Richard L. Smith

smith_richard.jpg (4476 bytes)Richard L. Smith, age 61, died Monday, May 23, 2005 at his home surrounded by his family. Born November 10, 1943, Richard is the son of Clarence J. and Mary E. (Lennemann) Smith. Richard married Katherine Keelan at St. Therese Catholic in Lansing on November 10, 1973. He was a member of Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, a self-employed carpenter for over 40 years, organized and help direct the local fast pitch league and coached Little League.

Besides his wife, Kathy, Richard is survived by his four children, Patrick of Westphalia, Amanda of Lansing, Jennifer of Fowler and Anthony of Fowler; granddaughter Samantha Pieffer, one brother Louis (Diane Simmon) of Fowler, five sisters, Mary Ann (Edgar) Thelen of Fowler, Teresa, (Ron) Spitzley of Pewamo, Joan (Mike) Weller of Sunfield, Rosanne (James) Lansdell of Portland, and Germaine (James) Thelen of Portland. Richard was preceded in death by his parents.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM, Friday, May 27, 2005 at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 11144 Kent Street, Fowler with the Rev. Father Larry Delaney officiating. The Rite of Committal will follow at Most Holy Trinity Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call at the Goerge Chapel of Osgood Funeral Homes, 11112 Ionia Street Wednesday from 7:00 – 9:00 PM and Thursday from 2:00 – 4:00 and 7:00 – 9:00 PM. Rosaries will be prayed at 8:00 PM Wednesday and 3:00 PM Thursday an a Vigil Service Thursday at 8:00PM.

W. Virginia Mulder

W. Virginia Mulder died May 23, 2005 at the age of 92. Born June 22, 1912 in Bennington Twp., the daughter of Claud and Amnah (Alchin) Spiess. She was a member of Middlebury Methodist Church, Life member of Eastern Star and Clerk of Middlebury Township for 16 years. Virginia married Robert Mulder in Bennington Township on June 3, 1933 and he preceded her in death in 1987.

She is survived by daughter Nancy (Darrell) Smith, sons, William (Donna) Mulder, Michael (Sue) Mulder, twelve grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. Also preceding her in death are her parents, twin sister, Evadyne Lawrence, brother, Claud Spiess Jr., and grandson, Bernie Smith.

Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Thursday, May 26, 2005 at the Houghton Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes, 232 E. Oak St., Ovid, with Pastor Rev. Dr. Gordon Schleicher officiating, burial at Middlebury Cemetery. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Middlebury United Methodist Church.

Onalee M. Byrnes

byrnes_onalee.jpg (5443 bytes)Onalee M. Byrnes died May 22, 2005, at the age of 87. Born in St. Johns on February 14, 1918, the daughter of Earl F. and Clara May (Stevens) Larkins. She was the owner/operator of Byrnes Café in Ovid and a member of Holy Family Catholic Church. Onalee married L. Bernard Byrnes in Laingsburg, MI on November 16, 1938 and he preceded her in death on July 4, 1981.

Surviving are two daughters, Marilyn (Larry) Love of Elberton, GA and Karen (Reynold) Fracassi of Howell, MI, nine grandchildren, twenty-two great grandchildren, one great great grandchild, one sister, Esther Chaffee, several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Gaylord Larkins.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11:00 A.M. Thursday, May 26, 2005 at Holy Family Catholic Church, burial at Maple Grove Cemetery with the Rev. Fr. Paul Cummings officiating. The family will receive friends 6-8 P.M. Tuesday and 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Wednesday at the Houghton Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes with a rosary prayed 7:00 P.M. Wednesday. Sympathy may be expressed in the form of memorials to Farmington Hills Hospice or the American Cancer Society.

Pastor Tom Wilson will officiate with burial at Bingham Township Cemetery St. Johns, Michigan. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 24, 2005 from 6-8 P.M. and Wednesday, May 25, 2005 from 2-4 & 6-8 P.M.

Mary Ann Andrews was born in St. Johns, Michigan on October 1, 1994 the daughter of Gene Lawrence and Juliane Marie (Wilcox-Soper) Andrews. She resided most of her life in St. Johns, Michigan where she attended school at RESA and the Mint City Free Methodist Church. She loved movies with monkeys. She also loved swimming, camping, horseback riding and her school. One of her proudest moments was riding horses alone.

Terry L. Cleland

He was born November 5, 1948 in Carson City, MI the son of Luther V. and Dorothy (Pecktil) Cleland. Terry was the operator and manager of the former Drake’s gas station in St. Johns, a former member of the St. Johns Volunteer Fire Dept., Clinton County Sheriff’s Posse, Clinton County First Aid Volunteers, Tri-County C.R.W., and president elect of Capitol Commons Sr. Residence Council of 2005.

Surviving is his daughter, Heather (Scott) Farrell of Sheridan; son, Brent (Kristen) Cleland of Lansing; three grandchildren, Matthew and Meghann Farrell and Gabriel Cleland; mother, Dorothy (Robert) Prowant of Winter Haven, FL; step-mother, Isabelle Cleland; two sisters, Sharon (Raymond) Vitek, Jennifer (Ralph) Bailey; three brothers, Steve (Jane) Cleland, and Kevin Cleland all of St. Johns, Douglas Brzak of Farmington Hills, MI; former wife, Verna (Slagell) Peters and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and close friends at Capitol Commons Sr. Residence Complex. His father Luther V. Cleland Jr. and step-father Leslie (Keith) Harper preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 24, 2005 at the Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, St. Johns (989) 224-4422 with Pastor Paul Daniels officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Rest Cemetery. Norman R. Sleight

A memorial service for Norman R. Sleight, age 85, of Newark, will be held at 11:30 AM on Wednesday, May 25, at Second Presbyterian Church, 42 East Church Street, Newark, with Rev. Dr. Mitch Van Metre and Rev. Charles Daugherty officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at a reception to be held in the church dining room. Arrangements by Henderson Van Atta & Johnston, Newark, Ohio.

Mr. Sleight, who was born February 15, 1920 in Clinton County, Michigan, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, May 6, 2005.

He was the son of the late Rolan W. and Bernice (Beckwith) Sleight. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Albion College, majoring in chemistry and mathematics. After graduation, he went on to Iowa State University where he studied nuclear chemistry. Until 1946, Mr. Sleight worked as a research chemist for the United States Government's Manhattan Project.

Mr. Sleight started his insurance career as an agent for State Farm in St. Johns, Michigan, and earned his CLU designation from the American College of Life Underwriters in 1951. In 1953 he was selected to start State Farm's operation in Ohio. In 1961 he was selected Regional Vice President (Ohio) and worked in that capacity until his retirement in 1985.

Though he may have retired from his professional career, he never retired from his civic involvement. He served the Newark Rotary Club in several capacities, including president, played an instrumental role in the advancement of Licking Memorial Hospital, including serving as President of the Board and Chairman of the Development Council Special Projects Committee, and served on the Board of Trustees of the Mid-Ohio Health Planning Federation. Mr. Sleight had been very involved with the United Way, chairing several committees and serving as president of the executive board. In addition, he lent his volunteer talents to the YMCA and the Red Cross. Mr. Sleight had been involved with various activities concerning The Ohio State University, including being elected to the Board of Trustees for Ohio State University-Newark. He and his brother, Justin, '43, co-founded the Sleight Leadership Program at Albion College. He was devoted to his church, serving as a ruling elder for the Second Presbyterian Church and as commissioner to the 200th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church.

Mr. Sleight has received several awards in recognition of his ongoing civic contributions. Some of these were honors from the Boy Scouts of America, including the Silver Beaver Award and the God and Service Award. He was elected to the Columbus Chapter of the CLU Hall of Fame as the 1994 inductee. Mr. Sleight was awarded Licking Memorial's Lifetime Achievement Award (1994) and a Distinguished Alumni Award from Albion College (1995).

He is survived by a daughter, Susanne Fuller of Aurora, Illinois; a son, Douglas (Wendy) Sleight of Muskego, Wisconsin; grandchildren, Chris (Susan) Fuller of Hawthorn Woods, Illinois, Cameron (Beth) Fuller of Frisco, Texas, and Sabrina Sleight of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Justin (Marge) Sleight and Stuart Sleight, all of East Lansing, Michigan.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Alethea E. (Paul) Sleight, on February 5, 2001.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Licking County Foundation, the OSU-Newark Campus Development Fund, the Albion College Sleight Leadership Fund or a charity of one's choice.

Irene M. Huhn

Irene M. Huhn,  Eagle, MI Age 90, long-time Eagle farm wife and homemaker. Irene was born in Cook County, IL May 30, 1914 to John and Margaret (nee Palubiak) Igaz. She grew up in Pewamo, MI but returned to Berwyn-Cicero, IL for high school. On August 24, 1935 she married Norman Huhn in Pewamo, MI.

She is survived by her children, Norma, Janice, Gregory (Kathleen), and Geoffrey (Christina). Grandmother of Greg (Robin) Krill, Eric Hofmann, Rachel, Ryan, Kaitlyn, and Emily Huhn. Great Grandmother of Nathan and Lindsey Krill. Sister of Blanche Many. Irene was preceded in death by her husband, Norman and her son, Fr. John P. Huhn. Irene enjoyed playing bridge, bowling, collecting antiques, gardening and bird watching. She enjoyed employment at Sign of the Peacock Antique Store in Grand Ledge as well as an antique business with her daughter, Janice, during the past fifteen years. Her death was the result of burns sustained from a fire.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated by the Reverend Fr. George Daisy Saturday, May 21, 2005, 10:00 a.m. at St. Michael Catholic Church, Grand Ledge with interment to follow at Niles Cemetery, Eagle Twp. Visitation Friday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. with a Scripture Service at 7:30 p.m. at Holihan-Atkin Funeral Home, Grand Ledge. Memorial contributions may be given to the Blodgett Regional Burn Center, 1840 Wealthy St. S.E., Grand Rapids, MI 49506 or St. Michael Catholic Church.

George E. Pierson

pierson_george.jpg (4907 bytes)George E. Pierson, age 81, died May 18, 2005. Born May 9, 1924 the son of John A. and Anna M. (Estes) Pierson and lived most of his life in St. Johns. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and retired from Federal Mogul after 35 years of service. George was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving in World War II on a PT Boat in the South Pacific and was a member of PT Boats, Inc. George married Billie Y. McCurry in Texas March 8, 1947 and she survives him.

Also surviving are three sons, James (Candice) Pierson of St. Johns, David (Rosemary) Pierson of Kalkaska and Jonathan (Karen) Pierson of Memphis, Tennessee, five grandchildren, Dwight (Anne) Pierson, Chad (Nichole) Pierson, Laura Anne (Matthew) Berry, Kayla Pierson and Kristin Pierson, three great grandchildren, Benjamin Pierson, Kristina Pierson and Zachary Pierson and one brother, Albin (Valarie) Pierson of Minden City, MI. George was preceded in death by one sister, one brother, one step brother, and one step sister.

Funeral Services will be 2:00 PM Sunday, May 22, 2005 at the First United Methodist Church, 200 E. State St., St. Johns, burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery with the Reverend Margery Schleicher officiating. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Friday and Saturday at the Osgood Funeral Home. Military graveside services provided by St. Johns Honor Guard. Sympathy may be expressed in the form of memorials to the First United Methodist Church.

Helen F. Trierweiler

Helen F. Trierweiler,  Bath, MI Born April 11, 1933, in Riley Township; died May 16, 2005, at the age of 72. Mrs. Trierweiler was an excellent seamstress and had made wedding dresses for countless brides. She was a member of St. Isidore Catholic Church, Laingsburg. Mrs. Trierweiler was preceded in death by her husband, Giles; brother, Lewis; and sisters, Genevieve and Virginia.

Surviving are her daughter, Nanette (Graham) Bendall of Bath; son, Timothy (Jane) Trierweiler of Kewadin, MI; grandchildren, Lyndsay, Kathleen and Nicholas Bendall and Dylan, Amanda and Abigail Trierweiler; brother, Martin Pung; sisters, Patricia Snyder, Gladys Stump, Lucille Bohr and Esther Nickel.

Memorial services will be celebrated on Saturday, May 21, at 10 a.m. at St. Isidore Catholic Church, 310 N. Crum, Laingsburg. The Rite of Committal will be held in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Lansing. The family will receive friends at the Church on Saturday 1-hour prior to the service. Those desiring may make contributions to St. Isidore Catholic Church Building Fund or to the American Heart Association, in memory of Mrs. Trierweiler. The family is being served by the Gorsline-Runciman Co. East Chapel, East Lansing.
