Shirley A. Barrett Shirley A. Barrett died Sunday, August 29, 2004 at the age of 76. She was born January 15, 1928 in St. Johns the daughter of Reuben and Frances (Henning) Hall and lived all her life in St. Johns. Shirley was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Past President of the Altar Society and worked as a bookkeeper for many years. She married Maynard Barrett June 18, 1949 and he preceded her in death. Surviving are her children, Brenda (Douglas) Worrall, Rebecca

September 1, 2004 at St. Joseph Catholic Church 109 Linden, St. Johns with Rev. Fr. Eoin
Murphy officiating. The Rite of Committal will follow at Mt. Rest Cemetery, St. Johns. The
family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Monday and 9:00a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday
with a Rosary being prayed at 8:00p.m.at the Keck-Coleman Funeral Home

Fund. Gladys Cartwright age 88 of Ashley, Michigan died Saturday, August 28, 2004 at Ashley Care Center, Ashley, Michigan. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 1, 2004 at 11:00 A.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel. Pastor Wade Hall will officiate with burial at Ford Cemetery, Gratiot County, Michigan. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 31, 2004 3-8 P.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel. Gladys was born in Maple Rapids, Michigan on February 26, 1916 the daughter of Thad & Elva ( Richards ) Kidder. She graduated from Maple Rapids High School. Gladys married Francis Cartwright. He died May 7, 1982. She was a homemaker and she lived for her children. She attended Ashley Wesleyan Church and resided most of her
life in Maple Rapids and Ashley, Michigan. Memorials may be made toAshley Nursing Home, Ashley, Michigan. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel. Charles A. Stachel died Sunday, August 29, 2004 at the age of 73. He was born in Lansing, MI on September 28, 1930, the son of Walter Carl and Louise M. (Massuch) Stachel. Charles received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from MSU and was a retired Engineer with Federal Mogul. He was a member of the St. Johns Lutheran Church, choir member, usher and Past President of the Congregation. He also served his country in the US Army during the Korean War. Charles married Mary Margaret St. Pierre on June 14, 1952. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mary Margaret
Stachel of Lake City, five daughters, Ricki (Gary) Burk, Jeanne (Rick) Hudson, Lisa (Mick)
Lynch, Mary (Mike) Price, all of St. Johns and Carrie (Brent) Simon of Brighton, 12
grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. Chuck was the youngest of 7 and he is survived by
four sisters, Martha Whiting, Arlene J. Hummel, Bernice (Lee) Peterson & Marge (Dave)
Meerman and two brothers, Earl (Mo) Stachel and Walter (Lois) Stachel. In addition to his
parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers-in-law, Louis Hummel and Vic Whiting. Alice Ruth (Padgett) Hyde, 100, formerly of St. Johns, died Wednesday August 25, 2004. Services have been held. Arrangements by Osgood Funeral Home, St. Johns. Ruth Smalldon of St. Johns passed away Thursday, August 26, 2004 with her family at her bedside. She was born September 8, 1904 in Ovid, MI., the daughter of Sarah Agnes (Buck) and George Edward Smith. Ruth married John (Jack) Smalldon on November the 25th 1922 and he preceded her in death August 27, 1979. Surviving are her sons and daughters in law, Jack and Joan Smalldon and Harold and Janet Smalldon of St. Johns. Grandchildren, Karen (John) Paski, John (Karen) Burgess, Debbie Burgess, David Smalldon, Tammy Smalldon, Kathy (Chris) Fairchild, Kristine (Bill) Rickman, and William (Jill) Smalldon; nineteen Great Grandchildren, 8 Great Great Grandchildren, 2 sisters and 1 brother. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by son Harry Edward, daughter and son in law Fern and Wayne Burgess, grandson Michael Burgess, 3 brothers and 1 sister. Ruth was a caring and gentle soul who saw the best in what life had to offer her. She had the spirit of an angel and a smile for everyone who crossed her path. Ruth was hard working, a creative person with a keen sense of humor whatever her circumstances might be. Family was important to her and each of us will miss her. Goodbye Mom/Grandma and God speed. Funeral services will be Saturday, August 28, 2004 at 2:00 P.M. from Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Johns Chapel. Visitation will be Friday 2-8 P.M. with family present 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. Rev. Motz, age 92, of St. Johns, Michigan, passed away August 25, 2004. Born May 8, 1912 in a
log cabin near Bannister, Michigan, the son of Joseph and Jenny (Barcichi) Motz. He
married Ann (Anna) Michalek on July 18, 1936. He went to work in Flint for Buick in 1933.
In the 1940s he went to Oldsmobile in Lansing where he was a quality engineering
layout technician, retiring at the end of 1972 and also farmed. Joe was a radio DJ for
forty plus years beginning in St. Johns during the 1960s and 1970s then moving
to W.O.E.S. 91.3 FM at Ovid-Elsie High School in the 1980s. He was also known as
Polka Joe and was the oldest DJ in the state of Michigan. He was a member of
the ZCBJ Lodge in Bannister, enjoyed playing cards, traveling, Czechoslovakian music and
dancing. Joe and Ann covered most of the Michigan Polka festivals and many out-of-state
festivals in their younger days and spent winters in Zephyrhills, Florida for 25 years. Hubert Joy Vincent died
August 25, 2004 at the age of 81. He was born on April 10, 1923, the son of Floyd and
Augusta Vincent. He was a retired lineman for GTE, a member of V.F.W. Post #4113 and the
American Legion Post #153. |
