Cecil L. Smith Cecil L. Smith passed away Tuesday, September 21, 2004 at the age of 74, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born December 14, 1929 in Hubbardston, MI the son of Herman and Matilda (Snyder) Smith. Cecil worked for General Motors as a machine repairman for 31 years, retiring at age 50. After retirement from GM he was a self-employed carpenter for 15 years and also worked for Conley Real Estate. He served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean War, was a member of American Legion Post #153, VFW Post #4113, and the Clinton-Gratiot Voiture 868 of the 40/et8. Cecil was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #3850, UAW Local # 652, A.A.R.P. and was a former member of the St. Johns Zoning Board of Appeals. He married H. Joan Fedewa on May 29, 1954. Surviving are his wife of 50 years Joan, two sons, Lee (Dori) Smith, Eric (Stephanie) Smith, two daughters, Ann (Charles) Green, and Cheryl Lowe all of St. Johns, 11 grandchildren, two sisters, Elaine Hunter and Carol Duguay, both of St. Johns. He was preceded in death by his parents, one son Mark, one brother Clifford and three sisters, Marcia Bradley, Alma Joseph and Carmen Stump. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 24, 2004 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 109 Linden, with Msgr. Robert Lunsford and Rev. Fr. Eoin Murphy as con-celebrants. Interment will follow at Mt. Rest Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at the Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, 1500 Waterford Parkway, St. Johns with a Rosary being prayed at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. Surviving are one son, Robert (Helen) Schultheiss of Traverse City, one daughter, Mary Ruth (Carl) Beutler of Weidman, seven grandchildren, Douglas Schultheiss, Gerald (Linda) Schultheiss, Kenneth (Malaporn) Schultheiss, Judith (Randy) Stone, Diane (Donald, Jr.) Budd, William (Paula) Beutler and Brenda (William) VonLinsowe, fourteen great grandchildren, Jeremiah, Hannah and Jacob Budd, Luke and Emily Shepard, Katy and Tara VonLinsowe, Kristin, Clay and Kyle Beutler, David, Patrick and Brandon Schultheiss and Craig Stone, one sister-in-law, Genevieve Wolfe of Alma, and several nieces & nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Gerald & Kenneth Wolfe, one sister, Ruth Wolfe, one daughter-in-law, Delene Schultheiss. Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Thursday, September 23, 2004 at the Osgood Funeral Home with Pastor Merlin Pratt officiating. A luncheon will immediately follow the funeral service at Pilgrim United Methodist Church. Burial will be at Oak Grove Cemetery in St. Louis at 2:00 P.M. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home. Sympathy may be expressed in the form of memorials to Pilgrim United Methodist Church, the Clinton County Senior Citizen Center, or to the charity of donor's choice. Perry E. Pat Nethaway age 79 of Elsie died Friday, September 17, 2004. He was an Alzheimer resident of the Ovid Healthcare Center for over 8 years, where he enjoyed good times with other residents, and was tended to by qualified and loving caregivers. Funeral services will be Tuesday, September 21, 2004 at 11:00 A.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel. Visitation will be Sunday 6-8 P.M. and Monday 2-8 P.M. with family present 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. Pastor Eric Stanton will officiate and burial will take place in Fairfield Township Cemetery, Fairfield Township, Michigan. Pat was born February 13, 1925 the son of Grover & Joanetta ( Thompson) Nethaway on the farm where he resided until entering Ovid Healthcare Center. He was married to Frances Romesburg on June 5, 1948 in Burton, Michigan. Pat retired from Johnson Controls in Owosso in 1987 after 34 ½ years of service. He was Past Master & Life member of Ovid Masonic Lodge. He attended Carland Zion Brethren In Christ Church. He loved farming and deer hunting in Trout Creek, Michigan. Survivors include his wife, Frances Nethaway of Elsie, Michigan, 1 daughter Dr. Gwyn & Ron Koris of Virginia, 1 son Ron & Anna Nethaway of Elsie, 7 grandchildren, Sharada Nethaway of Illinois, R.J. & Doug Nethaway of Indiana, Jerod & Tyler Nethaway of California, Mike Nethaway & Katie Leland of Ovid, MI. 5 sisters Dora & Jim Dumond of Henderson, Anna Hartwick of Virginia, Leila & Wes Nelson of California, Marie Nethaway of California, Helen Mindiola of Lansing, 3 brothers, Charles & Pauline Nethaway of Ovid, MI, Tom & Barbara Nethaway of Chapin, MI, Chris & Dixie Nethaway of Ovid, MI. Many nieces & nephews. He was predeceased by His parents, a son Dennis in 1991.

Charlie was born in Bannister, Michigan on August 9, 1924 the son of Barney & Mary (Malek) Cerny. He attended Bannister Public School. Charles married Mary Ladiski on February 1, 1947 in Bannister, Michigan. He retired from Federal Mogul in St. Johns in 1986. He was a resident of Pompeii, Michigan before moving to Elsie in 1964. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Ovid, Michigan and ZCBJ # 225 in Bannister, Charlie enjoyed doing yard work and planting flowers. He is survived by his wife Mary Cerny of Elsie, MI, 2 daughters Jane & Doug McCallister of Ovid, MI, Vicki & Bill Riggan of Ovid, MI, 2 sons Tom Cerny of Elsie, MI, Dave & Tawny Cerny of Laingsburg, MI, 10 grandchildren Scott Cerny & special friend Rachel Thrush, Heather & Dave Arthur, Angie & Brian Kemppainen, Cari & Josh Chadwick, Matt McCallister & special friend Elaine DuBridge, Nick Riggan, Mark McCallister, Ben Riggan, Jenna Cerny, Alex Cerny, great grandson Adam Arthur, his dog Buffy, 6 sisters; Pauline, Irene, Wilma, Ella, Gladys, Mildred, 2 brothers; John & Jim, and many sister & brother in laws. Scott was born in Lansing, Michigan on May 21, 1962 the son of Paul Ross & Barbara Jean ( Langkamp ) Heeney. He graduated from Laingsburg High School with the class of 1980. He was employed at C & D Hughes Construction in Potterville. Scott resided most of his life in Elsie, Michigan He is survived by his 4 children, Brianna, Ryan, Dylan & Shaila Heeney of Elsie, MI, parents Paul & Barb Heeney of St. Johns, MI, 2 brothers Paul Heeney of Owosso, MI, Jeff Heeney of Ovid, MI, & 2 Nephews Jeffrey & Justin Heeney of Ovid, MI. Memorial Services will be held on Saturday, September 25, 2004 at1:00 P.M.at United Church of Ovid. Pastor Rob McPherson will officiate. Robert was born in Ovid, Michigan on September 28, 1922 the son of Russell & Edith ( Jorae ) Chaffee. He graduated from Ovid High School with the class of 1940. He also attended Ford Technical Institute in Dearborn, MI for 2 years. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard during WWII in the Pacific. Robert married Esther Larkins in Lansing, Michigan on March 4, 1950. He retired from Michigan Milk Products in Ovid in 1987. He volunteered at Memorial Healthcare in Owosso. Robert enjoyed fishing and he was devoted to his family and friends. He resided most of his life in Ovid, Michigan and was a member of the Masonic Lodge in St. Johns, MI. He is survived by his wife Esther Chaffee of Ovid, MI, 3 daughters Deborah & Steven Leonard of Rose City, MI, JoEllen & Gregory Crips of Grandville, MI, Mary Ann Minarik of St. Johns, MI, 6 grandchildren; Amber, Amy, Katie, Robby, Aaron & Marie 2 great grandchildren; Jacob & Nathan and 1 sister Elizabeth & Gilbert Franklin of FL.
