Eugene A. “Scotty” Scott 

scott.jpg (9225 bytes)Eugene A. “Scotty” Scott died December 15, 2003, at the age of 75. He was born in Victor Township, MI on October 5, 1928, the son of Raymond and Loereta (Giffels) Scott. He was self-employed with his own drywall and plastering business, the quality of his work was his best advertising, and was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in the Korean War. He was a very quiet man who loved working with wood and building roll top desks; enjoyed the U.P., especially his place in Paradise, MI; loved his garden, fishing (taking along pop, beer and pickled bologna to help pass the time when the fish weren’t biting), and his family and spending time with them, and used to square dance with his wife. Eugene married Alice Smith in St. Johns on January 20, 1951. 

Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Alice Scott, two daughters, Diann Bennett and Della (Richard) Wirt, seven grandchildren, Jason (Heather) Bennett, Justin Bennett, Michelle Wirt, Elizabeth Wirt, Donna Bennett, Kristen Bennett and Zachary Bennett, two great grandchildren, Paige Bennett and Ethan Bennett and four brothers, Oliver (Phyllis) Scott, Ronald Scott, Harry (Doris) Scott and Charles (Mary) Scott. He was preceded in death by his parents, son, Edward and four brothers, Elbridge, Robert, Arthur and Roy Scott. 

Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Thursday, December 18, 2003 at the Osgood Funeral Home, St. Johns, burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery with the Rev. Fr. Dwight Ezop officiating. The family will receive friends 3-5 and 7-9 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home. Military graveside services provided by St. Johns Honor Guard.

Ila M. Shepard

shepard.jpg (8415 bytes)Ila M. Shepard, St. Johns, MI Age 88, passed away Saturday, December 14, 2003 at Ovid Healthcare Center, Ovid, MI. Born April 11, 1915 in Lansing, MI to Ralph Milton and Violet (Wygant) Folds. She graduated from Eastern High School in Lansing with the class of 1933. She married Gerald E. Shepard in Lansing, MI on September 17, 1933. Gerald died November 24, 2002. Ila was a homemaker and a member of the Bath United Methodist Church. She resided most of her life in Bath, MI area.

Survivors include 2 daughters, Linda Cogswell of Lansing, MI and Mary (Warren) Faloon of St. Johns, MI; 2 sons, James (Judy) Shepard of Lansing, MI and Russell (Marja Lee) Shepard of Grayling, MI; 10 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents, daughter-in-law, Nancy Shepard and son-in-law, Daniel Cogswell.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday, December 20, 2003 at 2 PM at Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Johns Chapel, with Rev. Thomas Truby of the Bath United Methodist Church officiating. Burial in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Bath, MI. Visitation Friday, 2-8 PM with family present 2-4 and 6-8 PM. Memorials suggested to Bath United Methodist Church, Bath, MI. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Johns Chapel.

Leonard W. Campbell, Sr.

Campbell, Sr. died Monday, December 15, 2003 at the age of 97.  He was born August 5, 1906 in Antrim County, Michigan the son of William and Alice (Leonard) Campbell.  He married Bessie Smith on February 3, 1928 and she preceded him in death on May 6, 1988 after 60 years of marriage.  Leonard was a member of the First Congregational Church of St. Johns and retired from the Clinton Co. Road Commission. 

He is survived by daughter, Janice Francis of Arizona, two sons, Leonard (Ruth) Campbell Jr. of Perry and Roger (Carol) Campbell of Dewitt, son-in-law, Anthony Schwartzfisher of Dewitt, twelve grandchildren and twenty great grandchildren.  In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by daughter, Betty Schwartzfisher and five sisters, Jessie Foster, Margaret Cosby, Marian Gregorson, Helen Swen and Florence Campbell.

Funeral Services will be 1:30 P.M. Thursday, December 18, 2003 at Osgood Funeral Home, St. Johns burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery with Rev. Cayle Beagle officiating.   The family will receive friends 7-9 Tuesday and 3-5 and 7-9 Wednesday at the funeral home.  Memorials may be made to Clinton Memorial Hospital.

Samuel J. Van Etten

vanetten.jpg (8135 bytes)Samuel Van Etten died December 14, 2003, at the age of 80. He was born in Gratiot County on September 2, 1923, the son of Samuel and Rosetta (Hawkins) Van Etten. He was the owner of Sam Van Etten Masonry & Cement Contractor, Inc., was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, an avid outdoorsman and a member of the V.F.W., AM-VETS and the Michigan Trappers Association. 

Surviving is the mother of his children and special friend, Mary Ellen Reese of Ludington, his daughters, Jane Marek, Joy (John) Jelinek, all of St. Johns and Jo (Steve) Wheeler of Jenison, sons, Tom (Sandy) Van Etten of Bannister and Dan (Elaine) Van Etten of Fowler, seventeen grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren, brothers, Dick (Lynne) Van Etten of California and Paul Van Etten of New York and step brother, Bill (Betty) Mol of Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents, infant son, Samuel Van Etten, two brothers, John Van Etten and Gene Van Etten, sister, Marianne Van Etten and half brother, Harold Brown. 

Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, December 17, 2003 at the Osgood Funeral Home, burial at Eureka Cemetery with Rev. Cayle Beagle officiating. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Tuesday at the funeral home.

William H.  Butler

William H.  Butler, 74, died Sunday. Memorial services will be held at a later date. Arrangements by Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Johns.

Floyd "Ken," Thayer

thayer.jpg (6613 bytes)Floyd Thayer age 77 of St. Johns, Michigan passed away Sunday, December 14, 2003 at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, Michigan. He was a farmer and enjoyed his animals.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, December 18, 2003 at 11:00 A.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Johns Chapel. Rev. Tim Cockcroft will officiate with burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery, St. Johns, Michigan. Visitation will be Wednesday from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M.

Floyd was born on October 1, 1926 in Shepherd, Michigan, the son of Clarence and Ethel (Casler) Thayer. On August 20, 1978 he married Rebecca Ann Rathbun in DeWitt, Michigan. He resided most of his life in St. Johns and loved to hunt and play card games.

He is survived by his wife, Rebecca Ann Thayer of St. Johns, MI, 2 daughters, Linda (Sonny) Abbott of Missouri, and Cindy (Charles) Midkiff of Durand, MI, stepson, Michael Raby of DeWitt, MI, stepdaughter, Chris (Gregg) Updyke of Saranac, MI, 7 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild, sister, Joyce Harding of Haslett, MI, 2 brothers, Orland (Mary) Thayer of Harbor Springs, MI, and Randall (Carol) Thayer of Lake Placid, FL. He was predeceased by his parents.

Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association or St. Johns High School FFA. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Johns Chapel.

Edwina R. “Winnie” McDowell

mcdowell.jpg (8855 bytes)Edwina R. “Winnie” McDowell died December 10, 2003, at the age of 90. Born in West Branch, MI on January 21, 1913, she was the daughter of Edward and Josephine (Wangler) Reetz. She married Keith McDowell December 27, 1938, and moved to St. Johns in 1948 opening McDowell Drug Store with Keith. Edwina earned a teaching degree from Central Michigan University and taught elementary school for 15 years at St. Joseph Catholic School in St. Johns. She had an avid mind, enjoyed history, reading, keeping up on world events, and sewing and cooking for her family. She especially enjoyed visiting with her grandchildren in later years. She was a member of the St. Joseph Altar Society and the St. Johns Women’s Club, serving as secretary for several years.  

Edwina is survived by her son, Edward McDowell of Ovid, her brothers, Calvin (Joan) Reetz and Walter Reetz of West Branch, her sisters, Laura Walter of Harper Woods and Thelma Brick of Kalkaska, her daughter-in-law, Judy McDowell and her two granddaughters, Amy McDowell and Melanie McDowell of Arlington, VA. Edwina was preceded in death by her husband, Keith McDowell, her son, Douglas McDowell, her daughter, Mary McDowell, three brothers, Christopher, Dennis and Warren Reetz and two sisters, Margaret Zettel and Georgina Winter. 

A Memorial Mass will be 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, December 16, 2003 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, St. Johns, and Rev. Fr. Eoin Murphy officiating with a luncheon following at the Knights of Columbus Hall. The family will receive friends one hour before the service. The burial service will be held in West Branch. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St. Joseph’s School Scholarship Fund, c/o St. Joseph Catholic Church, 109 Linden, St. Johns, MI 48879.

Sister Antonio Spitzley, SSJ

Sister Antonio Spitzley, SSJ Fontbonne Manor, Nazareth, MI Died December 7, 2003. Sister was born May 22, 1911 in Westphalia, MI, the daughter of William and Mary (Thelen) Spitzley, and was a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph.

She is survived many nieces and nephews; grandnieces and grandnephews; and the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph.

Friends were received at St. Joseph Chapel on Wednesday. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, today 10:30 AM with final viewing at 10:15 AM. Interment Gate of Heaven Cemetery. David Dush

David M Dush Ph.D., 49, passed away Nov. 20, 2003 at his home under Hospice care. He was he born Dec. 27, 1953 in St. Johns. He married Billie (Hothem) Dush Jan. 2, 1982 in Canton Ohio.

He graduated form St. Johns High School and attended Michigan State University, the University of Manitoba and Kent State where he received his Ph.D. in psychology. He was a psychologist at Mid Michigan Medical Center, Midland and a professor at Central Michigan University.

Survivors include his wife Billie Dush; daughters Elayna Dush, Erin Dush of Sanford; father and step-mother George and Betty Dush of St. Johns. He was preceded in death by his mother, Hellen.

Funeral Services were held Nov. 24 in Midland. Burial at New Edenville Cemetery, Edenville.

Dale Carl Juenker

Dale Carl Juenker, 84, of Eagle passed away Nov. 28 in Lansing.

Dale was a retired employee of General Motors and lifetime farmer. He was a member of North Eagle Cemetery Society and a member of St. Michael Catholic Church, Grand Ledge.

He was predeceased by his parents John and Ella (Witt) Juenker; sister, Bernice (Norman) Schafer; brother, Norman (Hazel) Juenker.

Surviving are his daughters, Diane (Michael) Fish of Portland, Judith (Michael) McCollor of Eagle; grandchildren, Stephanie Trierweiler of Kentucky, Elizabeth Trierweiler of Portland, Todd Trierweiler of Florida, Wade (Patti) Fish of Portland, Laura (Michael) Hager of Portland, Ann McCollor of St. Johns; great-grandchildren, Thomas Rinehart, Ella, Savanna and Griffin Hager; brother, Gerald (Virginia) Juenker of Alpena; many nieces and nephews; and special friend, Velma May of Westphalia.

Services were held Dec. 1 at St. Michael Catholic Church, Grand Ledge with Fr. Robert McGraw officiating. Interment followed at North Eagle Cemetery. Arrangements were handled by the Peters & Murray Funeral Home, Grand Ledge.

Contributions may be made to the North Eagle Cemetery Society or the Rev. Dr. Anthony Csaky Memorial.
