Stella Myers

myers_stella.jpg (4439 bytes)Stella Myers, age 103, December 5, 1902 – January 6, 2006. She was pre-deceased by husband, Ralph Myers, 1988. Her parents were Jesse and Erma (Hayes) Coe. Her siblings were Myron Coe and Viola Beardsley.  Her early years were spent on a farm in Gratiot County, MI, and she enjoyed recalling the farm life and the rural schools. A proud achievement was her Diploma as an outstanding student graduate of the school’s eighth grade class of 1915. Stells saw her first automobile in 1910 when rural mailman delivered mail in auto instead of usual horse and buggy. She also recalled bitter memories of 1918 Flu Epidemic and its impacts. In 1920 Stella married Ralph Myers and moved to St. Johns, MI. They raised eleven children, five boys and six girls. The boys included Dale, Maurice, Wendell, Gaylord, and Stanley. The girls were Jean Hefty, Janet Brookins, Marilyn Myers, Joan Innis, Constance Varuska and Linda Myers. All are still living.

Stella was a strict, but fair, disciplinarian over her “brood” of eleven children. Coping with the big family and the devastating effects of the Great Depression and the trials, tribulations and travails of its effects, she faced all undaunted and never succumbed to the malaise of surrendering to the debilitating events of the 1930’s. She earned her right of passage to a better, peaceful and non-stressful existence. God Speed, Stella Myers!

Services will be held at the Osgood Funeral Home, 104 E. Cass St., St. Johns, MI, on Monday, January 9, 2006 at 2:00 P.M. with the Rev. Timothy Cockroft officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Rest Cemetery. Sympathy may be expressed in the form of contributions to the Church of the Nazarene, 515 N. Lansing St., St. Johns, MI 48879.

Many thanks to Lynette Brock whose help enabled Stella to live in her own apartment until December 2005, and Dr. Rajesh, M.D. and the staff at Hazel Findlay Country Manor, and the many callers from the St. Johns Church of the Nazarene.
