Thomas A. Droste

droste_thomas.jpg (5062 bytes)Thomas A. Droste Westphalia, MI Age 72, passed away on Monday, June 19, 2006 after a long struggle with diabetes. He was born on February 7, 1934 in Clinton Co. the son of Aloysius and Elizabeth Droste. Tom was a lifelong resident of Westphalia and a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Westphalia. He worked as a salaried employee for General Motors retiring in 1988 and was an active member of several local organizations, including 12 years on the Pewamo-Westphalia School Board. He was preceded in death by a sister and brother-in-law, Georgiana (Charles) Clark and brother-in-law, James Pung.

Tom is survived by his wife of 49 years, Janet (Keilen); 3 sons, Tim of Lansing, Tom (LeAnn) of DeWitt, and Ted (Becky) of Pewamo; Thomas also had 6 grandchildren who were the inspiration of the last several years of his life, Dena and Heidi (children of Tom and LeAnn) and Amber, Olivia, Isabelle, Tyler (children of Ted and Becky); Tom had 3 sisters surviving, Alice (Sam) Donohue, Wilma (John) Schafer and Pat Pung; one brother, Richard (Bernadette) Droste.

The Memorial Mass will be celebrated by Rev. Cecilio Reyna at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, June 22, 2006 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Westphalia. Rite of Committal will take place at a later date in St. Mary's Cemetery. At Tom's request, his body will be donated to Michigan State University for diabetes research. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Funeral Chapel, 210 N. Westphalia St. The Rosaries will be prayed 8 p.m., Tuesday and 3 p.m., Wednesday. A Scriptural Wake Service will be held at 8 p.m., Wednesday. Arrangements are entrusted to the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, Portland.

Anna C. Maas

maas_anna.jpg (5451 bytes)Anna C. Maas died June 17, 2006, at the age of 80. Born in Detroit on November 19, 1925, the daughter of William and Ann (Pickard) Walton. She was commited to the ministry of Jehovah’s Witnesses and had a sincere interest in people. Anna married Lawrence Maas in Detroit in November 1944.

Surviving is her husband of 61 years, Lawrence Maas, daughters, Lauren (Joe) McHale of Milford, Constance Maas, Barbara Loraine, both of California and Claudia (Randy) Eberhard of St. Johns, son, David (Debra) Maas of St. Ignace, many grandchildren and great grandchildren, sister, Gloria (Les) Lowe of Farmington Hills and brother, Donald (Mary) Walton of Detroit. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Memorial services will be 2:00 P.M. Saturday, July 8, 2006 at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 1998 N. Lansing St., St. Johns, with Elder Richard Eggers officiating. Sympathy may be expressed in the form of memorials to: “Jehovah’s Witnesses”, 1998 N. Lansing St., St. Johns, MI 48879. Arrangements by the Osgood Funeral Home.

Ferrald C. Nelson

Ferrald C. Nelson died June 18, 2006 at the age of 80. Born in Blue Island, Illinois, the daughter of Ferris and Christine (Hickey) Wise. She was employed at Sealed Power Corporation, was a member of the Muskegon Humane Society, loved the outdoors and animals.

Surviving is her sister, Madelene McCastle of DeWitt, nieces, Monica (Lee) Phelps and Lori Thornton, all of DeWitt and nephews, Tyler (Sheila) McCastle and Todd (Nicki) McCastle, all of DeWitt. She was preceded in death by her mother.

There will be no services or visitation. Burial will take place at Holton Cemetery, Holton, MI. Sympathy may be expressed in the form of memorials to the Humane Society & Animal Rescue, 2640 Marquette Ave., Muskegon, MI 49442-2626. Arrangements by the Osgood Funeral Home.

John Giovanni Briganti

briganti_john.jpg (5901 bytes)John Giovanni Briganti died June 18, 2006 at the age of 72. He was born in Bel Forte, Italy on June 25, 1933 the son of Giovanni and Giovanna (Pelligrinelli) Briganti. John was a member of Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church , Fowler, The International Graphic Arts Education Association and PaxChristi U.S.A. John married Mary Ellen Wintermute on December 26, 1964 and she survives him.

Also surviving are 4 children, John Briganti of Wixom, Marie (John) Peterson of Livonia, James(Yoko) Briganti, Nagasaki, Japan, David Briganti, Blacksburg, Va., 5 grandchildren, Taylor and Ellie Peterson, Hiro, Kentaro, and Taiga Briganti, 1 sister, Gemma (Tony) Tornatore, and nieces, Angela (Steven) Carinci, Joanne (Anthony) Campagiorno, grand nieces, Sophia and Emma Campagiorno, an Aunt and many cousins in Italy.

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:30 A.M. Thursday, June 22, 2006 at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Fowler, with Rev. Fr. Timothy E. MacDonald, Rev. Fr. Peter Dougherty, Rev. Fr. Tom McDevitt, and Rev. Fr. Fred Thelen concelebrating. The family will receive friends at their residence, 10130 W. Dexter Trail, Fowler, MI. 48836, from 2-8 P.M. Wednesday, with a vigil prayed at 7 P.M. at their home. In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to The Michigan Peace Team or Loaves and Fishes. The family is being served by the Osgood Funeral Homes.

Helen Mary Kapral

Helen Mary Kapral Pewamo, MI Formerly of Cambridge, WI Helen Kapral, age 91, died Saturday, June 17, 2006 in Mt. Pleasant. She was born October 27, 1914 to James and Mary Prochazka in Clinton County. Helen married John Kapral in 1933 and preceded Helen in death in 1987. She was also preceded in death by her parents; one son, John E. Kapral (1998); three brothers, Jim, Frank, and Robert Prochazka; and one sister Lillian Chaprnka.

Helen is survived by three children, William (Nina) Kapral of Rockton, IL, Sharleen Kapral of Pewamo, and Jerry (Carol) Kapral of Olathe, Kansas; 25 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Vivian Hornak of Chesaning and Frances Sadilek of Yale.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Edgerton, WI. Sympathy may be expressed in the form of memorials to St. Pius X Catholic Church, Edgerton, WI. The family is be served locally by Osgood Funeral Home, St. Johns.

Ardis J. Jegla

jegla_ardis.jpg (4208 bytes)Ardis J. Jegla, 74, died Saturday, June 17, 2006 at Hazel Findley Country Manor. Ardis was born December 6, 1931 in Beebe, MI the daughter of Gerald and Crystal Sanders Pinkney. She was a homemaker. On Auust 9, 1952 she married Robert Jegla in Westphalia. He preceded her in death on Sept. 1, 1982. She enjoyed reading, crocheting and television.

She is survived by her daughters, Annette Jegla of Westphalia and Mary Jo (Mike) Plunkett of Holt; sons, Mike (Sharon) Jegla of Hubbardston MI, Larry of Trufant, MI, Dan (Sharon) Jegla, Dennis Jegla and Rick Jegla all of St. Johns, Kevin Jegla of Kodak, TN; grandchildren, Jessica Johnson, Brandon Newport, Ryan Jegla, Aaron Jegla, Laura Jegla, Nathan Jegla, Jillian Jegla, Eric Jegla, and Victoria Jegla; sisters Beverly (Norm) Schafer of Pewamo, MI, Sharon (Don) Bennett of Hubbardston, MI, Sandy (Jerry) Green of Elsie, MI, Carol (Phil) Fox of Ionia, MI; brothers, Max (Joanne) Pinkney of Pewamo, MI, and Terry Pinkney of Holt, MI.  She was preceded in death by a daughter in law, Gail Jegla.

Funeral services will be held at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, 224-4422 on Wednesday, June 21, 2006 at 11:00 A. M. with Msgr. Fedewa officiating. Burial will follow at Westphalia Cemetery. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Monday and Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorial gifts may be made to The American Cancer Society or the charity of the donor’s choice.

Roland F. Ordiway, 87, retired St. Johns Department of Public Works supervisor, died Wednesday June 14, 2006. Services noon Saturday at Gorsline-Runciman, Lansing.

Theda M. Hull

hull_theda.jpg (5608 bytes)Theda M. Hull, age 99, died Monday, June 12, 2006 in Silver Spring, MD. Born on the family farm May 10, 1907 to Abe and Edith (Payne) Underwood, Theda graduated from Maple Rapids High School the Class of 1925. Theda graduated from nursing college at Hackley Hospital, Muskegon, Class of 1928 and employed as a nurse at Howell T. B. Sanitarium during the 1930’s, Clinton Memorial Hospital during the 1940’s, Carson City Hospital, and some years as a company nurse in a Wyandotte factory. From there she moved to Boulder City, NV and was a nurse there for 15 years, returning to Michigan in 1964.

Theda married Nelson Hull August 5, 1966. They both enjoyed their home in DeWitt, their many trips and vacations in the motor home and were members of Gunnisonville United Methodist Church. They loved square dancing with the Maple Twirlers and Bath Shooting Stars square dance clubs. Theda was an avid bridge player and enjoyed crocheting many afghans for family and friends. Theda and Nelson lived in Zephyrhills for a number of years prior to Nelson’s death at which time she moved to Silver Spring, MD to be near grandchildren.

Theda is survived by her grandchildren, Mary Lisa (Peter) Pittroff of Laurel, MD, Troy (Vivian) Urban of Flora Vista,NM and Sean (Mary Anne) Urban of Chevy Chase, MD; great grand children, Kerri (Jimmy) Davis of Guam, Angela Urban, Theresa Urban both of Flora Vista, NM, Robert Urban, Julia Urban of Chevy Chase, MD;one brother, Robert L. Underwood of Maple Rapids; two sisters, Maple Upton Hicks of Maple Rapids and Lorraine Wright of Lansing; Sister-in-law, Evelyn Underwood of Maple Rapids and many devoted nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. Theda was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son, Duane "Bill" Urban; three brothrs, Acil, Anzel "Dud", and Merwin "Oak" Underwood; two sisters, Reba Craig, Leda "Jack" Husted; sister-in-law, Madge Underwood and brothers-in-law, Verne Craig, Donald Upton, Elston Hicks, Marion"Buck" Husted and Clinton Wright.

Funeral Services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 17, 2006 at Congregational Christian Church, Maple Rapids with Pastor Jerry Kissling officiating. Interment will be in Carson City Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call at the Abbott Chapel of Osgood Funeral Homes, 509 E. Main Street, Maple Rapids, Friday from 5:00 – 8:00 P.M.

George Elwin Passmore

Bishop Emeritus, Diocese Of Fargo

sullivan_james.jpg (3543 bytes)James Stephen Sullivan's death Monday June 12, 2006 was due to complications from Alzheimer's disease. He was born July 23, 1929, in Kalamazoo, MI, the son of Stephen and Dorothy (Bernier) Sullivan. He attended St. Augustine Elementary School in Kalamazoo and attended high school and two years of college at St. Joseph Seminary, Grand Rapids, MI.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Sacred Heart Seminary in Detroit in 1951, then entered St. John Provincial Seminary in Plymouth, MI, where he received his theological training. He was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop Joseph H. Albers on June 4, 1955, in Lansing, MI. He served as a parish priest in Flint, Lansing and St. Joseph, all in Michigan. He also served as a visiting priest at St. Joseph, St. Johns.  He served as secretary for Bishop Albers and Bishop Alexander Zaleski, then served as Assistant Chancellor and Vicar General to Bishop Zaleski, with additional assignments as Vocations Director and Founder of Liturgical Publications in Lansing.

On Sept. 21, 1972, he was appointed Titular Bishop of Sicessi and Auxiliary Bishop of Lansing. On April 2, 1985, he was appointed Bishop of Fargo and was installed as the sixth Bishop of Fargo on May 30, 1985.

Bishop Sullivan served as Episcopal Liaison for the Cursillo Movement in the United States, as President of the World Apostolate of Fatima and Episcopal Liaison to the Catholic Marketing Association. He also served on the advisory board of Catholics United for the Faith and several committees of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. Within the Fargo Diocese, Bishop Sullivan oversaw the formation of the Fargo Catholic Schools Network and instituted the Opening Doors, Opening Hearts program of evangelization.

Bishop Sullivan retired on March 18, 2002, and resided at the rectory at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Fargo before moving to Rosewood on Broadway (Nursing Home) in Spring 2006.

Surviving are three sisters, Barbara Jean Sullivan, Sister Marilyn Sullivan and Rosemary Barnum, all of Kalamazoo; two nephews, Stephen (Galyn) Barnum and their children, Trevor and Tyler, and James (Kris) Barnum and their children, Stephen and Ashley, all of Kalamazoo; and numerous brother priests. He was preceded in death by his parents, Stephen and Dorothy Sullivan, and his brother-in-law, Ted Barnum.
