Glenwyn L. Smith

Glenwyn L. Smith, 73, died July 25, 2004 in Johnstown, PA. He was born August 6, 1930 in Watertown Township, Michigan the son of Lyle F. and Helen M. (Newman) Smith. He retired from the United States Air Force after 20 years of service to his country. He later worked as a special agent for the Michigan Millers Insurance Company in Lansing, Michigan and later transferred to Reading, Pennsylvania. Since 1978, he owned/operated Smith Insurance Agency in Boalsburg, PA. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge. On December 6, 1952, he married Geraldine “Gerry” Mae Pope and she preceded him in death September 29, 1997.

Glen is survived by three sons, Steven (Penny) Smith of Oregon, Michael (Virginia) Smith of Boalsburg, PA and Jeffrey (Cynde) Smith of Johnstown, PA, six grandchildren, and three brothers, Roger (Sondra) Smith of Nevada, Rowlan (LaRene) Smith of St. Johns, MI and Gerald (Barbara) Smith of DeWitt, MI.

Funeral Services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, July 29 at Osgood Funeral Home, St. Johns, burial at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens with Rev. Matt Olson officiating. The family will receive friends Wednesday 6:00 pm – 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Boalsburg, Pennsylvania Fire Company or the Air Force Sergeants Association.

Karin E. Powers,  55, died July 22. Services 11 a.m. Thursday at Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Johns Chapel.

Jack Lee Felker, III, 25, formerly of Perry, computer repairman, died Sunday of natural causes. Services 1 p.m. Friday at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Corunna Chapel.

Charles J. (Charlie) Sillman

C_Sillman.jpg (4811 bytes)Charles J.(Charlie) Sillman died Monday July 26, 2004 at the age of 46.  He was born October 16, 1957 in St. Johns the son of M. Stuart and Lois (Witt) Sillman.  Charlie was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, a graduate of St. Johns High School, class of 1975 and was a mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service.

Surviving are his parents M. Stuart & Lois Sillman of St. Johns Brother, Richard Sillman (Jan Conley) of Pewamo, sisters Diana (Wayne) Woodbury, Laurie Chant (Randy Pollock) all of St. Johns and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 29, 2004 at St. Peter Lutheran Church at 11:00 A.M. with Pastor Jeffrey Heimsoth officiating.  Burial will be at St. Peter Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday and  2-4 & 6-8 P.M. on Wednesday at the Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, 1500 Waterford Parkway, St. Johns. Memorials may be made to St. Peter Lutheran Building Fund or the American Heart Assn.

N.L. “Brub” Cowan

cowan.jpg (6079 bytes)N.L. “Brub” Cowan, age 78, passed away Sunday, July 25, 2004, in Norton Shores.   He was born the sixth of nine children on November 5, 1925, in Chesaning, MI to Charles & Lillian (Phillips) Cowan.  He graduated from Chesaning High School. At age 17 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served with the 3rd Marine Division, seeing action in the landings at Guam and Iwo Jima, where he was wounded.  In 1948, he married the former Elly Schmiege and she survives him along with their daughter Beth Ann Cowan of Norton Shores. 

Brub & Elly lived in St.Johns, MI for 43 years before moving to Muskegon in 2001 to live with their daughter Beth.  Brub was a very active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and currently was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. 

Also surviving are 4 sisters, Kathleen (Robert) Shooltz of Lake Orion, MI, Alice (Ernest “Bud”) Alderson of Spring Hill, FL, Charlotte Cowan of Texas and Wilma (Fred) Wesley of Chesaning, MI; many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers and 2 sisters. 

Services will be 11 AM Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church (3225 Roosevelt Rd, Muskegon, MI 49441) with the Rev. Dennis L. Lassanske officiating.  Graveside services and interment will be at 4:30 PM Thursday in Wildwood Cemetery, Chesaning, MI.  Visitation will be 2-4 & 6-8PM Wednesday also at Trinity Lutheran Church.  Memorials may be made to West Shore Lutheran School, (3225 Roosevelt Rd., Muskegon, MI 49441) will be appreciated.  .   Arrangements by The Walburn Chapel Sytsema Funeral Homes, Inc. Ray D. McMurphy

Ray D. McMurphy,  Fenwick, MI Formerly of Ovid, MI and St. Johns, MI Age 84, died Friday, July 23, 2004 at a Grand Rapids hospital. Born April 28, 1920 in Lake City, one of seven children born to Levi A. and Maggie (Cornwill) McMurphy. Ray served in the Army Air Corp during World War II, stationed in Shawnbrooke, England. In the 1950s he worked as a bricklayer and contractor and later owned and operated a gas station in East Lansing. Mr. McMurphy retired after 32 years of service, as a Furnace Operator and in Maintenance for Motor Wheel in Lansing. He was an avid fisherman and hunter and enjoyed woodworking. He was preceded in death by his wife, Winifred Carol (Baker) McMurphy and 5 brothers and sisters.

Surviving are his 10 children, Patricia A. (David) Ellsworth of Eaton Rapids, Mary A. (John) Kapp of Stanton, Michael R. McMurphy of Eaton Rapids, Donald L. McMurphy of Eaton Rapids, Susie Jo McMurphy of London, England, Rosalie Kimmins of London, England, Johnny Ray McMurphy of London, England, Dianna Shellitto of Ovid, Michael (Keely) Salisbury of Grand Ledge and Patrick A. Salisbury of St. Johns; 12 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; and 1 great great granddaughter; brother, Clyde (Anna) McMurphy of Laingsburg; numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 27 at 10:30 a.m. from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids with burial following in Alchin Farm Cemetery in Webberville. Family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. For those desiring memorial gifts may be made to your local V.F.W. organization, in memory of Ray D. McMurphy.

Mildred E. (Millie) Hyler

Hiler_Mildred.jpg (7234 bytes)Mildred E. (Millie) Hyler died Thursday July 22, 2004 at the age of 83. She was born May 13, 1921 in Mt. Pleasant, MI the daughter of Isaac John and Susan Jane (Winegardner) Wiggins. Millie was a sales clerk at the D & C Variety Store in St. Johns, primarily working at the candy   counter. She married E. O. (Squeak) Hyler on December 23, 1939 and he preceded her in death. Also preceding her in death is a daughter-in-law, Peggy Hyler, two brothers, Glenn and Lyle Wiggins, sister and brother-in-law Tressa and Levi Brown.

Millie is survived by two daughters, Patsy (Willard) Root of Florida, Sandra (James) Wagar of St. Johns, son Bruce Hyler of  Roscommon, step-daughter, Maire (Walter) Boyd of Lexington, MI. Several grand and great grandchildren, sister Gerry Fleck of Haslett, brother-in-law, Ronald Hyler of St. Johns.

There will be no services or visitation. Memorials may be made to Hazel I. Findlay Country Manor or Sparrow Hospice and Home Health.Arrangements and service was provided by the Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, St. Johns, MI

Gerald E. Miller

Gerald E. Miller, Westphalia, MI Age 71, passed away on Thursday, July 22, 2004. He was born on September 15, 1932 in Westphalia Township the son of Elmer and Dorothy (Nurenberg) Miller. Mr. Miller was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Westphalia, and the Knight of Columbus St. Jude Thaddeus Council #2890. He was a Veteran of the Korean War serving in the United States Army and was a member of the Portland American Legion Post #129. He owned and operated Miller Sand and Gravel until his retirement in 1996 and loved to fish. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Jim Miller.

Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Jane T. Miller of Westphalia; 7 children, Michael (Kathy) Miller of Portland, Dennis (Cindy) Miller of Westphalia, Karin (Ron) Katch of DeWitt, Conni (Tim) Thelen of Westphalia, Robert (Bobbi Jo) Miller of Fowlerville, Nanci (Pete) Greenfield of Corona, CA, and Beth (Paul) Smith of Westphalia; 19 grandchildren; 1 great grandchild; 2 sisters, Kathleen (Bill) Gates of Capitin, NM and Janice Schied of Roswell, NM; brother, Gene (Carol) Miller of Goshen, IN; several nieces and nephews.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Cecilio Reyna, Pastor at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 26, 2004 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Westphalia with Rite of Committal following at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Military Honors will be provided by the Portland VFW Post #4090. The family will receive friends at the St. Mary's Funeral Chapel, 210 N. Westphalia Street, Westphalia from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Rosaries will be prayed at 3 and 8 p.m. both days. Arrangements are entrusted to the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, Portland.

Florence E. Ringle

ringle.jpg (7874 bytes)Florence E. Ringle age 93 of Elsie, Michigan died Thursday, July 22, 2004 at Ovid Healthcare Center, Ovid, Michigan.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, July 24, 2004 at 11:00 A.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel. Pastor Billie Lou Gillespie-Brown will officiate with burial at Ithaca Cemetery, Ithaca, MI. Visitation will be held Friday, July 23, 2004 from 2-8 P.M. with family present 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel.

Florence was born on April 10, 1911 in Elsie, Michigan the daughter of William Franklin & Alena Mae ( Murray ) Somers. She graduated from Elsie High School with the class of 1929. Florence married John Kenneth Ringle on February 7, 1948 in Ithaca, Michigan. John died in 1955. She was a retired telephone operator from GTE in Alma in 1969 after 35 years of service. Throughout her life she never had a driver’s license and yet she always got where she needed to be. She enjoyed knitting and reading. Florence was a member of Chapin United Methodist Church. She resided most of her life in Elsie, Michigan and Florida.

She is survived by her brother James & Vivian Somers of Elsie, MI and 6 nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents, 1 sister Harriet and 1 brother Alfred.

Memorials may be made to Chapin United Methodist Church, Chapin, MI and Memorial Healthcare Hospice. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel
