Funeral Services will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel on April 21, 2006 at 11:00 AM. Rev. Diane Gordon and Mr. Thomas Bradley will officiate with burial at Riverside Cemetery Elsie, Michigan. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 19, 2006 from 6-8 P.M. and Thursday, April 20, 2006 from 2-8 P.M. with family present 2-4 and 6-8 P.M.

Jacob was born in Lansing, Michigan on March 9, 2000 the son of Joe Douglas and Laura Lynn ( Micka ) Skaryd. He resided most of his life in Bannister, Michigan. Jacob enjoyed watching his fish tank and TV. He enjoyed riding his scooter board and football. He liked big dogs, but not cats.

He is survived by parents Joe and Laura Skaryd of Bannister, MI, 2 sisters; Ashley and Brooke Coleman at home, 3 brothers; Kody Coleman, and Tyler and Joey Skaryd at home, grandparents Barbara (Norm Martin) Galehouse of Ovid, MI, Douglas and Toni Skaryd of Bannister, MI, Raymond and Barb Micka of Ypsilanti, MI, great grandparents: Joe and Hilda Micka of Elsie, MI, and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Memorials may be made to O-E Youth Football Program. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel.

Phyllis J. Woodbury

woodbury_phyllis.jpg (4538 bytes)Phyllis J. Woodbury died April 18, 2006, at the age of 76. She was born in Pontiac on September 14, 1929, the daughter of Zenos and Letah (Knight) Hyler. She was retired from Federal Mogul, a member of the St. Johns Lutheran Church and lived most of her life in St. Johns. She married Norman Woodbury on November 1, 1947 and he preceded her in death on October 12, 2003.

Surviving are two daughters, Pamela (Anthony) Burtovoy of Dimondale and Lori (Ron) Souza of Portland, one son, Kurt (Gloria) Woodbury of St. Johns, five grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and one sister, Audrey Little of St. Johns. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one brother, Donald Hyler.

Funeral Services will be 11:00 A.M. Saturday, April 22, 2006 at the Osgood Funeral Home with burial in Mt. Rest Cemetery. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Friday at the funeral home. Sympathy may be expressed in the form of memorials to the St. John's Lutheran Church.

Richard L. Stewart

Richard L. Stewart died April 17, 2006 at the age of 82. Born February 12, 1924 in Clinton County, Michigan the son of Isaac and Florence (Ellis) Stewart and lived in St. Johns before moving to Lakeview in 1997. He was a member of Pilgrim United Methodist Church and a retired machine operator from Federal Mogul. On July 6, 1944 Richard married Gaila Wing and she survives him.

Also surviving are two daughters, Patricia (Richard) Richmond of Lakeview and Lynette Patterson of St. Louis, one son, Gayle (Beatrice) Stewart of Wayland, four grandchildren, Dawn (Mark) Simancik of Highland, Richard (Janice) Skurkis of Oakland County, Beth (Don) Plugge of Comstock Park, and Kenneth Stewart of Wayland, and eight great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Donald Stewart.

Funeral Services will be 11:00 A.M. Friday, April 21, 2006 at the Osgood Funeral Home with burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6-8 P.M. Wednesday, 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home. Sympathy may be expressed in the form of memorials to Pilgrim United Methodist Church or Brockway Weslyan Church of Lakview.

Ruby B. (Smith) Ashley

ashley_ruby.jpg (5045 bytes)Ruby B. (Smith) Ashley, age 88, died on Monday, April 17, 2006 at the Hospice House of Mid-Michigan surrounded by her loving family. Ruby was born in Ovid on November 2, 1917 to Jay and Maude (Finch) Warren. She graduated from Ovid High School, class of 1935 and Clinton County Normal. She was married to Darwin Smith (died 1986) and William Ashley (died 2001). She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Laingsburg, the Farm Bureau and the Clinton County Extension. Ruby taught school for two years and worked for the State of Michigan, Civil Service Payroll section and retired in 1975. Her Family was the Love of her life and she will always be near in their hearts.

She is survived by five children, Lorna Gillespie of DeWitt, Keith Smith of Bath, Ken (Beth) Smith of Upland, IN, Kathy Dunkel of Lansing and Rick (Kris) Smith of Eaton Rapids; ten grandchildren, Annette Gillespie, Rob (Paige) Gillespie, Karen (Stephen) Taylor, Sally (Ed) Kaehn, Allen Smith, Cindy (Kevin) Powell, Kris (Scott) Brown, Aaron (Michelle) Burgess, Erik Smith and Scott Smith; eight great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Betty Warren of Ovid; brother-in-law, Lawton (Roseanna) Smith of Mackinaw City; stepbrother, Frances (Ann) Ferden; and Special friend, Becky Bastuk. She was predeceased by brother, Albert Warren and sister, Jennie Blackburn.

Funeral services will be Thursday, April 20, 2006 at 1 p.m. at the Watkins Brothers Funeral Home in Laingsburg with Pastor Cayle Beagle officiating. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will take place in the Laingsburg Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the First Congregational Church of Laingsburg and Hospice of Mid-Michigan.

Joseph Charles Upton

Joseph Charles Upton, 67, of Arab, Ala., formerly of Maple Rapids, died April 6.

Services have been held. Arrangements by Gober Funeral Chapel, Arab, Ala.

Helen M. Kohagen

Helen M. Kohagen died April 16, 2006, at the age of 88. Born July 8, 1917, in Ionia County, the daughter of Bert and Alma (Ostrander) Morgan. Helen was a homemaker and enjoyed her family. She married Alfred C. Kohagen on August 10, 1944 and he preceded her in death on December 8, 2001.

Surviving are three daughters, Louise (Robert) Antes of Fenwick, Nancy (Louis) Forbes of St. Johns, Clara (Bill) VanDeusen of Fowler, two sons, Frederick (Karen) Kohagen of St. Johns and Lesley (Janet) Kohagen of Fowler, fifteen grandchildren, thirty-four great grandchildren, four great great grandchildren and brother, Robert (Evelyn) Morgan of Utah. She was preceded in death by her husband, brothers, Clarence, Lesley, Henry, Olen, Bert Jr., and George Morgan; sisters, Clara Werner, Alma Morgan and Sarabelle Gee.

Funeral Services will be held 11:00 A.M. Thursday, April 20, 2006 at the Goerge Chapel of Osgood Funeral Homes in Fowler. The Rev. George Brinley will officiate with burial at East Plains Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday 6-8 P.M., Wednesday 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made in Helen's name to the Alzheimer's Association or Ovid Healthcare Center Fence Fund.

Ellis "Al" Sheldon

Ellis "Al" Sheldon died April 16, 2006 at the age of 82. Born in Stanton, Michigan on April 3, 1924, the son of George and Nina (Mung) Sheldon. He retired from Regency Olds. Al married Joyce Mudget in Maple Rapids on July 22, 1950 and she survives him.

Also surviving are his children, Al Sheldon, Diane (Russell) Kramer, Linda (Jim) Miller, Raymond (Melissa) Sheldon and Jeff Sheldon, 8 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, brothers, Chuck Sheldon of Ft. Myers, FL, Lou Sheldon of Elsie and Henry Sheldon of Ovid, sister, Alice Rick of Phoenix, AZ, several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and one sister.

Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, April 18, 2006 at the Houghton Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes, burial at Riverside Cemetery in Elsie with Pastor Larry Smith officiating. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Monday at the funeral home. Sympathy may be expressed in the form of memorials to the charity of the donor's choice.

Helen E. Smith

Helen E. Smith East Lansing, MI Age 90, died Tuesday, April 11, 2006 in Lansing. She was born October 3, 1915 in Fowler, MI, the daughter of Conrad and Mary Werner. She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd, her daughter, Constance, her son-in-law, Eugene Rademacher and his children, Dennis, Ann, David and Mary. Eight siblings also preceded her in death. Helen retired from Schmidt's Grocery in Colonial Village.

She is survived by her children, Joan Rademacher of Madison, WI, Phyllis (James) Eggert of San Francisco, CA, Duane (Patricia) Smith of Madison, WI, Linda (Ross) Bishop of DeWitt, MI and Carol McBride (Rick Ettinger) of Eaton Rapids, MI; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by sisters, Monica Bengel and Marie Klein of Portland, MI and Mathilda Heightchew of FL.

Therese A. Klein

klein_theresa.jpg (4799 bytes)Therese A. Klein Westphalia, MI Age 68, passed away on Tuesday, April 11, 2006 after a long, courageous, and heroic battle with cancer. She was born on August 7, 1937 in Clinton County, the daughter of Oscar and Louise (Thelma) Schafer. Therese was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Westphalia and the Christian Mothers. She was a woman of strength, and her faith was very important to her. She was also a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters. Therese enjoyed cooking, baking, sewing, traveling and gardening. On June 16, 1960 she married Stanley J. Klein and for the past 22 years they have worked side by side painting. She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers-in-law, Carl May and Leonard Schomisch.

Surviving are her husband, Stanley; children, Sue (Chuck) Platte of Westphalia, Karen (Scott) Schafer of Pewamo, Sandy (Bruce) Cook of Westphalia, Joyce (Kevin) Schmitt of Fowler, and Debbie (Jim) Lansdell of Portland; grandchildren, Bob, Andy, Stacey, Paul, Matthew, Travis, Tara, Zachary, Zoie, Shannon, Chelse, Alexis, Brianna, and Taylor; siblings, Stanley (Rose) Schafer, Jerome (Adeline) Schafer, Marie Schomisch, Germaine May, Eugene (Marge) Schafer, Mark (Mary Lee) Schafer and Betty Schafer; and many nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Cecilio Reyna, Pastor at 10:30 a.m., Monday, April 17, 2006 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Westphalia. Rite of Committal will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. The family will receive friends 1-3 and 5-7 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday at St. Mary's Funeral Chapel, 210 N. Westphalia St. The Rosaries will be prayed at 2 and 6 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. A Scriptural Wake Service will be held at 6 p.m. Sunday. Arrangements are entrusted to the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, Portland.
