Bertha A. Vance

vance_bertha.jpg (4124 bytes)Bertha Ann Vance, 77 of Pewamo, went to be with her Lord, Feb. 1, 2006 at Carson City Hospital after losing a courageous battle with cancer.
Bertha was born April 1, 1928 in Riley Twp. the daughter of Herman and Amelia (Grenke) Hauser. She graduated from St. Johns High School in 1946 and had worked at Auto Owners Insurance in Lansing. She married Bernard Vance at St. Peter Lutheran Church on September 3, 1949. Bertha was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, where she was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Ladies Aid and a former Sunday School Teacher. Her church was a very important part of her life. She also was a member of the Lebanon Ladies Aid for many years. She was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed living on the farm in Lebanon Township. She loved her flowers, gardening and making crafts.

Bertha is survived by her husband, Bernard and three daugthers, Barbara (Larry) Christopher of Portage, Bonnie of St. Johns and Brenda (Mike)
Seeger of Lansing, 5 grandchildren, Clarissa, Billy and EmmaLee Seeger, and Elizabeth and Erica Christopher. Also two sisters, Lillian (Lawrence) Seeger of DeWitt, a brother, Ernest (Jean) Hauser of St. Johns, a sister in-law, Ruth Hauser and a brother in-law, James Long and many nieces and nephews and five God daughters. She was preceded in death by her parents, in-laws Emery and Emma Vance, brother-in-laws, Kenneth Vance, Edward Felzke, and sister in-law Betty Long.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2006 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 329 N. Sorrell St., Fowler at 11:00A.M. with Reverend Paul Clark officiating. Burial will follow at East Plains Cemetery. The family will receive friends at  Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, St. Johns Thursday and Friday, 2-4 and 6-8 P.M.Memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church, Mid Michigan Hospice or The American Cancer Society.

Harold L. Pease

pease_harold.jpg (4598 bytes)Harold L. Pease died January 30, 2006, at the age of 91. Born in Shiawassee County on May 24, 1914, the son of Byron D. and Ida May (Atkinson) Pease. He was a farmer and retired from Motor Wheel Corporation in July 1974, was an avid fisherman and hunter. Harold married Martha Weir in Lansing on May 23, 1936.

Surviving are his wife of 69 years, three sons, Harold D. (Susan) Pease of Ovid, Richard (Diane) Pease of DeWitt and Roger (Sharon) Pease of Arizona, 19 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and 1 great great granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Bert and Joe Pease, four sisters, Nellie Waltz, Luetta Vaughn, Ruth Wardell and Floella Woodhams, two grandchildren, Michael and Miriah Pease and one great granddaughter, Valerie Pease.

Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Friday, February 3, 2006 at the Osgood Funeral Home with Pastor Audie Clairmont officiating. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home. Sympathy may be expressed in the form of memorials to the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association.

Robert J. Ott

ott_robert.jpg (4590 bytes)Robert J. Ott died January 30, 2006, at the age of 88. Born on September 3, 1917 in Fowler, MI to Albert and Lillian (Eisler) Ott and was a lifelong resident of St. Johns. Mr. Ott was a Sergeant with the St. Johns Police Department, retiring in 1981 after 34 years of dedicated service. Mr. Ott was known for his contributions to the city and surrounding communities, involving not only his work with various businesses and residents but, community service projects such as parking facilities and the Clinton County Veterans Memorial. Mr. Ott was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Vivian M. Ott in 2003.

Surviving is a son, Randall (Mary) Ott of Holt, MI; two grandchildren, Robert R. (Andrea) Ott of Holt, MI and Michelle Ott of Holt, MI; four great-grandchildren, Jessica, Danielle, Kaitlyn and Lauren Ott, all of Holt; one brother, Donald Ott of St. Johns; several special nieces and nephews; and many friends, all of whom will miss him dearly.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, February 2, 2006 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 109 Linden Ave., St. Johns with the Rev. Fr. Eoin Murphy officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Rest Cemetery, St. Johns. Visitation will be held Wednesday, February 1, 2006 from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. at the Osgood Funeral Home, 104 E. Cass St., St. Johns. Sympathy may be expressed in the form of memorial contributions to the Hazel I. Findlay Country Manor, the Clinton County Veterans Memorial Fund or St. Joseph Catholic Church in memory of Robert J. Ott. The family would like to extend very special thanks to the staff of Hazel I. Findlay Country Manor and Dr. B. Rajesh, for their care and compassion toward Robert.

Charles Teske

Charles Teske, of Sebring, passed away on Friday, September 9, 2005, in Duluth, Minn. He leaves to cherish his memory longtime companion, Marcella Janssen of Sebring and brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Janice Teske-Allegan of Michigan.

Graveside services were Thursday, September 15, 2005 at 1 p.m. in Oak Hill Cemetery, Lake Placid, Fla. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to American Lung or Heart Associations. Services entrusted to Williams Funeral Home Bartow, Fla. (863) 533-0366

Clare Vernon Nelson,  61, retired Lease Way Corporation truck driver, died Thursday. There will be no services. Arrangements by Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel.

Della Margaret Root

root_della.jpg (4237 bytes)Della Margaret Root died January 26, 2006 at the age of 99. Born in Pine Grove, Michigan on March 18, 1906, the daughter of William and Johanna (Hoornstra) Smart. She was a member of the First Congregational Church and a life member of the Academia Club. Della married Forrest Root on July 23, 1928 and he preceded her in death.

Surviving are two sons, Richard (Ruth) Root of St. Johns and Robert (Dorothy) Root of Indianapolis, Indiana, seven grandchildren, Karen Reid of Minnesota, Pauline Reid of Virginia, Kathleen (Jeff) Pouch, Mark Root, Debra (Ron) Mills, all of St. Johns, Michael (Alison) Root and David (Theresa) Root, all of Indianapolis, IN, ten great grandchildren, and one brother, Harvard (Ruth) Smart of Petoskey. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Jean Dell Reid, two brothers, Clifford Smart and Lorne Smart, and one sister, Mildred Burnett.

Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Monday, January 30, 2006 at the First Congregational Church, 100 Maple Ave., St. Johns, burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery with the Rev. Matt Olson officiating. The family will receive friends 3-5 P.M. Sunday at the Osgood Funeral Home, 104 E. Cass St., and one hour prior to the service at the church. Sympathy may be expressed in the form of memorials to the First Congregational Church or Hazel I. Findlay Country Manor.

Kathleen J. Weber

weber_kathleen.jpg (4279 bytes)Kathleen J. Weber died January 25, 2006 at the age of 86. She was born July 1, 1919 the daughter of George and Eleanor (George) Hafner. She married Roman “Tom” Weber in Fowler on October 2, 1940 and he preceded her in death on September 2, 1969 after 28 years of marriage. Kathleen was the Baker at Waldron Elementary School and was best know for her cinnamon rolls and was a member of Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church.

Surviving are daughters, Judy (Claude) Hufnagel and Mary Jo Thelen all of Fowler, six grandchildren, Doug (Darlene) Hufnagel, Mike Hufnagel, Steve Hufnagel, Dan (Jenny) Hufnagel, Tricia (Scott) George and Tom (Kathy) Thelen, eleven great grandchildren and one great great grandson. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother, Hillary Hafner and sister, Pauline Marion.

The Funeral Service will be 10:30 A.M. Saturday, January 28, 2006 at the Goerge Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes, 11112 W. Ionia, Fowler, with the the Rev. Fr. Timothy E. MacDonald officiating, burial at Most Holy Trinity Cemetery. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 7-9 P.M. Friday at the funeral home with rosaries prayed 3 and 8 P.M.

Deanne Lynn Williams-Thelen

thelen_denise.jpg (5041 bytes)Deanne Lynn Williams-Thelen Westphalia, MI Age 42, passed away on Tuesday, January 24, 2006 as a result of an auto accident. She was born on March 6, 1963 in Norwich, Connecticut the daughter of Charles and Elizabeth (Smith) Williams. Deanne was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Westphalia and was also a Brownie leader. She was a master electrician, a graduate of U of M - Flint, and currently worked as a computer engineer in the St. Johns School District. Deanne enjoyed waterskiing and being at Vaughn Lake, but her greatest passion was her children - always wanting the best for them. She was preceded in death by her brother, Timothy and grandparents, Gail and Nellie Smith.

Surviving are her loving husband of 14 years, Marty; children, Zachary, Emily and Abby; parents, Charles and Elizabeth Williams; brothers, Charles (Lonell) Williams and Christopher (Kathy) Williams; mother and father-in-law, Joseph and Frances Thelen; brothers-in-law, Mike (Marie) Thelen, Ken (Ann) Thelen and Mark (Cathy) Thelen; and several nieces and nephews.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Cecilio Reyna, Pastor at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 28, 2006 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Westphalia. Rite of Committal will follow at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Westphalia. The family will receive friends at the St. Mary's Funeral Chapel, 210 N. Westphalia Street, Westphalia from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Thursday and Friday. Rosaries will be prayed at 3 and 8 p.m. Thursday and 3 p.m. Friday. A Scriptural Wake Service will be held at 8 p.m. Friday. Complete arrangements are entrusted to the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, Portland.
