Marie Therese Shelton

Marie Therese ( Anglim ) Shelton age 61 a St. Johns resident was called home to be with the Lord Sunday, July 4, 2004.

Marie was born on January 24, 1943 in Ironwood, Michigan, one of 5 children born to James & Ruth ( Nebel ) Anglim. She graduated from St. Ambrose High School in Ironwood, MI in 1961 and attended Eastern Michigan University graduating in 1965 with a teaching degree specializing in Special Education. Marie taught in Mt. Clemens, MI and retired from Ashley Community Schools after teaching Kindergarten and Special Education. She always strove to help others, instilling self-confidence and restoring faith in humanity in those she taught and met. She loved spending time with family and friends and her legacy of caring will continue to live on through them. Marie was a past president of the St. Johns, MI chapter of Right to Life, volunteered with the Clinton County Arts Council and was a member of the St. Anne’s Guild of the St. Joseph Catholic Church. Preceding her in death were her brothers Roy & Adrian Anglim, her parents, her daughter Meghan, and her mother-in-law Agnes Shelton.

Surviving is her husband of 38 years, Brent Shelton, 4 Children: Brent Shelton II, Stephanie Shelton, Bridgette (Eric) Shelton-Brown, and Lucas Shelton, sisters, Hazel Anderson of Wakefield, MI and Cora-Ann Paulson of Duluth, MN, father-in-law John Shelton, and several nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church of St. Johns, MI on Friday, July 9, 2004 at 10:00A.M. Rev. Fr. Kenneth McDonald will officiate with burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery, St. Johns, Michigan

Visitation will be Wednesday, July 7, 4-8 P.M. and Thursday, July 8, 2-8 P.M. with family present 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Johns Chapel. Rosary will be prayed Thursday, July 8, 2004 at 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers those desiring can contribute to Sparrow Home Hospice, Right to life of Michigan of the Clinton County Arts Council. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Johns, Chapel.

Arthur "Chip" Cardy

Arthur "Chip" Cardy, age 55, of rural Laingsburg, passed away Thursday, July 1, 2004 at Memorial Healthcare.

Mr. Cardy had worked for Industrial Phosphate in St. Johns, St. Lawrence Hospital in Lansing, and most recently was a home healthcare worker. Chip always found time to work the family farm.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 am, Wednesday, July 7, 2004 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with Msgr. Robert Lunsford officiating. Visitation at the Nelson-House Funeral Home will be Monday from 3-8 pm and Tuesday from 9 am to 8 pm. A rosary will be prayed Tuesday at 7 pm.

Chip was born August 28, 1948 in Petoskey, Michigan, the son of Arthur H. and Mary (Kruzel) Cardy. He attended Everett High School in Lansing and graduated from St. Johns High School in 1967.

On November 5, 1994 he married Vickie Davis Townsend in St. Johns. Chip was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church where he sang in the choir for many years. He was a member of S.P.E.B.S.Q.S.A. Inc. singing with the Barbershop Quartets, Gallery and Collector's Choice. Chip was a special olympics coach, he loved to garden, raise black angus beef cattle, and attend garage sales.

Survivors include his wife, Vickie; daughter, Nadean (Kevin) McGarvey, of Vestaburg; son, Jeremy Townsend, of Jackson; 2 grandchildren, Tyler and Kailee; mother, Mary, of St. Johns; 2 sisters, Aleta (Michael) Fullmer, of DeWitt, and Lori (Norman) Fudge, of Holt. He was a role model to his nieces and nephews and had many loving cousins. He is also survived by his godfather, Ignance Kruzel; and his godchildren, Justin and Kristin Fudge, and Michelle Schooler.

He was predeceased by his father; brother, Douglas Lee; and godmother, Stasia Witners. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of St. Johns.

Robert G. Young

Young-Robert.jpg (7071 bytes)Robert G. Young died July 1, 2004 at the age of 84. He was born in St. Johns on March 4, 1920, the son of William I. and Eva M. (Floate) Young. He was a retired carpenter and a member of the First Church of God. Robert married June Birdsley in St. Johns on July 24, 1943 and she survives him.

Also surviving are his children, Sarah Young of Catonsville, MD, William (Mary Ann) Young of St. Johns, Peggy (Richard) Tupper of Barryton, MI, Mark (Brenda) Young of Chesaning, MI, Kevin (Kathy) Young of Elsie and Scott (Brenda) Young of St. Johns, grandchildren, Tina (Josh) Courser, Susan (Mark) Nelson, Bobbie Jo (Matt) Kemp, Jamie Paksi, Jason Young, Aaron Young and Kari Young and great grandchildren, Emily Kemp, Jacob Kemp and Connor Nelson. He was preceded in death by his parents and daughter, Sharon Young.

Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M. Saturday, July 3, 2004 at the Osgood Funeral Home, burial at Sowle Cemetery with Pastor Paul Daniels officiating. The public is welcome for visitation from 9-9 Friday with the family present 2-4 and 7-9 P.M. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the First Church of God.

palatka.jpg (4351 bytes)Steven V. Palatka Sr. age 65 of Elsie, Michigan died Wednesday, June 30, 2004 at Owosso Memorial Hospital in Owosso, Michigan.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on July 3, 2004 at 11:00 A.M. at Holy Family Catholic Church in Ovid, MI. Rev. Fr. Paul Cummings will officiate with burial at Fairfield Township Cemetery, Fairfield Township, MI. Visitation will be held Thursday July 1, 2004 6-8 P.M. and Friday, July 2, 2004 3-8 P.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel. Combined Knights of Columbus & Parrish Rosary will be prayed Friday, July 2, 2004 at 7:30 P.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel.

Steve was born on February 14, 1939 in Fairfield Township, Michigan the son of Frank Anthony & Mary Ann ( Gregor ) Palatka. He graduated from Ovid High School with the class of 1958. He married Shirley Thompson on October 3, 1959 at St. Cyril's Catholic Church, Bannister, MI. Steve owned and operated Steve’s Refuse for 21 years. He then retired from Waste Management in Lansing in 2002. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and farming. He especially loved & enjoyed his grandchildren. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Ovid, MI, 4th Degree Knights of Columbia, a member of Ovid Lions Club, and Men’s Club at Holy Family Catholic Church.

He is survived by his wife Shirley Palatka of Elsie, MI, 3 daughters, Brenda & Rick Burkett of Elsie, MI, Lisa & Bob Cummingham of Onsted, MI, Christine & Michael Phillips II of Owosso, MI, 2 sons, Steven & Sherry Palatka Jr. of St. Johns, MI, Rodney Palatka of Corunna, MI, 6 grandchildren, J.R., Holly, Jacob, Makaylin, Zachary, & Brayden, mother Mary Palatka of Elsie, MI, 2 sisters, Amelia & Joe Tejkl Sr. of Elsie, MI, Jeanette & Tim Murry of Dimondale, MI, 2 brothers, Frank & Ruth Ann Palatka of Cadillac, MI, Richard & Linda Palatka of Owosso, MI and mother-in-law Doris Thompson of Ovid, MI. He was predeceased by his father Frank, father-in-law Cecil (Pete) Thompson.

Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel.

 

Marguerite E. Beeman

Marguerite E. Beeman died June 28, 2004 at the age of 96. She was born March 22, 1908 in Elsie, Michigan to George and Grace (Fields) Phelps. She was raised in the Ovid area where she attended country schools and graduated in the first graduating class of 1926 at Ovid High School on High Street. After graduating, she worked for Dr. Taylor in Ovid. She married Herbert Beeman on May 14, 1927 and he preceded her in death October 31, 1977.

Surviving are two sons, Herbert (Dora) Beeman of Ovid and Duane Beeman of Arizona, five grandchildren, many great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren, and two sisters, Reva Vaughan of Holt and Donna Smith of Bath. In addition to her husband, Marguerite was preceded in death by one son, Jack Beeman and two brothers, Henry and Galen Phelps.

At her request, there will be no visitation or funeral service. A private burial will be in Middlebury Cemetery. Arrangements by Houghton Chapel of Osgood Funeral Homes, Ovid.
