Frederick G. Meyer

meyer_fred.jpg (4281 bytes)Frederick Gail Meyer passed away with his family at his side on Tuesday August 30, 2005 at the age of 84. He was born September 28, 1920 in Houghton MI the son of Frederick C. and Gail (Retelle) Meyer. A graduate of Houghton High School he received a BS in Metallurgical Engineering from Michigan Tech Univ. in 1946. He excelled in hockey and was the goal tender for the MTU Huskies throughout his college days. He married Mary Diedrick in Chassell, MI on June 22, 1946.

Fred enlisted in the US Army Air Corps in February 1943 and served in England as a Captain in the 8th Air Force 385th Bomb Group 551st Bomb Squad. He was active in many offensive campaigns in Normandy, France, Rhineland, Central Europe and Ardennes. He participated in food drops over the Netherlands in the spring of 1945. He fulfilled a long time dream in July of 2005 with his visit to the National World War II Memorial in Washington, DC, a trip arranged and donated by Volunteer Mercy Pilots of Grand Ledge.

He was employed by Federal Mogul Corporation in Greenville in 1947 and later transferred to the St. Johns plant as Chief Metallurgist, retiring in 1982. After his retirement Fred worked at The Treasure Chest, the family gift shop. He worked almost daily until recently. Fred was an avid sports fan, particularly the Detroit Lions, The St. Johns Redwings and Tiger Woods. He could often be found playing golf at The Emerald Golf Course (and the former Clinton County Country Club of which he was a member since 1948). Some of the happiest times of his life were times spent with his golf friends, especially in later years.

Fred served on the St. Johns Board of Education from 1960 – 1976 and played an active role in the building of St. Johns High School. Fred was staunch in his determination to get a swimming pool included in the building of the high school. He was founder, coach and record keeper of the St. Johns Sea Lions age group swim team, teaching hundreds of area children competitive swimming and instilling in them the results of hard work and determination. In 2004 the St. Johns School Board honored him by dedicating the high school pool as The Fred Meyer Natatorium. Fred has left a legacy to young swimmers in the St. Johns area.

He was a veteran of WWII, a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus since 1948. He was active in the church, serving as an usher and lector. His faith in God lived in him until the end of his life.
