Alvin J. "Fritz" Smith

Alvin J. "Fritz" Smith,  Westphalia, MI Age 65, passed away on Tuesday, August 24, 2004. He was born on July 6, 1939 in Westphalia, MI the son of Frank and Gertrude (Schrauben) Smith. Mr. Smith was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Westphalia and the Knights of Columbus St. Jude Thaddeus Council #2890. He was a lifetime dairy farmer and also worked part time for the Lansing State Journal. He enjoyed hunting, gambling and taking his companion "Duke" for a ride. He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers and 1 sister.

Surviving are his wife of 46 years, Karen; children, Alvin (Karen) Smith, Jr. of Westphalia, Colleen (Thomas) Pfister of Ann Arbor, Carol (Randy) Koenigsknecht of Farmington Hills, Arleen (Patrick) Platte of Westphalia and Dean (Candace) Smith of Portland; 10 granddaughters; brothers, Stanley (Shirley) Smith and Ronald (Sharon) Smith; sisters, Mary Ann (Clair) Schneider and Alice (Robert) Hafner; several nieces and nephews.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Cecilio Reyna, Pastor at 11 AM Friday, August 27, 2004 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Westphalia. Rite of Committal will follow in St. Mary Catholic Cemetery. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 7-9 PM both Wednesday and Thursday at the St. Mary Funeral Chapel, 210 N. Westphalia St., Westphalia. The Rosaries will be prayed at 3 and 8 PM both days. Arrangements are entrusted to the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, Portland, MI.

Gerald E. Halfman

halfman_gerald.jpg (4316 bytes)Gerald E. Halfman died August 23, 2004 at the age of 78. He was born at home in Fowler on October 10, 1925, the son of William and Helen (Long) Halfman. Gerald retired from Sealed Power (Dana Corporation) in 1988, enjoyed refurbishing and displaying old hit and miss engines, Harley Davidson motorcycles, fishing, hunting, gardening and farming. Gerald married Margaret Kohn in Hubbardston on May 6, 1950 and she preceded him in death on February 15, 1975.

Surviving are six sons, William (Shirley) of Pewamo, Richard (Terri), Kenneth (Sue) all of Fowler, Timothy (Mary Jo) of Carson City, David (Cindy) and Kevin (Brenda) all of Fowler, 21 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, twin sister, Geraldine (Leon) Hoppes of Portland, many nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his wife, Margaret, he was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Kay Foy and special friend, Doris Cooper.

Funeral Mass will be 10:30 A.M. Thursday, August 26, 2004 at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Ionia St. at Maple St., Fowler, with burial at Most Holy Trinity Cemetery. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 7-9 P.M. Tuesday and Wednesday at the Goerge Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes, 11112 W. Ionia St., Fowler, with a rosary prayed 3 and 8 P.M. Tuesday, 3 P.M. Wednesday and a vigil service 8 P.M. Wednesday.

Mary Rose Hope

Mary Rose Hope, infant daughter of Jody and Jamie (Hambleton) Hope died August 21, 2004. Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, August 25, 2004 at Mount Hope Church-Garden Chapel, Lansing, burial at 2 P.M. Mt. Rest Cemetery, St. Johns, with the Rev. Ricardo Torrez officiating. The family will receive friends from 10-11 A.M. at the church. Arrangements by the Osgood Funeral Home.

Harriet H. Halmo

halmo_harriet.jpg (5216 bytes)Harriet H. Halmo died August 19, 2004 at the age of 91. She was born on September 19, 1912 in Standish, Michigan, the daughter of Peter and Katherine (Ziobro) Szostak. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the St. Natalie Guild and owned/operated Harriet's Beauty Shop in St. Johns for 25 years. On February 8, 1941 she married Stephen Halmo and he preceded her in death on March 28, 1996.

Surviving are one daughter, Kathleen (George) Keedle of Madison Heights, one son, Robert Halmo of Waterford, two brothers Steve Szostak and Stanley Szostak, both of Chicago. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by five brothers, John, Tony & Mike Szostak and infant brothers, Mike and Joe Szostak, and six sisters, Annie Szostak, Katherine Krupa, Sophie Bartman, Helen Szostak, Sally Krupa and Marian Flynn.

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:00 A.M. Saturday, August 21, 2004 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, St. Johns, burial at Ford Cemetery, Elsie with Rev. Fr. Eoin Murphy officiating. The family will receive friends 5:00 – 7:00 on Friday, August 20, 2004 at the Osgood Funeral Home, 104 E. Cass St., St. Johns with a Prayer Service being prayed 7:00 P.M. Friday. Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
