Jerry L. Gavenda

Jerry L. Gavenda died July 13, 2004 at the age of 53. Born in St. Johns, on January 31, 1951, he was the son of Joseph and Jean (Abbott) Gavenda. He was a General Motors retiree. Jerry married Susan Luttig on September 30, 1972 in Fowler and she survives him.

Also surviving are children, Kurt and wife Becky (Yordy) Gavenda of Ashley, Rochelle and husband Gary Abbott Jr. of St. Johns, Wayne and wife Heidi (LaFreniere) Gavenda of Ithaca, and his six grandchildren, Alysha, Doug and Ashley Gavenda, Jasmine and Coltin Gavenda, and Max Abbott. He is also survived by his father, Joseph Gavenda, siblings, Jean and Larry Baker, Joe and Mary Gavenda, Joann and Dale Walton, Jim and Linda Gavenda and one uncle, George Abbott Jr. He also leaves behind many close family members and good friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, Jean Gavenda.

Funeral services will be held at the Abbott Chapel of Osgood Funeral Homes located at 509 E. Main St., Maple Rapids on Saturday, July 17, 2004 at 11:00 A.M., with Pastor Joe Pendleton officiating. Interment will follow at Sowle Cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home Friday all day with family present 2-4 and 6-8. Sympathy may be expressed in the form of memorials to Carson Home Hospice in memory of Jerry.

Donald J. Riddle

Funeral Services will be held Friday, July 16, 2004 at 11:00 A.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Johns Chapel. Pastor Tim Cockroft will officiate with burial at Union Home Cemetery in Greenbush Township, Michigan. Visitation will be held Wednesday, July 14, 2004 6-8 P.M. and Thursday, July 15, 2004 2-8 P.M. with family present 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Johns Chapel.

Donald was born on September 30, 1926 in Webberville, Michigan the son of Donald & Mertie ( Meachum ) Pratt. He graduated from St. Johns High School with the class of 1943. He married Doris Winslow in St. Johns, Michigan on May 29, 1947. Donald was a retired electrician from Oldsmobile after 32 years of service. He enjoyed model trains. He was a member of St. Johns Church of the Nazarene. He served in the U.S. Army and was a life member of VFW Post #4113 in St. Johns, Michigan.

He is survived by his wife Doris Riddle of St. Johns, MI, daughter Donna & Keith Hatcher of St. Johns, MI, son Richard Riddle of St. Johns, MI, 4 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, and brother Charles & Penny Riddle of Arizona. He is predeceased by his parents.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Clinton County or St. Johns Church of the Nazarene. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Johns Chapel.

Paul Panik

panik.jpg (4872 bytes)Paul Panik age 70 of Elsie, Michigan died Saturday, July 10, 2004 at Ovid Healthcare Center, Ovid, Michigan.

Memorial Services will be held on Sunday, July 18, 2004 at 1:00 P.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel. Mr. Paul Mikulcik will officiate.

Paul was born in Chicago, IL on September 3, 1933 the son of Paul & Anna (Hucko) Panik. He married Rose Mikulcik on April 19, 1958 in Corunna, Michigan. He retired from Lear Corporation in 1999. He served in the U.S. Navy and was a member of Legion Post #502 in Elsie, Michigan. He enjoyed baseball, fishing, hunting, and camping. He resided most of his life in the Elsie area.

He was survived by his wife Rose Panik of Elsie, MI, 1 daughter Peggy & Joe Smith of Brant, MI, 1 son Paul & Monica Panik of Grand Blanc, MI, 2 grandsons, T.J. Rose & Brandon Smith, and 1 brother John & Ellen Panik of Elsie, MI. He is predeceased by his parents.

Mary Frances Horak

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, July 10, 2004 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Cyril's Catholic Church, Bannister, Michigan. Rev. Fr. Wolfgang Streichardt will officiate with burial at Ford Cemetery, Gratiot County, MI. Visitation will be held Friday July 9, 2004 2-8 P.M. Rosary will be prayed Friday July 9, 2004 at 7:00 P.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel and on Saturday July 10, 2004 at 10:00 A.M. at St. Cyril's Catholic Church in Bannister before Mass.

Mary was born on November 23, 1909 in Chicago, IL to Frank & Katherine ( Horak ) Slovacek. She married Thomas Horak on June 1, 1929 in Detroit, MI. Thomas passed away on August 16, 1988. Mary was a homemaker and a cook at Ovid Elsie High School for many years. She enjoyed quilting, crocheting, and sewing. She was a member of St. Cyril's Catholic Church in Bannister, MI and a member of the St. Cyril's Catholic Church Alter Society. She resided most of her life in Elsie, moving here from Detroit, MI.

She is survived by 2 daughters, Mary Frances & Frank Kasparek of Howell, MI, Barbara & Terry Seybert of Arizona, 2 sons, Gerald Anthony & Margaret Ann Horak of Elsie, MI, James & Marsha Horak of Munster, IN, 16 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandchild, and her sister, Helen Vlcek of Elsie, MI. She is predeceased by her parents, grandson Kenneth and brother Frank.

Memorials may be made to St. Cyril's Catholic Church, Bannister, MI. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel.

Clare J. Stolz Jr.

Clare J. Stolz age 62 of DeWitt, Michigan died on Friday, July 09, 2004 at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, Michigan. He was a retired Tool & Die repairman.


Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 13, 2004 at 2:00 P.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Johns Chapel. Burial will take place at Rose Cemetery in Bath, Michigan. Visitation will be Sunday 5-8 P.M. and Monday 2-8 P.M. with the family present 2-4 & 6-8 P.M.
Clare was born on August 15, 1941 the son of Clare & Evelyn ( Garrett ) Stolz Sr. He resided most of his life in DeWitt, Michigan and was a lifetime member of the NRA.

On December 1, 1967 he married Nancy Lou Reeves in LasVegas, Nevada. Clare loved antiques.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy Lou Stolz of DeWitt, Michigan, 2 sons Jeff Stolz of Ludington, Michigan, Steve & Angie Stolz of Elsie, Michigan, 4 grandchildren Josh, Jessica, Austin & Bryan, 1 sister Vicky Williovize of Louisville, Kentucky and 1 brother, Craig & Petty Stolz of Shell Beach, California. He was predeceased by his parents.

Kathy Albright

She was born in St. Johns, Michigan December 1, 1950, the daughter of Arthur Ormonde and Barbara Jean (Johnson) Price. Kathy graduated from Ovid-Elsie High School and retired from the Michigan Department of Transportation in 2000. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Eaton Rapids. Kathy married Duane J. Albright August 28, 1982 in Lansing.

Kathy is survived by her husband of 21 years, Duane Albright of Charlotte, son, Ronald Lynn (Danette) Winans of Perry, grandson, Jordan Winans, granddaughter, Morgan Winans, sister, Suzanne (Evert) Hendley of St. Johns and brother, Arthur Ormonde (Deborah) Price, Jr. of Ovid, parents-in-law, Paul and Gwen Albright of Eaton Rapids, numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Barbara “Bobbie” Price.

Memorial Services will be 1:00 P.M. on Tuesday, July 13, 2004 at the Houghton Chapel of Osgood Funeral Homes, 232 E. Oak St. in Ovid, burial at Maple Grove Cemetery with Pastor Tom Evans officiating. Cora was born in Stillwater, Oklahoma on September 23, 1937 the daughter of Charles & Lula ( Davis ) Stephens. She married Marty Mayer on June 27, 1964 in Reno, Nevada. Cora was a homemaker, and she loved spending time with her family. She was a member of Kingdom of Jehovah Witness of St. Johns, MI. She resided most of her life in St. Johns, Michigan.

She is survived by her husband Marty Mayer of St. Johns, MI, son Chuck Feise of Lansing, MI, daughter Judy & Darren Huntsman of St. Johns, MI, son Jim Mayer of Perrinton, MI, daughter Janette Mayer & fiancé Ken Spalding of Perrinton, MI, daughter Janeen Taylor of St. Johns, MI, son Joe & Kristina Mayer of St. Johns, MI, 12 grandchildren, brother Jack Stephens of Nebraska and sister Iva Mae McDonald of Virginia. She is predeceased by her parents, 3 brothers, and 2 sisters.
