Wayne Ackels

Ackels-Wayne.jpg (6923 bytes)Wayne Ackels died February 2, 2004, at the age of 74. He was born in Gratiot County on March 21, 1929, the son of Willard and Florence (Knapp) Ackels. He was a self-employed mechanic and was a member of the Jehovah’s Witnesses in St. Johns. Wayne married Connie Smith on October 24, 1953 and she survives him. 

Also surviving are his daughters, Roxanne (Bob) Baumgras and Melanie (Jim) Lyon, all of Ovid, grandchildren, Kristi (Mike) Morgan of Plainwell, MI, Ben (Jaime) Cox of St. Louis, MI, Rebecca (fiancé Jeremy Canze) Baumgras of Owosso, Randy Lyon, Rachel Baumgras and Aimee Baumgras, all of Ovid, great grandchild, Haven Baumgras of Owosso and sister, Reba (Richard) Rummell of Ovid. He was preceded in death by his brother, Dail Ackels and sister, Ardis Troyer. 

A memorial service will take place Saturday, February 7, at 2 P.M. at The Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, St. Johns. Memorials may be made to his family. Arrangements by the Houghton Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes, Ovid.

Glenn F. Conger, 77, retired farmer, truck driver, and Melody Bar (Owosso) owner, died Tuesday February 3, 2004. Services 10:30 a.m. Friday at Holy Family Catholic Church, Ovid. Arrangements by Smith Family Funeral Homes Elsie Chapel.

thornton.jpg (8014 bytes)Anna Mae Thornton age 94 of Ovid, Michigan died Sunday, February 01, 2004 at the Ovid Healthcare Center. She was a retired beautician who owned her own beauty shop in Ovid for many years.

Funeral Services will be held Thursday, February 5, 2004 at 1:00 P.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel. Pastor David Blair will officiate and burial will take place at Maple Grove Cemetery, Ovid, Michigan. Visitation will be Wednesday 3 – 8 P.M.

Anna Mae was born December 21, 1909 in Yugoslavia the daughter of John & Anna (Ozuat) Besko. On April 7, 1930 she married Theodore J. Thornton in Duplain Township, Michigan. Ted died April 18, 1987. Anna resided most of her life in the Elsie, Owosso & Ovid area. Anna Mae was a homemaker and she was appointed by Governor Williams to serve as a member of the State of Michigan Board of Cosmetology. Anna Mae was also a member of the Order of Easter Star in Elsie.

Survivors include her daughter, Carol & George Curry of Upland, California, son Douglas Thornton of Williamston, Michigan, 4 grandchildren & 3 great grand children, 1 sister, Mary & John Srnec of Owosso, Michigan, 2 brothers, Henry & Donna Besko of St. Johns, Michigan, George & Adelia Besko of Flint, Michigan and many nieces & nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents, 1 sister & 3 brothers. Memorials can be made to Ovid Healthcare Center, Activity Fund. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel.

Stanley F. Thelen

Thelen, age of 76, went to be with the Lord January 30, 2004, surrounded by his family, minutes after receiving blessings for 50 years of marriage.  He was born in Fowler, Michigan on July 20, 1927, the son of Julius J. and Rosa H. (Spitzley) Thelen and retired as an industrial gas serviceman with Consumers Power Company after 39 years of service.  He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and the American Legion Post #153 having served in the US Army.  Stan married Rita VanElls on January 30, 1954 and she survives him.   

He is also survived by six daughters, Renee (Lee) Lynam of Wyoming, Michigan, Shirley (Bryan) Glowacki of St. Petersburg, Florida, Marcia (Keith) Peterson, Marilyn Thelen and friend Andy Radosa, Denise (Kyle) Knight, and Lisa (Jeff) Smith, all of St. Johns, five sons, Patrick of Haslett, Bill (Renee’), Charlie (Natalie), Jim (Cyndi) and John (Judi), all of St. Johns, 28 grandchildren and one great grandson.  Stan is also survived by two sisters, Thelma (Hilary) Simon of Westphalia & Gladys (Jim) Armbrustmacher of Fowler and three brothers, Donald (Anne) of Saginaw, Kenneth (Jan) of Fowler and Richard (Rosemary) of Mt. Pleasant and one sister-in-law, Therese Thelen of Lansing.  He was preceded in death by his parents, one grandson, Matthew Thomas Lynam and one brother, Elmer Thelen.  

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, February 3, 2004 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery with Rev. Fr. Eoin Murphy officiating.   Visitation will be 9-8 Sunday and Monday with the family present 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. Sunday and Monday at the Osgood Funeral Home.  A Knights of Columbus Rosary will be prayed 8 P.M. on Sunday and a Vigil Service will be prayed 8 P.M. on Monday at the funeral home.  Memorials may be made to Hospice House of Mid-Michigan, Hazel Findlay Manor or Clinton County Veterans Memorial Fund.  Military graveside services will be provided by the St. Johns Honor Guard.

Mary Antoinette Smith

So he put his arms around her and whispered, “Come with me.” With tear-filled eyes we watched her suffer and fade away. Although we loved her deeply we could not make her stay. A golden heart stopped beating hard-working hands put to rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us he only takes the best.

Mary Antoinette Smith was born to Joseph P. and Elizabeth R. (Thelen) Fedewa on December 15, 1918 and passed away on January 29, 2004 at the age of 85. Mary was a homemaker, a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Ladies Altar Society. She married Joseph C. Smith on August 18, 1943 and he preceded her in death on July 20, 1977. 

Surviving are two sons, Joseph R. (Sue) Smith of DeWitt and Charles (Debbie) Smith of St. Johns, two daughters, Bernadette (Paul) Droste of Lansing and Betty (Stephen) Goodman of Portland, daughter-in-law, Joan (Butch) Schneider of St. Johns, fifteen grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, five brothers, Leo (Alberta) Fedewa, Rev. Fr. Sylvester Fedewa, James (Mary Ann) Fedewa, Joseph (Janice) Fedewa, all of Westphalia, and Rev. Fr. Matthew Fedewa of Lansing, and four sisters, Bernita Vitek, Margaret (Clair) Thelen, all of St. Johns, Odelia (Gerald) Thelen of Fowler, and Sr. Joanne Fedewa of Flint. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Mark Smith, and one sister, Catherine VanAcker. 

Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:00 A.M. Monday, February 2, 2004 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery with Rev. Fr. Sylvester Fedewa as celebrant and Frs. Eoin Murphy and Matthew Fedewa as concelebrants. The family will receive relatives and friends 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Saturday and Sunday at the Osgood Funeral Home with a rosary prayed 3 P.M. both days and a vigil service 7 P.M. both days. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or St. Joseph Children’s Educational Fund.
