Neil Douglas Van Epps

Neil Douglas Van Epps,  Wacousta, MI Mr. Van Epps, age 69, passed away December 19, 2004 at his residence. He was born April 22, 1935 at Lansing, the son of Clifford E. and Bessie Slider Van Epps. He was a member of the St. David's Episcopal Church; retired in 1992 as a Senior Designer in the Powertrain Group, Oldsmobile Division, GM. He served in the US Navy from 1954 to 1957 where he served as an electronics technician on the minesweepers: USS Energy, USS Guide and USS Toucan.

Mr. Van Epps graduated from Rodney B. Wilson High School in St. Johns in 1953, attended Long Beach (California) State College and Michigan State University.

Survivors include his wife, Myrna A.; sons, Michael E. (Lexis) Van Epps of St. Joseph, MI, Mark (Cynthia) Van Epps of Grand Ledge, Joel (Tammy) Van Epps of Portland; 3 grandsons; 5 granddaughters; 3 step-grandchildren; 1 great-granddaughter; brother, William G. (Frances) Van Epps of Dansville; 2 sisters, Eloise Falor and LaRene (Rowlan) Smith, all of St. Johns; many nieces, nephews and other relatives; treasured friends and neighbors. Predeceased by his parents, daughter, Marcia and brother, Duane.

Memorial Services will be held Wednesday, December 22, 2004, 11:00 a.m. at St. David's Episcopal Church, 1519 Elmwood Road, Lansing with the Rev. David Pike officiating. Interment will be at the Lowe Cemetery, Essex Twp., Clinton Co., MI. The family will receive friends at St. David's Episcopal Church Tuesday, 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. For those desiring contributions to the Ingham Visiting Nurse Hospice or charity of your choice would be appreciated. The family is being served by the Peters & Murray Funeral Home, Grand Ledge.

Patricia A. Smith

Patricia A. Smith,  Westphalia, MI Age 58, passed away on Monday, December 20, 2004. She was born on August 26, 1946 in Charlotte, MI, the daughter of Robert and Beverly (Rogers) Dies. Mrs. Smith was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Westphalia. Patricia enjoyed knitting, crocheting, sewing and loved her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Roger Dies.

Surviving are her husband, Roger J. Smith of Westphalia; children, Joe (Debra) Smith of St. Johns, Douglas (Katie) Smith of Fowler and Brad (Jacklyn) Smith of Fowler; grandchildren, Mara Smith, Brett Smith, Logan Smith and Paige Smith; sisters, Susan Johnson of Hastings and Lorraine (Jim) Dean of Ionia; brother, Tom (Twana) Dies of Portland; several nieces and nephews.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Cecilio Reyna, Pastor at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, December 23, 2004 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Westphalia. Rite of Committal will follow at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery, Westphalia. The family will receive friends at the St. Mary Funeral Chapel from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday. Rosaries will be prayed at 8 p.m. Tuesday and 3 p.m. Wednesday. A Scriptural Wake Service will be held at 8 p.m. Wednesday. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to the Fr. Al Miller Trust Fund in memory of Mrs. Patricia A. Smith. Arrangements are entrusted to the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, Portland.

John H. Bashore

Bashore_John.jpg (4054 bytes)John H. Bashore was born October 14, 1922 near St. Johns, one of eight children of John and Louise (Wassa) Bashore. He attended school in the St. Johns area and became especially active in baseball at a young age, as a catcher on an American Legion team in his teens and later on community teams in Ovid and St. Johns for many years.

Mr. Bashore was a member of the 33rd infantry, U.S. Army from 1942-1945, rising to the rank of staff sergeant, participating in the island hopping campaign of New Guinea as well as the campaigns for Morotai Island and Baguio City, the Philippines. He later participated in the allied occupation of Japan from September to December, 1945 in Kyoto.

Mr. Bashore was wounded in action on April 7, 1945 in the allied campaign for Baguio, the Philippines, for which he was awarded a Purple Heart.   Back home, Mr. Bashore attended classes atGM Tech in Flint and was employed as a foreman at REO in Lansing, before beginning a 30-year career at Federal-Mogul Corporation in St. Johns in the standards and pricing departments, from which he retired in 1985. Mr. Bashore founded Ovid Boy Scout Troop 585 in 1963 and served as its Scoutmaster for a decade. He later served as a driver/medic for the Ovid Volunteer Ambulance. He became a canny student of the stock market and was an active Investor most of his adult life. He also loved watching things grow and was an enthusiastic yardman and gardener whose battle cry was "crabgrass Never sleeps."

He married Elaine a. Miller of Fowler on September 2, 1950 in Angola, Indiana. She was his loving and devoted companion until his death.

He is survived by his wife and two children, Mark, of Okemos and Steph, of Midland, and two grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters, Margaret (McKay) of Dewitt, Betty (Blank) of Evart and one brother, Larry, of Ovid.

Mr. Bashore determined many years ago to will his body to the MSU School of Medicine. He will be lovingly remembered for his pragmatism, his sense of Humor, his desire to do the right thing and for his vigorous sense of Independence.

The family will receive friends at an informal memorial luncheon Tuesday, December 28 at noon at the United Church, W. Front Street, Ovid. Memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society. Arrangements by Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, St. Johns, MI 989-224-4422

Marjorie Biddinger

Biddinger_Marjorie.jpg (4389 bytes)Majorie Jean (Duflo) Biddinger died December 18, 2004 at the age of 91. She was born in Middleton, Michigan on July 30, 1913 , the daughter of Alvin and Bertha Duflo and lived most of her life in Middleton and St. Johns. Marjorie married Clayton Biddinger on November 7, 1931 and he preceded her in death on September 3, 2001.

She is survived by one daughter, Kathleen ( Michael) Verlinde of St. Johns, two sons, Gary Biddinger of St. Johns, and Richard (Alice) Biddinger of Caro, MI, nine grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, one great great grandson, one sister Eunice Plank.The family will receive friends from 6-9 P.M., Tuesday at the funeral home.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 22, 2004 at 3:00 P.M. at The Osgood Funeral Home, burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery with Pastor Bob Ditmer Officiating.

Faye M. Henderson

Born September 23, 1921, the daughter of Avery B. & Bertha (Bensinger) Squiers; Faye lived most of her life in Shiawassee and Clinton Counties. She was a member of Shepardsville United Methodist Church, the Library Club and the Women's Society of Christian Services and a retired inspector from Federal Mogul with 27 1/2 years of service. Faye married Robert Henderson on April 11, 1941. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, grandson, Michael Henderson, three brothers; Avery, Dale, and Max Squiers and one sister, Wilda Hibbard.

She is a survived by two sons; Dennis Henderson of St. Johns and Richard (Bette) Henderson of Okemos, five grandchildren; Chris, Jonathon, Elizabeth, Chad and Laurie Henderson and 3 great grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, December 21, 2004 at the Houghton Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes, 232 E. Oak Street, Ovid with the Reverend Kay Pratt officiating. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery, Ovid. The family will receive visitors Monday 4:00 – 7:00 PM. Sympathy may be expressed in the form of memorials to Shepardsville United Methodist Church in memory of Faye.

Frances S. Bolter

Frances S. Bolter died December 14, 2004 at the age of 86. She was born in Owosso on August 20, 1918, the daughter of Frank and Anna (Kirby) Serr. She was a cook at the Wheel Inn, Clinton County Sheriff Department and the former Dry Dock and was a former employee in Owosso. Frances married Ellis Bolter in 1940 and he preceded her in death on 1981.

Surviving are her children, Carlyle “Butch” (Elisabeth) Bolter of Chesaning, Sandra (Richard Sr.) Taylor and Richard (Kaelyn) Bolter, all of Elsie, five grandchildren, Charles Bolter of Chesaning, Richard (Sallie) Taylor, Jr., Diana Taylor (Karen Carter), all of Ovid, Deborah (Brent) Brya of Elsie and Scott Taylor of St. Johns, six great grandchildren, Matthew Shank, Bradley Shank, Mark Latchaw, Jr., Alexander Brya, Lukas Brya and Jacob Taylor, sister, Phyllis (Duane) Dumond of Corunna and brother, Don Serr of Owosso. In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by her daughter, Cathy Bolter (12/31/1966), brother, Jim (Alberta) Serr and sister-in-law, Mary Serr.

Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Friday, December 17, 2004 at the Houghton Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Home, 232 E. Oak St., Ovid, burial at Hillcrest Cemetery with Pastor Rick Alcaraz officiating. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home.
