Shawn Patrick Curtis

Shawn Patrick Curtis,  Laingsburg, MI Age 45, passed away Monday, December 1, 2003 at Sparrow Hospital. Born October 5, 1958 in Lansing, MI to Durwin and Dolores (Copelin) Curtis. He graduated from St. Johns High School, Class of 1977. He was a member of Laingsburg American Legion. He was the owner/operator of Curtis Plastering.

Survivors include his children, daughter, Melissa Curtis of St. Johns; stepson, Jon Wylie and fiance' Denise Dietrich of St. Johns; parents, Durwin and Dolores Curtis of Laingsburg; former wife, Linda Curtis; sister, Liz (David) Klienhardt of Laingsburg; brothers, Richard (Sue) Curtis of Laingsburg and Todd (Laura) Curtis of St. Johns; and nieces and nephews. Predeceased by sister-in-law, Joy Curtis.

Funeral Services will be held at St. Isidore Catholic Church, Laingsburg, Thursday at 11 AM, with Rev. Father Duaine H. Pamment officiating. Burial in Reed Cemetery. Visitation at Tuesday, from 7-9 PM and Wednesday 2-4 and 7-9 PM at the Watkins Brothers Funeral Home, Laingsburg. Memorials suggested to Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

Kirk Winfield Spry

Kirk Winfield Spry,  DeWitt, MI Age 81, died December 1, 2003. Born October 24, 1922 in Detroit, MI. Mr. Spry was a decorated Veteran of WWII. He was a member of the Catholic Community of St. Jude, DeWitt, East Lansing Kiwanis, 4th Degree Knights of Columbus #788, DeWitt Knights of Columbus. He volunteered at the Capital Area Humane Society, American Cancer Society, and Mobile Meal's; manager of St. Jude's Softball Team, appeared as Santa Claus for many charitable organizations and was a drummer in big bands for 25 years. He was preceded in death by his 1st wife, Belle Marie Spry, parents, Anita (Monington) and Winfield Spry, grandson, Keller Winfield Spry-Scanlan and brother, Dwight Spry.

Surviving are his wife, Bernadine "Bernie" Spry; children, R. James Spry of Haslett, Susan Jean (Richard A.) Olson of Howard City and Tami Lynn Spry (Bernard J. Scanlan) of Milaca, MN; step-daughter, Michelle (Garret) Peaslee of Kalamazoo; step-son, Michael Sauve' of Stockbridge; grandchildren, Zebadiah D. Spry-Scanlan, Kyle K. (Kirsta), and Benjamin (Allison) Royston, Zack A. and Spencer Spry; step-grandchildren, Kyle, Devin and Kade Sauve', Laura (Eric) Geresy and Matthew and Trevor Peaslee; 1 great-granddaughter, Ella Moon Royston; 1 step-great-grandson, Kylin Geresy.

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday, December 4, 11 AM at the Catholic Community of St. Jude, 801 N. Bridge Street, DeWitt, with the Rev. Dwight Ezop, Pastor, officiating. The Rite of Committal will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Lansing. The family will receive friends at the Gorsline-Runciman Co. DeWitt Chapel, 111 S. Franklin, DeWitt Wednesday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM with special services provided by the Knights of Columbus at 7 PM. Stanley R. Pewoski

Pewoski died Friday, November 28, 2003 at the age of 57.  He was born in Lansing, Michigan on March 29, 1946, the son of Stanley and Helen (Suchek) Pewoski.  He was a graduate of Rodney B. Wilson High School in St. Johns and MSU in East Lansing.  In his younger days, Stan lived and worked on his father's farm.  His first employment was at The Aderson's in Maumee, Ohio.  Stan returned to St. Johns and hired in to Oldsmobile Plant 2 now known as the Lansing Craft Centre where he started his union career as a Union Officer for Local 1618 UAW.  He was on the Shop Committee, as well as four-time elected Chairperson of the Shop Committee and later received a special assignment from the UAW International Union.  Stan's belief was "People are GM's greatest assets" and his union strength came from the membership.  He has lived at his Dimondale residence since 1975. 

He married Karon R. Colbath on May 25, 1973 and they renewed their wedding vows on October 21, 2003 in the chapel at U of M Hospital with Rev. Fr. Tom McDevitt.  They raised Jon and Cindy from Stan's previous marriage, as well as their daughter, Kristen R. Pewoski.  Stan was preceded in death by his father, Stanley J. Pewoski who drowned in 1966, his son, Matthew S. Pewoski who died May 24, 1971, his much loved brother, Larry L. Pewoski who died in 2000 and special uncle, Henry "Hank" Pewoski who died in 2002. 

Stan is survived by his wife of 30 years, Karon Pewoski of Dimondale, son, Jon (Michelle) Pewoski of Hastings, two daughters, Cindy Pewoski of Drummond Island and Kristen Pewoski of Dimondale, two proud grandsons, Michael and Nathan Pewoski, his mother, Helen (Earl) Michaud of Dimondale, Aunt Cecila and Uncle Henry Skopek of Zephyrhills, Florida, Aunt Mary Pewoski of Grayling, plus many loved family members and friends.   Stan's wishes were to be cremated. 

Memorial Services will be 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, December 3, 2003 at Osgood Funeral Home in St. Johns with the Rev. Fr. Tom McDevitt and UAW Chaplain Jim Gleason officiating.  Family and friends can get together to share fun times from 5:00 - 8:00 on Tuesday at the funeral home.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be given to the Leukemia Foundation or Ingham Hospice Services.

Edith A. (Hunter) Russell

Russell-Edith.jpg (6525 bytes)Edith A. (Hunter) Russell died November 28, 2003, at the age of 97. She was born in Alberta, Canada on July 24, 1906, the daughter of Edward and Ada (McCredie) Hunter. Edith was a member of the First United Methodist Church, St. Johns, Edith Russell Bible Study, taught Sunday school for 65 years, was a lifetime member of Clinton County Country Club and long-time member of Town Hall in Lansing. She loved international travel, gardening, visiting sick friends and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Edith married Dr. Sherwood Russell in Windsor, Ontario, Canada on July 10, 1934 and he preceded her in death on March 19, 1979. 

Surviving are her son, William (Janet) Russell of St. Johns, daughter, Maureen (Lyle) Canum of Holland, MI, granddaughter, Kathleen (Gilbert) Baker of Maple Rapids, grandsons, Stephen (Bonnie) Canum and Michael Canum, all of Grand Rapids, great granddaughters, Brittany Canum and Allison Canum, both of Grand Rapids and great grandson, Ian Baker of Maple Rapids. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Sherwood Ross Russell and grandson, Sherwood Dean Russell. 

Funeral services will be 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, December 2, 2003 at the First United Methodist Church, St. Johns, burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery with Rev. Margery Schleicher and Rev. E. Stewart Hunter officiating. The family will receive friends 6-9 P.M. Sunday and 2-4 and 6-9 P.M. Monday at the Osgood Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, St. Johns, or Ovid Healthcare Center.

Sgt. Derrick P. Schroeder

Sgt. Derrick P. Schroeder,  27, Ovid, MI Born June 10, 1976, in Lansing; died November 26, 2003, at the age of 27. Derrick was a 1995 graduate of Ovid-Elsie High School. He served as a Communications Expert for the 51st Weapons of Mass Destruction of the Civil Support Team for the Michigan National Guard at Ft. Custer in Augusta, MI.

Surviving are Cherri L. (Lane), his wife of 5 years; sons, Davon A., Skilar P. and Gabriel L. Schroeder; his father, Timothy Schroeder of Lansing; his mother, Lois Schroeder of Ovid; sister, Brooke (Josh) Allen of Detroit; and his grandfather, Jack Schroeder of Newaygo.

Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, December 2, at 11 a.m. at the First Assembly of God Church, 2717 West Rd., East Lansing, with the Rev. Curt W. Dalaba Sr., Pastor, officiating. Graveside Services will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, Lansing, with Full Military Honors being provided by the 110th Fighter Wing Group of the Michigan Air National Guard of Battle Creek. The family will receive friends at the Gorsline-Runciman Co. Lansing Chapel, 900 E. Michigan Ave., Lansing, on Monday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to his children's college fund, c/o Auto Body Credit Union, 111 S. Waverly Rd., Lansing, MI 48917.

 

DeWayne "Pete" Gearhart

DeWayne "Pete" Gearhart,  80, of Grant, Fla., formerly of St. Johns, Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, former firefighter and hot dog stand operator, died Sunday November 23, 2003. Visitation has been held. Arrangements by Seawinds Funeral Home and Crematory, Sebastian, Fla.

Marcella D. Doubrava

doubrava.jpg (7118 bytes)Marcella D. Doubrava, loving wife, mother & grandmother died Thursday, November 27, 2003 at her home with her family by her side. She was 79 years old.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, December 1, 2003 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Cyril’s Catholic Church in Bannister, Michigan. Rev. Fr. Wolfgang Streichardt and Mr. Thomas Bradley will officiate. Visitation will be Saturday & Sunday from 2-8 P.M. with family present 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. Rosary will be prayed Sunday evening at 6:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Burial will take place at Riverside Cemetery, Elsie Michigan.

Marcella s born on January 9, 1924 in Chicago, Illinois the daughter of Joseph & Fraciska (Macak) Kralovec. She graduated from Farragut High School in Chicago, Illinois. On February 23, 1946 she married Rudy Doubrava in Chicago; they have been married 57 years. Marcella was an Avon Representative for the past 31 years in the area. She was a member of St. Cyril’s Catholic Church in Bannister, also the Altar Society, ZCBJ Lodge #225, V.F.W. Auxiliary in Owosso. She had resided in the Elsie area for 51 years.

Survivors include her husband, Rudy Doubrava of Elsie, 2 daughters, Barbara & Charles Robertson of Owosso, Susan & Gil Grass of St. Petersburg, FL, 2 sons, Richard & Debora Doubrava of Lansing, Thomas & Stacy Doubrava of Elsie, 4 grandsons, Chris & Curt Robertson and Kyle & Bryce Doubrava. She was predeceased by her parents, 1 sister, Mildred Mares and 1 brother, Jerome Kralovec.

Memorials can be made to Clinton County Hospice or a Charity of the Donors Choice. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel.

Lee Edward Schavey

Lee Edward Schavey,  52, of Indian River, formerly of St. Johns, federal meat inspector, died Monday November 24, 2003. Services 10:30 a.m. Friday at Lintz Funeral Home, Indian River.

Doris A. Bird

Bird-Doris.jpg (7671 bytes)Doris A. Bird died November 25, 2003 at the age of 90. She was born in Maple Rapids on March 2, 1913, the daughter of Ray Barries and Katherine Ann (Waldron) Smith. Doris lived all her life in Maple Rapids all but about eight years. She moved back to Maple Rapids in 1927 and finished the 10th , 11th  and 12th grades, graduating in June 1930. Doris grew up during the depression years and as well as being a homemaker she worked out of the home to help supplement the income. Doris married Carl Bird in Northport, Michigan in August 1930. To this union were born three boys. C.F. Bird lived only 10 days, Jerry Bird and Gary Bird. Doris loved to travel and while their boys were in the Navy, Doris and Carl got to visit many states in the U.S. In 1952 she hired in to Federal Mogul in St. Johns where she worked 20 years and retired in 1972. 

Surviving are her sons, Jerry (Janet) Bird and Gary (Billie) Bird, all of Maple Rapids, Kris Coffin, who grew up in their home as a son, seven grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, eight great great grandchildren, half sister, Sylvia Norton of Grand Rapids and a host of cousins, nephews and nieces. In addition to her husband of 62 years, she was preceded in death by her sister, Sybil Parkinson, brother, R.B. Smith, half sister, Donna Jean Braman Crum and half brother, John Braman. 

Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Saturday, November 29, 2003 at the Abbott Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes, Maple Rapids, burial at Sowle Cemetery with Pastor Steven Lang officiating. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Maple Rapids United Methodist Women.

Stephen Charles Jorae

Jorae-Stephen.jpg (8133 bytes)Stephen Charles Jorae died peacefully at home on November 25, 2003, with his wife and sister by his side after a long struggle with cancer. He was born in Lansing on June 24, 1948, the son of Donald V. and Laura E. (Davis) Jorae. Stephen attended St. Johns Public Schools graduating from Rodney B. Wilson High School in 1966, served in the United States Marine Corp Reserves from 1968-1974, and was a farmer, heavy equipment operator, bartender and welder. He attended St. Isidore Catholic Church in Laingsburg, was a member of the American Legion Post 153 in St. Johns and the Looking Glass River Sportsman’s Club. He loved his family (especially the little children)-took great pride in being “Uncle Steve”, enjoyed hunting and fishing (including a hunting trip this month), playing cribbage and watching Westerns on TV. Stephen married Marcyanna Crowe in St. Johns on August 23, 1980. 

He is survived by hius wife of 23 years, Marcy Jorae of Laingsburg, his sisters, Janet (Jim) Betts of Elsie and Camilla (John) Vitek of St. Johns, brother, Jerry (Mary) Jorae of Fowler, sisters-in-law, Peg (Lou) Laslo of Maumee, OH and Lucy (Mike) Tate of Grayling, brother-in-law, Robb (Jan) Crowe of Lawrenceville, GA, former sister-in-law, Stella Thelen of Saginaw and many nieces and nephews. He was especially close to his nieces, Brenda Betts of East Lansing; Michele (Scott) Oszust and their children, Hailee Jorae and Noah of Chesaning; Michelle Dureiko and her children, Amanda, Adam, Andrew and Austin (whom he affectionately nicknamed “Uncle Steve’s A-Team”) of Euclid, OH; and nephew, Marty (Kris) Laslo and their son, Evan, of Maumee, OH. He was preceded in death by his parents, Don and Laura Jorae, father-in-law and mother-in-law, Robert and Agnes Crowe of Adrian, MI. 

Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:00 A.M. Saturday, November 29, 2003 at St. Isidore Catholic Church, 310 N. Crum, Laingsburg, burial at Reed Cemetery with Rev. Fr. Duaine Pamment officiating. The family will receive friends 9 A.M. - 8 P.M. Friday at the Osgood Funeral Home, 104 E. Cass St., St. Johns, with family present 2-8 P.M. and the rosary prayed at 8 P.M. Military graveside services provided by St. Johns Honor Guard. The family would like to thank the wonderful caregivers of the Clinton Home Team of Sparrow Hospice Services, especially Pam Neumann, Michelle Wiseman, Sue Bunge, Mary Farley and Barb Henning.
