James Anthony Micka

micka_james.jpg (3631 bytes)James Anthony Micka age 51 of Elsie, Michigan died Monday, May 22, 2006 at Harper Hospital Detroit, MI.

Funeral Services will be held at Holy Family Catholic Church Ovid, MI on Friday, May 26, 2006 at 10:00 AM. Rev. Fr. Raymond Urbanek will officiate with burial at Riverside Cemetery Elsie, Michigan. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 24, 2006 from 6-8 and Thursday, May 25, 2006 from 2-8 P.M. with family present 2-4 and 6-8 P.M.

James was born in Owosso, Michigan on May 15, 1955 the son of Joseph Martin and Hilda Ann ( Hrncharik ) Micka. He resided most of his life in in the Elsie area and graduated from Ovid-Elsie High School with the class of 1973.. James married Candis Watson on October 6, 1990 at St. Cyrils Catholic Church of Bannister, MI. He worked for the Ovid-Elsie Schools as a Custodian. He enjoyed making birdhouses, fishing with his kids, and gardening. He was very fussy about his lawn and landscaping. James was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, Ovid, MI and the ZCBJ Lodge #225 of Bannister, MI.

He is survived by his wife Candis Micka of Elsie, MI, 2 daughters Ashley Micka, Lacey Micka and a son Jacob Micka all still at home, parents Joseph and Hilda Micka of Elsie, MI, sister Betty Jane Micka of Loveland, CO, 2 brothers Raymond and Barb Micka of Ypsilanti, MI, Thomas and Jodi Micka of Mexico, and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by 2 brothers, and a nephew Johnny.

Memorials may be made to a fund for his childrens education. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel.

Delores Faye Kruger

Funeral Services will be held at First Baptist Church St. Johns, MI on Thursday, May 25, 2006 at 11:00 AM. Pastor Tim Knaus will officiate with burial at South Bingham Township Cemetery St. Johns, Michigan. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 24, 2006 from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M.

Delores was born in Linton, Indiana on May 3, 1932 the daughter of Garrett and Geneva Elizabeth ( Fisher ) Smith. She resided most of her life in DeWitt area. She graduated from high school in Knox, Indiana in 1950. Delores married Lawrence F. Kruger on March 17, 1951 in Winamac, IN. She was a homemaker. She enjoyed gardening, fishing, camping and spending time with her grandchildren. Delores was a member of First Baptist Church of St. Johns.

She is survived by her husband Lawrence Kruger of Dewitt, MI, 2 sons; Larry and Marsha Kruger of St. Johns, MI, John and Karen Kruger of Flushing, MI, 3 daughters; Jean and David Woods of Lowell, MI, Joann and John Prohaska of St. Johns, MI, Judy Kruger of Lowell, MI, 16 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren. She is predeceased by her parents.

Memorials may be made to New Tribes Mission or Child Evanglism Fellowship. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Johns Chapel.

James F. Burke

burke_james.jpg (5046 bytes)James F. Burke died Tuesday, January 10, 2006 at the age of 88. He was raised and educated in Charlotte and was an Army veteran serving during WWII. In 1945 he went to work for Reo Motors in the accounting department. James married Margaret Hammerschmidt on June 14, 1941 and in 1949 they built the Burkewood Motel on the west side of Lansing, which they operated for 20 years. Burke was one of the founding members of the Lansing Motel Assn., which later became the Lansing Convention and Visitors Bureau. In 1970 he went into sales for Dental Arts Laboratory and remained there until retiring in 1983. In 2001 the Burkes moved to St. Johns.

Surviving is his wife, Margaret; one daughter, Roberta O’Connor of St. Johns, grandchildren, Michelle and Greg Teklinski of West Bloomfield, Brian O’Connor and Michael Malone of Los Angeles and great-grandchildren, Kevin, Mark and Erica Teklinski. He was preceded in death by his son-in-law, J. Michael O’Connor in 1980 and grandson Kevin O’Connor in 1990.

Sherrie Lynn Pitt

pitts_Sherrie.jpg (4160 bytes)Sherrie Lynn Pitt died May 22, 2006 at the age of 31 as the result of an auto accident. She was born in Lansing on September 12, 1974.

Surviving are her children, Devon, Melissa, Shania and Hailey Thomas, all of Dansville, mother, Bonnie Lou (John Teems) Forbes of St. Johns, father, Eugene Allen Fraser of Traverse City, brothers, Eugene Allen Fraser, Jr. of St. Johns and Tom (Keri) Law of Traverse City, grandparents, Hiram "Bud" and Helen Sage of St. Johns, several nieces and nephews, many friends. She was preceded in death by her grandmother, Mary Lou Sage (1978) and uncle, Gary Allen Sage (1988).

Memorial services will be 1:00 P.M. Thursday, June 1, 2006 at St. John's Lutheran Church with the Rev. George Brinley officiating. Arrangements by the Osgood Funeral Home.

Cyrus Arthur Johnson

johnson_cyrus.jpg (4019 bytes)Cyrus Arthur Johnson age 82 of Elsie- Chapin Township, Michigan died on Sunday, May 21, 2006 at his home. Funeral services will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel on Wednesday, May 24, 2006 at 11:00 A.M. Visitation will be on Monday 6-8 P.M. and Tuesday 2-8 P.M. and family will be present 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Pastor Billie Lou Gillespie-Brown will officiate and burial will take place at Ford Cemetery in Gratiot County, Michigan.

Cyrus was born in Chapin Township, Michigan on September 14, 1923 the son of Chester and Elsie ( Campbell ) Johnson. He resided most of his life in the Elsie / Chapin Township area. He graduated from Elsie High School with the class of 1941 and he was a farmer and enjoyed baseball and had played for the Marion Springs team in his earlier years, he also enjoyed hunting and fishing. He had previously served on the Chapin Township Board. He supported the Chapin United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his brother, Frank Johnson of Chapin Township, Michigan, 3 sisters, Erma Criner of Chapin Township, Michigan, Edna Meadows of Roscommon, Michigan, Ellen Waggoner of Roscommon, Michigan, he has many nieces and nephews who also survive him. He was predeceased by his parents and a baby sister.

Memorials may be made to the Chapin United Methodist Church, in his memory. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel.

Ronald Hyler

hyler_ronald.jpg (4752 bytes)Ronald Hyler, age 89, of St. Johns died Sunday, May 21, 2006. Born July 1, 1916 in St. Johns, the son of Mitchell and Nora (Dobson) Hyler, Ronald married Lillian Nemetz on May 18, 1938 and she preceded him in death on September 14, 1998. Ron, a lifelong resident of St. Johns, was a mail carrier in St. Johns for over 30 years, a veteran of WW II serving in the U. S. Army and member of St. Johns V.F.W. Post 4113. Beside his wife, Lillian; Ron was preceded in death by two stillborn children and four brothers, Kent, Duane, George, and E. O. Hyler.

He is survived by a daughter, Barbara Fruchey of Gowen, a son, Charles (Beverly) Hyler of St. Johns, seven grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and one great great grandson.

Funeral Services will be 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, May 24, 2006 at the Osgood Funeral Home, 104 E. Cass Street, St. Johns with the Reverend Steve Weinberger officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Rest Cemetery with Military Honors provided by the St. Johns Honor Guard. The family will receive friends at the Funeral Home Monday 6:00 – 8:00 and Tuesday 2:00 – 4:00 and 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. Sympathy may be expressed in the form of memorials to the St. Johns Fire Department Defibrillator Fund.

Bernice Hubbell-Lee,  84, fire department (California) secretary, died Wednesday. Memorial services 1 p.m. June 3 at First United Methodist Church of St. Johns. Arrangements by Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Johns Chapel.

William Lee Beach, 62,  of St. Johns died Tuesday May 16, 2006. He was employed at General Motors in Lansing.

Services will be held Friday May 19, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. at Gorsline-Runciman, Lansing with burial in Deepdale Memorial Gardens, Lansing, Michigan.  Visitation will be held one hour before the services.
