Cleva L. Summer

Summer-Cleva.jpg (14475 bytes)Cleva L. Summer died April 10, 2006 at the age of 92. She was born in Fairview, Michigan, June 9, 1913, the daughter of Oliver and Alta (Mast) Miller. She was a member of Bethel Mennonite Church. She was a retired elementary school teacher and a member of MARSP. Cleva married Milo Summer on June 17, 1939, and he preceded her in death July 2, 2002.

She is survived by three sons, David (Shirley) Summers of Alberta, Canada, Philip (Lois) Summer of Elsie and George (Mary) Summer of Fairview, Michigan, three daughters, Karen (Gerald) Short of Archbold, Ohio, Sharon (Jerry) Wall of Staunton, Virginia and Mary (Tim) Kaufman of Elsie, 18 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, two sisters, Kathryn Sharick of St. Johns, MI, Olive Shetler of Arizona, and two brothers, Thruman Miller of Arizona and Lloyd Miller of Indiana. She was preceded in death by her parents and three sisters, Glada Kauffman, Iola Swartzendruber and Pauline Chaffee, and one brother, Clayton Miller.

Memorial Service will be 11:00 A.M. Saturday, April 15, 2006 at Bethel Mennonite Church, Ashley, with Pastor Joe Pendleton officiating. Private burial will take place at Washington Township Cemetery. The family will receive family and friends 4-7 P.M. Friday at the Osgood Funeral Home, St. Johns. Sympathy may be expressed in the form of memorials to Great Lakes Hospice or Rural Aids Organization (Tanzania).

Carleta Ann (Thornton) Fleming

Born in St. Johns on February 12, 1950, the daughter of Irwin and Beatrice Mae (Walker) Thornton. She was a cancer survivor who enjoyed life, painting, crocheting, was an excellent baker and cook. Carleta married Carlton Bon Fleming III in St. Johns on July 8, 1994 and he survives her.

Also surviving are her daughter, Stacie (David) Lindner of Lansing, three step-daughters, Christin Rae, Courtney Alexis and Erin Brooke, six grandchildren, David II, Donavin, Devin, Madison, Ethan and Abigail, sister, Roxann Buck, brother, Rick (Deb) Doak, several nieces and nephews, step-father, Jack Doak, best friends, Janice Brush, Peaches and Midge. She was preceded in death by her mother, father and daughter, Christie Marie Shaffier.

Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Friday, April 14, 2006 at the Osgood Funeral Home, 104 E. Cass St., St. Johns, burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery, St. Johns, with Pastor Steve Lang officiating. The family will receive friends 6-8 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home. Sympathies may be expressed in the form of contributions to the American Cancer Society or Sparrow Hospice.

Bertha M. Applebee

applebee_bertha.jpg (3972 bytes)Bertha M. Applebee, beloved mother and grandmother, died April 10, 2006, at the age of 88. Born in Chapin, Michigan on July 14, 1917, the daughter of Roy and Lula (Perry) Nethaway. She was a member of Markey Baptist Church in Roscommon. Bertha married Howard Applebee on July 11, 1965 and he preceded her in death on February 11, 1999.

Surviving are her children, Richard (Mary) Criner of Harrison, Neal (Colleen) Criner, Joanne (Larry) Cavanagh, all of Roscommon, Jerry (Sharon) Criner of Ovid and Jean (Bill) Leaman of South Rockwood, step children, Clare (Isedeane) Applebee and Barbara Groom, both of Ovid, many grandchildren, many great grandchildren, many great great grandchildren, brother, Wells Nethaway, sisters, Marjorie Gruesbeck and Evelyn Gardner. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Gerald and Dale Nethaway and one sister, Arlene Miller.

Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Thursday, April 13, 2006 at the Houghton Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes, 232 E. Oak St., Ovid, burial at Fairfield Cemetery with Pastor Kathy Murphy officiating. Visitation for family and friends will be 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home. Ruby Ellen Somers

Funeral Services will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel on Thursday, April 13, 2006 at 2:00 PM. Pastor Billie Lou Gillespie-Brown will officiate with burial at Ford Cemetery Elsie, Michigan. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 11, 2006 from 6-8 and Wednesday, April 12, 2006 from 2-8 P.M. with family preset 2-4 and 6-8 P.M.

Ruby was born in Ashley, Michigan on June 16, 1916 the daughter of Whitfield B. and Martha J. ( Brillhart ) Debar. She graduated from Elsie High School with the class of 1934 and resided most of her life in the Elsie area, and traveled to Florida for the winters. Ruby married Vern Somers on November 26, 1935 in Elsie, Michigan. He died January 27, 1997. She was a homemaker and was a farmers wife who worked in a number of small factories in the area. She enjoyed doing ceramics and going to the Chesaning Showboat. She was a member of Chapin United Methodist Church and the United Methoidst Woman's Group.

She is survived by 4 daughters Jeanette Hughes-Mitchell and Eugene Mitchell of Madison, FL, Linda and Ray Angell of Elsie, MI, Ruth and Jerry Harris of Chesaning, MI, Connie and Paul Correard of Bonita Springs, FL, 1 son Dean and Delores Somers of Elsie, MI, 14 grandchildren , many great grandchildren, 1 sister Hazel E. Wicke of Bonita Springs, FL, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, husband, 3 sisters, and 4 brothers.

Phyllis J. Hudson

hudson_phyllis.jpg (4749 bytes)Phyllis J. Hudson, age 56, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Saturday, April 8, 2006 in Alma, MI. Born August 25, 1949 to Arthur and Emmaline (Canouts) Hall in Alma, MI, Phyllis was the high school sweetheart of Richard Hudson, Jr. whom she married May 18, 1968 at the Church of God, St. Louis, MI. When she was able, Phyllis enjoyed camping, playing Dominoes, or a good card game of Hand & Foot.

The marriage of Phyllis and Richard included their daughter, Dawn of Lansing. Phyllis is also survived by her mother, Emmaline Hall; three sisters, Pat Tester and Sandy (Ray) Tester both of Wheeler, MI, and Marlene (Orville) Little of St. Louis, MI and two brothers, Ron (Sandy) Hall of Alma and Don (Lee) Hall of Castalia, Ohio. She was preceded in death by her father, Arthur Hall.

Funeral Services will 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, April 12, 2006 at the Osgood Funeral Home, 104 E. Cass Street, St. Johns, MI with Pastor John Elieff , Associate Pastor of Mt. Hope Church, Lansing officiating. Interment will follow in Eureka Cemetery. Relatives and friend may call at the Funeral Home Monday 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. and Tuesday 2:00 – 4:00 and 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. Will R. Pirhonen

Will R. Pirhonen died April 6, 2006, at the age of 63. Born in Hancock, Michigan on October 11, 1942 the son of Viljo and Linda (Hulkonen) Pirhonen. Will worked for the State of Michigan as an accountant until his retirement in 2003. He married Peggy Jo Umbarger, September 3, 1988 and she survives him.

Also surviving are two sons, Jeremy and Jamey Sawdy, one daughter, Heather Sawdy, mother and father-in-law, Delton “Bud” (Darlene) Umbarger, two sisters-in-law, Debra K. Watson and Linda Mae Pirhonen, two brothers-in- law, Dennis G. (Debra L.) Umbarger and Michael Chapman, also many cousins, nieces and nephews. Will was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Linda Lou Chapman, one brother, Roger Pirhonen and his step-father Howard Wade.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, April 10, 2006 at the Osgood Funeral Home, 104 East Cass St., St. Johns, MI, with Pastor O’Ryan Rickard officiating. The family will receive friends Sunday from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. at the funeral home. Sympathies may be expressed in the form of contributions to Lowe United Methodist Church-Barrier Free Fund or Briggs Public Library.

Anna Mary Galecka

galecka_anna.jpg (3547 bytes)Anna Mary (Yanci) Galecka, 96, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, following a lengthy stay at Ovid Healthcare Center in Ovid, Michigan. . Mrs. Galecka was born on September 27, 1909, in Homer City, Pennsylvania. She moved to Ovid in the early 1900s and married Martin Galecka, Sr. on October 26, 1929. She was a member of St. Cyril’s Catholic Church in Bannister for 77 years and was active in the parish’s Altar Society. While she assisted with numerous aspects of the family farm, chickens were her specialty. She enjoyed many happy days with her grandchildren, trips to northern Michigan, and visits with her cousins in Pennsylvania.

Anna is survived by her children: Martin (Agnes) Galecka, Jr. of Ovid, Joseph (Marilyn) Galecka of Elsie, C. Carl (Janet) Galecka of Owosso, and Mary (Ray) Dilley of Fenton. She has 12 grandchildren: Joanne (Bruce) Denovich of St. Johns, Robert Galecka of Elsie, Jim Galecka of Colorado, Sharon (Marc) Livernois of Midland, Tom (Shawn) Galecka of Ovid, Craig (Heather) Galecka of Williamston, Mark Galecka of Novi, Matt Galecka of Potterville, Theresa (Sunil) Merchant of California, Cindy Galecka of California, Michael Dilley of Midland, and Kari Dilley of New York. Her 11 great grandchildren are Kristie, Brent and Katie Denovich; Nicholas Galecka, Daniel and Ryan Livernois; Bryan, Kayla and Calvin Galecka; Mitchell Galecka; and Nisha Merchant. The local newspaper recently featured a photo of her and five generations of Galeckas, including great, great granddaughter Hailey. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents Philip and Regina (Melkinek) Yanci, sister Helen Bissel and brother John Vilko

Visitation will be on Sunday evening from 6-8 P.M. and Monday 2-8 P.M. with family present 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel. Rosary will be prayed on Monday evening at 6:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, April 11, 2006 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Cyril's Catholic Church, Bannister, Michigan. Burial will take place at Ford Cemetery and memorial donations may be made to St. Cyril’s Catholic Church or WOES radio program.

Darold C. Reynolds

reynolds_curley.jpg (3667 bytes)Darold C. “Curly” Reynolds, 73 died Friday, April 07, 2006 at Hospice House in Lansing. Curly was born on November 21, 1932 in Ionia County, MI the son of Ray Tyler and Olive Graham. He was a Korean War veteran of the U. S. Army. On July 7, 1951 he married LaDessa P. Mevis in Greenville, MI. Curly was a fixture repairperson for Oldsmobile for 30 years and had retired in 1983. He enjoyed hunting and the outdoors, his family and doing carpenter work.

He is survived by his wife LaDessa Daughters, Kathleen and Bud Blackmer of St. Johns, Robin and Roger Mygrants of St. Johns and Julie
and Gary Crandell of Lansing. 4 Grandchildren, Shawn Blackmer, Shannon Mitchell, Michelle Clark and Daniel Mygrants. 11 Great-Grandchildren
Sisters Alice Lamar and Lucy Nementz both of Jackson, MI Brother Howard Reynolds of Texas.   He was preceded in death by sisters, Mary Biddinger, Ruby Musser and Ethelin Reynolds, Brothers Clarence and Robert Reynolds.

Funeral services will be held at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, 989-224-4422 on Tuesday, April 11, 2006 at 11:00 A.M. with Rev. John Jakus and Rev. Birt Cooper officiating. Burial will follow at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens in Greenville, MI. The family will receive friends Sunday and Monday, 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. at the Funeral Home. Memorial may be made to Hospice House of Mid Michigan.

Robert J. Pratt

pratt_robert.jpg (4235 bytes)Robert J. Pratt passed away Thursday, April 6, 2006 at the age of 89. He was born May 16, 1916 in Clinton County, MI the son of James and Emma (Stead) Pratt. Bob was an Army veteran of WWII, a member of the American Legion Post # 45 in Hastings, a member and Past Commander of VFW Post #4113 in St. Johns. He enjoyed bowling and was on several bowling leagues for many years. Bob retired from the United States Postal Service with 30 years of service, and after his” first” retirement he worked for the St. Johns McDonald’s for 10 years and has been a volunteer at Hazel I. Findlay Country Manor since 1982.

He married Esther J. Smith on June 29, 1946 and she survives him. Also surviving are three daughters, Peri-Anne (Bill) Warstler of Tampa, FL, Nancy (Larry) Moeggenberg of St. Johns, Candace “Candy” (John) Ammarman of Mason; eight grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; two sisters, Ruth (Paul) Roof of St. Johns, Dorothy Salter of Six Lakes, MI and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Kenneth, Don, and Earl.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 am Monday, April 10, 2006 at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, St. Johns 989-224-4422 with Rev. Kay Pratt officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Rest Cemetery with military honors provided by the St. Johns Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm Saturday and 2-4 and 6-8 pm Sunday at the funeral home. Debra K. Harris

Born in St. Johns on January 30, 1955, the daughter of Leo and Lorna (Munson) Prichard, Jr. She was a housekeeper, a member of The Salvation Army and the Neighborhood Watch for Oak Park. Debra married Roger Harris in Maple Rapids on October 26, 1974 and he survives her.

Also surviving are her children, Jimmy L. (Jennifer) Prichard of St. Johns, Anita (Ron) Abraham, Wayne (special friend Stephanie) Harris and Roger Harris, Jr., all of Lansing, grandchildren, Zachary, Cassandra and Megan Prichard, Isaac and Tiffani Abraham, mother, Lorna Prichard of St. Johns, brothers, Terry (Tammy) Prichard of Fowler and Robert (Cheryl) Prichard of St. Johns, sister, Sharon Klumpp of Elwell, step brother, Phillip Luppo of Florida, many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father and brother-in-law, Lonnie Klumpp.

Funeral services will be 3:00 P.M. Friday, April 7, 2006 at the Osgood Funeral Home, burial at Eureka Cemetery with Major Bill Spyker officiating. The family will receive friends 6-8 P.M. Leona Lou Toleson

Leona Lou Toleson Stanton, MI Formerly of DeWitt, MI   passed away on Thursday, April 6, 2006 at the age of 76. She was born October 10, 1929 in Stanton, MI the son of David and Belle (Clevenger) Swift. Leona was a graduate of Stanton High School, Class of 1947. She was a homemaker and also worked in banking for over 20 years, retiring from American Bank and Trust in 1987. She enjoyed crafts, playing cards, and loved spending time with family and friends. Leona was married to Frank Toleson for 58 years. Frank preceded her in death by two days.

Surviving are one son, Frank J. Toleson III (Janis) of Lansing; three daughters, Kathy of DeWitt, Diane (Patrick) Dengate of Ferndale, and Angela (Richard) Speirs of Laingsburg; 11 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; and a former son-in-law, Dennis Reed.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 8, 2006 at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, St. Johns, MI 989-224-4422 with the Rev. Matthew Olson officiating. Interment will be 1:30 p.m. at Forest Hill Cemetery in Stanton, MI. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Friday and one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Frank J. Toleson Jr.

Frank J. Toleson Jr. passed away on Tuesday, April 4, 2006 at the age of 80. He was born September 18, 1925 in Greenville, MI the son of Frank and Rose (Pearsall) Toleson. Frank was a graduate of Stanton High School, Class of 1947, served in the Marine Corp during WWII, was a survivor of the battle of Iwo Jima, and was a member of the Sheridan VFW Post # 5065. He was an avid fisherman, enjoyed playing cards as a member of a euchre club for 50 years and loved spending time with family and friends. He worked at Capital Photo Engraving for over 25 years
and retired from Motor Wheel in 1987. Frank married Leona Swift on October 24, 1947 in Stanton and she survives him.

Also surviving is one son, Frank J. Toleson III (Janis) of Lansing; three daughters, Kathy of DeWitt, Diane (Patrick) Dengate of Ferndale, Angela (Richard) Speirs of Laingsburg; 11 grandchildren, Elizabeth and Andrew Dengate, Dennis and Ben Reed, Shawn and Nicole Goldsmith, Sarah, Danielle, Nicole, Ricky, and Kody Speirs; 4 great grandchildren, Aaron, Alexandria, and Alyssa Flora, Kayelyn Mayers; former son-in-law, Dennis Reed.
