Rosanna R. Remus

remus.jpg (4954 bytes)Rosanna R. Remus, St. Johns, MI Entered into the presence of her Lord May 2, 2005 at the age of 95. She was born in Milledgeville, IL to Ira and Cora Miller on December 13, 1909. She lived most of her life in the St. Johns area where she and her husband Rex farmed in Victor Twp. They were married for 77 years. She was a homemaker, loving mother and wife. She was a member of Grove Bible Church where she was a reading tutor at the Grove Christian School. Previously they were members at the South Baptist Church in Lansing, where she taught Sunday School. Upon retirement, Rex and Rosanna joined the staff at Camp Barakel in Fairview, Michigan where they served the Lord for 22 years. Until in their 90's they moved into Hazel Findley Country Manor in St. Johns.

Rosanna was preceded in death by her parents, Ira and Cora Miller; by her son, Robert Remus in July 1998; by her two brothers, Hiram and Frank Miller; and three sisters, Fanny Taylor, Ethel Taylor Brown, and Mabel Smith. Surviving is her husband, Rex R. Remus; and two sons, Richard (Gerry) Remus of Troy, MI and Frank (Kathy) Remus of Albion, MI. Also surviving are four daughters, Carolann (Art) Farr of St. Johns, Anita (Ralph) Iocco of Ovid, Rosemary (Fred) Smith of Dowagiac and Ruth Ann (Glenn) Hills of St. Johns; by daughter-in-law, Elsie (Robert) Remus; 18 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and 15 great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday May 5, 2005 at 11:00 at the Grove Bible Church with the Rev. Robert Prange officiating. Burial will take place in the Reed Cemetery. John Blauwiekel

John Blauwiekel, 87, retired farmer of Pewamo, died May 2, 2005. Born in Pewamo, October 14, 1917 of Nick and Netta (VanderJagt) Blauwiekel and lived in the Pewamo area all his life. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Fowler-Pewamo-Westphalia V.F.W. Post #3733. On October 5, 1944 he married Marie Bower who preceded him in death in August 1996. He served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Alaska in World War II. He enjoyed visiting his neighbors, grandchildren and attending cross-country and track meets.

Surviving are his children, Ruth (Curt Taylor) Blauwiekel of Vermont, Peter (Brenda) Blauwiekel of Fowler and William (Sheri) Blauwiekel of Kansas, five grandchildren, Anna Taylor, Beth and Joe Blauwiekel, Todd and Troy Blauwiekel and two brothers, Lawrence Blauwiekel of Pewamo and Harry (Diane) Blauwiekel of Grand Rapids. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Beth.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:30 A.M. Friday, May 6, 2005 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 126 East St., Pewamo, burial at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery with the Rev. Fr. Charlon Mason officiating. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 7-9 P.M. Wednesday and Thursday at the Goerge Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes, 11112 W. Ionia, Fowler with rosaries prayed 3 and 8 P.M. Wednesday, 3 P.M. Thursday and a Scripture Service 7 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home. Military graveside services provided by V.F.W. Post #3733.

Irma L. Howell

Irma L. Howell, age 88, died Sunday, May 01, 2005 in Ashley. Born June 15, 1916 in Bates Township, Michigan, the daughter of Benjamin and Myrtle (Bayenton) Blem. She married Lester J. Howell on June 15, 1940 and he preceded her in death on November 8, 1971.

Surviving Irma are two daughters, Betty (Tom) Putz of Lansing, Joanne (Rick) Pearson of Houston, Texas, one son, Lawrence (Wanda) Howell of Elsie, eight grandchildren and three sisters, Isabelle (Bob) Sorrell of Carson City, Laura DeMott of St. Johns and Margueritte Armantrout of Big Rapids.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 P.M. Tuesday at Payne Cemetery, Maple Rapids with Pastor Brian Sheen officiating. Sympathy may be expressed in the form of memorials to Ashley Care Center. The family is being served by Osgood Funeral Homes.

Mary L. Hiller

Hiller_Mary.jpg (4435 bytes)Mary L. Hiller, age 81, passed away on Saturday, April 30, 2005. She was born on December 18, 1923, the daughter of Preston and Vera (Speice) Corson. She was retired from GTE as a Telephone Operator. She was a member of Greenbush United Methodist Church and a past Treasurer of the Greenbush United Methodist Church Women’s Group. She was also a Past President of the American Legion Auxillary and member of the 8 & 40 Auxillary and a member of the Elsie Library Club. She was also a volunteer with Meals on Wheels and the Clinton County Senior Center who enjoyed birdwatching, gardening, canning and bowling. She married Bert Hiller on November 29, 1941 and he preceded her in death on December 29, 1996.

She is survived by her children David (Lani) Hiller of Saint Johns, Marsha Eckerle of Saint Johns and Susan Gurden of Maple Rapids; 5 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. Along with her husband she was preceded in death by her parents, her granddaughter, Mary Leilani Hiller, her brother, Fred Corson, and her sisters, Kathleen Gerhold and Donna Keelan.

Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, May 3, 2005 at Osgood Funeral Home, 104 E. Cass St., Saint Johns, with Pastor Jim Dibbet officiating. Interment will follow in Eureka Cemetery in Greenbush Township. The family will receive visitors 2-4 P.M. and 6-8 P.M. Monday at the Osgood Funeral Home. Sympathy may be expressed in the form of memorial contributions to Greenbush United Methodist Church.

Loretta E. “Billie” Ball

ball_loretta.jpg (4290 bytes)Loretta E. “Billie” Ball, age 99, passed away on Friday, April 29, 2005. She was born on September 5, 1905 in Fowler, the daughter of Frank and Pauline (Platte) Becker. She was a member of Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church. She married Anthony G. Ball on January 24, 1942 and he preceded her in death on February 25, 1991.

She is survived by her sister-in-law Florence Becker of Saint Johns and several nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, May 3, 2005 at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, the Rev. Fr. Steve Makranyi officiating. Interment will follow in Most Holy Trinity Cemetery in Fowler. The family will receive visitors 7-9 P.M. Sunday and 2-4 P.M. and 7-9 P.M. Monday at the Goerge Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes, 11112 W. Ionia St., Fowler with a Rosary at 8 P.M. on Sunday and at 3 P.M. and 8 P.M. on Monday. Sympathy may be expressed in the form of memorial contributions to Most Holy Trinity Education Trust Fund.

Barbara Ann Brown

brown_barbara.jpg (5747 bytes)Barbara Ann Brown, beloved aunt and friend, died in her home April 27, 2005. Born in Clinton County on December 8, 1919, the daughter of Lewis and Pearl (Johnson) Brown, she retired from Michigan State University after forty years as a graphic artist. During her lifetime she worked in various artistic genres, built her own house and innumerable sail boats. She also enjoyed playing the harmonica and competing in bridge, chess and Scrabble.

Barbara is survived by her nieces, Laurie (James) Berns of South Carolina, Mary (Frank Martilik) Brown-Martilik of Florida and Pat (Ray) Fricke of Arizona, nephews, Roger (Pam) Brown of Iowa and Thomas Brown of Michigan, many great nieces and great nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Sybil Brown and brothers, Hiram Brown and John Brown.

Funeral services will be 2 P.M. Monday, May 2, 2005 at the Abbott Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes, 509 E. Main St., Maple Rapids, with entombment at Sowle Cemetery. The family will receive friends Noon – 2 P.M. Monday at the funeral home. Devere Lee “Sonny” Hill

Devere Lee “Sonny” Hill died April 29, 2005, at the age of 74. Born in St. Johns on November 4, 1930, the son of Devere Sr. and Zetta (Stump) Hill and lived his whole life in Owosso and Ovid. He was a man of many trades, a truck driver, farmer, auctioneer and story teller; a lifetime member of Lansing Muzzleloader Gun Club.

Surviving are his partner for life, Verna Houck, sister, Iola Cramer of Harrison, daughters, Annette Lipe of Grayling and Robin Cox of Frederic, step daughters, Margie Cutler of Owosso, Debbie Krauchenko of Owosso, Angel and Scarlet, grandchildren, Pamela Kane of Lansing, Adam Anderson of Freeland, Becky Baumgardner of Owosso and Robbie Cox of Grand Blanc, step grandchildren, Tiffany Cutler of Flint, Crystal Cutler of Owosso and Sandy Fischer of Marlett, and great grandchildren, Caleb Baumgardner of Owosso and John Henry Jr. Chambers of Flint.

Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Monday, May 2, 2005 at the Houghton Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes, 232 E. Oak St., Ovid, with burial at Union Home Cemetery. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Saturday and Sunday at the funeral home.

Sandra J. Rhines

rhines_sandra.jpg (4544 bytes)Sandra J. Rhines died at home surrounded by her loving family, April 28, 2005 at the age of 58. Born in St. Johns on September 16, 1946, the daughter of Clare and Dorothy (Spayde) Rhines. She was an Executive Secretary for the State of Michigan Employment Security Commission retiring in 1992. Sandra married Douglas Parks in St. Johns on December 13, 1984 and he survives her.

Also surviving are daughter, Kelly (Mark) Albers of St. Johns, two grandchildren, Samantha and Sarah Albers of St. Johns, her mother, Dorothy Rhines Hall, three sisters, Linda Myers and Pamela Rhines both of St. Johns, Kathy Karlson of Colorado, special cousin, Diane Eiseler and sister-in-law, Debra Rhines. She was preceded in death by her father, Clare Rhines and brother, Douglas Rhines.

Services will be private. Sympathy may be expressed in the form of memorials to the American Cancer Society. The family was served by Osgood Funeral Homes.

Donald R. Low

Donald R. Low died April 29, 2005 at the age of 75. Born in Ann Arbor June 11, 1929, he was the son of James and Minnie (Dudhope) Low and lived in St. Johns most of his life. He was a member of the First Congregational Church and the American Legion having been past Post Commander and veteran with the U.S. Army. Don owned/operated the former Antes Dry Cleaners for 37 years and was very active in the Downtown Business Association and the Chamber of Commerce during those years. He married Nancy L. Antes August 28, 1955 and she preceded him in death June 10, 1988.

Don is survived by two sons, Michael Low and Charles Low, three daughters, Karen (Roger L.) Thurston, Tracy (Thomas) Beachum, all of St. Johns, and Michelle (Daniel) Ketchum of Mancelona and seventeen grandchildren. In addition to his wife Nancy, he was preceded in death by his son, James Low.

Funeral Services will be 11:00 A.M. Monday, May 2, 2005 at the Osgood Funeral Homes, burial at Eureka Cemetery, with Rev. Matt Olson officiating. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Saturday and Sunday at the funeral home. Military graveside services provided by St. Johns Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, sympathy may be expressed in the form of memorials to Sparrow Home Hospice or Hazel I. Findlay Country Manor.

Wava L. Slavik

Funeral services will be held at East Washington United Brethren Church, Ashley, Michigan on Friday, April 29, 2005 at 11:00 A.M. Burial will take at Riverside Cemetery, Elsie, Michigan. Pastor Jerry Drummond will officiate. Visitation will be Wednesday 6-8 P.M. & Thursday 2-8 P.M. with family present 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel.

Wava was born October 22, 1924 in Bannister, Michigan, the daughter of Manley & Florence ( Denno ) Nixon. She resided most of her life in the Bannister & Ashley area. She graduated from Ashley High School with the class of 1943. On March 30 1946 she married David G. Slavik in Ashley, Michigan, David died September 14, 1997.

Wava was a homemaker who enjoyed her family, church and her farm. She was a member of East Washington United Brethren Church in Ashley.
Survivors include, 1 daughter, Amy & Craig Baker of Ashley, Michigan, 1 son, James & Doreen Slavik of Ashley, Michigan, 7 grandchildren Bryce, Wade, Lynnae, Garrett, Zachary & Hannah, Kylie, 1 sister Betty & Al Church of Perry, Michigan, 1 brother Manley & Frances Nixon of Sacramento, California. She was predeceased by her parents, husband, 2 sisters & 3 brothers.

Memorial may be made to East Washington United Brethren Church, Ashley, Michigan. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel.

Leo Glaister

Leo Glaister,  84, formerly of Coldwater, retired dairy farmer, died Friday April 22, 2005. There will be no services. Arrangements by Osgood Funeral Homes, St. Johns.
