B. Stanley Pocuis

pocuis_bennie.jpg (4464 bytes)B. Stanley Pocuis died August 4, 2004 at the age of 90. Born in Chicago, Illinois August 14, 1913 the son of Bennie and Elbertina (Jakumas) Pocuis. He attended a rural one-room school in central Michigan through the eighth grade and graduated Salutatorian from Muir High School in 1932. He earned his B.S. Degree in Science and Mathematics along with a teaching certificate from Michigan State University in 1938. On June 15, 1940, he married Mildred Moldenhauer and she preceded him in death on October 6, 2002. In 1946, he earned a Masters Degree in Science and School Administration also from M.S.U. Credits were also earned towards a Doctorate Degree. He was a member of Sigma Pi Sigma-Honorary Physics Fraternity, Association of Retired School Personnel (local, state, and national levels), State and National School Science and Mathematics Association, State and National Association of High School Principals, State and National Association of School Administrators and life member of the National Exchange Club. He taught Science and Math at Johnsville High School in Jonesville, Michigan 1938-1940. He moved to St. Johns in 1940 and taught physics, chemistry, and math at Rodney B. Wilson High School and during war years, taught radio theory and aeronautics to pre-inductive students. In 1946, he became Principal of St. Johns High School, which he held for 23 years. In 1969, he became Superintendent of the Clinton County Intermediate School District. He retired from education in 1975. The Pocuis Auditorium at St. Johns High School is named in his honor.

He is survived by one daughter, Susan Kay Calva of Alhambra, CA, and one son, Dr. D. Leo Pocuis of Bremerton, WA, six grandchildren and five great grandchildren. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Lynne Pocuis.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place in Florida. Memorial Services will be held 11:30 A.M. Saturday, October 2, 2004 at the First United Methodist Church in St. Johns with cremains buried at North Plains Cemetery in Muir with Reverend Margery Schleicher officiating. Memorials may be made to St. Johns High School Scholarship Fund, 105 W. Sickles St., St. Johns, MI 48879.

Burton E. Tabor

tabor.jpg (4622 bytes)Burton E. Tabor age 90 of Elsie, Michigan died Sunday, September 12, 2004 at Clinton Memorial Hospital, St. Johns, Michigan.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, September 14, 2004 at 11:00 A.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel. Visitation will be held Monday, September 13, 2004 from 4-8 P.M. Rev. Diane Gordon will officiate with burial at Eureka Cemetery, Eureka, Michigan.

Burton was born in Elsie, Michigan on December 9, 1913 the son of Orin and Della ( Mead ) Tabor. Burton married Esther B. Henry in Duplain Township on September 27, 1936. Esther died August 25, 1996. He was a farmer, and a past member of Elsie Lions Club, Colony Sportsman Club, he was also a member of Farm Bureau and a past Duplain Township Constable. He resided most of his life in the Elsie area.

He is survived by 2 daughters Jill and Harry Huntoon of Elsie, MI, Rita Lewis and Larry Purvis of Elsie, MI 1 son Gale and Ele Tabor of Elsie, MI, 7 grandchildren and several great grandchildren, 1 sister Clara Grubaugh of Elsie, MI and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, 2 sisters Hazel Baxter and Fannie Bishop, brothers in law and special friends Loren Grubaugh and Ken Baxter, cousin Bill Kosier.

Memorials can be made to Cris Pointe Lighthouse or a Charity of the donor’s choice. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel.

Betty J. Stockwell

stockkwell_betty.jpg (4267 bytes)Betty J. Stockwell died Saturday, September 11, 2004 at the age of 78. She was born in Lansing, Michigan on April 6, 1926. She married Emerson Kenneth “Kenny” Stockwell, Sr. on September 15, 1945. Betty was a member of Lowe United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her husband of nearly 59 years, Emerson “Kenny” Stockwell of St. Johns, 4 children, Mattie (Jim) Schnepp, Emerson (Donna) Stockwell, Jr., Karen Stockwell, all of St. Johns and Danny (Jackie) Stockwell of Cement City, MI, 11 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and one brother, Ernie (Patty) Isenhower of St. Johns. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Dale and Martha Isenhower, one granddaughter, Angie Stockwell and 2 sisters, Goldie VanAlstine and Darlene Miller.

Funeral Services will be 1:30 P.M. Tuesday, September 14, 2004 at Osgood Funeral Home, burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery with Pastor Jim Dibbet officiating. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Lowe United Methodist Church.

Eleanor V. Thelen

Eleanor V. Thelen,  Westphalia, MI Age 90, passed away September 10, 2004. She was born on September 7, 1914 in Wayne Co., MI the daughter of Frank and Katherine (Fox) Smith. Mrs. Thelen was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Westphalia, and the Christian Mothers. She was active on the family farm with her husband, Alfred and enjoyed baking.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred in 1998; a brother, John Smith; a grandson, Gerald Thelen; and a granddaughter, Erica Thelen.

Surviving are her two daughters, Genevieve (Fred) Martin of Westphalia and Mary Ann (Bruno) Cook of Fowler; two sons, Roger (Bernice) Thelen of Fowler and Larry (Jeannette) of Westphalia; 19 grandchildren; 44 great grandchildren; 2 step great grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Cecilio Reyna, Pastor at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, September 15, 2004 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Westphalia. Rite of Committal will be in St. Mary Catholic Cemetery. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., both Monday and Tuesday at the St. Mary Funeral Chapel, 210 N. Westphalia St., Westphalia. The rosaries will be prayed at 3 and 8 p.m., both days. For those wishing, contributions may be made to the Fr. Al Miller Educational Trust Fund in memory of Mrs. Thelen. Reginald P. Rodgers

rogers_reg.jpg (4897 bytes)Reginald P. Rodgers, 51 died Sept. 7, 2004 at his residence. He was born Aug. 8, 1953 in Maiden North Carolina the son of Paul Q. and Virginia (Drum) Rodgers. Reginald graduated from Maiden N.C. High School and was manager of Krispy Kreme Donut Shop in E. Lansing.

Survivors inculde his Fiancé, Lori Fonger and her children, Matt Sneary, Rachel and Jason Fonger; two sons R. Heath Rodgers of West End, N.C. and Joshua Rodgers of Danville, N.C.; two daughters Jennifer Moretz of Virginia and Caribea Rodgers of Hawaii; and 3 grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, 1500 Waterford Pkwy, St. Johns on Monday, Sept. 13, 2004 6:00 P.M. until 9:00 P.M.

Anna R. Huhn

Anna R. Huhn,  (Lennemann) Pewamo, MI Born February 20, 1920, in Westphalia; died at home on September 8, 2004, surrounded by her loving family at the age of 84. Mrs. Huhn married Raymond L. Huhn on June 15, 1942 and they were married for 56 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband and companion (1998), granddaughter, Colleen Spitzley (1969), parents, Frank and Mary (Thelen) Lennemann; brothers, John, Leo, Herman, Louis and Francis Lennemann; sisters, Sr. Francella "Matilda" Lennemann, Martha Fox, Rosaline Schneider, Sr. Regina Lennemann, Odelia Feldpausch and Mary E. Smith; and several brothers and sisters-in-law.

Surviving are her daughters, Monica (Michael) Noeker of Lansing, Jeanette (Marvin) Spitzley of Pewamo, Diane (Roark) Tess of Lansing, Alice (Kenneth) Kramer of Pewamo, Mary (Christopher) Benson and Connie (Joel) Platte, both of Grand Ledge; sons, Robert (Marilyn) Huhn and Thomas (Carol) Huhn, both of Pewamo, Richard (Angie) Huhn of Clinton Township, Roy (Elaine) Huhn of Lyons and Carl (Janice) Huhn of DeWitt; 37 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Gerry Lennemann of Lansing; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, September 13, at Noon, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 106 East St., Pewamo, with the Rev. Charlon O. Mason, officiating. The Rite of Committal will be held in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Pewamo. The family will receive friends at St. Mary Chapel, 201 N. Westphalia St., Westphalia, on Friday from 7-9 PM and on Saturday and Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. The Rosary will be prayed on Friday at 8 PM, Saturday at 3 PM and on Sunday at 3 and 8 PM. The Scripture Service will be held on Saturday at 8 PM.

The family would like to thank Home Health Care companions, Juanita and Kathy, and Clinton Hospice Health Care personnel, Merna and Layne, for all of their loving care. Sharon C. Houghten

houghton_sharon.jpg (4565 bytes)Sharon C. Houghten passed away Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2004 at the age of 64. She was born October 13, 1939 in St. Johns, MI the daughter of Ulus and Grace (Myers) Rininger.

Sharon retired after working 31 years as a nurse’s assistant at Clinton Memorial Hospital.

Surviving are her children, Lisa Perkins and Mitchell Houghten; Grandchildren, Chad, Lindsey and Adam Perkins and Amanda Irish; sisters Reva Ernst, Dorothy Bancroft and Nelda Elmore; son-in-law Mark Irish and several nieces and nephews; lifelong friends Shirley Pifer, Sally Ralph and Norma Gorman and all of her wonderful friends at Clinton Memorial Hospital.

Sharon was preceded in death by daughter Tamara Irish, sister Phyllis McDiarmid and brothers Donald and Howard Rininger.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, Sept. 11, 2004 at 2:00 P.M. at Mt. Rest Cemetery, St. Johns, Rev. Hugh Banninga officiating. Randall A. Walter

Randall A. “Randy” Walter died Thursday, September 9, 2004 at the age of 55. He was born in St. Johns, Michigan on September 28, 1948, the son of Gerald L. and W. Jeanne (Baker) Walter. He lived in Ovid most of his life. Randy is survived by one brother, Robert Walter of Mason, one sister, Leanne (Thomas) Walling of St. Johns and many cousins.

The family will receive friends on Friday 6:00-8:00 P.M. and on Monday 9:30-10:30 AM at the Houghton Chapel of Osgood Funeral Homes, 232 E. Oak St. in Ovid. Graveside Services will be held 11:00 A.M. Monday, September 13, 2004 at Maple Grove Cemetery in Ovid with Rev. Rob McPherson officiating.

Memorials may be made to Ovid Healthcare Center.

Henry O. Skopek

skopek_henry.jpg (4372 bytes)Henry Skopek died September 7, 2004 at the age of 88. Born in Ashley, Michigan on January 23, 1916, the son of Frank and Antonia (Kostal) Skopek. He worked in the dry cleaning business for several years in Lansing and later co-owned and operated the H and H Lounge in St. Johns for many years before retiring to Florida for 20+ years. Henry married Cecelia Pewoski on July 15, 1941. Henry and Cecelia were members of the Perry Beagle Club and loved polka, dancing and bingo.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Cecelia Skopek, one sister, Amelia Reed of Arizona, many nieces, nephews and friends. Many thanks to John, Connie and Amber with Angel’s Adult Foster Care Home in Charlotte.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated 10:00 A.M. Saturday, September 18, 2004 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, St. Johns, with Rev. Fr. Eoin Murphy officiating. The family will receive friends a half hour prior to the Mass at the church. In leau of flowers, memorials may be made to Alzheimer’s Association or American Cancer Society.
