Funeral Services will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel on Friday, December 23, 2005 at 11:00 AM. Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 22, 2005 from 2-8 P.M. with family present 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Burial will take place on Tuesday, December 27, 2005 at 11:00 A.M at Riverside Cemetery Elsie, Michigan.

Gary was born in Ovid, Michigan on May 25, 1944 the son of Rudolph and Anna ( Demjanovich ) Pokorny. He resided most of his life in the Elsie Area and attended Elsie Schools. He enjoyed painting, NASCAR, and was a big fan of John Deere Tractor. Gary attended Trinity Church in Ovid, MI and was a member of the ZCBJ Lodge in Bannister, MI.

He is survived by one sister Patricia and Oli Cech of Owosso, MI, 5 brothers; Edward and Loretta Pokorny of Elsie, MI, Rudy and Maxine Pokorny of Elsie, MI, Eugene and Alice Pokorny of Owosso, MI, Carl and Jeannie Pokorny of Ovid, MI, Robert Pokorny of Corunna, MI, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents.

Memorials may be made to the ZCBJ Lodge in Bannister, Michigan or Trinity Church in Ovid, Michigan. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel.

Joan Ruth Dean

Joan Ruth Dean age 57 of Belleville, Michigan died Monday, December 19, 2005 at her home.

Funeral Services will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Johns Chapel on Friday, December 23, 2005 at 11:00 AM. Pastor Sharon Janot will officiate with burial at South Bingham Township Cemetery St. Johns, Michigan. Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 22, 2005 from 2-8 P.M. with family present 2-4 and 6-8 P.M.

Joan was born in Lima, Ohio on March 19, 1948 the daughter of John and Eva Lucille ( Wilson ) Dean. She lived in Belleville for the Past 20 years. Joan graduated from Lapeer High School with the class of 1966. She received her Bachelor's Degree in Nursing from M.S.U., Master's Degree in Madison Wisconsin and her Certified Nurse Anesthetist in Parkersburg, West Virginia. She worked at St. Mary Mercy Hospital in Livonia, Michigan as the Director of Perioperative Services. She enjoyed her horses, and sports, ecspecially the Redwings and football. She also enjoyed antiquing, and buying and selling on e-bay. She was also a member of A.N.N.A.

She is survived by her parents John and Lucille Dean of Owosso, MI, one sister Betty and Tom Barks of Dewitt, MI, brother David and Beth Dean of Owosso, MI, Nancy Montague of Bellville, MI, Tony and Rhonda Montague and children, Doris Montague, many nieces and nephews and her employees where she worked.

Memorials may be made to a Scholorship Fund that has been established in her name at St. Mary Mercy Hospital 36475 Five Mile Road, Livonia, Michigan 48154. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Johns Chapel.

Darwin Albert Fett

Darwin Albert Fett age 93 of Owosso, Michigan formerly of the Elsie area died Tuesday, December 20, 2005 at Shiawassee County Medical Care Facility Corunna, MI.

Funeral Services will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel on Thursday, December 22, 2005 at 11:00 AM. Pastor John Downing will officiate with burial at Riverside Cemetery Elsie, Michigan. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 21, 2005 from 2-8 P.M. with family present 2-4 and 6-8 P.M.

Darwin was born in Fresno, California on July 8, 1912 the son of Albert and Sally ( Handlen ) Fett . He resided most of her life in Gratiot and Clinton Counties. Darwin married Helen Slusser on November 8, 1932 in St. Johns, Michigan. He was a retired self-employed Carpenter. He enjoyed fishing and boating.

He is survived by his wife Helen Fett of Owosso, MI, 2 sons; Robert and Barbara Fett of Owosso, MI, Donald and Mary Fett of Spring Lake, MI, daughter-in-law Lorraine Fett of Elsie, MI, 10 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and 5 great great granchildren. He is predeceased by his parents, 2 sons Gilbert and Richard and 7 sisters.

The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel.

Doris Spaulding Odell

spauldingodell.jpg (4049 bytes)Doris Spaulding Odell, Dresden, TN Formerly of Lansing, MI Born May 17, 1923, in Essex Township, Clinton County, MI; died December 16, 2005, at the age of 82. Mrs. Odell had been employed by J.W. Knapp for 38 years retiring in 1980 and was a member of Bethany Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Neita Spaulding.

Surviving are her daughter-in-law, Phyllis (Richard) Fhaner of Dresden, TN; and cousins, Beth Ernst of St. Johns and Alice (Harold) Goodsman of Ypsilanti.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 21, at Noon at the Gorsline-Runciman Funeral Home, 900 E. Michigan Ave., Lansing, with the Rev. James Hixson, of Bethany Baptist Church, officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, Lansing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that those desiring may make contributions to Sparrow Foundation for Rehabilitation Equipment, P. O. Box 30480, Lansing, MI, 48909-9986, or to Sparrow Hospice, P. O. Box 30480, Lansing, MI, 48909-9986, in memory of Mrs. Odell.

Jeremiah Patrick Burns

Jeremiah Patrick Burns,  Hubbardston, MI Passed away on his 87th birthday, Sunday, December 18, 2005 at the Ionia County Memorial Hospital. Jerry was born to John and Julia (Egan) Burns on the family farm in rural North Plains Township, near Hubbardston, where he lived most of his life. He was married to Louise Koenigsknecht on May 8, 1945 at the Most Holy Trinity Church in Fowler, MI. He was a member of St. John The Baptist Church in Hubbardston. Jerry was a World War II Army Veteran. He farmed the family farm and was the rural mail carrier for Hubbardston and Fowler for many years. He had fond memories of his mail route patrons. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He also served on several county and township boards. Jerry loved to play cards and was an avid golfer until his health failed. He also loved to travel. His family was very special to him. During the school years of his 8 sons, he found time to attend nearly every school function in which they were involved. He also was very proud of their accomplishments as grown men.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 60 years, Louise; 7 sons, Dan (Tony) of Fenton, Ed (Martha) of Brighton, Bernie (Terry) of East Lansing, Arnie (Debbi) of Saginaw, Mike (Lynn) of Ann Arbor, Louie (Karen) of Granite Bay, CA, Paul (Carol) of Sanford; one daughter-in-law, Sue Burns of Dimondale; 22 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one brother, Bernard (Helen) of Michigan City, IN; and one sister, Julia (Elmer) Esch of Lansing. He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Mark, four brothers, and one sister.

Visitation will be at the Lux and Schnepp Funeral Home in Carson City on Wednesday, December 21st from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Rosary will be at 7:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held Thursday, December 22nd at St. John The Baptist Church, Hubbardston at 11:00 a.m. with Father William Koenigsknecht officiating. Interment will be in the St. John The Baptist Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Knights of Columbus Charity Fund.

Ron M. Prowant

Ron M. Prowant died Sunday, December 18, 2005 at the age of 50. Born October 20, 1955 in St. Johns to Edgar and Marie (Georgia) Prowant, Ron had been a dispatcher for Dana Corporation and an employee there for thirty years. Ron also loved music and played drums in several different bands.

Ron is survived by his daughter Jordan (Casey) Messer; grandson, Kahnen; mother, Marie Smith; father Edgar (Beverly) Prowant; two brothers, Michael Ludwick all of St. Johns and twin brother, Jon Prowant of Ovid. He was preceded in death by a brother, Sam Prowant.

There will be no visitation or services. The family is being served by the Osgood Funeral Home, St. Johns.

Rose Koshko

Rose Koshko, age 74, died Sunday, December 18, 2005. Born May 14, 1931 in St. Johns, Michigan the daughter of John and Mary (Charnota) Koshko, Rose was an L.P.N., formerly a home health nurse and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Rose is survived by two sisters, Ann Brown and Marie Plaza, both of St. Johns; brother, Steve Spess of Saginaw, and several nieces and nephews. Rose was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Frederick John Koshko, Jr., USMC during the Korean War and three sisters, Elaine Koshko, and two infant sisters.

Funeral Services will be 2:30 PM, Tuesday, December 20, 2005 at Osgood Funeral Home, 104 E. Cass Street, St. Johns, MI with the Rev. Fr. Eoin Murphy officiating. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 1:00 PM until Service time. Interment will be in Mt. Rest Cemetery. Sympathy may be expressed in the form of memorials to New Passages, 6040 Loretta, Lansing, MI 48911 or Eureka House 7808 Fremont St., Eureka, MI 48833.

John O. Shelton

shelton_john.jpg (3859 bytes)John O. Shelton a loving father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle, and friend. John age 89, of St. Johns, passed away at home on December 15, 2005. He was born March 7, 1916 in Springport, Michigan to Alonzo and Mable (Pepper) Shelton. He resided most of his life in Ann Arbor, though he spent his last 15 years in St. Johns, MI. He celebrated life with his loving wife Agnes for 57 years.

A sportsman all his life, John graduated from Parma High School with the class of 1935, and was a member of the 1934 state champion team in football, earning the distinction as the “best pulling guard in the state of Michigan” by the Detroit News. He went on to play football at Michigan State Normal College until injuring his achilles tendon.

John received a degree in Mortuary Science in 1940 from Wayne State University. Upon graduating he worked as a funeral director for 9 years until developing an allergy to embalming fluid, though he maintained his licensed, sometimes assisting with preparations and in 1990 received an award for 50 years of licensing. John attended the Ford Trade School for Tool and Die. He excelled at the trade and worked at Ford, and King Sealy before going to Chrysler, where he retired in 1982. John was an avid outdoorsman, who enjoyed hunting with family and friends, and was a member of Buckmaster’s and the NRA. John’s enjoyment of sports led him to the University of Michigan Athletic Department from 1956-1992, where he worked a variety of venues including football, basketball, hockey, swimming, and baseball. His competitive spirit also showed in his enjoyment of card games, and he was a jubilant cribbage player. He served the country in WW II as a medical surgical nurse in the Army, Pacific Theater. He also participated in the Knights of Columbus, the VFW and the Eagles.

John was preceded in death by his loving wife Agnes (Mynning), sisters; Frieda Winters, Myrtie Bell Cochran and Olive Peck, his brother Hugh, and his daughter-in-law Marie Shelton. Surviving John are son and daughter-in-law Dr. Preston and Anne Shelton, son Brent Shelton, grandchildren; Brent, Todd and wife Tammy, Stephanie, Bridgette and husband Eric, and Lucas; his pride and joy great grandchildren; Kaitlyn and Jason, numerous nieces and nephews, and close friends.

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday, December 21, 2005 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Josephs Catholic Church in St. Johns, Michigan. Visitation is scheduled Monday, December 19 from 6-8 P.M. and Tuesday, December 20 from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M at Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Johns, Chapel. A prayer vigil and Rosary will be prayed Tuesday at 7:30 P.M. Internment is Thursday, December 22 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Thomas Cemetery in Ann Arbor.

Myrl Chapin

Funeral Services will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel, Sunday, December 18, 2005 at 11:00 A.M. Mr. Thomas Bradley will officiate with burial at Ford Cemetery, Gratiot County, Michigan. Visitation will be held on Saturday 2-8 P.M. with family present 2-4 and 6-8 P.M.

Myrl was born in Bannister, Michigan on June 8, 1917 the son of Manuel and Ethel ( Davis ) Chapin. He resided most of his life in the Ashley and Bannister areas. Myrl married Josephine Martinka in Ithaca, Michigan on January 17, 1942. He farmed and had worked for Johnson Controls in Owosso, Michigan. He was a former member of the Gratiot County Sheriff Posse and enjoyed horses. Myrl was also a former constable of Bannister, Michigan. Myrl served in the U.S. Army as a Tec Sergeant during WW2 and was a member of V.F.W. Post 1735, Perrinton, Michigan.

He is survived by his wife Josephine Chapin of Ashley, Michigan, 1 daughter Norma and Robert Hohn of Lawrence, Kansas, 2 grandsons; Robert Lee Hohn of Nashville, Tennessee, Keith Lawrence and Johanna Hohn of Manhattan, Kansas, 2 great grandchildren;Elizabeth Anne and Ryan Michael Hohn, 2 sisters; Arvell and Lewis Dibble of Lansing, Michigan, Audrey and Dan Tuller of Ionia, Michigan, 3 brothers ;Dale and Letha Chapin of Stanton, Michigan, Douglas and Nancy Chapin of Stanton, Michigan, Arnold and Pat Chapin of Grand Rapids, Michigan, brother in law Melvin and Dorothy Martinka, 2 sister in laws; Arleen and Dick Zvonek, Elaine and Ed Zajdlik, special niece Carol and Joe Smolka, cousin Lorraine Fett, and a host of many more nieces and nephews, cousins. He is predeceased by parents, 3 sisters, Iva, Mary Lou and Wanda.

Sandra Kay Gleason

Pastor Tim Cockroft will officiate with burial at South Bingham Township Cemetery St. Johns, Michigan. Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 15, 2005 from 6-8 P.M. and Friday, December 16, 2005 from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M.

Sandra was born in Cheboygan, Michigan on May 27, 1948. She resided in Lansing until moving to St. Johns 9 years ago, and she graduated from Waverly High School. Sandra married James W. Gleason on October 14, 1967 in Lansing, Michigan. She retired from accounting. Her #1 love was her grandchildren. She loved Harry Potter, and she loved to play the organ and the piano. She took great pride in her family, and she was very proud of her heritage. She was very active in her church, and she was a very devoted Christian, wife and mother. She and her husband James enjoyed spending time together. She was a member of St. Johns Church of the Nazarene.

She is survived by her husband James W. Gleason of St. Johns, MI, 4 children; James P. and Roxanne Gleason of St. Johns, Kathy and Doug Fladseth of St. Johns, Norma and Robert Swanson of St. Johns, Jennifer and Matt Brown of Fowler,   brother Ed and Bev Shawa of Eaton Rapids,  sister Fran and Mike McCorkle of Grand Ledge, brother Garry and Debbie Shawa of Lansing, sister Claudia Shawa of Lansing,   brother Jon Shawa of Wolverine, 6 grandchildren; Scott, Bryan, Kristin, Rachel, Trisha, and Kaitlyn, family of the heart Doug and Kym Piggott of St. Johns,  Barb Goldman of St. Johns, and Kari and Damien Brown. She is predeceased by her parents Francis and Norma Shawa, and a grandson, Connor Gleason.
