Doris Jane Fox

fox_doris.jpg (4818 bytes)Doris Jane Fox,  Lansing, MI died October 25, 2005, at age 83. She was born July 12, 1922. Doris was raised in Fowler, MI where she graduated from high school. She attended Nazareth College and worked at Auto Owners Insurance Company as an executive secretary for 23 years. She was a past member of St. Mary's Cathedral in Lansing. She resided at St. Lawrence Dimondale Nursing Home for several years. Family and friends will always remember her wonderful storytelling and the poetry she wrote.

Doris is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Karen (Pohl) and Barry Knight; and family members, Mary Ann (Jim) Fabiano, Ellen (Bob) Smith, Joe (Pam) Fox, Jane (Mike) Quintieri, Judy (Mike) Leftwich, and Margaret Ann (Darrell) Adair.

Visitation is from 6-8 p.m. Thursday with a 7:00 p.m. Vigil service in the Tiffany Funeral Home, 3232 W. Saginaw. Funeral Liturgy is 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 28, at St. Gerard Catholic Church, 4437 W. Willow, with Fr. Matt Fedewa presiding. Viewing will be from 10:30 to 11:00 a.m. Friday at church. Rite of committal will be 2:00 p.m. Friday at Most Holy Trinity Cemetery in Fowler, MI.

The family would like to thank the many caregivers at St. Lawrence Dimondale and the staff of Hospice House of Mid-Michigan-St. Lawrence Campus. Also a special thanks to April, Michelle, and Stella for all of their support and love. Contributions may be made to the Hospice House of Mid-Michigan, St. Lawrence Campus, 1210 W. Emerson K. Stockwell, Sr.

stockwell_emerson.jpg (4120 bytes)Emerson K. Stockwell, Sr. died October 26, 2005 at the age of 87. Born in St. Johns on May 17, 1918, the son of Leonard and Bessie (Grubaugh) Stockwell. He was a retired General Motors employee, owner of Stockwell Gravel and member of Lowe United Methodist Church. Emerson married Betty Cook on September 15, 1945 and she preceded him in death on September 11, 2004.

Surviving are his children, Mattie (Jim) Schnepp, Emerson (Donna) Stockwell, Jr., Karen Stockwell and Danny (Jackie) Stockwell, 13 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, sister, Leona Rumbaugh and brother, Oscar (Mae) Stockwell. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by granddaughter, Angie Stockwell and sister, Ethel Sutliff.

Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M. Saturday, October 29, 2005 at the Osgood Funeral Home, burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery with Pastor O’Ryan Rickard officiating. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Friday at the funeral home. Sympathy may be expressed in the form of memorials to the Laurels of Fulton. Lloyd J. "Bud" Welch Jr.

welch_lloyd.jpg (4164 bytes)Lloyd J. Welch Jr., 75 of St. Johns died Oct. 23, 2005. He was born Sept 25, 1930 in St. Johns the son of Lloyd J. Welch Sr. and Leah H. Stevens Welch.   Lloyd worked as a painter for Reo in Lansing until it closed then was a self-employed painter.

He is suurvived by his daughter Cynthia & Steven Lazaroff of Lansing and his son Lloyd A. Welch of St. Johns, 6 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren, a sister Carol & Darrell Andrus of Alanson, MI and a brother Kenneth & Maryann Welch of St. Johns, and former daughter-in-law Ronda Welch of St. Johns.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2005 at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, 10:30 A.M.. with Rev. Steve Weinberger
officiating. The family will receive friends 2-4 & 7-9 P.M. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Rev. Gordon S. Showers

Rev. Gordon S. Showers,  Grand Rapids, MI formerly of St. Johns, MI The prayers of his family were answered when, after several years of failing health, especially the last six months, Gordon S. Showers entered his Heavenly Home on Sunday, October 23, 2005. He was a loving husband to his wife Leulla, for sixty-nine years. He was also a faithful servant of his Lord in the ministry of the West Michigan Conference of the United Methodist Church for thirty-six years.

Gordon was born in Gratiot County, MI, on January 1, 1909. His growing up years were spent in Lakeview, Montcalm County, MI. After his retirement from active ministry in 1975, he and Leulla lived in St. Johns, MI and volunteered with Christian service projects for several years working with the Roving Volunteers in Christ's Service. In 1995 Gordon and Luella moved to Clark Retirement Home in Grand Rapids, where he continued his volunteer ministry, especially in the skilled care unit. Gordon's life was spent in a loving devoted service to his family, the churches he served and his family and friends.

Gordon is also survived by his two daughters, Judith (Gordon) Vandemark and Susan (Wayne) Roberts; his son, Rev. David Showers; his friend, Bruce Calvin; seven grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. 

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church, with an hour of visitation before the service from 10 to 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Clark Retirement Community Foundation or First United Methodist Church of Grand Rapids. The family is being served by Metcalf & Jonkhoff Funeral Service, Grand Rapids, MI 616-940-7333.

Janet Mary (Doyle) Swanson

swanson_janet.jpg (5290 bytes)Janet Mary (Doyle) Swanson passed away suddenly on October 22, 2005 at the age of forty-five after suffering a brain aneurysm. Born on August 24, 1960 to Gaylord and Rita (Stackpole) Doyle in St. Johns, she was a 1979 graduate of St. Johns High School and a 1999 graduate of the Douglas J Academy of Cosmetology. Co-owner of the 21 East Hair Design in St. Johns, she resided the last twenty-two years at their home near Maple Rapids, Michigan.

On September 24, 1983 Janet married her husband Trevor, who survives her. She is also survived by their two teenage children, Rachel and Kurt, both residing at home, a brother Dr. Thomas (Julie) Doyle of DeWitt, sisters, Beth (Dave) Steadman of Haslett and Carol (Dan) Lowe of rural St. Johns, parents-in-law David and Maria Swanson of rural Maple Rapids, along with numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Gaylord and Rita Doyle.

An avid fan of motorcycling, Janet and Trevor traveled frequently throughout Michigan on weekend trips with their informal group, the Supper Club. Last summer they traveled with their friends throughout the Adirondack Mountains of New York and the Green Mountains of Vermont. Her children, her flowerbeds and her home were her particular pride and joy. Her other interests included gardening, homemaking and furniture refinishing. Her home cooked meals and holiday treats were enjoyed by many. She assisted the Drama Program at Fulton High School by doing hair and makeup. As an organ donor, Janet’s generosity has given many people a second opportunity at life.

Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Thursday, October 27, 2005 at the First Church of God, 1063 S. DeWitt Rd., St. Johns, with the Rev. Paul Daniels officiating. Burial will be at the tree shaded Sowle Cemetery, across the field from her rural home. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Tuesday and Wednesday at the Abbott Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes, 509 E. Main St., Maple Rapids. Sympathy may be expressed in the form of memorials to the family.

Gladys Louise Herron

Funeral services will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel on Wednesday, October 26, 2005 at 11:00 A.M. Burial will take place at Riverside Cemetery, Elsie Michigan, Mr. Alex McClelland will officiate and visitation will be on Monday 6-8 P.M and Tuesday 2-8 P.M. with family present 2-4 & 6-8 P.M.

Gladys was born in St. Johns, Michigan on December 4, 1928 the daughter of Albert & Alice (Gibson) Craven, she graduated from Elsie High School with the class of 1947 and resided most of her life in the Elsie area. On August 23, 1947 she married Ralph Herron at her parents home in Elsie, Michigan. Ralph predeceased her on April 19, 2000. Gladys had managed Bing’s Bar in Elsie for a number of owners over a 25 year period. She was a life member of the Ladies Auxiliary Post 9455 in Owosso and was very active. She also enjoyed playing bingo.

Survivors include 1 daughter, Sharon Herron of Elsie, Michigan, 1 son, Dennis & Judy Herron of Arkansas, 2 granddaughters, Denise & Brent Bratcher of Virginia, Alice Jorgensen & fiancé Tim Tattersall of Corunna, Michigan, 1 grandson, James Herron who is stationed with the US Navy in Kuwait, 6 great grandchildren, Cody, Caleb, Claudia, Aurora, Natasha & Ericka. She was predeceased by her parents, husband, 1 granddaughter Amy Jo, 2 sisters & 2 brothers. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Gaylord Donald Schavey

shavey_gaylord.jpg (3333 bytes)Gaylord Donald Schavey,  Lake, MI formerly of DeWitt, MI Loving husband and devoted father, born November 15, 1917 in St. Johns, Michigan; deceased October 22, 2005 at the age of 87. He was a World War II veteran (D-Day) with the 3rd Armored Division in Northern France. He was a Purple Heart recipient. Gaylord retired from Motor Wheel in 1977 after 32 years of service. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 3039 in Farwell and a member of D.A.V. Wilson & Blackmer Chapter 105 in Lake, MI. He also enjoyed fishing, yard work, gardening and wood working. Gaylord is preceded in death by his parents, Frederick and Edna (Bartlett) Schavey; sisters, Dorothy Carter and Viola Overfield; and brother, Theodore Schavey.

Survivors include his wife, Marie Evelyn (Smith) Schavey; daughter, Karen Schavey of Lansing; sons, Dennis (Tina) Schavey of Holmes Bench, FL, Ronald Schavey of East Lansing; 6 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; brother, Lewis (Edith) Schavey of St. Johns; sisters, Vera Ward of Kingsley, Mabel Beck of Maple Rapids, Mildred Roof of St. Johns; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, October 26, 2005 at 12:00 p.m. at Gorsline-Runciman Co., Lansing Chapel, 900 E. Michigan Ave., Lansing, with Pastor Ed Short of Northpoint Community Church officiating. Interment will follow in DeWitt Cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives at the chapel on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the VFW National Home for Children, 3573 S. Waverly Rd., Eaton Rapids, MI 48827, in memory of Mr. Gaylord D. Schavey.

Barbara A. Scott

scott_barbara.jpg (3785 bytes)Barbara A. Scott,   Charlotte, MI Age 72, passed away Thursday, October 20, 2005 in Lansing, Michigan. Barbara was born April 21, 1933 in St. Johns, Michigan, the daughter of Richard and Lois (Brown) Woodbury. She worked for MSU Credit Union as a Senior Accounting Specialist for 27 years.

Barbara is survived by her loving husband, Gordy, of 30 years. Also surviving are eleven children, Kent, Wayne, Sandy (Clarence), Barry (Mary), Jeff (Kathy), Curtis (Pam), Cindy, Cheryl, Donald (Mary), Colleen, Christine (Mike); three sisters, Betty (Lee) Kellogg, Donna (Clifford) Snyder, Phyllis Studer; eleven grandchildren; two great grandchildren and one in the oven. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother-in-law, Les Studer.

Memorial services will be held Monday, October 24, 2005 at 3:00 p.m. at Palmer, Bush & Jensen Family Funeral Homes, Lansing Chapel with Pastor David Brook officiating. Inurnment will be at Eureka Cemetery. The family will receive friends, Monday 2:00 p.m. until memorial service time. Josette M. Fitzgerald

fitzgerald_josette.jpg (5049 bytes)Josette M. Fitzgerald,  Lansing, MI Age 93, passed away Thursday, October 20, 2005. Born March 7, 1912, the daughter of Peter and Elizabeth Trierweiler, in Westphalia, MI. Josette held her first job as a seamstress at the Portland Shirt Factory. She soon became a clerk at Johnny Bengal's Garage and later was a bookkeeper for Lansing Oldsmobile, Bert Howard Co., and with Michigan Millers Insurance Co. She adored her children and grandchildren and loved to watch them learn and grow. Josette has maintained lifelong friendships with fellow parishioners from the Church of the Resurrection where she was active with the Altar Society, League of Catholic Women and the Golden Shamrocks. In retirement, Josette volunteered at Sparrow Hospital, the Red Cross and Meals on Wheels. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph and daughter, Katherine.

She is survived by two daughters, Patricia (Allan) Kosack of Bloomfield Hills, MI, Jean Anne (Steven) Haas of Littleton, CO; two sons, Michael (Betty) Fitzgerald of Plainfield, IL, Joseph Fitzgerald of Camarillo, CA; 10 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.

A Funeral Mass will be read Monday, October 24, at 10:00 a.m. at The Church of the Resurrection, 1531 E. Michigan Ave., Lansing, with interment following at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. The family will receive visitors at the Gorsline-Runciman Co., Lansing Chapel, 900 E. Michigan Ave., Lansing, on Sunday, October 23, from 2-8 p.m., with Rosary at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Sparrow Palliative Care Service, Sparrow Foundation, 1110 E. Michigan Ave., Lansing, MI 48912 in memory of Josette Fitzgerald.

Vivian Nieuwkoop

Vivian Nieuwkoop, former Lansing area resident died Tuesday, October 18, 2005. She was 91. Her husband, Rev. Peter Nieuwkoop had served at the Maranatha Baptist Church in Lansing and the First Baptist Church in St. Johns. Her husband preceded her in death in 2001.

Survivors include a son, Roger (Susan) of Dunedin, FL; a daughter, Jean (Ed) McKeehan of Harper Woods; 7 grandchildren; 12 great and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at the Hall Funeral Chapel in Manton, Michigan on Friday, October 21, 2005 at 1:00 p.m. with burial in Fairview Cemetery, Manton.

William Stanley "Bill" Welton

William Stanley "Bill" Welton, 75, Mineola, died May 5, 2005 at his residence. No services are scheduled at this time. Arrangements are with the Beaty Funeral Home, Mineola, Texas.

Mr. Welton was born May 23, 1929 in St. Johns, Mich., to William and Mary Welton. He was a retired mechanical engineer with Texas Instruments, an Ombudsman volunteer for Wood Memorial Nursing Home and treasurer for Mineola Memorial Library. He served in the Army Air Corp. He was preceded in death by his father William Welton.

Survivors include his wife, Mattie Sue Ramsey Welton, Mineola,Tx., Son, Greg Welton, Nashville, Tenn., daughters Fannetta Welton, Virginia, Deborah Blankenship, Hurst, Tx., Linda Scott, Houston,Tx., Carol Huff, Beaumont, Tx., Mother Mary Welton, St. John's, Mich.,brother Bruce Welton, Elsie, Mich., nine grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
