Gayle A. Pontius

martin_gayle.jpg (4827 bytes)Gayle A. Pontius, 58 of rural DeWitt died Tuesday Aug. 17, 2004 at her home. She was born June 5, 1946 in Ovid, MI the daughter of Carl & Mary (Brown) Martin. Gayle graduated from Ovid High School in 1964. On Sept. 10, 1966 she married Linn Pontius at Grove Bible Church.

Gayle, a homemaker, was Royal Monarch of The Red Hat Society, enjoyed garage sales and performed as Rainbow the Clown. Survivors include her husband, Linn; daughter Jenny Reeves of Bannister; son Martin & Elizabeth Pontius of Holt; adopted son William Reeves; 4 grandchildren known as Bumpy Road Grandma to Makala and Colton Reeves and Logan and Alita Pontius; 3 brothers Larry and Margo Martin of Ovid; Norman Martin and Barbara Galehouse of Ovid; Dennis and Penny Martin of Florida. She was preceded in death by her parents, 3 brothers and 2 sisters.

Funeral Services will be held on Friday, Aug. 20, 2004 at 1:00 P.M. at Grove Bible Church, with Pastor Robert Prange officiating. Burial will follow at Wacousta Cemetery. Visitation will be at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, St. Johns Wednesday 6-8 P.M. and Thursday, 9:00 A.M. to 9:00 P.M. with the family present 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. Thursday. Memorials may be given to Nashville Baptist Church.

Debbie McFarlane

Debbie McFarlane,  Eureka, MI Formerly of Lansing Debret Sue McFarlane went with God August 15, 2004. Born in Detroit to Donald and Dorothy (Upton) McFarlane on September 21, 1952, she was one big bubbly bundle of trouble and love. Debbie grew up in Detroit and Southfield. Subdued by schizophrenia after graduating from High School, she still brought smiles to everyone she met. She enjoyed music, church, crafts, collecting, jewelry, clothing, food, shopping and everyone's company. She was preceded in death by her mother, Dorothy McFarlane, and brother, Douglas Raymond McFarlane.

She is survived by one brother, David Keith McFarlane; her sister-in-law, Charlene Vanacker; and her father, Donald Walter McFarlane. She also leaves behind many friends from her home at Eureka House and New Passages, Community Mental Health, NAMI Lansing, Charter House, Justice In Mental Health Organization, St. Paul's Episcopal Church, and St. John's Episcopal Church; each one of them has done so much to help her and others in need.

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, August 21, 11 AM at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 218 Ottawa, Lansing, with a reception to follow at the church. Free parking available at the Roosevelt Parking Structure, entrance on Seymour Street. Burial took place in Acacia Park, Beverly Hills, MI. Arrangements are by Osgood Funeral Home, St. Johns.

Lyle R. Hallead

Hallead-Lyle.jpg (3648 bytes)Lyle Raymond Hallead, age 89 of Pickford, Michigan, formerly from St. Johns, died Sunday, August 15, 2004. He was born in Sanilac County, Michigan on April 20, 1915, the son of John (Alex) and Eva (Althea) (Holley) Hallead. Lyle married Carol Violet Coffman on December 25, 1936. Carol preceded him in death on October 2, 1978. He then married Agnes Lordson on September 14, 1979 and she preceded him in death on May 18, 1994. Lyle was a member of Pilgrim United Methodist Church. In early years, he coached many local youth in 4-H softball. Lyle was a farmer in Clinton County until moving to the Upper Peninsula in 1968. He continued to farm in Pickford and Rudyard. In later years, he spent his winters in Lake Wales, Florida. He has three sons, eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Surviving are sons, Vern R. (Sparky) Hallead of Avinger, Texas, Mervin E. (Betty) Hallead of St. Johns, Jay A. (Helen) Hallead of Huntington, Indiana, eight grandchildren, Steve (Amy) Hallead of Rockford, Matt Hallead of Grand Rapids, John (Jennifer) Hallead, Tom (Krista) Hallead, Jason Lyle Hallead all of St. Johns, Tim (Theresa) Hallead of Fowler, Shannon (Shane) Mills of Columbia City, Indiana, and Heather Hallead of Chicago, Illinois, seven great grandchildren, Justin, Jamie, Andrew, Sam and Maggie Hallead, Grace and Seth Mills, brother, Richard (Catherine) Hallead of Durand and Haines City, Florida, sister in law, Mildred Rathbun of St. Johns, several nieces, nephews and cousins. Lyle was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Roland L. and Ralph Hallead and one grand daughter, Susan Hallead.

Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M. Thursday, August 19, 2004 at Osgood Funeral Home, St. Johns, burial at South Bingham Cemetery with Rev. Brian Sheen officiating. Visitation will be 2-8 P.M. Wednesday with family present 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Memorials may be made to the Pickford Senior Citizen Center, sent to, Hattie Lockhart, 2010 W. John, PO Box 336, Pickford, MI 49774.

Barbara Ann Pease

pease_barbara.jpg (4286 bytes)Barbara Ann Pease, died August 14, 2004 at the age of 67. Born in Kenton , Ohio on November 11, 1937, she was the daughter to Robert and Eva (Robey) Haudenschield. She was a retired data entry clerk with the State of Michigan. Barbara enjoyed Girl Scouts, doll making, coin collecting, and knitting.

She is survived by her husband Don Pease of St. Johns, one daughter, Karen (William) Bond of St. Johns, and one son, Larry Pease of St. Johns, her mother, Eva Thompson and her Aunt, Anna White, both of St. Johns. She was preceded in death by one son, Michael Pease, and one sister, Thelma Kay Haudenschield.

Funeral will be 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, August 18, 2004 at Osgood Funeral Home, burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Monday and Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Kidney Foundation or The American Diabetes Association.

Doris E. (Hettinger) Pollard

Doris E. (Hettinger) Pollard died Wednesday, August 11, 2004 at the age of 74. She was born in Ovid Township, Michigan on July 25, 1930 the daughter of Verne and Eleanor Ilene (Welter) Hettinger. She was a member of the Shephardsville United Methodist Church and former secretary for Ovid-Elsie High School. On February 12, 1955, Doris married Thomas E. Pollard and he preceded her in death April 2, 1966.

She is survived by her son, Mark Pollard of Shepardsville, one sister, Donna Hettinger of Shepardsville, one brother, Donald (Janice) Hettinger of Ovid, two nephews, Brian (Theresa) Hettinger of Fremont and Jeff (Brenda) Hettinger of Owosso, one niece, Connie (Mike) Walter of Ovid, ten great nieces & nephews. In addition to her husband, Doris was preceded in death by her son, Randy Pollard in 1981.

Funeral Services will be 11:00 A.M. Saturday, August 14, 2004 at the Houghton Chapel of Osgood Funeral Homes, Ovid, burial at Maple Grove Cemetery with Rev. Kay Pratt officiating. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Ovid Healthcare Center-Activity Department or Shepardsville United Methodist Church.

Terry A. Johnson

Johnson-Terry.jpg (4618 bytes)Terry A. Johnson, loving husband and father, went to be with his Savior on August 10, 2004 at the age of 61. He was born in Ovid on August 1, 1943, the son of James and Emily (Nelson) Johnson. He was a retired maintenance person for Oldsmobile and a member of U.A.W. Local #652. Terry married Bonnie Hunt in St. Johns on March 21, 1964 and she survives him.

Also surviving are his sons, Kevin (wife Lori) Johnson and Terry (partner Kraig Shinabery) Johnson, daughter, Becky (husband Craig) Santrucek, grandchildren, Emily, Craig Jr., Alicia, Erica and Hayden Santrucek and Tiffany and Chase Johnson and brother, Jack Johnson. He was preceded in death by his mother, father, and brothers, Bob, Clyde and Charlie Johnson.

Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Friday, August 13, 2004 at the Houghton Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes, Ovid, burial at Middlebury Cemetery with Pastor Bob Magee officiating. Visitation will 10-8 P.M. Thursday with family present 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contribitions may be given to the family.

Vivian Lucille Lover

Lover.jpg (4255 bytes)Vivian Lucille Lover age 79 of Chapin Township, Michigan died Tuesday August 10, 2004at Sparrow Hospital, Lansing, Michigan.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 14, 2004 at 11:00 A.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel. Pastor John James, Pastor Glen Vibbert & Dr. George Somers will officiate with burial at Ford Cemetery, Gratiot County, Michigan. Visitation will be held Thursday, August 12, 4-8 P.M. & Friday, August 13, 2-8 P.M.

Vivian was born in Chapin Township, Michigan on August 15, 1924 the daughter of Orville & Edith ( Howard ) Criner. Vivian married Robert Eugene Lover on January 22, 1940 at United Brethren Church in Brady Township, MI. Robert died on September 6, 1980. She worked at Lear Corporation in Elsie, MI. Loved to garden and do yard work. She also enjoyed helping others. She was a member of Racy Free Methodist Church in Chapin Township, Michigan and the Fenmore Ladies Aid Society. She resided most of life: Chapin Township, Michigan.

She is survived by her son Gerald & Pat Lover of Adrian, MI, son Alton & Linda Lover of Durand, MI, son Ronald & Teri Lover of Elsie, MI, son Roger & Sandee Lover of Elsie, MI, 18 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, brother Lloyd & Norma Criner of Elsie, MI, sister Joyce & George Somers of Derby Lake, MI, sister Arlis Bishop of Matton, MI. She was predeceased by her parents, husband, and 2 daughters June & Diane Lover.


Memorials may be made to: Fenmore Ladies Aid Society or Racy Free Methodist Church. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel.
