Terry Cornwell Terry Cornwell, a man of wisdom,
compassion, and strong character, passed away June 14, 2005, at the age of 58, ending a
long, courageous battle with diabetes. People were the center of his life, both in his
chosen career as teacher and counselor and when surrounded by family and friends. He so
enjoyed his boat at the lake and loved spending time with his grandchildren. He was always
ready for fun and those who loved him appreciated his sense of humor, and even his jokes.
He continually inspired many with his positive attitude and determined spirit. He was born
in Chicago, Illinois on February 2, 1947, the son of Russell and Mary (McKinney) Cornwell.
He worked in the St. Johns Public Schools for 31 years and was very active in many
community activities throughout the years. Terry married Dorothy Evitts in St. Johns on
April 19, 1968 and she survives him. Betty Ann Dettling Moore
passed away Sunday, June 12, 2005, after a long journey with Alzheimers. Mom was
born September 12, 1932 in Jackson, Michigan. She graduated from Saint Marys
Academy, Jackson Community College and her dearly loved University of Michigan. She was
the editor of the U of Ms yearbook, the Ensian, and contributed to the 100th
anniversary compilation committee. Mom was the ultimate multi-tasker and a caring
contributor to her cherished community of St. Johns, serving on many boards and
organizations while finding time to garden, can fruits and vegetables, tole paint, and
participate in bridge clubs. She was a founding member of the Clinton County Historical
Society and wrote and edited numerous articles for 1980s History of Clinton County.
First and foremost, Mom as an educator, initially as a middle school History and English
teacher. She later worked passionately for alternative education and was the initial
program director for Fowlervilles Enterprise High. One of Moms shining and
proudest moments was on February 12, 2001, at a St. Johns city council meeting. Mom was
honored for her wisdom, dedication and civic spirit and was presented with a plaque and
resolution of appreciation for her 12 years of service on the St. Johns City Planning
Commission. During her eloquent, simply wonderful speech, she gave thanks and praise to
St. Johns, to the community. Mom is preceded in death by her father Paul, mother Evarista
and husband James. Theodora Howard age 67 of St. Johns and formerly of Laingsburg died Monday June 13, 2005 at Sparrow Health systems in Lansing. she was born in Laingsburg on November 18, 1937 to Aristedes and Helen (Baumgardner)Christacopulos. Theodora graduated from Laingsburg High School in 1955, then attended Cedarville College,received a AA degree from El Camino College in Los Angeles, CA, a BA from the University of Arizona, a MA from Northern Michigan University, a Education Specialist from Indiana University,and a MA from Jerusalem University College On December 10, 1955 she married Frank Howard in Laingsburg. She attended the First Baptist Church in St. Johns and loved kniting , was a member of the Michigan Education Association and a member of TESOL. Theodora was a teacher and retired as a Principal in Calumet Public Schools.
Spencer S. Wiltsee age 82 of Bannister, Michigan, died Saturday, June 11, 2005 at Carson City Hospital, Carson City, Michigan. Funeral Services will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel, on Wednesday, June 15, 2005 at 11:00 A.M. Rev. Ray Strawser will officiate with burial at Riverside Cemetery, Elsie, Michigan. Visitation will be held Tuesday, June 14, 2005 2-8 P.M. with family present 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. Spencer was born in Hammond, Indiana on April 22, 1923 the son of Loren Arthur & Helen ( Smith ) Wiltsee. He resided most of his life in the Bannister & Elsie areas, and he graduated from Elsie High School with the class of 1941. On December 31, 1955 he married Edna Spiekerman in Boyne City, Michigan. He retired from General Motors, Fisher Body Plant, Lansing, in 1973 after 30 years of service, he also farmed. Spencer was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church in Elsie, Michigan and he also served his country in the U.S. Army in World War II in Europe. His grandchildren were very special to him and he also enjoyed his animals on the farm. Survivors include his wife, Edna Wiltsee of Bannister, Michigan, 1 son Kurt & LaDawn Wiltsee of Elsie, Michigan, 3 granddaughters, Heather & Jason Watson of Bannister, Michigan, Maureen & Jennifer Wiltsee of Elsie, Michigan, and 1 great grandson, Hunter. He was predeceased by his parents & his wonderful grandmother Edith Smith. Memorials may be made to The First Baptist Church, Elsie, Michigan. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel. Phyllis L. Cox, 73 of St. Johns
died Monday, June 13, 2005 at her residence following a short illness. She was born in
Williamston, MI on Survivors include her husband Ed., 3 sons Robert Cox (Karen Rupp) of Dimondale, Donald L. Cox of Lansing and Wayne & Michelle Cox of St. Johns; 4 daughters: Vivian K. & Keith Wineland of St. Johns, Cristine K. & Frank Golupski of St. Johns, Alice G. Cox of Lansing and Corrine Ramereiz and fiancé Tim Droste of St. Johns; 12 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren; brother, Harley Parker of Brighton Special friends Barney Welch and Ronda Welch. She was preceded in death by son Thomas D. in 1973 and 2 sisters, Pauline Susa and Charlotte Brockway, brother Lawrence Parker and grandson, Benson Cox. Funeral services will be held at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, 989-224-4422, on Thursday, June 16, 2005 at 1:00 P.M. with Rev. Hugh Banninga officiating. The family will receive friends on Tuesday and Wednesday, 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donors choice. Ellen M. Griffin passed away at her home June 11, 2005 at the age of 66. She was born June 2, 1939 in St. Johns, the daughter of Gilford and Eloise (Thurston) Pease. Ellen was a former member of the First Congregational Church and lived in St. Johns most of her life. She married Clyde Griffin on May 18, 1968 and he preceded her in death May 2, 1991. Surviving are one son, Richard H. (Ruth Ann) Griffin , two stepsons, Richard J. Griffin and Gary L. Griffin, three stepdaughters, Carol Chunko, Debbie Huss, and Sharon Ringle, three grandsons, Richard Scott Griffin, Jr., Ryan Griffin, and James Black, three granddaughters, Krystal Ringle, Amy Ringle and Michelle Ringle, and one brother, Donald Pease. Along with her husband, Ellen was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Dean, R.G. and Raymond Pease and her sister-in-law, Barbara Pease. There will be no visitation or funeral services as Ellens wishes were to be cremated. There will be a Memorial Gathering at 4:00 P.M., Thursday, June 16, 2005 at the VFW Hall in Ovid. Pearl Benjamin passed away June 11, 2005 at the age of 89. She was born July 14, 1915 in Sheldon, Illinois the daughter of William and Rebecca (Sowders) Wickiser. On November 20, 1948 she married Clayton Benjamin and he preceded her in death January 28, 1983. Pearl lived in Middleton and Maple Rapids and attended the Congregational Christian Church. She was a former member of the Church of Christ in Sheldon, Illinois. Pearl retired from Sealed Power Manufacturing after over 25 years of service. She is survived by her sister, Kathleen Ryan of Maple Rapids and her nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and parents, Pearl was preceded in death by three sisters, Maude Farney, Louise Whitney, and Joan Follick. Funeral Services will be at 11A.M. Tuesday, June 14, 2005 at the Congregational Christian Church, Maple Rapids followed by burial at Payne Cemetery with Rev. Jerry Keranen officiating. Anne T. Snater died June 10, 2005 at the age of 92. She was born in Jackson County, MN on July 29, 1912 the daughter of Newell and Adella (Gosnell) George. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Esther Circle and Blue Star Mothers. Anne married George Snater August 15, 1929 and he preceded her in death June 5, 1988. She is survived by two sons, Harold (friend Dorie) Snater of St. Louis and Lloyd (Dee) Chaplain of Missouri, two daughters, Dolores Dee (Robert) Cartwright of Jackson, MI, and Patricia (Edward Bud) Moore of St. Johns, 15 grandchildren, many great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, daughter in law, Juliane Snater of St. Johns, and sister-in-law Norma George of Ovid, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Anne was preceded in death by one son, Arthur Snater, one sister, Florence LaVerne and three brothers, Charles, Frank and Lloyd George. Robert was born in Elsie, MI on March 8, 1923 the son of George E. and Wilahmena ( Heinze ) Moore. He resided most of his life in the Elsie Area and graduated from Elsie High School with the class of 1941. Robert married Doris Oberlin on February 23, 1946 in Elsie, Michigan. Robert served in the US Army during World War II. He was a farmer. He enjoyed antique tractors, cutting wood and farming. He was a member of Bannister United Methodist Church as well as Elsie Lions Club, Crop Improvment Association, Soil Conservation Committee, Farm Bureau, Ovid VFW and the American Legion #502, Elsie, MI. He is survived by his wife Doris Moore of Elsie, MI, children; Carl & Ellen Moore of Cedar Springs, MI, Calvin & Pat Moore of Cedar Springs, MI, Carter Moore of Elsie, MI, Robert Alan & Phyllis Moore of Bannister, MI, Kathleen & Jeff Roberts of Corunna, MI, Cindy & Radford Ching of Elsie, MI, 19 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and sister Betty & Bill Tomkins of Beulah, MI. Frazeur, III, died Wednesday, June 8, 2005 at the age of 24. Born April 13, 1981, George was the son of George Frazeur, Jr. and Debbie Barnes. He was owner of Third Generation Trucking of St. Johns and enjoyed motorcycles, semi-trucks and spending time with family and friends. George is survived by his parents George Wm., (Heather Cunningham) Frazeur, Jr. of Perry; and Debbie Barnes both of St. Johns; one sister Shauna Frazeur; and grandparents, Richard Barnes and Eileen Barnes both of Lansing and special friend, Andrea Ryan. Funeral Services will be 1:00 P.M. Monday, June 13, 2005 at Redeemer United Methodist Church (corner of Clark and Shavey Roads, DeWitt) with the Reverend Dr. Rodney J. Kalajainen officiating. Interment will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Saturday and Sunday 2:00 4:00 and 6:00 8:00 P.M. at the Osgood Funeral Home, 104 E. Cass Street, St. Johns and one hour prior to the Service at Church. Edwin Schueller, Westphalia, MI Age 94, passed away on Wednesday, June 8, 2005. He was born on April 5, 1911 in Pewamo, MI the son of Joseph and Anna (Lenneman) Schueller. Mr. Schueller was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters and also a member of the St. Joseph's Society. Ed retired from T.R.W. after many years of service. He loved to play cards and do yardwork, especially tending to flowers. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Laurine; brothers, Ronald, Joseph, Richard, Robert and Mark; sister, Erma Schueller. Surviving are 6 children, Bernice Schueller of St. Johns, Eugene (Laraine) Schueller of Portland, Larry (Nancy) Schueller of Portland, Darlene (Phil) Hulings of Thorton, CO, Karen (Don) Spohn of Laingsburg and Brian Schueller of Charlotte; 12 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; brothers, Paul (Gladys) Schueller of St. Johns and James (Irene) Schueller of Grand Rapids; brother-in-law, Arnold Nurenberg of Westphalia; many nieces and nephews. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Cecilio Reyna, Pastor, at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, June 11, 2005 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Westphalia. Rite of Committal will follow at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Westphalia. The family will receive friends at the St. Mary's Funeral Chapel, 210 N. Westphalia St., Westphalia from 7-9 p.m. Thursday and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday. Rosaries will be prayed at 8 p.m. Thursday, and 3 p.m. Friday. A Scriptural Wake Service will be held at 8 p.m. Friday. Al Miller Educational Trust or to the Hospice House of Mid-Michigan, in memory of Mr. Edwin M. Schueller. Paul K. Jopke passed away on Tuesday, June 7, 2005 at the age of 55. He was born December 29, 1949 in St. Johns the son of Paul F. and Mabel H. (Kennett) Jopke. Paul was a 1968 graduate of Rodney B. Wilson High School in St. Johns, was a Navy Veteran of the Viet Nam War where he served on the USS Eversole, was a member of American Legion Post # 153, V.F.W. Post # 4113 and the Elks Lodge #1610. He loved dogs, enjoyed fishing and hunting and remodeling his home with his friends, who did most of the work. Paul was a car enthusiast, and his pride and joy was his 1965 Chevrolet Malibu which he drag raced. He retired from Dana Corp. where he worked in quality control. He was preceded in death by his parents, beloved sister Melissa Jean Stephens, and a cousin Dr. Janet H. Jopke. Surviving are two daughters, Melissa Jopke of Lansing and Brooke Jopke of Okemos; sister, Catherine A. Pouch and husband Thomas of Toledo, OH; niece, Kimberly (Pouch) Rhynes and husband Glenn of Fullerton, CA; nephew, Christopher T. Pouch and wife Diane of Surprise, AZ; sweetheart, Rachel (Harlow) Hollingsworth of Midland, and many friends. A memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 14, 2005 at St. Johns Episcopal Church, 400 E. Walker St., St. Johns, MI with the Rev. Dr. Richard Anderson officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Rest Cemetery, St. Johns with military honors provided by the St. Johns Honor Guard. High died June 7, 2005 at the age of 74. Born in Detroit on April 29, 1931, the son of Archibald and Gertrude (Heleski) High. He was an Army Veteran of the Korean War, a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and retired from General Motors where he was a Design Engineer. Howard enjoyed spending time at his home in Gulf Shores , and was very proud of his children and granddaughters and had a generous and giving nature. He was a member of the V.F.W. , The Fraternal Order of Eagles, Elks Clubs, and the DeWitt Moose Lodge. Howard married Rita Kreski in Detroit on July 23, 1955 and she preceded him in death on May 16, 1992. Howard is survived by special friend, Maggie Willingham of Florence, AL., daughter, Mary (George) Enochs of St. Johns, son, Jeff (Peggy) High of Edgerton, WI., and two grandchildren, Kathryn and Elizabeth Enochs of St. Johns. Also preceding him in death is one brother, Thomas High. The Funeral Mass will be 10:00 A.M., Monday, June 13, 2005 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 109 Linden St., St. Johns, with The Rev. Fr. Eoin Murphy officiating, burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery. The family will receive friends, 2-4 and 6-9 Sunday at Osgood Funeral Home, 104 E. Cass St., St. Johns, with a vigil at 7:30 P.M.
