. They sold out in 1953 and lived in Florida, St. Louis, MI and Arizona before moving back to DeWitt, where she was employed by J.W. Knapp Co. working in daytime dresses. Lula was a very loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. She loved playing board games and cards with family and friends, loved to travel, and will be remembered by friends and family as fun loving and a wonderful cook. She lived her later years in Lansing, and Hillsborough, CA with her daughters family and finally Eugene, OR with her loving granddaughter, Karen. In these years she traveled to Europe, Asia and Hawaii. She was a big sports fan, watching every baseball, basketball and football game she could on TV.

She is survived by her son, Jerry (Sally) Church of St. Louis, MI; daughter, Judy Swanson of Hillsborough, CA; daughter-in-law, Evalle Church of DeWitt; grandchildren, Steve (Jane) Church and Mike (Tammie) Church of DeWitt, Karen Church of Eugene, OR, Debbie (Rick) Mailand of High Point, NC, Jerry (Becky) Church of Bothell, WA, Cindy Church of California, Katie Swanson of Princeton, NJ and Erica Swanson of Hillsborough, CA; great-grandchildren, Melissa Mailand of Houston, TX, Emily (Chris) Bourne of Lansing, Brittany, Stevie, Amanda, Michelle and Brooke Church of DeWitt, Danielle Theil of California, Jillian Theil of California, Brandi, Kelly and Matthew Church of Bothell, WA. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clayton on November 2, 1969, son, Clayton B., son-in-law, Robert Swanson, grandchildren, Cheryl Lynn Church, Clayton A. Church, Sharon Church, 8 brothers and 6 sisters.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday, November 15, at Noon at the Gorsline-Runciman Co. DeWitt Chapel, 111 S. Franklin, DeWitt. Interment will follow in DeWitt Cemetery, DeWitt, MI. The family will receive friends at the Chapel Friday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM.
