Zelma A. Washburn Walker

walker_zelma.jpg (4552 bytes)Zelma A. Washburn Walker died January 17, 2005 at the age of 102. She was born in Ashton, MI on September 26, 1902, the daughter of Alonzo and Abigale (Hunt) Pratt. Zelma was a housemother for the Michigan School for the Blind, a member of Elsie United Methodist Church, and was active with the Senior Citizen Centers in St. Johns and Slidell, LA. Her marriage of 40 years to George Washburn ended with his death in 1960. Her second husband, Freeman Treachler died in 1969 and third husband, Edgar Walker in 1995.

Surviving are three children, J.D. (Nellie) Washburn of Elsie, Vivian (George) Huntington of Slidell, LA and Elwin (Dorothy) Washburn of Winter Garden, FL, 16 grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren, and 10 great great grandchildren. In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by five sons, George II, Ivan, Edwin, Floyd and Dale Washburn, two sisters, Victoria and Ines Pratt, and six brothers, Luther, Bratton, Elkins, Charles, Robert and Ernest Pratt.

Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Friday, January 21, 2005 at the Osgood Funeral Home, St. Johns, burial at Dimondale Cemetery with the Rev. Jayme Kendall and the Rev. Fred Fischer officiating. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home. Sympathy may be expressed in the form of memorials to the Colony School Historical Society.

Robert L. Andrews

Robert L. Andrews, Birch Run, Michigan. Age 65, died Friday, January 7, 2005 at his residence. Robert was born March 13, 1939 in Saginaw, Michigan to Charles and Mary (Brandle) Andrews. He had resided in Birch Run all of his life. Robert graduated from Birch Run High School in 1957. He was a member of the U.S. Army Reserves. In 1964 Robert married Loxi Hoskins in Birch Run. Of that union was born Michael and Lisa. In 1975 he married Barbara Stains and of that union was born James and Erin. Robert owned and operated Andrews Barber Shop in Birch Run for over 40 years. He was a member of Frankenmuth Conservation Club, the Birch Run Moose Lodge, Lions Club and was a former member of the Birch Run village council. Robert was very active in the Birch Run community. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and flying as a private pilot.

Surviving are wife, Barbara; four children, Michael Andrews, DRE at St. Joseph Church in St. Johns; Lisa Andrews of Ann Arbor; James Andrews of Texas; and Erin Andrews of Birch Run; mother, Mary Andrews of Saginaw; brother, Russell and wife, Tamra Andrews of Vassar; sister, Rosemary and husband, George Firmingham of Saginaw; sister-in-law, Shirley Andrews of Birch Run; several nieces and nephews. Robert was preceded in death by his father, Charles and brother, Roy.

A memorial service was held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 12, 2005 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Birch Run. Donald D. Stevens

stevens_donald.jpg (4373 bytes)Donald D. Stevens passed away Friday, January 14, 2005 at the age of 84. He was born in Lansing on Feb. 18, 1920 the son of Wayne and Ellen (Cedar) Stevens, and has lived in St. Johns since 1944. Don was a WWII Army veteran and a retired Motor Wheel employee. He was married to Wauneta Stewart, and she preceded him in death.

Surviving are two daughters, Marsha  and Darlene Stevens both of St. Johns; step-son, Steven (Pat) Eckert of Lakeview; grandchildren,   Steven and Kimberly Eckert; brother, Richard (Lila) Stevens of Clarksville, MI; sisters-in-law,  Peggy and Winifred Stewart both of Maple Rapids and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral  services will be 1:00 p.m. Monday, January 17, 2005 at the Keck-Coleman Funeral Home (989/224-4422) with Pastor Paul Daniels officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Rest  Cemetery with military graveside honors provided by the St. Johns Honor Guard. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Max L. Thornton

Thornton_Max.jpg (4853 bytes)Max L. Thornton died January 11, 2005, at the age of 62. He was born in Ovid on January 8, 1943, the son of Norman and Elizabeth Thornton. He was a former press operator for Federal Mogul and U.S. Army veteran. Max married Andrea Hubbert in Ovid on May 19, 1973 and she survives him.

Also surviving are his children, Christopher Thornton, Gene Thornton and Bonnie (Jerry) Ashbaugh, all of St. Johns, three grandchildren, Kodi Thornton, Brittney Ashbaugh and Rebecca Ashbaugh and one sister, Grace Yerrick of Vermontville. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Francis, Cleon, Ivan, Irvan, Harvey and Russell.

Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M. Friday, January 14, 2005 at the Osgood Funeral Home, 104 E. Cass St., St. Johns, burial at Fort Custer National Cemetery with the Rev. Hugh Banninga officiating. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home. Military honors provided by Elsie American Legion. Sympathy may be expressed in the form of memorials to the Elsie American Legion Post or Clinton County Senior Citizens Drop-In Center.
