Donald E. Penix Donald E. Penix, 85 died Monday evening, January 31, 2005 at the MidMichigan
Medical Center in Midland. He was a resident in Midland for the past year, and prior to
that resided in Pentwater. He was born June 27, 1919, son of the late Milo and Grace
(Corwin) Penix in St. Johns where he was raised and educated. Don married Josephine Butler
in 1941. He served with the United States Navy during World War II in the Asiatic-Pacific
Theatre. He began his career as a printer at the Clinton County News, and then worked for
many years at The Lansing State Journal, retiring in 1979. They spent their retirement
years living in Pentwater. Josephine died in 1988, and Don moved to Midland in 2004. He
was a member of the First Baptist Church in St. Johns, then joined the First Baptist
Church in Pentwater. He recently joined the St Johns Lutheran Church in Midland.
He is survived by his children, David Penix of Lansing,
Bill (Alinda) Penix of Ortonville, Mary Jo (John) Eldridge of Mason, Barbara
(William) Eldridge of Midland; brother Raymond Penix of Battle Creek and nine
grandchildren.
Funeral services will take place at 1:00 pm, Friday, February 4, 2005 at the
Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Chapel, 1200 W. Wheeler Street, with Rev. Douglas Janetzke of
St. John's Lutheran Church officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday
from 11:00 am until time of services. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked

Gregory Allen Mills
Gregory Allen Mills, age 48, of Ashley, died Sunday,
January 30, 2005 at Carson City Hospital after a long struggle with terminal illness. He
was born September 3, 1956 to William Carl Mills, Sr. and Arnetia Johan (Huss) Mills in
St. Johns. Gregory spent all of his adolescent and teenage years in the rural area of
Sumner. His adult years were spent traveling from place to place until his return home in
1998 where he then resided with his mother in a small house built by his father near
Pompeii.
He is survived by his mother, Arnetia, three brothers, William Carl Mills, Jr. (Karen) of
Alma, Jay S. Mills (Anita) of Bannister and Wayne J. Mills, Sr. of Crystal and a sister,
Cristy of Sumner, seven nephews, two nieces, nine great nephews, six great nieces and many
aunts, uncles and cousins. His father and oldest sister, Cindra, predeceased him.
Having created his own arrangements prior to his passing, there will be no funeral
services. His body will be cremated, his ashes laid to rest and a family gathering made in
his honor at a later date. The family was served by the Osgood Funeral Home, St. Johns.
Edward R.
Ed Barks
Edward R. Ed Barks died January 27, 2005, at
the age of 63. He was born in South Bend, Indiana on November 17, 1941, the son of
Clarence Isaac and Ada Ella (Sult) Barks. He was a farmer, retired General Motors
employee, member of U.A.W. Local #502 and Mt. Hope Church in Lansing. Ed married Kay
Rathbun in St. Johns on September 2, 1961 and she survives him.
Also surviving are his sons, Jon (Trudi) Barks of St. Johns and Joshua Lemmer of DeWitt,
daughter, Jillian Lemmer of DeWitt, grandson, Jonothon Barks of St. Johns, brother,
Clarence T. (Betty) Barks of DeWitt and sisters, Edna (Gene) Thompson and Alice Knox, both
of Winter Haven, Florida. He was preceded in death by his sister, Dora Moffett.
Memorial services are pending. Sympathy may be expressed in the form of memorials to the

Willard
Willy Klatt
Willard Willy Klatt died January 26, 2005 at the age of 52. Born in St. Johns
on April 11, 1952, the son of Adolph and Dorothy (Zoellner) Klatt. He was a graduate of
Ovid-Elsie High School and worked at Canadian National Railroad for over 25 years. Willy
enjoyed NASCAR-especially #24, was an avid snowmobiler, former avid motocross racer-now
fan, enjoyed feeding his birds and lived to hunt until NASCAR season started.
He is survived by two brothers, Leonard (Elaine) Klatt of Ovid and John (Terry) Klatt of
Brant, one sister, Mary Brooks of Charlotte, his best buddy-his dog Bart and many loved
nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Gloria
Wrigglesworth.
Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M. Saturday, January 29, 2005 at the Houghton Chapel of
the Osgood Funeral Homes, burial at South Ovid Cemetery with Pastor Larry Smith
officiating. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Friday and 9-1 Saturday at
the funeral home. Sympathy may be expressed in the form of memorials to the National Rifle
Association.
Cory Dale
Cumberworth
Cory Dale Cumberworth, Perrinton, MI Age 16, of
Perrinton passed away January 25, 2005 at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing as a result of an
automobile accident. Cory was born October 24, 1988 in Alma the son of Gary and Linda
(Andrews) Cumberworth. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, cooking, water and snow skiing,
listening to music and spending time with his friends and family.
Cory is survived by his mother, Linda Cumberworth of
Perrinton and his father, Gary (Carol) Cumberworth of Perrinton; sister, Chassity
(Shannon) Glinke of Sunfield; brother, Craig Cumberworth of Perrinton; step-brother,
Ronnie Carmen of Pompeii; step-sisters, Julie (Tobey) Trejo of Alma and April (Wes) Harlow
of Pompeii. Also his grandparents, Sam (Marilyn) Andrews of Perrinton, Dale (Ruby)
Cumberworth of Perrinton and a nephew, Seth Glinke of Sunfield.
Funeral services will be held Friday, January 28, 2005 at
11 a.m. at Lux and Schnepp Funeral Home, Carson City with Rev. Ried Martin and Rev. Bill
Foldesi officiating. Interment will be in Fulton Center Cemetery. Visitation will be held
Wednesday from 7-9 p.m. and Thursday from 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. at Lux and Schnepp Funeral
Home, Carson City. Memorial contributions in honor of Cory may be made to Fulton High
School Weight Room. Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Dodge Funeral Home,
Middleton.
Margaret
E. Marge Hurst
Born December 1, 1935 in Harrietta, Michigan, the
daughter of Alvin and Beryl (Payne) Moore, she died January 27, 2005. She was a member of
St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Ladies Altar Society. Marge volunteered at Clinton
Memorial Hospital for many years and was a member of the puppet group. She also
volunteered with the American Red Cross. She was a member of the Womens Bowling
Association, was league secretary for 24 years, and an active bowler for more than 38
years. She married Paul Hurst on May 19, 1956 and he survives her.
Also surviving are her five children, Mark (Gail) Hurst of California, Laura (Steve)
Becker of Pennsylvania, David (Felice) Hurst of St. Johns, Robert Hurst of St. Johns, and
Luanne (Andrew) Nelson of Mt. Pleasant, and twelve grandchildren. Marge also has two
sisters, Connie Kinney of St. Johns and Dorothy (Robert) Ohnek of Remus, three brothers,
William Moore and Richard Moore of Arizona and Jack (Joann) Moore of New Mexico. She was
preceded in death by two brothers, Melvin and David Moore.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11:00 A.M. Monday, January 31, 2005 at St. Joseph Catholic
Church, burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery with Rev. Fr. Ken McDonald officiating. The family
will receive friends 2-4 & 7-9 P.M. Saturday and Sunday at the Osgood Funeral Home
with a rosary being prayed at 8 P.M. Sunday. Memorials may be made to Hazel Findlay
Country Manor.
James Joseph Kanthe
James Joseph Kanthe died January 23,
2005, at the age of 96. He was born in Benton Township, MI on August 9, 1908, the son of
Otto and Stephanie (Savage) Kanthe. He was the owner/operator of Kanthe Peat Farms in Ovid
and retired owner of Kanthe Excavating in Livonia. James married Marion Kremski in Angola,
Indiana on June 27, 1932 and she preceded him in death on January 6, 1993.
Surviving is his son, Thomas (Linda) Kanthe of Pinckney, grandson, Thomas Jr. (Candice)
Kanthe, granddaughter, Tammy Kanthe and four great grandchildren, Gavin, Codi, Thomas and
Clint Kanthe. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, son, Frank
Kanthe and grandson, Steve Kanthe.
Funeral services will be 1:00 PM Thursday, January 27, 2005 at the Houghton Chapel of the
Osgood Funeral Homes, 232 E. Oak St., Ovid, burial at Middlebury Cemetery with the Rev.
Bonnie Wood officiating. The family will receive friends 6-8 P.M. Tuesday and 2-4 and 6-8
P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home. Sympathy may be expressed in the form of memorials to

Harold R. Green
Harold R. Green, 87 formerly
of Sanford and Ovid, died at Northwood Meadows in Cass City,
Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2005. He was born on July 6, 1917 in Fenton, MI. He came to live on the
Green farm near St. Johns at the age of six when he was adopted by Mark and Elsie Green.
He
spent all of his childhood on the same farm and married Doris Euler on Dec. 9, 1939 in
Laingsburg. She preceded him in death on Sept. 15, 2002. Harold and Doris both graduated
from Laingsburg High School in 1936 and continued a life of farming. Eventually he took
his
family to Chesaning where he sold farm equipment, and then moved to Ovid where he was the
State Farm Insurance agent for that territory. He was a member of the Ovid Lions Club, and
served many years on the Ovid School Board. It was during this tenure as president that
Ovid
and Elsie merged and built the facility that now houses the Ovid-Elsie Marauders. He
believed
very strongly that we should support our local business people, and did so in everything
from
hardware to groceries.
Harold is survived by two daughters, Mary (Lanny) Waite of
Midland and Ardis (Douglas)
Monroe of Gagetown. Also there are three grandsons, Marc (Jennifer) of Granger, IN., Matt
(Jennifer) of Windsor, England and Ryan of Chicago, IL. and two stepdaughters, Darlene
(John)
Borowski of Holly and Darcie (Ryan) White of Bettendorf, Iowa. There are four wonderful
great
grandchildren, Ashley, Trevor, Olivia, and Grace Waite. Three beautiful
step-granddaughters,
Emma, Mary Margaret, and Sally Borowski. He is preceded in death by his parents and one
step
grandson, Darin Monroe.
Funeral services will be on Sunday, Jan. 30, 2005, 2:00
P.M. at United Church of Ovid
with Rev. Rob McPherson officiating. The family will receive friends at Keck-Coleman
Funeral Home, 989-224-4422, Saturday from 2:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. and Sunday 1:00
