St. Johns. Catherine Anna Counseller age 82 of St. Johns, Michigan died Sunday, March 20, 2005 at her home. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, March 24, 2005 at 1:00 P.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Johns Chapel. Pastor Merlin Pratt will officiate with burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery, St. Johns, Michigan. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 23, 2005 from 4-8 P.M. Catherine was born in Custer, Michigan on August 11, 1922 the daughter of William & Camilla ( Adams ) Conklin. She resided most of her life in St. Johns, Michigan. Catherine married Vern B. Counseller in Lowell, Michigan. He died in 1959. She retired from GM. Catherine enjoyed dancing and traveled in her early years. Catherine is survived by 2 sisters; Genevieve & Richard Slatter of Clarksville, MI, Ruth & Keith Nicholas of St. Johns, MI, 2 sons; Vern Counseller of Silver Lake, MI, Marvin Counseller of Florida, 10 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and nieces & nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, husband, 1 son Floyd LeRoy Colley, 1 granddaughter Christine & 2 brothers Maynard & Levi Conklin. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Johns Chapel. Hoyt D. DeGroot, 64, of Auburn Hills MI died March 16, 2005. He graduated from Michigan State University in 1963 and worked for Union Carbide for 35 years. Hoyt was an avid golfer. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Christine (Lancaster), daughter Kelly (Greg)Crawford, grandchildren Casey and Christopher, his brother Bill (Sherry) DeGroot, nine nieces and nephews and 1 great-nephew. Funeral services were held Saturday March 19, 2005 at the Modetz Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Cranbrook Hospice. Staff Sgt. Ricky Allan Kieffer, Ovid, MI Staff Sergeant Ricky Allan Kieffer, U.S. Army, died March 15, 2005, while serving his Country in Iraq, at the age of 36. He was born in Lansing on November 21, 1968, the son of Howard and Barbara (Young) Kieffer, Sr. Ricky was employed at the Combined Support Maintenance Shop (CSMS), a member of the Michigan National Guard, a 1986 graduate of Ovid-Elsie High School and a member of the American Legion Post #502 in Elsie. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, a humanitarian to all, a fantastic mechanic and loved to buy Christmas presents. Ricky married Patricia Newell in St. Johns on November 4, 1988. He was a loving husband to Patti and loving father to Dustin and Kira Kieffer. Also surviving are his parents, Howard Sr. and Barbara Kieffer of Ovid; brother, Howard Kieffer, Jr. of Ovid; and mother-in-law, Beverly Newell of Owosso. Funeral Services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 24, 2005 at Grove Bible Church, 6980 E. Price Road (Corner of Price and Shepardsville Roads) St. Johns with Pastor Larry Smith officiating. Interment will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery with body-bearers and Military Graveside Services provided by Fort Knox. The family will receive friends at the Houghton Chapel of Osgood Funeral Homes, 232 E. Oak Street, Ovid, Tuesday and Wednesday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sympathy may be expressed in the form of memorials to the Children's Educational Trust Fund in memory of Ricky. Ella Jane Cooper John W. Cockrum Bob first moved to the St. Johns area in1958 shortly after taking a position as a sales representative with the Rockwell Manufacturing Co. In 1969 he was promoted to District Sales Manager, which entailed a transfer to Naperville, IL. He returned with his family to St. Johns in 1981. Bob had a great sense of humor, a trait which served him well as he traveled the entire state of Michigan during his years as a water meter/ products salesman. He had many stories about his exploits in the field of sales, and was happy to tell them to anyone who would listen (even if they had heard that particular story before). He was admired greatly by his family for the loyalty and devotion he showed to his wife during her six years in the nursing home here in St. Johns. Surviving is one daughter Roberta (Peter) Motz; one son John (Leslie) Salemi; four grandchildren Anna and Taylor Motz and Alex and Libby Salemi all of St. Johns. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 23, 2005 at St. Joseph Catholic Church 109 Linden, St. Johns with Rev. Fr. Eoin Murphy as celebrant. Rite of Committal will follow at Mt. Rest Cemetery with military honors provided by the St. Johns Honor Guard. The family will receive friends 2-4 & 6-8 pm Tuesday at the Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, St. Johns (989) 224-4422. A rosary will be prayed by the Knights of Columbus, 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Fedewa, Portland, MI Age 90, passed away on Friday, March 18, 2005. She was born on June 26, 1914 in Westphalia the daughter of Peter and Julia (Martin) Smith. Mrs. Fedewa was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Isadore. Surviving are her daughters, Barbara (Richard) Pung Trierweiler, Patricia Fedewa, Joyce (Ron) Shepler, Diane (Daryl) Simon; son, Dennis (Pam) Fedewa; 12 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren. Dorothy and Isadore lived on their farm for 61 years, she was a homemaker who enjoyed quilting. She dearly loved her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, March 22, 2005 at St. Patricks Catholic Church, Portland with Rev. Larry King, presiding. Rite of Committal will be in Portland Cemetery. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Sunday and Monday at the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, 210 E. Bridge St., Portland. The Rosaries will be prayed 3 and 8 p.m. Sunday and 3 p.m. Monday. A Scriptural Wake Service will be held at 8 p.m., Monday. Memorial contributions may be to the Fr. Flohe Fund. Richard D. Shorty Gould age 70 of Elsie, MI died Friday, March 18, 2005 at his home. Funeral Services will be held on Monday, March 21, 2005 at 11:00 A.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel. Pastor Dan Cameron will officiate. Visitation will be held on Sunday, March 20, 2005 from 2-8 P.M. with family present 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. Richard was born in Sumner, Michigan on August 30, 1934 the son of William C. & Nettie ( Scott ) Gould. He resided most of his life in the Coopersville area before moving to Elsie 24 years ago. He graduated from Bath High School, Bath, Michigan. Richard married Rita Millen on September 16, 1967 at St. Lukes in Nunica, MI. He retired from Motor Wheel Corporation in 1996. He also drove a truck for Liquid Fertilizer and Jim McClelland Trucking. He enjoyed ice fishing, gardening and watching hummingbirds. He is survived by his wife Rita Gould of Elsie, MI, 3 daughters; Teresa Terry Lischer of New York, Sandra & Dan Fleischer of St. Johns, MI, Rhonda Gould of Grand Rapids, MI, 2 sons; Richard & Nina Gould of California, Dallas & Sandra (Olivia) Gould of Muskegon, MI, 11 grandchildren, 2 brothers ; Mike & Barbara Gould of Grand Rapids, MI, Fred & Saralyn Gould of New York, 2 sisters Betty & Bob Bartlett of Oklahoma, Marlene Lane of Florida.
