Lorenia A. Beachler

beachler_lorenia.jpg (5096 bytes)Lorenia A. Beachler passed away on Monday, July 18, 2005 at the age of 85. She was born May 6, 1920 in Elsie, MI the daughter of Benjamin and Lorenia (Coates) Hayes. She was a member of the former Price United Methodist Church, a former 4-H leader, a member of the Independent Order of Foresters, and was the manager of the former Randall Health Food Store in St. Johns. Lorenia married John Beachler on June 30, 1940 and he preceded her in death. Also preceding her in death was a grandson, Nathan Beachler.

Surviving is one daughter, Lorenia K. (Erick) Richards of St. Johns; two sons, Richard L. Beachler of Trenton, MI, David L. (Linda) Beachler of St. Johns; 12 grand children; 23 great grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at the Pilgrim United Methodist Church, 2965 W. Parks Rd. St. Johns on Sunday, July 24th at 2:00 P.M. with Rev. Merlin Pratt and Rev. Robert Prange officiating. Memorials may be made to WKAR Radio & TV, 283 Communication Arts Building, East Lansing, MI 48824 or Clinton County 4-H 100 E. State St. Suite G 100, St. Johns, MI 48879. Arrangements and service was provided by Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, 1500 Waterford Parkway, St. Johns.

Shirley M. Huntoon

Funeral services will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel on Wednesday, July 20, 2005 at 11:00 A.M. Visitation will be Tuesday, 2-8 P.M. with family present 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. and burial will take place at Ford Cemetery, Gratiot County, Michigan.

Shirley was born in Detroit, Michigan on September 24, 1934 the daughter of Frederick & Neomi ( Blodgett ) Bredow. On June 2, 1952 she married Lyle Huntoon in New Mexico, she resided most of her life in Ovid & Owosso area. She was affiliated with the German Lutheran faith and she retired from Memorial Healthcare Center from the housekeeping department and she enjoyed camping and truly loved her family.

Survivors include her husband, Lyle Huntoon of Ovid, Michigan, 3 daughters, Julie & Ed Crackel of Owosso, Michigan, Teresa & Jim Borton of Elsie, Michigan, Bonnie & Bob Harper of Owosso, Michigan, 2 sons, Fred & Robin Huntoon of Ovid, Michigan, Lyle & Angie Huntoon of St. Johns, Michigan, 18 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild, 3 sisters & 3 brothers and many nieces & nephews. She was predeceased by her parents 1 sister & 3 brothers. Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.

The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie chapel.

Tom Paksi

Paksi-Tom.jpg (16892 bytes)Tom Paksi died July 13, 2005 at the age of 82. He was born in Pompeii, MI on March 4, 1923, the son of Adam and Anna (Vandlik) Paksi and lived most of his life in Ovid. Tom graduated from Ashley High School in 1942, was a U.S. Navy veteran, and retired from Federal Mogul in 1980. He loved all outdoor sports, especially trapping. He married Mary Deming in Ithaca on April 24, 1943 and she survives him.

Also surviving are three sons, James (Donna) Paksi of St. Johns, Ronald (Connie) Paksi of Ovid, and John (Karen) Paksi of Fruitport, MI, two daughters, Jane (Terry) Cressman of Muskegon and Judy (Dan) Cerveny of Owosso, 11 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, one great great grandchild, two brothers, Ed (Mary Ann) Paksi of Higgins Lake and Bob (Charlotte) Paksi of Ashley, and one sister, Ann (Lon) Green of White Cloud. He was preceded in death by three brothers, John, Steve & Joe Paksi.

Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M. Saturday, July 16, 2005 at the Houghton Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes, Ovid, burial at Maple Grove Cemetery with Rev. Rob McPherson officiating. The family will receive friends 6-8 P.M. Thursday and 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the United Church of Ovid or the American Red Cross Mid-Michigan Chapter, Corunna.

Margaret M. Brya

Brya-Margaret.jpg (11086 bytes)Margaret M. Brya died July 13, 2005 at the age of 86. Born October 20, 1918 in Fowler, the daughter of William and Teresa (Wacker) Fox. Margaret was a member of St. Mary’s Cathedral of Lansing, had been a volunteer at Clinton Memorial Hospital and managed the family dairy farm until retiring in 1975. She and Louis enjoyed many fun times at their cottage at Higgins Lake. They wintered in Texas where Margaret learned a new craft every year and would come home to share her new craft with family and friends. Margaret traveled extensively throughout the U.S. building a collection of spoons with each new stop. She was a people person, enjoying meeting new people of all ages. She loved playing cards, crafts of all kinds, playing the slot machines and was an excellent cook. She will be sadly missed by her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, brothers, sister, nieces and nephews. Margaret married Louis A. Brya on May 4, 1940 and he preceded her in death on November 6, 2003 after 63 years of marriage. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Agnes “Aggie” Arthur.

She is survived by five children, Terrance (Susan) Brya , Douglas (Donna) Brya, James (Patricia) Brya, Kenneth Brya and Linda (Jerald) McCool all of St. Johns, 14 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, two brothers, Robert (Mary) Fox and Bernard (Marie) Fox, all of St. Johns and one sister, Virginia (Eiseler) Zimmer of Higgins Lake.

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:00 A.M. Saturday, July 16, 2005 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in St. Johns, burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery with Msgr. George Michalek from St. Mary’s parish officiating. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Thursday and Friday at the Osgood Funeral Home with a rosary prayed 7 P.M. Friday. Family requests donations be made to St. Joseph Catholic School, Make A Wish Foundation or a charity of one’s choice. A special thank you to the caring staff at Hazel Findlay.

Rita E. Maier

maier_rita.jpg (4303 bytes)Rita Maier died July 10, 2005 at the age of 78. She was born in St. Johns on February 13, 1927, the daughter of Floyd and Rosina (Ballou) Parish. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Ladies Altar Society and was a volunteer at Hazel Findlay Country Manor. Rita married Clare Maier on January 2, 1946 and he preceded her in death on May 25, 1995.

Surviving are three sons, Thomas (Kathy) Maier of Manistee, Terry (Martha) Maier of Perrinton, and Timothy (Anna) Maier of Maple Rapids, three daughters, Barbara (Robert) Harte, Cindy (Michael) Keilen, and Karen (Mark) Smith, all of St. Johns, nineteen grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, and one brother, William (Ethel) Parish of Minnesota. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Nancy Maier and one sister, Elizabeth Pohl.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:30 A.M. Thursday, July 14, 2005 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery with the Rev. Fr. Tim MacDonald officiating. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Tuesday and Wednesday at the Osgood Funeral Home with a rosary prayed 7 P.M. Wednesday. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Christopher C. Kemp

Christopher C. Kemp,  Laingsburg, MI Age 40, died on Saturday July 9, 2005 at Sparrow Hospital, Lansing. He was born on April 24, 1965 in Lansing to Bill and Pat (Matthews) Kemp. Chris graduated from Laingsburg High School, Class of 1983. He was a cadet member of the Civil Air Patrol for 5 years and loved flying model planes and rockets.

He is survived by a special friend, Michelle Kemp-Hubbel; his son, Michael Kemp-Hubbel; parents, Bill and Pat Kemp of Laingsburg; brothers, Bill (Vicki) Kemp of Dewitt, Phillip Kemp of Holland and Randy (Janet) Kemp of Mt. Sterling, OH; and a special cousin, Nancy Quinn.

Funeral services will be on Friday July 15, 2005 at 12 noon at the Watkins Brothers Funeral Home in Laingsburg with Pastor Cayle Beagle officiating. Visitation will be on Thursday July 14, 2005 from 6-8:30 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, a scholarship fund has been set up for his son Michael.

Carol M. Slagh

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Cyril's Catholic Church Bannister, MI on Wednesday, July 13, 2005 at 11:00 AM. Rev. Fr. Wolfgang Streichardt will officiate with burial at Riverside Cemetery Elsie, Michigan. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 12, 2005 from 2-8 P.M. with family present 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. Rosary will be prayed Tuesday Evening, July 12, 2005 at 6:00 P.M. at the funeral home.

Carol was born in Sebawing, Michigan on May 11, 1910 the daughter of William and Catherine ( Bruce ) Deegan. She graduated from Sebawing High School with the class of 1928. She also graduated from Bay City Mercy Hospital Nursing Program. Carol married Dr. Earl Slagh on December 28, 1937 in Sebawing, Michigan. He died December 25, 1989. She resided most of her life in Elsie, Michigan. She was a homemaker and a nurse. She volunteered for Red Cross Blood Drives and she was the orginist for St. Cyril's Catholic Church for 40 years. Carol was a member of St. Cyril's Catholic Church, Bannister, MI, the Altar Society & Elsie Literary Club.

She is survived by her daughter Kathryn Olson of Ovid, MI, son Michael Slagh of Queensland, Australia, daughter Mary Slagh of Datona Beach, FL, 4 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, parents, 1 sister and 2 brothers.

Memorials may be made in lieu of flowers to the donor's favorite charity, Elsie Public Library, or to St. Cyril's Catholic Church. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel.

Caroline C. Britten

Memorial services will be held at St. Martin De Porres Catholic Church, Perrinton, Michigan on Friday, July 15, 2005 at 11:00 A.M. There will be no visitation. Sister Margo Tafoya will officiate and burial will take place in Mt. Rest Cemetery, St. Johns, Michigan.

Caroline was born on November 3, 1905 in Anaconda, Montana, the daughter of Michael & Mary (Badovinac) Popovich. In 1945 she married Lewis Britten and he predeceased her in 1978. She worked as a cook and baker at Maple Rapids School for many years and is remembered for her homemade cinnamon rolls and cookies. She was also a nurse’s aid at Clinton Memorial Hospital and retired in 1971 and resided most of her life in Maple Rapids, Michigan and was a member of St. Martin De Porres Catholic Church, Perrinton, Michigan. She was also a former Blue Star Member.

Survivors are a daughter, Althea Smith of St. Johns, Michigan, 2 sons, Dick & Mary Jo Stephens of Jackson, Michigan, Bob & Marylin Stephens of Maple Rapids, Michigan, 23 grandchildren, 39 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren, 3 sisters, Louise, Mary & Alice. She was predeceased by her parents, daughter, Deloris McCarthy, step daughter, Louise Salisbury, step son, Bob Britten, son in laws, Bill Smith, Russell McCarthy, Lloyd Salisbury, daughter in law, Bea Stephens. Memorials may be made to St. Martin De Porres Catholic Church, Perrinton, Michigan. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Johns Chapel.

Doris M. Flanner

flanner_doris.jpg (4709 bytes)Doris M. Flanner died July 8, 2005 at the age of 70. Born in Lansing on October 19, 1934, the daughter of Ralph and Eva (Powers) Thomas. She retired from the Lear Corporation in Elsie, a member of Laingsburg Baptist Church and U.A.W. Local #1660. Doris married Robert Flanner in St. Johns on October 28, 1960 and he survives her.

Also surviving are her children, Linda (William) Cook, Gene (Tonya) Bancroft and Steve Bancroft, grandchildren, Bridget (Scott) Barratt, Rusty (Toni) Cook, Ron (Heather) Bancroft, Dennis (Jenny) Cronin, Sean (Jessica) Maxson, Rob Bancroft, Steve Jr. (Misty) Bancroft, Cassandra (Jake) Jorae, Jeremiah Bancroft and Jeffrey Bancroft, great grandchildren, Taylor & Christina Barratt, Peyton Bancroft, Alise & Alexis Cronin, Alyssia & Blake Maxson, Steven, Peirce & CoraLee Bancroft, Hailey & Robert Bancroft, Jesse Wenzlick, Joshua Wenzlick, Jordan Wenzlick and Dylan Cook, four sisters, Norma Peterson, Florence Hopkins, Helen (Mike) Daley & Hazel (Glenn) Rodgers, one brother, John (Kathy) Thomas, and several nieces & nephews. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Terry Bancroft, son, Ralph Bancroft and her first husband, Orson Bancroft.

Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, July 13, 2005 at the Houghton Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes, 232 E. Oak St., Ovid, burial at Maple Grove Cemetery with Pastor Steven Brown officiating. The family will receive friends 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. Monday and Tuesday at the funeral home.

Judith A. Haskins,  64, retired Central Soya (Portland) employee, died Friday. Services 10 a.m. Monday at Osgood Funeral Homes, Abbott Chapel, Maple Rapids.

Chester Urie

Chester Urie, Crystal, MI Age 52, passed away Friday, July 8, 2005, after a good fight with cancer, at his home with his family at his side. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 13 at 11 a.m. at Pine Grove Church with Pastor Charles Dalton officiating. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Muir. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 10 a.m. until time of services at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Urie Family. Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Lux and Schnepp Funeral Home, Crystal.

Chet was born January 24, 1953 in Carson City, the son of Chester E. and Ruth Anna (Foster) Urie. He grew up in the Lansing area and was married to Carol Blumberg on December 7, 1974. He worked as a well driller all his life from the time he was 4 years old with his father until his health prevented him from working. He had currently been working for MKC Group in Mt. Pleasant and had worked for Layne Northern, Hart and Geiger Well Drilling. He was a member of Pine Grove Church.

He is survived by his wife Carol; two sons, Chadwick (Jessica) Urie and Casey Urie; two daughters, Latonia (Joshua) Estill and Laura (Robert) Reed all of Crystal; 8 grandchildren; two sisters, Anna (Ron) Showers of St. Johns and Mary Neumeister of Lansing; two brothers, John (Barbara) Urie of Mt. Pleasant and James (Debbie) Urie of Mason; mother-in-law, Betty Blumberg of Ionia; two half sisters and brother, Jeannette Urie of Carson City, Angela Feily of Ohio, and Roland Urie of Riverdale; stepbrothers and sisters, Larry Heiler and John Heiler both of Saranca, Vesta Harder of Carson City, Luann Jones of Crystal, Irene Heiler of Stanton, Theresa Heiler of Tennessee, Betty Pathfinder of Lansing, and Artith (Jim) Florian of Florida; and many caring nieces and nephews. Chet was preceded in death by his father, Chester E. Urie, Sr.; mother, Ruth Anna Kennedy; stepmother, Alma Heiler Urie; stepfather, Art Kennedy; and father-in-law, Ted Blumberg.

M. Elaine Dunckel

M. Elaine Dunckel,  Lansing, MI Born May 16, 1910, in Detroit. She died peacefully with her children at her side July 6, 2005, at the age of 95. Elaine was an active member of Pilgrim Congregational Church UCC, Lansing, a former President of the Women's Fellowship at the First Congregational Church, St. Johns and had been a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution for 49 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne, son, David Dunckel, and brother, George Dexter.

Surviving are her sons, Nelson (Muriel) Dunckel of Mankato, MN and Roger (Barbara) Dunckel of Ferndale, MI; 9 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; and sister, Helen Hoag of Westland, MI.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 9, at noon at Pilgrim Congregational Church UCC, 125 S. Pennsylvania Ave., Lansing, with the Rev. Beth Grimshaw, Minister of Discipleship, officiating. Interment will follow in Rowley Cemetery, Williamston. The family will receive friends at the Church on Saturday 1-hour prior to the service. Those desiring may make contributions to the Hospice House of Mid-Michigan, c/o Sparrow Hospice Services, P. O. Box 30480, Lansing, MI 48909-9986 or to Pilgrim Congregational Church UCC, in memory of Mrs. Dunckel. The family is being served by the Gorsline-Runciman Co. Lansing Chapel, Lansing.

Mary A. (Miller) Stowell

Mary A. (Miller) Stowell,  58, formerly of Lansing, State Bar of Michigan executive secretary, died Sunday. Memorial services noon Saturday at Gorsline-Runciman Lansing Chapel.

Marvel A. Paddock

Marvel A. Paddock,  St. Johns, MI Marvel A. Paddock died July 5, 2005, at the age of 65. Born in Lansing on March 9, 1940, the daughter of Marvin and Adella (Galvin) Foster. She was a homemaker, a nurses aide at Rivard's Nursing Home, a sales clerk for Jacobson's and worked for Jackson Record Stamping in Owosso. Marvel enjoyed her flowers and playing bingo. She married Charlie Paddock at Towar Gardens Baptist Church on August 3, 1957 and he survives her.

Also surviving are her children, Charles (Julie) Paddock of Ovid, David Paddock of St. Johns and Gary (Julie) Paddock of Durand; grandchildren, Mitchell Paddock, Christine Paddock, Rebecca Long, Gregory Paddock, Tyler Mattimore, Ryan Paddock and Kaylyn Paddock; siblings, Dolly (John) Sherman of Lansing, Wanda Fernandez of North Carolina, Neil (Betty) Foster of Laingsburg, Gary Foster and Kathy (Norton) Barrett, all of Lansing. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday, July 9, 2005 at the Osgood Funeral Home, 104 E. Cass Street, St. Johns, MI; burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Thursday and 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
