Rev. Howard A. Simpson,  Jr., 80, Army Air Corps World War II veteran, ordained episcopal minister, died Saturday November 20, 2004. Memorial services will be held at a later date. Arrangements by Gorsline-Runciman Lansing Chapel.

John E. "Eddie" Bauer

John E. "Eddie" Bauer, Portland, MI Age 79, passed away on Monday, November 22, 2004. He was born on May 14, 1925 in Portland. MI son of George and Katherine (Bates) Bauer. THE FISHERMAN'S PRAYER..."I pray that I may live to fish until my dying day, and when it comes to my last cast, I then most humbly pray...when in the Lord's great landing net and peacefully asleep...that in His mercy I'll be judged...big enough to keep." Mr. Bauer was a veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and also a life time member of the Portland V.F.W. Post #4090, as well as the Conservation Club. Eddie was also a member of St. Patrick's Catholic in Portland. He worked at T.R.W. in Portland for 35 years before retiring in 1983, he was a baseball legend in Portland, being instrumental in the building of the Bud Plant field. Eddie enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and building bird houses for family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Georgia Wright; brother, Jack Bauer.

Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Freda Bauer of Portland; children, Neil (Lori) Bauer of Portland, Carl (Andrea) Bauer of Portland, Nancy Ingram of Grand Rapids, Cathy (Keith) Gilliver of Dimondale, Jane (Steve) Bell of Lansing, Dave (Special friend Beverly) Bauer of Portland and Patricia (Mark) Martens of St. Johns; grandchildren, Lisa (Courtney) Hill, Joseph, Alison and Alivia Bauer, and Linsey and Ashley (Chris) Ingram-Kliewer, David and Julie Bell, John, Anson and Zachary Martens; great-granddaughter Madeliene Hill; 1 great-grandson on the way; sisters, Barbara (Gilbert) Hutchings of Orlando, FL and Betty (Lee) Lockwood of Treasure Island, FL; sister-in-law, Edith Bauer of Tacoma, WA.

The Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 28, 2004 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Portland, with the Rev. Larry King, Pastor presiding. Rite of Committal will follow at Portland Cemetery, with Military Graveside Honors provided by the Portland V.F.W. Post #4090. The family will receive friends at the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, Portland from 6-8 p.m. memorial contributions may be made to the Fr. Flohe Foundation or to Heartland Heathcare, in memory of Mr. John E. "Eddie" Bauer.

Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, November 24, 2004 at 11:00 A.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel. Rev. Merlin Pratt will officiate with burial at Duplain Township Cemetery, Duplain Township, MI. Visitation will be held on Monday 6-8 P.M. Tuesday 2-8 P.M. with family present 2-4 & 6-8 P.M.

Cereta was born in St. Johns, Michigan on April 22, 1915 the daughter of William & Daisy ( Meese ) DeVries. She resided most of her life in the Clinton County Area. She graduated from St. Johns High School. Ceteta was a homemaker & former Bus Driver for Ovid-Elsie Public Schools, she loved to garden & picking & canning fruit, she also enjoyed sewing. She was a member of Elsie United Methodist Church and a past member of the Colony Extension Club.

She is survived by her daughter Lora Halstead of Rochester Colony, MI, 3 sons Marlynn Thornton of Elsie, MI, Rolland & Ruth Thornton of Elsie, MI, Keith & Patsy Thornton of Sturgis, MI, step son Rodney & Mary Kiger of Elsie, MI, step daughter Mary & Ken Mitz of Kalamazoo, MI, 16 grandchildren, several great grandchildren, 1 great great grandson. She is predeceased by her parents, her first husband, Earl Thornton, her second husband Kenneth Kiger, and 1 brother George DeVries.

Memorials may be made to a Charity of the donor’s choice in her memory. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel.

Gerald A. Smith

Smith_Gerald.jpg (3994 bytes)Gerald A. Smith, loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and brother died Saturday, November 20, 2004 at the age of 79. He was born in Clinton County, Michigan on September 29, 1925, the son of Herbert and Gertrude (Fox) Smith and lived in Clinton County most of his life. He was retired from farming and Fisher Body and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and the Ushers Club. Gerald married Alice Schaefer in Lansing, Michigan on May 14, 1949.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Alice Smith of St. Johns, six children, Teresa Ann (Larry) Freed of St. Johns, Dennis (Sue) Smith of Bath, Denice (Brad) Smith-Astalos of DeWitt, Susan (James) Shepard of Fayetteville, North Carolina, Donald (Debra) Smith of Ft. Wayne, IN and David Smith of Casnovia, Michigan, eight grandchildren, Shari (Todd) Snyder, Alyssa (Robb) Slocombe, Laura (Douglas) Berg, Alayne (Rob) Ferrall, Mike Smith, Angie Smith, Melanie Smith & James Shepard, four great grandchildren, Elisabeth Snyder, Christiana Snyder, Baby Slocombe & Baby Berg, two sisters, Ilene (James) Weber of Ada and Virginia Lake of Saranac, one brother, Raymond Smith of Lansing and one sister-in-law, Jeanne Smith of Lansing. He was preceded in death by a brother, Norman Smith and a sister, Rosemary Falor.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, November 23, 2004 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery with Rev. Fr. Kenneth MacDonald officiating. The family will receive friends Sunday 6:00-8:00 PM and Monday 2:00-4:00 & 6:00-8:00 P.M. at the Osgood Funeral Home, 104 E. Cass Street, with a K of C Rosary prayed at 8:00 P.M. Sunday and a Vigil Service at 8:00 P.M. Monday.  Memorials may be made to Moffit Cancer Clinic for research in Tampa, Florida.

Lesley Daman Fedewa

Born April 17, 1955 in Lansing, MI to Fred "Fritz" and Marguerite Daman, Lesley married Gerard Fedewa on September 24, 1988 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Pewamo. She was a member of St. Joseph's, the Altar Society, the singing trio "Polyester Blend", MSU Music Sorority, and the Society for Creative Anachronisms. Her lovely singing touched many lives and she will be greatly missed. Lesley was preceded in death by her father, Fred "Fritz" Daman, brother, Glenn Daman, father-in-law, Walter Fedewa, and brother-in-law, Donald Fedewa.

She is survived by her husband, Gerard; son, Orry Fedewa; mother, Marguerite Daman of Grand Ledge, brother, Bruce (Melanie) Daman and their son Devon of Grand Ledge; mother-in-law, Bernita Fedewa of Pewamo; brother-in-law, John Fedewa, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. Lesley will be sadly missed by her special friends, Beth Webb and Pat Trommater who sang with her in the trio, "Polyester Blend", her vocal students, and many friends.

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:00 AM Wednesday, November 24, 2004 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 126 East Street, Pewamo with the Reverend Father Charlon Mason officiating. Interment will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday and Tuesday from 2:00 - 4:00 and 7:00 - 9:00 P.M. at the Goerge Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Home, 11112 W. Ionia, Fowler with Rosaries prayed 3:00 and 8:00 P.M. Monday, 3:00 P.M. Tuesday and a vigil service at 8:00 P.M. Tuesday. Sympathy may be expressed in the form of memorials to the St. Joseph Educational Trust Fund or to the family. The family would like to send a special thanks to Hospice House of Mid-Michigan.

Frederick P. Orson

Orson_Fred.jpg (4925 bytes)Frederick P. Orson, age of 81, died November 17, 2004 and was dearly loved by his family. He was born in Newark, New Jersey on May 21, 1923 the son of Rozalia (Jancik) and Benedict Orson and lived most of his life in St. Johns. He was a veteran of World War II serving as a heavy mortar crewman and also in chemical warfare in Normany, Northern France and Central Europe. He was a member of V.F.W. Post #4113 and the 81st Chemical Mortar Battalion Association and retired from the State of Michigan, Department of Management and Budget after 40 years of service as a Parking Officer. Fred loved the outdoors, hunting and fishing. He enjoyed yardwork, especially gardening and flowers, was a talented artist and was always a kid at heart. Fred married Doris M. Smith at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Westphalia on June 21, 1952 and she survives him.

Also surviving are three daughters, Kathleen Orson of St. Johns, Marie (Roy, Jr.) Westendorff of Lawrence, MI, and Anita Olney of Fowler, one son Carl (Vicki) Orson of St. Johns, nine grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and two sisters Mary J. Wilckens of Phillipsburg, New Jersey and Stephanie Kowalski of Belleville, New Jersey plus many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three brothers Ben, John, and Charles.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:30 A.M. Saturday, November 20, 2004 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 109 Linden, St. Johns, burial in Mt. Rest Cemetery with Rev. Fr. Eoin Murphy officiating. The family will receive friends 6-8 P.M. Thursday and 2-4 and 6-9 P.M. Friday at the Osgood Funeral Home, 104 E. Cass St., St. Johns. A Rosary will be prayed 3:00 P.M. Friday and a Vigil Service will be prayed 7:30 P.M. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Hospice for Clinton County or the American Heart Association. Military graveside services provided by St. Johns Honor Guard.

steffen.jpg (4612 bytes)John F. Steffen age 70 of St. Johns, Michigan died Monday, November 15, 2004 at Hazel I. Findlay Country Manor, St. Johns, Michigan.

Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, November 18, 2004 at 11:00 A.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Johns Chapel. Burial will be held at South Bingham Cemetery, Bingham Township, Michigan. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 17, 2004 from 4-8 P.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Johns Chapel.

John was born in Rockford, Michigan on February 11, 1934 the son of George Frederick and Wilma Edna ( Wells ) Steffen. He graduated from Rockford High School with the class of 1952. He then attended Western University where he graduated with an Accounting Degree. He resided most of his life in Rockford, Michigan before moving to St. Johns, MI in 1973. He owned and operated a convenience store on M-52 in Owosso. He was also an accountant for several businesses in the area. John proudly served in the U.S. Army. He loved to fish and go camping.

He is survived by 3 daughters; Greta & John Burdsal of Texas, Andrea & Norman Smith of South Carolina, Georgia Steffen of Owosso, MI, 1 son; Charles & Carolyn Steffen of Pennsylvania, 5 grandchildren; Becky, Andrew, Jake, James, & Joey, 1 sister; Phyllis Cummings of Belding, MI, special nephew Wes Cummings of Belding, MI, and his children’s mother Ann Bowers of Owosso, MI. He was predeceased by his parents, and 1 brother-in-law Wayne Cummings.
