Larry Ackels

ackles_larry.jpg (4522 bytes)Larry Ackels age 66 of Ashley, Michigan died Wednesday, March 30, 2005 at Ingham Regional Medical Center, Lansing, Michigan.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, April 2, 2005 at 1:30 P.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Ithaca Chapel. Burial will take place at North Star Cemetery, North Star, Michigan. Visitation will be held on Friday, April 1, 2005 from 2-4 & 6-8 P.M.

Larry was born in Ashley, Michigan on April 1, 1938 the son of Henry & Carrie ( Schaub ) Ackels. He was a lifelong resident of Ashley, Michigan. He graduated from Ashley High School with the class of 1957. Larry married Andrea Foglesong in Ithaca, Michigan in October of 1971. He retired from General Motors in 1994 after 34 years of service; he was also a farmer. He loved auction sales, horses, and he enjoyed spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife Andrea Ackels of Ashley, MI, 1 brother Harold & Rhoda Ackels of Howell, MI, 3 sisters; Marjorie & Carl Robbennolt of Ashley, MI, Betty Sadler of Ashley, MI, Katherine Powelson of Elsie, MI, many nieces & nephews, his pet dog Pistol and exchange student daughter Ulrika Cederberg of Sweden. He was predeceased by his parents, 2 brothers Walter & Robert Ackels, & sister Helen Powelson.

Memorials may be made to the Gratiot Area Hospice or Diabetes Association. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, Ithaca Chapel.

Patricia Louise Kramer Hine Cox

cox_patricia.jpg (4392 bytes)Patricia Louise Kramer Hine Cox, 53 died suddenly on March 29, 2005. Patricia was born March 12, 1952 in St. Johns MI the daughter of Burton Keene and Josephine Louise Miller Kramer. On January 27, 1996 she married Richard Cox in Negril, Jamaica and he survives her.

She graduated in 1970 from St. Johns High School. She worked in medical records at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, MI and had also worked at cablevision in St. Johns. Pat had owned Pathways Bookstore in Quincy. She loved to garden and loved her pets.

Survivors include her Mother and Step Father, Josephine and Garrett Gruner of St. Johns, MI, a son Brandon Hine of Lansing, MI, a granddaughter, Alexis Nicole Hine of Havana, IL, 2 brothers, Russell & Diane Kramer of Weidman, MI and Jeffrey and Rebecca Kramer of St. Johns. 4 nephews, 1 great nephew and many aunts, uncles and cousins. She was preceded in death by her Father, son Spencer Hine, her grandparents, Mary Miller Buehler and Joseph Miller also Iva and Cecil Cramer.

A Vigil service will be held Friday evening at 7:30 P.M.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 2, 2005 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in St. Johns with Rev. Fr. Eoin Murphy officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Rest Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, 989-224-4422, on Friday, April 1, 2005 from 2-4 & 6-8 P.M.Memorials may be given to the Capital Region Humane Society or the Charity of the Donor’ Choice.

Earl J. Michaud

Earl J. Michaud, age 85, passed away Monday, March 28, 2005. He was born in Wallagrass, Maine on December 30, 1919, the son of Joe and Phoebe (Lafferere) Michaud. Earl retired from Lindell Drop Forge after 28 years of service. He married Ruth Dye in 1950 and she preceded him in death in 1969.

He is survived by his second wife, Helen (Suchek) Pewoski whom he married January 30, 1970, his grandchildren Jon Pewoski, Cindy Pewoski and Kristen White, and his greatgrandchildren Michael, Nathan and Madison. In addition to his wife, Ruth, he was preceded in death by his sons, Stanley and Larry Pewoski, nine brothers and two sisters.

According to Earl’s wishes, he will be cremated and there will be a Memorial Service at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, April 1, 2005 at the Osgood Funeral Home, 104 E. Cass St., Saint Johns with Pastor Kay Pratt officiating. Military honors provided by the Saint Johns Honor Guard. Sympathy may be expressed in the form of memorial contributions to the American Heart Association.

Leonore M. Howe

Leonore M. Howe,  Grand Ledge, MI Age 85, passed away March 27, 2005 in St. Johns, MI. She was a life-long area resident, member of St. Michael Altar Society, St. Cecelia Guild, and North Eagle Cemetery Society.

She is survived by daughters, Joyce Schafer-Davis of Mt. Pleasant and Karen (Larry) Simon of Aurora, IL; son, Roger (Sandy) Howe of Eagle; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and brother, Celestine Simon of Dimondale. She was preceded in death by husband, Byron and four brothers.

Visitation will be Thursday 2-4, 6-8 p.m. at Holihan-Atkin Funeral Home, Grand Ledge, vigil, 7:30 p.m. Funeral Mass will be Friday, April 1, 2005, 11:00 a.m. at St. Michael Catholic Church, Rev. Fr. James Eisele, Celebrant. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. Contributions in memory of Leonore may be made to St. Michael Church.

Dorothy E. (Keilen) Bower

Dorothy E. (Keilen) Bower,  Grand Ledge, MI After enjoying a long and fruitful life, Dorothy E. (Keilen) Bower died peacefully at her home in Grand Ledge on March 26, 2005 at the age of 97. Dorothy was born December 23, 1907, the second eldest of eleven children in Westphalia, MI. Dorothy attended Lansing Business University and worked in Lansing prior to her marriage to John Bower on July 8, 1933. Together they raised seven children which might well have earned them both eternal peace.

Preceding her in death are her husband, John; a daughter, Marilyn; a granddaughter, Mary Jo; her parents, Joseph and Mary (Fedewa) Keilen; three brothers, Walter, Robert, and Fr. Ernest Keilen, SVD; and three sisters, Verena Huggett, Mildred LaRowe, and Sister Francis Keilen, SCC.

Dorothy is survived by two daughters, Jane and Carol of Lansing; four sons, Jack (Marie) of Bath, Dick (Mary) of Mattawan, Jerry (Mary) of Laingsburg, and Bob (Carolyn) of DeWitt; 18 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; a sister, Anita Fitzpatrick; and three brothers, Vincent, Herbert, and Francis Keilen. During her final days when she could hardly speak, Mom always expressed real gratitude to anyone who did any small thing for her.

Visitation will be at Holihan-Atkin Funeral Home in Grand Ledge, Tuesday, 1-3 and 6-8 p.m. with a Vigil at 7:30 p.m. The Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at St. Gerard Church, where Dorothy was a Charter Member, on Wednesday, March 30, 2005 with Fr. John Klein as celebrant. Contributions may be made to the Giving Tree Farm or the charity of your choice in Dorothy's name.

Frederick Denovich

Mass of Christian Burial will be at St. Cyril's Catholic Church, Bannister, Michigan on Thursday, March 31, 2005 at 10:30 A.M. Burial will take place at Ford Cemetery, Elsie, Michigan.

Rev. Fr. Wolfgang Streichardt will officiate and visitation will be Tuesday, March 29, 2005 from 6-8 P.M. & Wednesday, March 30, 2005 from 2-8 P.M. with family present 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Johns Chapel. Rosary will be prayed on Wednesday evening at 6:00 P.M. at the funeral home.

Fred was born in Elsie, Michigan on August 28, 1929 the son of George & Mary ( Moyer ) Demjanovich, he graduated from Elsie High School with the class of 1948 and resided most of his life in St. Johns, Michigan. On January 20, 1951 he married Betty Jane Rozen at St. Cyril's Catholic Church, in Bannister, Michigan. He worked for Federal Mogul, sold real estate, and was a machinist for MSU – he helped build the cyclotron. Fred also served his country in the U.S. Army. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in St. Johns, Michigan, and the Knights of Columbus in St. Johns.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Jane Denovich of St. Johns, Michigan, 3 daughters, Christina & Mike Kleuckling of Atlanta, Georgia, Theresa & Eric Matteo of Okemos, Michigan, Angie & Herb Daumann of Dewitt, Michigan, 2 sons Frederick “Jerry” & Jenny Denovich of Lansing, Michigan, Lynn & Debra Denovich of St. Johns, Michigan, 7 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren, 1 sister, Margaret Osborn of Ashley, Michigan. He was predeceased by his parents, 5 sisters, & 5 brothers. Memorials may be made to MSU Floral Gardens or Hazel Findley Country Manor.

M. Stuart “Stu” Sillman

He was born November 11, 1926 in Lebanon Township, Clinton County, MI the son of Charles and Angie (Allen) Sillman. He was an active member of St. Peter Lutheran Church where he was involved in many church groups, was an avid bowler, hunter and fisherman, a member of Teamsters Local #580, was a farmer and former George Worthington Co. employee. Stu married Lois Witt on August 25, 1948 and she survives him.

Also surviving is one son, Richard (Jan Conley) Sillman of Pewamo; two daughters, Diana (Wayne) Woodbury and Laurie (Randy) Pollock all of St. Johns; 10 grandchildren, Aaron (Michelle) Woodbury of St. Johns, Jason (Amy) Woodbury of Columbia SC, Martin Woodbury and Angela Woodbury, Scott Sillman, Ricky (Sara) Sillman all of St. Johns, Katrina Sillman of Ionia, Rachel Chant of Davie, FL, Jamie and Lacy Pollock both of St. Johns; 9 great grandchildren; one sister, Nellie Nobis of Fowler; four brothers Orville of Blissfield, Keith (Marge) of New Era, Evart (Bernita) of DeWitt, Vern of Mason; three sisters-in-law Kay Sillman of Fowler, Lorina Sillman and Gladys Johnston both of St. Johns; one brother-in-law Lester Sehlke of St. Johns; and many nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death was one son Charles, four brothers, Elden, Bruce, Barry and Clarence; two sisters, Catherine Sehlke and Imogene Sillman.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 31, 2005 at St. Peter Lutheran Church 8990 Church Rd. St. Johns, with Pastor Jeffrey Heimsoth officiating. Interment will follow at St. Peter Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Tuesday and 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, (989) 224-4422. Leo Feldpausch

Feldpausch_leo.jpg (4727 bytes)Leo Feldpausch, age 85, passed away on Sunday, March 27, 2005 after a courageous battle against pre-leukemia. He was born on October 24, 1919 in Fowler, the son of Joseph a nd Regina (Wieber) Feldpausch. He was a member of St. Martin de Porres parish in Perrinton and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was preceded in death by his parents, loving wife, Virginia; daughter, Geraldine Irrer; son, Gary; great-grandson, Peyton Lee Moore; 3 brothers, Sylvester, Harold, and Louis.

Surviving are 4 daughters: Jane (Jim) Nurenberg, Diane (Fred) Piper, Donna (Paul) Hufnagel, Sandy Thelen; 4 sons: Ray (Karen), Steve (Eileen), Patrick (Linda), Lee (Linda); daughter-in-law, Penny Feldpausch; 38 grandchildren and 42 great-grandchildren; 3 sisters: Ottilia Sohn, Julia Martin, and Sr. Corrine; 2 brothers: Roman and Jim.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:00 A.M. Thursday, March 31, 2005 at St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church, 4010 W. Cleveland Rd. (M-57 at Luce Rd.) in Perrinton, with the Rev. Fr. Julius Spleet, the Rev. Fr. William Koenigsknecht and the Rev. Fr. Leon Martin concelebrating and Sister Margo Tafoya assisting. Interment will follow in Most Holy Trinity Cemetery in Fowler. The family will receive visitors 2-4 and 7-9 P.M. Tuesday and Wednesday at the Goerge Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes, 11112 W. Ionia St., Fowler with a Rosary at 3 P.M. both days and a Scripture Service 8 P.M. both nights. Sympathy may be expressed in the form of memorial contributions to Maryknoll Missionary Sisters for the poor and the American Cancer Society in memory of Leo Feldpausch.

Jerome M. Schafer

Jerome M. Schafer died March 24, 2005 at the age of 85. Born December 10, 1919 in Westphalia, Michigan the son of Joseph and Mary (Goerge) Schafer. He was retired from Fowler Plumbing and Heating and was a member of Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Usher and a member of the V.F.W. having served in WWII. He married Mary Klein September 27, 1951 and she preceded him in death on November 1, 2002.

Surviving are one son, Steve (Ann) Schafer of Fowler, one daughter, Beth Schafer of Lansing, four grandchildren, Katherine (Jeffrey) James of Hillsdale, Jennifer (Brian) Thelen of St. Johns, Steven and Joan Schafer, and four great grandchildren, Harrison, Hayden and Hannah James and Alex Thelen. Jerome is also survived by two sisters, Erma Thelen and Catherine Mueller, both of Lansing, two brothers, Raymond (Betty) Schafer of Westphalia and Art (Mildred) Schafer of Horsehead Lake and a sister-in-law, Burlene Schafer of Lansing. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Lenore Schafer, two brothers, Harold and Leon Schafer, one sister, Marian Schafer and brother-in-law, Gary Mueller.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, March 29, 2005 at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, burial at Most Holy Trinity Cemetery with Rev. Fr. John P. Klein officiating. The family will receive friends 7-9 P.M. Sunday and 2-4 and 7-9 P.M. Monday at the Goerge Chapel of Osgood Funeral Homes, Fowler with rosaries being prayed at 8:00 P.M. Sunday and 3:00 P.M. Monday and a vigil service 8:00 P.M. Monday at the funeral home.

latz.jpg (5032 bytes)Katherine M. Latz age 76 of Elsie, Michigan, died Thursday, March 24, 2005 at Memorial Healthcare Center, Owosso, Michigan.

Funeral services will be on Monday, March 28, 2005 at 11:00 A.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel. Burial will take place at Fairfield Township Cemetery, Elsie, Michigan. Pastor Rob McPherson will officiate and visitation will be Saturday 2-8 P.M. with family present 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. and Sunday 6-8 P.M. at the funeral home.

Katherine was born July 18, 1928 in Owosso, Michigan, the daughter of Gilbert & Ella ( Luft ) Wildermuth. She graduated from Owosso High School with the class of 1946, she attend and graduated from Beauty School for Cosmetology. She resided most of her life in the Elsie area.
On October 22, 1949 she married Albert Latz in Owosso, Michigan, Albert predeceased her on January 31, 1997. Katherine was a homemaker who enjoyed aerobic swimming, quilting, painting & cooking. She especially enjoyed & loved her grandchildren. She was a former member of the Shiawassee County Library Board, and was a 4-H Leader.

Survivors include, 3 daughters Rebecca & Keith Keck, of Pleasant Hill, California, Susan & Mark Casler, of Ovid, Michigan, Nancy & Dave Roberts of Belmont, Michigan, 1 son, David & Virginia Latz of Jackson, Michigan, 16 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, 3 sisters, Dorothy & Clyde LeValley of  Owosso, Michigan, Rose & Richard Latz of Chapin, Michigan, Helen & Louis Kunkel of Ovid, Michigan, 1 brother, Gilbert & Sally Wildermuth of Owosso, Michigan.

She was predeceased by her parents, husband, 1 son, Donald, 1 daughter Jane & 1 brother Loren. Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Melanie Jo Piper

Melanie Jo Piper,  47, died Tuesday March 22, 2005 of natural causes. Services 1 p.m. Saturday at Tiffany Funeral Home, Lansing.


John W. Cockrum

John W. Cockrum, age 80, passed away March 20, 2005 at his residence. He was born in Morehead, Kansas on January 15, 1925, the son of John and Stella (Coe) Cockrum. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during World War II and owner of Golf Cars by Cockrums in Saint Johns. John married Elma Peck on May 30, 1948 and she survives him.

He is also survived by his two daughters Jo Ellen Cockrum and Julie Ann (Karl) Tenlen, his son Mark (Vicky) Cockrum, six grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and his sister Mary Grimes. John was preceded in death by his son Gary Cockrum and brothers Delmar and Denver Cockrum.

Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M. Thursday, March 24, 2005 at the Osgood Funeral Home, 104 E. Cass St., Saint Johns with burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery. Military graveside services will be provided by the St. Johns Honor Guard. The family will receive friends at the Funeral Home Tuesday and Wednesday 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Sympathy may be expressed in the form of memorials to Heartland Hospice in memory of John.

Barbara Jean (Lyon) Beals

Barbara Jean (Lyon) Beals died Thursday, March 17, 2005 at the age of 74. Born May 31, 1930 in Mulliken the daughter of Cecil and Myrtle (Sedlow) Lyon. Barbara married Robert Beals August 2, 1952, and he preceded her in death on February 24, 1978.

Surviving are children, Tony (Stephanie) Beals of Sunfield, Robin (Greg) Vance of Hubbardston, Steve (Donna) Beals of Fowler, Nancy (Vic) Castle of Paradise, Texas, grandchildren, Robert and Johnathon Beals, Emily, Erin, and Ethan Vance, Steven, Robert and Katie Beals, Cody Riggle, Dalton and Ryan Castle, one great granddaughter, Emma Beals, brother, Kenneth Lyon, sister, Virginia Bailey, and many nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by her parents and brother, Donald Lyon.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Tuesday, March 22, 2005 at Maple Rapids Congregational Christian Church, 418 S. Maple, Maple Rapids, with Pastor Jerry Kissling officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Sympathy may be expressed in the way of memorials to Carson City Hospice. Arrangements by the Abbott Chapel of Osgood Funeral Homes.

Kenneth “Jack” Dietrich

dietrich_jack.jpg (4164 bytes)Kenneth “Jack” Dietrich passed away Wednesday, March 23, 2005 at the age of 72. He was born October 27, 1932 in Shiawassee County,
Michigan the son of Ransom and Esther (Baker) Dietrich. Jack was a graduate of Rodney B. Wilson High School, Class of 1951, member of
the First Congregational Church in St. Johns, was an Eagle Scout, a Navy veteran of the Korean War, a member of the “51’ Club, an avid and
talented wood carver, a member of the St. Johns Lions Club where he was a member of the Recycling Center Committee. He retired from
Oldsmobile as a tool and die maker after 36 years of service.

Surviving is his wife of 50 years, Virginia, one daughter, Caren (Tom) Tucker of Tarpon Springs, FL; two sons, Steve of East Lansing, Jeff (Linda) of St. Johns; two granddaughters, Jessica (David) Vandergraff of West Palm Beach, FL, Mallorie Tucker of Tarpon Springs, FL; two sisters, Dorothy Day of St. Johns, Clarice Little of Springfield, MO; and many nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents and one brother, Donald.

Funeral services will be 3:00 p.m. Saturday, March 26, 2005 at the Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, 1500 Waterford Parkway, St. Johns with Rev. Cayle Beagle officiating. The family will receive friends, Saturday 1:00 p.m. until service time at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, American Diabetes Association or the St. Johns Lions Club.
