Mary Gene Rivest

Rivest_mary.jpg (4398 bytes)Mary Gene Rivest, 77, died Wednesday Jan. 12, 2005 at Ovid Healthcare Center, She was born on Sept. 10, 1927 in Lansing, Mi the daughter of James & Mary (Roddy) O’Toole. Mary Gene graduated from Ovid High School in 1944 and was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church. On Feb. 23, 1946 she married Frank C. Rivest in Owosso, MI. He preceded her in death May 6, 2002 as did infant son Gary Lee, an infant Daughter, and son-in-law Louie Rodriguez.

Surviving are sons, James & Diane of Lewiston, MI, Michael & Kathy of Metamora, MI, Thomas of British Columbia, Patrick & Carol of Yorktown, IN, and Kevin & Mary Jo of Findley, OH; daughers Judy & Bill Kissane of St. Johns, Yvonne & Jim Mosley of Lansing, MI, Kay Butler of Grosse Pointe, MI and Karen & Mark Egres of Ashley, MI; sisters Rose & William Kuykendall of Arkansas, Geraldine & Don Chandler of Oregon and Louise O’Toole of Corunna; 26 grandchildren and 10 great- grandchildren.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Family Catholic Church on Saturday, Jan. 15, 2005 at 11:00 A.M.  with Rev. Fr. Raymond Urbanek officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery, Elsie, MI The family will receive friends Thursday, 6-8 P.M. and Friday, 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, 1500 Waterford Parkway, St. Johns, 989-224-4422. Rosary service will be at 7:00 P.M. Friday. Memorial contributions may be made to Holy Family Catholic Church or Ovid Public Library.

Julius “Eggie” Ambrose

Ambrose_Julius.jpg (9528 bytes)Julius “Eggie” Ambrose, age of 84, passed away January 11, 2005 at Saint Mary’s Hospital in Saginaw. Born in Grand Rapids December 17, 1920, the son of Stanley and Anna (Sauka) Ambrose. He was a World War II veteran, owner of Walker Cleaners in Grand Rapids before moving to Maple Rapids in 1971 and becoming the owner of the Hide-A-Way Inn until 1981.

Surviving are his wife, Eleanor, two stepchildren, Tom (Deb) Klasko of Grandville and Sharyn Cecchini of Maple Rapids, daughter, Danette (Greg) Rueckert of Laingsburg, five grandchildren, five great grandchildren, half brother, Jerry Ambrose of Grand Rapids, several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Friday, January 14, 2005 at the Abbott Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes, 509 E. Main St., Maple Rapids with burial at Payne Cemetery. Military graveside services provided by St. Johns Honor Guard. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home. Contributions can be made to the American Diabetes Association or the American Heart Association.

Helen M. Gazda

Gazda_Helen.jpg (4821 bytes)Helen M. Gazda died Sunday, January 09, 2005 at the age of 81. She was born September 8, 1923 in Ashley, Michigan the daughter of John and Bertha (Augustine) Ujlaky. Helen farmed with her husband on their mint farm in Wisconsin. They lived in St. Johns before moving to Owosso in 1989. She looked forward to receiving and going through The Antique Trader and was very strong in her heritage, along with a love for Czechoslovakian music. Helen married Frank J. Gazda on February 9, 1946 and he preceded her in death on June 27, 1990.

She is survived by her daughter, Monica Balderson of Lansing, three sons, Frank (Rita) Gazda of Ovid, Robert Gazda of Shelby Township and Jerry (Marlene) Gazda of Arlington, Texas, 11 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Helen is also survived by her sister, Rosie Schomisch of St. Johns, sister-in-law, Mary Ujlaky of Owosso, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Helen was preceded in death by two brothers, Emil and Richard Ujlaky.

Funeral Services will be 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, January 12, 2005 at the Osgood Funeral Home, 104 E. Cass, St. Johns, burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery with Pastor Larry Smith officiating. The family will receive friends 6-8 P.M. Monday and 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. Tuesday at the funeral home. Sympathy may be expressed in the form of memorials to Hospice House of Mid-Michigan or Sparrow Foundation-Palliative Care, P.O. Box 30480, Lansing, MI 48909.

Donald B. Howard

Donald B. Howard, 84 died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005 at Ovid Healthcare Center. Don was born July 2, 1920 in Muir MI. the son of Harry & Florence Burtraw Howard. He graduated from Muir High School and was a retired accountant. He was an avid stamp collector, piano player and enjoyed reading.

He is survived by sister Mrs. Barb Beck of St. Johns, Mrs. Marie McPherson of Florida; brother, Gordon & Jean Howard of St. Johns and several nieces and nephews.

There will be no visitation and memorial services will be held at Salem United Methodist Church, Saturday, January 22, 2005 at 11:00 A.M. with Pastor Jim Dibbett officiating. Cremation has taken place. Memorial contributions may be made to Salem U.M. Church or the Charity of the Donor’s Choice. The family is being served by Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, St. Johns 989-224-4422

Benjamin E. Hall

Benjamin E. Hall,  Okemos, MI Born April 27, 1941, in St. Johns, MI; died January 7, 2005, at the age of 63. Mr. Hall was retired from Kinawa Middle School in Okemos and was a founding member of St. Martha Parish.

Surviving are his wife, Bethany of 43 years; daughter, Anne Hall of Haslett; sons, Timothy (Ali) Hall of Gardena, CA, Jeffrey (Miki) Hall of San Jose, CA; grandchildren, Alexander and Nadia Hall; brother, Charles (Faye) Hall of AL; sister, Marie (Charles) Bernard of MN and several nieces and nephews.

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, January 12, 2005, at 11 AM at St. Martha Parish, 1100 W. Grand River, Okemos, with the Rev. Jonathan Wehrle officiating. The Rite of Committal will be held in Glendale Cemetery, Okemos, MI. The family will receive friends at Gorsline-Runciman Co., East Chapel, 1730 E. Grand River Ave., East Lansing, on Tuesday, from 2-4 and 6-8 with a scripture service at 7 PM. Those desiring may make contributions to the St. Vincent DePaul Society of St. Martha Parish, c/o The Church, and Habitat for Humanity (For Fix Up), 1137 Haco Dr., Lansing, MI 48912, in memory of Mr. Hall.

Dean LeRoy Kadolph

Dean LeRoy Kadolph,  40, of Grand Rapids, formerly of Elsie, Waste Management (Grand Rapids) maintenance supervisor, died Wednesday of natural causes. Services 11 a.m. Monday at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel.

Levi Ivan Reed

Levi Ivan Reed,  DeWitt Township, MI Levi Ivan Reed has gone on to a better place where there is no pain and he will be strong and able. A place where there will be many things that need repairing, rebuilding or figuring out, large gardens to tend, plenty of deer to hunt, fish to catch and morels to pick.

Ivan graduated from Custer High School in 1937. He married Alta Catherine Mallison on April 18, 1941. Ivan served in the United States Army in WW II, European theater and was awarded the Bronze Star for heroic actions at the Battle of the Bulge. He worked at Motor Wheel, was part owner of Reed Excavating and many people will remember Ivan as the owner operator of Reeds Standard Service for over 25 years at the corner of US 27 and State Rd. in DeWitt Township.

He leaves behind his loving wife of 63 years, Alta Catherine Reed and his legacy, 6 children, Donald (Lacinda) of DeWitt, William (Kathryn Maureen) of Lansing, Robert (Sharon) of Eaton Rapids, Linda Hodges (Lee) of Vassar, Patrick (Lisa) of Grand Ledge, Micheal (friend Jerry Towery) Sarasota, FL; 22 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will he held at 2 PM on Saturday, January 8 at the Gorsline-Runciman DeWitt Chapel, 111 S. Franklin, DeWitt with Pastor Thomas Truby officiating. The family will receive friends at the Chapel on Friday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM. Those desiring may make contributions to the Gunnisonville United Methodist Church, Bath, Michigan.
