Walter L. Ebnit

Ebnit-Walter.jpg (4583 bytes)Walter L. Ebnit passed away May 31, 2005 at the age of 77. Born May 18, 1928 in Gratiot County, Pine River Twp., the youngest son of Aldolf and Rose Ebnit. Walt was a veteran of the Korean War and worked at Olds in Lansing for over 30 years. He had a talent and love of antique cars and enjoyed working with and driving them, he also enjoyed working with wood. Walt married Betty Brundage on June 15, 1956 and they have had many happy years together.

Also surviving are two children, son, Donald Ebnit of Ft. Wayne, IN, daughter, Susan (Larry) Webster of St. Johns, four grandchildren, Catherine Ebnit, Andrew McElfresh, Billy McElfresh and Cody Ebnit and one sister, Dorothy (Art) Harrison of Alma. He was preceded in death by his parents, and one grandson, Roy.

Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Friday, June 3, 2005 at the Osgood Funeral Home, burial at Riverside Cemetery, Alma, with the Rev. Dr. Rod Kalajainen officiating. Military graveside services provided by St. Johns Honor Guard and V.F.W. Post #1454, Alma. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 7-9 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home. Sympathy may be expressed in the form of memorials to the American Cancer Society or the Michigan Parkinson Foundation.

Robert D. Powers

powers_robert.jpg (4599 bytes)Robert D. Powers,  St. Johns, MI Formerly of Lansing, MI The son of Raymond and Eva (Hudson) Powers passed away Saturday, May 28, 2005 at the age of 82. Robert was born on April 24, 1923 in Howell, Michigan. He retired in 1984, after working 27 years for the Board of Water & Light in the maintenance department.

He is survived by his second wife of 22 years, Jeanette (Pohl) Powers of St. Johns; four children, Sharon (Dale) Pollok of Williamston, Robert (Michele) Powers of Charlotte, Debra (Gary) Childs of Mason, Terry (Patti) Powers of Holt; four stepchildren, Mike (Shirley) Henning of St. Johns, Patti (Mark) Caswell of Houghton Lake, Sally (Steve) Lackey of St. Johns, Judy (Bob) Mills of St. Johns; two brothers, Ken (Laura) Powers of St. Johns, Ted (Dawn) Powers of Holland Lake; fifteen grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Robert was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Juanita Elizabeth Powers in 1981, his daughter-in-law, Pamela Powers, one sister and two brothers.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 1, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. at Palmer, Bush & Jensen Family Funeral Homes, Lansing Chapel with Rev. Dr. William Barber officiating. Interment will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends, Tuesday 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions can be made to Great Lakes Hospice or American Cancer Society.

Judy L. Atherton

Judy L. Atherton,  Portland, MI Age 54, went to be with Jesus on May 30, 2005. She was born on April 14, 1951, in St. Johns, the daughter of Harold and Bernita (Armbrustmacher) Nurenberg. Judy was a member of Sunfield United Brethren Church. She had a deep commitment to God and her family, and she loved people, especially kids. On June 6, 1972, she married Roy R. Atherton. Judy was preceded in death by her parents.

Surviving are her husband, Roy; children, Nicole and Keith; sister, Mary Jane (Dennis) Smith; brothers, Ronald (Beverly) Nurenberg and Joseph (Helen) Nurenberg, all of Westphalia; many nieces and nephews and cousins.

A Memorial service will be conducted by Pastor and husband, Roy R. Atherton and Pastor Mark Ralph at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, June 2, 2005 at Sunfield United Brethren Church, 8436 W. Grand Ledge Hwy., Sunfield. The family will receive friends 5:30 p.m. until the service time at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the children's college fund in memory of their mother. Complete arrangements are being handled by Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, Portland.

Vernon Bandt

bandt_vernon.jpg (4700 bytes)Vernon R. Bandt, age 69, died Sunday, May 29, 2005 in St. Johns. Vern, the son of Robert and Marina (Flegler) Bandt, was born September 5, 1935 in Lansing, served his country in the U. S. Army and was manager of the former A. B. & T. and First of America banks retiring from the now National City Bank. Vern married Barbara E. Levine August 17, 1963 in St. Johns and she preceded him in death June 7, 2003. Vern was also preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Larry Bandt and a grandson, Deshawn Tyree Johnson (February 21, 1994).

Survivors include his daughter, Beth Ann Matice of Lansing, four grandchildren, Christopher of St. Johns, and Heather Matice, Kiari Johnson and Lakia Johnson all of Lansing, a sister, Bethany Barish of DeWitt; one niece and four nephews.

Funeral Services will be 11:00 A.M., Thursday, June 2, 2005 at St. Peter Lutheran Church, 8990 Church Road, St. Johns with Pastor Jeffrey Heimsoth officiating. Interment will follow in St. Peter Lutheran Church Cemetery with Military Graveside Services provided by Edwin J. Leyanna V.F.W. Post #671, Dewitt. Visitation will be Tuesday 6:00 – 8:00 P.M., Wednesday 2:00 – 4:00 and 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. at Osgood Funeral Home, 104 E. Cass Street, St. Johns and one hour prior to the Service at Church. Sympathy may be expressed in the form of memorials to the American Diabetes Association, American Heart Association, or the American Cancer Society in memory of Vern.

Thomas Lewis Placer

Thomas Lewis Placer,   age 95, died May 26, 2005; Born September 8, 1909 in South Ovid, Michigan. Mr. Placer retired from Tranter Manufacturing in 1972 and was a retired farmer. After retirement they moved to Houghton Lake, returning to Lansing in 1994. He was a member of Gunnisonville United Methodist Church and spent winters in Bradenton, Florida where he also had many friends. He was preceded in death by 1 brother and 3 sisters.

Surviving are his wife, Bonnetta; 2 daughters, Jane L. Casler of Lansing and Beverly A. French of Dayton, OH; 6 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 31, 2:00 p.m. at the Gorsline-Runciman Co. DeWitt Chapel, 111 S. Franklin, DeWitt with the Rev. Thomas Truby, Pastor of Gunnisonville United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Lansing. The family will receive friends at the Chapel Tuesday from Noon until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, those desiring may make contributions to Gunnisonville United Methodist Church, 2031 E. Clark Road, Bath, MI 48808 in memory of Mr. Placer.

Reo E. Sievert

sievert_reo.jpg (4215 bytes)Reo E. Sievert, age 80, died May 27, 2005. He was born January 6, 1925 in Saint Johns, the son of Wilbur A. and Lillian (Dobson) Sievert. He was an employee of the U.S. Post Office first as Post Master and then Rural Carrier in Ashley. He retired as a Rural Carrier from Saint Johns in January 1984. Reo enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards, storytelling and an occasional practical joke. Reo married Mary Ellen Elliott on February 5, 1944 in Saint Johns and she survives him.

Also surviving are his children Brian (Pamela) Sievert, Ann (Eldon) Whitford and Kay (David) Aughton; his 8 grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and sister Joyce (Bill) Benedict of TN. Reo was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Max Sievert.

A Memorial Service will be at 3:00 PM Monday, June 6, 2005 at the Osgood Funeral Home, 104 E. Cass St., St. Johns with Pastor Jerry Drummond officiating. The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service at the Osgood Funeral Home. Sympathy may be expressed in the form of memorials to the American Heart Association or the Alzheimer’s Association.

Lucille Hopp

hopp_lucille.jpg (4828 bytes)Lucille Hopp died peacefully, with her family by her side, on Friday, May 27, 2005 at the age of 84. She was born May 4, 1921 in Olive Township, Clinton County, Michigan the daughter of Henry and Ruth (Drake) Moinet and attended Merle Beach School in her youth. She maintained strength and character as part of the Greatest Generation during the Depression and World War II. Her generosity and caring were demonstrated through her volunteer work with several organizations, such as the Mid-Michigan Red Cross Blood Bank, VFW Post # 4113 Ladies Auxiliary, Clinton Memorial Hospital and Hazel I. Findlay Country Manor. She was honored with the Hazel I. Findlay Country Manor Volunteer of the Year Award for the year 2000 and the Volunteer of the Year Award for Outstanding Service by the Health Care Association of Michigan for the year 2000. Lucille was a homemaker but found time to work at the former E.F. MacKinnon Department Store and Jean’s Beans Restaurant in St. Johns. She enjoyed playing cards, trying her luck at the casino and fishing. A bother, Norman Moinet, one nephew, Terry Devereaux, and her husband of 57 years, Glenn preceded her in death.

Surviving is one son Dick (Sally) Hopp of DeWitt; one daughter, Luann (Bruce) Holzwarth of Grand Rapids; two grandsons, Dustin Holzwarth and Mike Hopp; and one sister Olive “Buzz” Devereaux of St. Johns.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 31, 2005 at the Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, St. Johns (989) 224-4422 with Elder Earl Barks officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Rest Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Sunday and 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Clinton Memorial Hospital or Hazel I. Findlay Country Manor.

Viola C. Schafer

Schafer-Viola.jpg (12373 bytes)Viola C. Schafer died May 26, 2005 at the age of 93. Born in Westphalia, Michigan July 22, 1911, the daughter of Frank and Elizabeth (Belen) Fernholz and lived in the Fowler and St. Johns area most of her life. On October 27, 1936 she marrried Alfred Schafer and he preceded her in death January 12, 1977.

Viola is survived by two daughters, Rosemary Steavens of Owosso and Alice (Roger) Steavens of Elsie, one son Roman Schafer of Lyons, 13 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren, son-in-law, Melvin Jaquette of Houghton Lake and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Viola was preceded in death by one son Ronald Schafer, daughter, Arlene Jaquette, grandsons, Jeffrey Steavens and Bryan Steavens, son-in-law, Ronald Steavens, one sister and 7 brothers.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, May 31, 2005 at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, corner of Kent and Maple Streets, Fowler, burial at Holy Trinity Cemetery with Rev. Fr. Steve Makranyi officiating. The family will receive friends 2-6 P.M. Sunday and Monday at the Osgood Funeral Homes, 104 E. Cass St., St. Johns with a rosary prayed 3 P.M. Monday.

Marcella A. Schueller

Schueller-Marcella.jpg (14920 bytes)Marcella A. Schueller died May 25, 2005 at the age of 91. Born in Dallas Township November 14, 1913, she was the daughter of Peter and Rosina (Smith) Schueller and lived most of her life in the Fowler, Westphalia and Pewamo areas. She was a member of Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church and the Daughters of Isabella and was self employed.

She is survived by her nieces, Arlene Schafer, Alice Smith, Patricia Smith, Joyce Thelen, Wilma (George) Whitehead, Judy (David) Thelen and Sue Smith, nephews, Roy (Arline) Smith, Dennis (Mary) Smith and Peter (Linda) Smith, several great nieces and great nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Irene Smith and nephew, Delbert Smith.

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:00 A.M. Saturday, May 28, 2005 at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Fowler, with the Rev. Fr. James Eisele as celebrant, burial at St. Mary's Cemetery, Westphalia. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 7-9 P.M. Friday at the Goerge Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes, 11112 W. Ionia, Fowler. The rosary will be prayed 3 P.M. Friday with a Scripture Service 8 P.M. Friday at the funeral home. Sympathy may be expressed in the form of memorials to Hazel I. Findlay Country Manor or Most Holy Trinity Education Trust Fund.

Betty L. Casler

Betty L. Casler died May 25, 2005 at the age of 77. Born in St. Johns on November 4, 1927, the daughter of Clayton and Idalee (Cook) Fisher. She retired as a teletypist for Sears & Roebuck Co. in 1974 after 25 years of service.

Surviving are two sons, Walter (Sandy) Gregory of Pinellas Park, FL and Steven (Karen) Gregory of Northport, two grandsons, Matthew (Lori) Gregory of Lowell, MI and Aaron (Nicole) Gregory of St. Johns, two granddaughters, Stacy (Robert) Holmes of Grand Ledge and Shannon Gregory of Florida, four great granddaughters, Anastasia Leah Holmes, Halle Gregory, Paryse Winter Holmes and Annalisa Crain and five great grandsons, Clayton Gregory, Michael Crain, Matthew Crain, Evan Gregory and Sipriano Holmes. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Elton in 1998 and brother, William Fisher.

A memorial gathering will be held 7:00 P.M. Saturday, May 28, 2005 in the Chapel at Pilgrim United Methodist Church, 2965 W. Parks Rd., St. Johns with Rev. Merlin Pratt officiating.  Arrangements by Osgood Funeral Homes.

Thomas J. Coleman

Coleman, 58 of St. Johns, MI beloved husband, father, grandfather, son, brother and uncle passed away Wednesday May 25, 2005 at Sparrow Hospital after a courageous battle with Leukemia. Thomas was born May 11, 1947 in Davenport, Iowa the son of John & Gertrude (Bernard) Coleman. He graduated from Davenport High School and on Oct. 29, 1966 he married Mary Jo Ramsey in Davenport, Iowa and she survives him.Thomas was an electrician with General Motors and worked at Plant 3, he was a member of the UAW Local 652, and I.B.E.W. Local 145, and a Veteran of the U.S. Navy. 

He is survived by his Mother Gertrude Coleman of Davenport, Iowa, his sister Maggie Coleman, sister Darlene Coleman both of Davenport, Iowa; sister Mary Fillinger of New York, Daughters Lynn Marie of St. Johns, Tina & Rick Rowland of Davenport, Iowa, Brandi & Jeff Fultz of Clinton Twp. MI.; Kimberly & Steve Curtis of Grand Ledge, MI; Christina & Nic Coleman-Hall of St. Johns, MI. 4 Grandchildren, Ashley, Andrew, Stephanie, and Zachary; sister–in-law Darilyn Andrew of Unionville, MO and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his Father, Sister Janet and Brother Jack.

At his request there will be no services. Memorial contributions may be made to The Thomas Coleman Fund for Bone Marrow Transplant Research at Firstbank, 201 N. Clinton St. Johns. MI. The family is being served by Keck-Coleman Funeral Home. 989-224-4422

George Shipley

George Shipley,  age 68 of Maryville, passed away Monday, May 16, 2005 at Colonial Hills Nursing Home. He retired to Maryville from Michigan and was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church. He was a very active member of the Sparkplug Sunday School class. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold & Grace Shipley and his brother, William"Bill" Shipley.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Eleanore (Northouse) Shipley; son, Scott W. Shipley of Mississippi; daughters, Suzanne Shipley and Sharon Wade both of Maryville; granddaughter, Nicole Hennessey of Maryville; brother, Gordon C. (Jean) Shipley of St. Johns; sister, Wilda (Gerald) Becker ; several nieces & nephews and numerous friends.

Memorial service were held 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 18, 2005, Trinity Chapel, Smith Mortuary with Dr. Jerry Russell and Rev. Jim Harless officiating. Entombment followed at Grandview Cemetery Mausoleum. Memorial donations may be made in memory of Mr. Shipley to the American Cancer Society or Fairview United Methodist Church Building Fund, 2508 Old Niles Ferry Road, Maryville, TN 37803. The family   received friends from 2:00 pm until 3:00 pm, Wednesday at Smith Mortuary, Maryville, 865-983-1000.
