Hazel M. Stevens, age 80, died Monday, August 9, 2004. She was born in Clark County, Wisconsin on March 16, 1924, the daughter of Archie and Dulcie (Smith) Wanless. She attended Pilgrim United Methodist Church and was a former member of St. Johns Womens Bowling Association. Hazel married Loyal Stevens in St. Johns on January 30, 1943. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Loyal Stevens of St. Johns, one daughter, Patricia Paksi of St. Johns, two sons, Blaine (Chris) Stevens and Dennis (Pat) Stevens, all of St. Johns, six grandchildren, Kimberly Paksi of St. Johns, Craig Paksi of Lansing, Robert (Amber) Stevens of Onondaga, MI, Jessica (Ben) Whitehead of Kentwood, MI, Donavan Stevens and Joshua Stevens, both of St. Johns and three great grandchildren, Cody Armitage, Mackenzie Stevens and Tyler Whitehead. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Marion Mann and Hilda Kirvan, brother, Bill Wanless and both parents, Archie and Dulcie Wanless. Funeral Services will be 1:00 P.M. Thursday, August 12, 2004 at Osgood Funeral Home, burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery with Rev. Kay Pratt officiating. The family will receive friends 6:00-8:00 Tuesday and 9:00-8:00 Wednesday with the family present 2:00-4:00 & 6:00-8:00. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimers Association (Clinton County Chapter), Pilgrim United Methodist Church or Hospice House of Mid-Michigan. B. Stanley Pocuis, 90, of Bradenton, Fla., died Aug. 4, 2004. He was born in Chicago, Ill., Aug. 14, 1913 the son of Bennie and Elbertina (Jakumas) Pocuis. He attended a rural one-room school in central Michigan through the eighth grade and graduated salutatorian from Muir High School in 1932. He earned his B.S. Degree in Science and Mathematics along with a teaching certificate from Michigan State University in 1938. On June 15, 1940, he married Mildred Moldenhauer. She
preceded him in death Oct. 6, 2002. He taught science and math at Jonesville High School in Jonesville, Mich., from 1938-1940. He moved to St. Johns in 1940 and taught physics, chemistry, and math at Rodney B. Wilson High School and during the war years, taught radio theory and aeronautics to pre-inductive students. In 1946 he became principal of Rodney B. Wilson High School, a position he held for 23 years. In 1969 he became superintendent of the Clinton County Intermediate School District. He retired from education in 1975. The Pocuis Auditorium at St. Johns High School is named in his honor. He is survived by one daughter, Susan Kay Calva of Alhambra, Calif., and one son, Dr. D. Leo Pocuis of Bremerton, Wash.; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Lynne Pocuis. Memorial Services will be held at a later date at First United Methodist Church in St. Johns with cremains buried at North Plains Cemetery in Muir. Memorials may be made to St. Johns High School Scholarship Fund, 105 W. Sickles St., St. Johns, MI 48879. Audra G. Knight died Saturday, August 7, 2004 at the age of 88. She was born August 1, 1916 in St. Johns the daughter of Louis and Mary (VanderLee) Hettler and has lived all her life in St. Johns. Audra was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and worked in the A.S.C.S. office for many years. She married William S. Knight Jr. on November 15, 1935 and he preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by a grand daughter Melinda English. Audra is survived by four sons, Barry (Karen) of Howell,

Funeral Home 1500 Frank J. Chovance Sr., age 77, went to be with his heavenly family on Sunday, August 8, 2004, after a brief illness. Funeral services for Frank will be held on Wednesday, August 11 at 11:00 A.m. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel. Rev. Fr. Wolfgang Streichardt and Mr. Thomas Bradley will officiate. Burial will take place at Ford Cemetery in Gratiot County, Michigan. Visitation will be Monday & Tuesday from 2-8 P.m. with the family present 2-4 & 6-8 P.m. Frank was born November 17, 1926 in Perrinton, Michigan, the son of August and Maria Chovance. He married Irene Cerny on November 10, 1951 in Bannister, Michigan. During his life, Frank was proud to have served in the U.S. Marines during WW II. He was drafted in his senior year of high school and the yearbook was dedicated to him in his honor. He was a life member of the American Legion Post #4113, and a member of the ZCBJ Lodge #225 in Bannister. He had worked for Eugene Welding and farmed. Frank loved gardening, watching sports, reading, crossword puzzles and spend time with his family. He enjoyed taking his family to their cottage up north. Survivors include his wife; Irene Chovance of Bannister, Michigan, 3 daughters; Sharon Pavlik of Dewitt, Michigan, Patricia & Terry Larner of Perry, Michigan, Jean & Vince Foess of Farwell, Michigan and 1 son; Frank & Patty Chovance Jr. of Bath, Michigan. Also surviving Frank are 9 grandchildren; Kimberly, Steven, Kristina, Mary, Travis, Tim, Steve, Ricky and Josie. He was predeceased in death by his parents, 1 grandson, John, 1 sister, Mary and 2 brothers, Gus and Steve. Memorials may be made to Carson City Hospice or the ZCBJ Lodge #225. The family is being served by the Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel. Basil L. Watson, age 80, died Friday, August 6, 2004 at his home. Born September 28, 1923 in Lansing to Frederick and Hattie (Hudson) Watson; Basil attended Holmes Street and Walter French Schools and graduated from Eastern High School in 1942. Basil was a veteran of World War II and retired in 1985 from General Motors Yard Gang. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Elmer; two wives, Dorothy (1984) and Martha (2004). Basil is survived by four children, Terry (Chris) Watson of Portage, John and Doug Watson both of Lansing, and Sharon (Rick) Rethamel of Perry; three sisters, Bernice Harner of Morley, LaVina Macitek of DeWitt and Clarice Sperry of West Branch; three brothers, Gerald Watson of DeWitt, Irvin Watson Lansing, and Raymond of St. Johns; three grandchildren, and three step-children, James Watson of Charlotte, Lloyd W. Bill Watson of Lansing, and Sharon Dedic of Owosso. Funeral Services will be 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, August 10, 2004

Bancroft age 74 of Ann Arbor, Michigan formerly of St. Johns, Michigan died Tuesday, August 3, 2004 at St. Joseph Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, August 7, 2004 at 11:00 A.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Johns Chapel. Mr. Marty Moore will officiate with internment at Fort Custer National Cemetery, Battle Creek, Michigan. Visitation will be held on Friday, August 6, 2004 2-8 P.M. with family present 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. Charles was born on January 14, 1930 in Eureka Michigan the son of Judson O. & Lora ( Faragher ) Bancroft. He married Eleanor Guild on April 8, 1972 in St. Johns Michigan. Eleanor died on September 16, 1997. He was a farmer. He served in the U.S. Army and was a life member of Owosso VFW Post and DAV of Shiawassee County.
