Rex G.  Foland

Rex G. Foland, age 70, of St. Johns, passed away Sunday morning, June 19, 2005 at Carson City Hospital. The son of Earl & Frances Hazel (Brackins) Foland, he was born on July 21, 1934 in Charlotte. Rex was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving stateside during the Korean Conflict. On April 23, 1955, in Hubbardston, he married the former Nancy L. Gage. He retired from General Motors Oldsmobile plant in Lansing with over 35 years of service. In retirement, Rex enjoyed deer hunting and with his wife, Nancy, they delighted in finding treasures and bargains at flea markets and garage sales.

Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Nancy L. Foland of St. Johns; his twin brother and a sister-in-law, Max & Betty Foland of Midland County; special friends, Michelle & Kevin Bailey of St. Johns; and several nieces and nephews.

Honoring his wishes, cremation has taken place and no services will be held. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Rex are suggested to Carson City Hospital (P.O. Box 879, Carson City, MI 48811-0879) where both Rex and Nancy truly appreciated the compassionate care and concern of all the staff. The Brown-Teman & Christiansen Funeral Home, Greenville, is serving the family and is entrusted with the arrangements.

Gale L. Crawley

crawley_gale.jpg (4754 bytes)Gale L. Crawley passed away June 18, 2005 at the age of 54. He was born January 26, 1951 in Lansing, MI the son of Ivan and Maxine (Gardner) Crawley and they preceded him in death. Gale was a 1969 graduate of Rodney B. Wilson High School, in St. Johns a life time MSU Spartan sports fan, loved playing golf and had a great sense of humor.

He enjoyed spending time with his four children, who survive him, Kristi of Lansing, Kevin (Michelle) of DeWitt, Doug of St. Johns and Todd of Ionia. Also surviving is a grandson Grant; two brothers, Gary (Connie) of Muncie, IN, Greg (Sue) of Lansing; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, June 23, 2005 at the Keck-Coleman Funeral Home (989) 224-4422 with Rev. Dr. Rodney Kalajainen officiating. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday and 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Alice Rose ( Babi ) Fornusek

Mass of Christian Burial will be at St. Cyril’s Catholic Church, Bannister, Michigan on Tuesday, June 21, 2005 at 11:00 A.M. Burial will take place at Ford Cemetery, Elsie, Michigan, Rev. Fr. Wolfgang Streichardt will officiate. Visitation will be Sunday 4-8 P.M. and Monday 2-8 P.M. with family present 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. and a Rosary will be prayed on Monday evening at 6:00 P.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel.

Alice was born in Detroit, Michigan on February 21, 1924 the daughter of Paul & Josephine ( Klouda ) Hrncharik Sr. she resided most of her life in the Bannister area. She was married to Edward Fornusek Sr. on November 17, 1945 at St. Cyril's Catholic Church, in Bannister, Michigan, Ed died in 1987. Alice retired from Universal Electric in Owosso, Michigan. She was very active in 4_H and the ZCBJ Lodge #225 in Bannister, Michigan,. She taught crocheting to many people, and her love for designing & making Czechoslovakian costumes for all ages. She was well known for her beautiful hand work on the costumes and the dolls she created. Alice also loved to cook & bake. For many years, she worked on a team of ladies that made dinners for many weddings in the area. People from all around ordered kolache or dumplings from her. She was a member of St. Cyril's Catholic Church, Bannister, Michigan, ZCBJ Lodge #225, Bannister, Michigan.

Survivors include her daughter, Carol Ann & John Snyder of Owosso, Michigan, 1 son, Edward & Joanne Fornusek Jr. of Bannister, Michigan, 3 granddaughters, Teresa & Aaron Eldred of Grand Ledge, Michigan, Amy Fornusek of Houghton Lake, Michigan, Lauren & Jeff Hough of Howell, Michigan, 3 grandsons, David & Sandi Strachota of Gaines, Michigan, Douglas Strachota of Owosso, Michigan, Eddy & Donnielle Fornusek of Ithaca, Michigan, 5 great grandchildren, Nicholas, Riley, Wesley, Christa, Necole, 2 sisters, Rose & Robert Marks of Owosso, Michigan, Hilda & Joseph Micka of Elsie, Michigan, 1 brother, John & Evelyn Hrncharik of St. Johns, Michigan, sister in law, Agnes Hrncharik of Ovid, Michigan.

She was predeceased by her parents, 1 granddaughter, Karen Fornusek, 1 brother Paul Hrncharik. Memorial can be made to the ZCBJ #225, Bannister or WOES Radio at Ovid-Elsie High School. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel.

Bernice Irene “ Bun” Gallup

Funeral services will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Ithaca Chapel, on Tuesday, June 21, 2005 at 1:30 P.M. Burial will take place at North Star Cemetery, North Star, Michigan. Ms. Jana Jirak & Rev. Diane Gordon will officiate and visitation will be Sunday 4-8 P.M. and Monday 2-8 P.M. with family present 2-4 & 6-8 P.M.

Bernice was born in Alma Michigan October 7, 1907 the daughter of Fred & Mae (Woodman) Clark. She resided most of her life in the Ashley area and graduated from Ashley High School with the class of 1927. She was married to J. Bruce Gallup in Lansing Michigan on June 29, 1930, Bruce died August 6, 1986. Bernice was a homemaker who enjoyed cooking & baking, and canning, she loved music and enjoyed dancing, and camping & fishing at Houghton Lake and Drummond Island and working in her flower garden. She was a member of Ashley United Methodist Church and the Rebekah Lodge in Alma, Life member of Gratiot County Extension Club, Carson City Hospital Auxiliary, and the Sunshine Club.

Survivors include her daughter Karleen “ Ki ‘ Sproat, of Ashley, Michigan, 1 grandson, Scott B. Sproat of Ashley, Michigan, 1 niece, Betty Weber of Rockford, Michigan. She was predeceased by her parents, husband, half brother Merle Clark & a niece, Kathleen Rousseau.
Memorials may be made to, Ashley United Methodist Church or Commission on Aging or Senior Activity Building in Ithaca in her memory. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel.

Bessie M. Straight

Bessie M. Straight, Lansing, MI Born February 13, 1924, in St. Johns, Michigan; died June 17, 2005, at the age of 81.

Surviving are her daughters, Peggy McElroy of Lansing and Charlene (Fred) McCready of Hessel, Michigan; sons, Douglas (Pam) Straight of Charlotte, Michigan and Roy (Sharon) Straight of St. Johns, Michigan; 4 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren. Bessie was preceded in death by her husband, Charles.

Graveside Services will be held Tuesday, June 21, 2005, at 11:00 a.m., at Delta Center Cemetery, Lansing, Michigan. The family will receive friends at the Gorsline-Runciman Co., Lansing Chapel, 900 E. Michigan Ave., Lansing, on Monday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family request that contributions be made to Hospice of Mid-Michigan, 1210 W. Saginaw, Lansing, Michigan 48915 in memory of Bessie.

Lillian E. Urbanek

Lillian E. Urbanek passed away June 16, 2005 at the age of 96. Born in Poland on December 5, 1908, the daughter of Anthony and Stella (Balcerzak) Wolniewicz. She was a homemaker, a member of the Rosary Society and Felician Sisters at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Wyandotte. Lillian married Joseph Urbanek in Toledo, Ohio on October 15, 1928 and he preceded her in death.

Surviving are her children, Mary Ann Brown of Texas, Eugene J. Urbanek of Newport, MI and Fr. Ray Urbanek of Ovid, grandchildren, Karen Hathorn, Paul Urbanek, Paulene McGinn, Tamara Malo, Tony Urbanek, Barbara Castalde and Barry Urbanek, 11 great grandchildren, one great great grandchild, brothers, Joseph Wolniewicz and Chester Wolniewicz, both of Ohio, and sisters, Mary Cox and Theresa Baranski, both of Ohio. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by son, Stephen Urbanek and three brothers, Floyd, Stanley and Stephen Wolniewicz.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11:00 A.M. Monday, June 20, 2005 at Holy Family Catholic Church, 620 N. Mabbit Rd., Ovid with the Rev. Fr. Ray Urbanek officiating. Burial will be at Mount Carmel Cemetery in Wyandotte, MI. The family will receive friends 6-8 P.M. Saturday, 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Sunday at the Houghton Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes, 232 E. Oak St., Ovid with a rosary prayed 7 P.M. Sunday. Sympathy may be expressed in the form of memorials to Holy Family Catholic Church.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, June 18, 2005 at 11:00 AM at St. Cyril's Catholic Church Bannister, MI. Rev. Fr. Wolfgang Streichardt will officiate with burial at Ford Cemetery Elsie, Michigan. Visitation will be held on Friday, June 17, 2005 from 2-8 P.M. with family present 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. at the funeral home. Rosary will be prayed Friday, June 17, 2005 at 6:00 P.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel.

Nelson was born in Detroit, MI on August 24, 1937 the son of Otis & Rose ( Pontack ) Viles. He resided most of his life in the Ashley & Elsie areas. He graduated from Ashley High School with the class of 1955. Nelson married Margaret Ann Barrett on April 18, 1959 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Carson City, MI. Nelson served in the U.S. Army. He retired from GM Lansing, MI in 1993 after 32 years of service. He enjoyed farming, and his grandchildren where very important to him. He was a member of St. Cyrils Catholic Church, Bannister, MI.

He is survived by his wife Margaret Wilson of Elsie, MI, 4 daughters; Faye & Rafi Ayoubi of Clayton, NC, Carol Wilson of Elsie, MI, Peggy & Carl Luce of Owosso, MI, Wendy & Dale Young of Carson City, MI, 1 son Roy Wilson of Mason, MI, 8 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, 3 sisters; Rosalie & Fred Sanford of Alma, MI, Joanne & Tony Kusnier of Elsie, MI, Mildred & Jim Ribarchik of Swartz Creek, MI, 2 brothers; Paul & Judy Viles of Grand Ledge, MI, Otis & Lorraine Viles Jr. of Ashley, MI, also survived by aunts, uncles, and cousins. He is predeceased by his parents, and 2 grandsons Bryan & Jamiel. Memorials may be made to: American Cancer Society, or Sparrow Hopital, Jerome Street Guest House.
