Clarence E. "Bud" Shinn

Clarence E. "Bud" Shinn,  68, retired mechanic, died Tuesday. Services 11 a.m. Friday at Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Johns Chapel.

James J. "Jack" Davarn

davarn_jack.jpg (4144 bytes)James J. "Jack" Davarn Pewamo, MI Age 83, a kind, gentle, loving husband, father, grandpa and papa passed away on Tuesday, February 21, 2006 at Carson City Hospital. He was born on January 20, 1923 in Carson City, MI the son of Neville and Freda (Kropf) Davarn. On May 21, 1949 he married Rosemary O'Connell in St. Mary's Church in Carson City, and they celebrated 56 years of marriage. Mr. Davarn was a member of St. Joseph's Church in Pewamo, a member of the Pewamo Knights of Columbus Council 8071, as well as a member of the Fowler VFW Post 3733. Jack was a Veteran of World War II, and served in the Army Medical Corps for 38 months, serving 2 years on the Hospital Ship Wisteria. He was on the Board of Directors for the First Security Bank of Ionia, now the Independent Bank, from 1965-1987. Mr. Davarn was co-owner and president of Davarn Equipment, was on the Village of Pewamo Council for 18 years, and served as President of the council for a number of years. While President of the Village he served as Mayor of Detroit in Mayor Exchange for one day in May of 1964. He served on the Finance Board of St. Joseph's Parish for 28 years.

After closing Davarn Equipment in 1986, he was a loyal and faithful employee of Rehmann's Clothing Store in St. Johns for 14 years, retiring in May of 2000. He was preceded in death by his parents and baby son, James.

Surviving are his wife, Rosemary; daughter, Mary R. Davarn of Grand Rapids; son, Thomas Neville (Lisa) Davarn of Pewamo; 2 loving granddaughters, Catherine Marie Davarn and Elizabeth Rose Davarn; brother, William (Bertha) Davarn; sister, Jean (Jim) Cook; several nieces and nephews; and a lot of good friends. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Charlon O. Mason, Pastor at 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 24, 2006 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Pewamo. Rite of Committal will follow at St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery, Pewamo. The family will receive friends at the St. Mary's Funeral Chapel, 210 N. Westphalia Street, Westphalia from 6-9 p.m. on Wednesday and 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. on Thursday. Rosaries will be prayed at 8 p.m. Wednesday and 3 and 8 p.m. Thursday. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Joseph Educational Trust Fund, in memory of Mr. Davarn. The family is being served by Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home.

Ray Luttig

luttig_ray.jpg (4100 bytes)Ray Luttig died February 19, 2006, at the age of 80. Born in Clinton County on October 18, 1925, the son of Leo and Catherine (Goodman) Luttig. He retired from General Motors in 1980 with more than 33 years of service and was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in Italy during World War II.

Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Willa (Woodbury) Luttig, children, Barbara Reed of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Allan (Pamela) Luttig of Eagle, Susan Gavenda of Ithaca and Nancy (Roger) Klein of Pewamo, 11 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, brothers, Andrew (Margie) Luttig of Fowler, Paul (Patricia) Luttig of St. Johns and Urbie (Shirley) Luttig of Fowler and sisters, Viola Koenigsknecht of Fowler, Irene (Peter) Weber of Wisconsin, Catherine (William) Heckman of Pewamo, Elizabeth (Roger) Cook of Fowler and Helen (Jerry) Stump of Owosso. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Catherine, brothers, Ernie and Norman Luttig and son-in-law, Jerry Gavenda.

Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Thursday, February 23, 2006 at the Goerge Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes, 11112 W. Ionia, Fowler, burial at Most Holy Trinity Cemetery with the Rev. Fr. Timothy E. MacDonald officiating. The family will receive friends 5-8 P.M both Tuesday and Wednesday at the funeral home.

Andrea Reyna

Andrea Reyna, age 83, was born into eternal life February 13, 2006. Andrea was born on April 12, 1922 in Sabinas Hidalgo, NL, Mexico, the daughter of Cecilio and Maria Garza of Sabinas Hidalgo. Andrea moved to Flint from her beloved Mexico after marrying her husband Carlos on September 22, 1957. She grew to love this country greatly. She was a woman of great faith, strength, and joy. She loved roses, singing, praying, and practicing her faith. Andrea died one year to the day of arriving in Westphalia to live with her Son Fr. Cecilio.

Surviving are: sister, Epijmenia Garza of Sabinas Hidalgo; 4 children, Carlos Reyna and wife Marlene of Flint, Maria Mata and husband Frank of Flint, Andrea Wolf and husband Bill of Flint, Rev. Cecilio Reyna of Westphalia, MI; 9 grandaughters, AnaLisa Reyna, Theresa Reyna, Carla and Clare Reyna, Jessica Mata, Jennifer Mata, Eleni Mata, Natalie and Christiana Wolf, all of Flint, and numerous nephews and nieces in Mexico. Preceded in death: Husband Carlos, brothers: Cecilio (Esperanza), Roberto (Gillermina) Jesus (Dora), Silverio (Marina) (Fe), Cecilio (7 months) Sisters: Maria (Melchoir) Guadalupe (Enrique), Olivia (Enrique), Pablo, (brother in law).

The Mass of Christian Burial was held at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church on February 17, at 11 AM. Rev. Cecilio Reyna (son) Pastor of St. Mary, Westphalia, officiating.The family is grateful to the people and ladies of Westphalia who loved and cared for her. A special thanks to Sharon, Millie, MaryAnn, Irene, Sara,   Davita Home Care, and the people of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church for their years of friendship. Albert B. O'Brien, Jr.

He was born October 21, 1970 in Buffalo, NY the son of Albert and Marcia (Fagouri) O'Brien. Allie was a collection representative for Account Receivable Solutions in St. Johns, attended Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Fowler and enjoyed family, gourmet cooking, camping and his dog, Hershey.

His memory will always be cherished by his parents, Albert and Marcia O'Brien of Ft. Myers, FL; his sister and brother-in-law, Kerrigan and Dan Sellers of Lansing; and fiancée, Pennie Parisi of Fowler.

A memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, February 24, 2006 at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, St. Johns 989-224-4422 with the Rev. Fr. Timothy MacDonald officiating. The family will receive friends from 9:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral home..

Donnie Baumchen

baumchen_donnie.jpg (4331 bytes)Donnie Baumchen of St. Johns passed away Friday, February 17, 2006 at the age of 53. He was born April 16, 1952 in Owosso, MI the son of Lawrence and Julia (Boldovics) Baumchen. Donnie was a graduate of Durand High School, Class of 1970. He served in the U.S. Army, 101st Airborne during the end of the Viet Nam War, was past President of the Family Motorcycle Club in Lansing, he and his brother Billy were co-owners of the V Twin Motorcycle Supply in Lansing, was a licensed swimming pool contractor and was the owner/ operator of Classic Pool and Spa in DeWitt. Donnie was an avid Michigan football fan and enjoyed spending time with his family especially his grandson Joey. He married Jackie Diller December 18, 1971 and she survives him.

Also surviving are two sons, Jimmy (Angie) of St. Johns; Randy of Lansing; grandson Joey Wolfgang; his mother, Julia Baumchen of Durand; two brothers, Billy of Perry and Jack of Durand; in-laws, John and Gloria Diller of Durand. He was preceded in death by his father.

A memorial service will be held 7:30 pm Tuesday, February 21, 2006 at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, St. Johns 989-224-4422 with Rev. Fr. Timothy MacDonald officiating. The family will receive friends from 3:30 pm Tuesday until service time at the funeral home.

Bernice M. Yurcso

Bernice M. (Jones) Yurcso died February 14, 2006 at the age of 95. Born in Isabella County, Michigan November 6, 1910, she was the daughter of Gilbert and Rose (Ball) Jones and attended schools at Winn and Mt. Pleasant. She met and married Rudolph Yurcso in 1931 and resided in St. Johns since that time. They operated a service station for twenty years on N. Clinton at US-27. Bernice became a dedicated baptized Jehovahs Witness July 21, 1942 and belonged to the St. Johns Congregation, preaching the Good News of Gods Kingdom from there. Bernice came from a family of ten children, she being the youngest member.

She is survived by many nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held 2:00 P.M. Saturday, February 25, 2006 at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, St. Johns. Contributions may be made to the Jehovah's Witnesses Kingdom Hall of St. Johns. The family is being served by the Osgood Funeral Home.

Mabel M. Baldwin

Baldwin St. Johns, MI Formerly of Haslett, MI Age 85, died February 14, 2006; born March 9, 1920 in Middleton, Michigan, the daughter of Harry T. and Clara Mae (Meyers) Sherburne. Mrs. Baldwin was a lifetime member of the American Legion Auxiliary of Haslett, Michigan. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard W. Baldwin, whom she married March 18, 1937; granddaughter, Janice A. Bancroft; and 2 great-grandsons, Derek Y. Bancroft and Erik L. Warner.

Surviving are her daughter, Sandra L. (Gordon) Katz of Barryton; son, Robert A. (Marjorie) Baldwin of St. Johns; granddaughters, Debra (Robert) Chamberlain and Vanessa (Lynn) Warner, both of St. Johns, Jill (Leo) Drinkwine of Alden, MI and Christine Perry of St. Johns; grandson, Daniel R, Baldwin of St. Johns; 13 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren; and brother, Harry Sherburne.

Funeral services will be held Friday, February 17, 12:00 noon at the Gorsline-Runciman Funeral Homes, 1730 E. Grand River Avenue, East Lansing. Interment will follow in Deepdale Memorial Gardens, Lansing. The family will receive friends at the Chapel Thursday from 6-8 p.m. Those desiring may make contributions to the American Cancer Society, 1755 Abbey Road, East Lansing, MI 48823 in memory of Mrs. Baldwin.

Grace F. Higbie

higbie_grace.jpg (5773 bytes)Grace F. Higbie DeWitt, MI Age 94, died February 14, 2006; born January 30, 1912 in Lansing, Michigan. Mrs. Higbie retired from General Motors. She attended South Riley Bible Church and felt that prayer should not have been taken out of school. She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Russel.

Surviving are one daughter, Loretta Kirchen; 2 sons, Keith (Joann) and Audley (Mary) Higbie; grandchildren, Loren Gype, John Kirchen, Donna Corr, Gary Higbie, Peter Higbie, Rusty Kirchen, Quentin Higbie, Lisa Kirchen and Laura Higbie; 15 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held Monday, February 20, 11:00 a.m. at Calvary Baptist Church, 14769 Wood Road, Lansing with the Rev. Ed Holsworth, Pastor of South Riley Bible Church, officiating. Those desiring may make contributions to Hazel Findley Country Manor, 1101 South Scott Road, St. Johns, MI 48879 in memory of Mrs. Higbie. The family is being served by the Gorsline-Runciman Funeral Homes, Lansing, Michigan.
