Illah M. Martens

martens_illah.jpg (4596 bytes)Illah M. Martens died on Monday, August 28, 2006 at the age of 89. She was born in Riley Township, on November 8, 1916, the daughter of Fred and Martha (Burgwhat) Schaefer and lived in Riley Township all of her life. She was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, Ladies Aide, Over 50 Club, and the Widows and Widowers. Illah married Walter Martens April 27, 1938 and he preceded her in death October 16, 1986.

She is survived by nieces/nephews, Elaine (James) Jackinchuk of Lansing, Karl (Margaret) Schaefer, Ilene (Terry) Gibson, Everett (Ellen) Martens, all of St. Johns, Lester (Dorothy) Sehlke of Fowler, and Gary (Karen) Martens of Gaylord. In addition to her husband, Illah was preceded in death by her brother, Kenneth Schaefer.

Funeral Services will be 11:00 A.M. Friday, September 1, 2006 at St. Peter Lutheran Church, burial at St. Peter Cemetery with Pastor Jeffrey Heimsoth officiating. The family will receive friends 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. Wednesday and 2:00 – 4:00 and 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. Thursday at the Osgood Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to St. Peter Fellowship Hall or Hazel I. Findlay Country Manor.

Henry A. Theis

theis_henry.jpg (4207 bytes)Henry A. Theis died Monday, August 28, 2006 at the age of 78. Born in Westphalia, Michigan, January 7, 1928, he was the son of Joseph and Catherine (Schmitt) Theis and lived most of his life in the Fowler and Westphalia areas. He was a member of Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, the Holy Name Society, the Ushers Club and the Knights of Columbus. He was a farmer and retired from Fisher Body. Henry was always willing to volunteer wherever he was needed. He enjoyed fishing, card playing, and spending time with his family and friends. On October 8, 1956 he married Esther Schomisch and she survives him.

Also surviving are three daughters, Marie of Fowler, Theresa (Robert) Hodge of Ionia and Janet of Lansing; one son Joseph (Jane) of Fowler; four grandchildren, Brittany, Terry, and Tyler Theis and Nicole Hodge; one brother Edwin (JoAnn) of Portland; four sisters, Rosaline Kolp and Christine Smith of Westphalia, Josephine (Jim) Fox of Portland, Catherine (Jerry) Haeck of Grand Ledge; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one sister, Mary A. Smith, three brothers-in-law, Charles Smith, Bill Smith, and Hilary Kolp.

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:30 A.M. Thursday, August 31, 2006 at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, corner of Kent and Maple Streets, Fowler, with the Rev. Fr. Timothy E. MacDonald officiating. Interment will be in Most Holy Trinity Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Goerge Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes, 11112 W. Ionia Street, Fowler, Tuesday and Wednesday 2:00 – 4:00 and 7:00 – 9:00 P.M. Rosaries will be prayed Tuesday 3:00 and 8:00 P.M. and Wednesday at 3:00 P.M. with a Vigil Service Wednesday at 8:00 P.M.

Sandra Hartsuff

hartsuff_sandra.jpg (4699 bytes)Sandra Hartsuff, age 65, died Thursday, August 24, 2006 in St. Johns. Born February 11, 1941 in Lynn, Massachusetts to George and Winifred (Chiofolo) Philcrantz. Sandra retired from GM in 2000 after 28 years of service. She married Roger Hartsuff, June 24, 1977 in Lansing and he survives her.

Also surviving are thirteen children, Chad Hartsuff, Robin Russell, Thomas Russell, David Russell, Julee (Russell) Cruz, Sean Hall, Timothy Hall, Michelle (Hall) Knott, Tamie (Hall) Mendoza, Robert Hall, Dewain Hall, Raedean (Hall) Vaness, Wendy (Hall) Faussett, twenty seven grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Angie Marie Hartsuff and grandson, Brent Knott.

There will be no services or visitation. Sympathy may be expressed in the form of memorials to Hospice Services, Sparrow Foundation, PO Box 30480, Lansing, MI 48909-9986.   The family is being served by the Osgood Funeral Home.

Doris M. Conklin

conklin_doris.jpg (4498 bytes)Doris M. Conklin age 84 of Elsie, Michigan died Saturday, August 26, 2006 at her cottage in Lake City, Michigan. Funeral services will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel on Wednesday, August 30, 2006 at 11:00 A.M. Visitation will be Monday evening from 6-8 P.M. and Tuesday from 2-8 P.M. with family present 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Burial will take place in Riverside Cemetery, Elsie, Michigan. Rev. Ed Snook and Rev. Fred Fischer will officiate.

Doris was born on February 26, 1922 in Lansing, Michigan, the daughter of Paul and Grace ( Thomas ) Remus. She had resided in Lansing, Michigan, moving to Elsie in 1954 and graduated from Eastern High School in Lansing with the class of 1940. On April 25, 1953 she married Keith Conklin in Lansing, Michigan. She had worked for Michigan Milk Producers Association in Ovid, Michigan, retiring in 1984 after 24 years of service. Doris was a member of Elsie United Methodist Church and was a member of the Elsie United Methodist Women’s. Doris enjoyed crocheting and quilting.

Survivors include her husband, Keith Conklin of Elsie, Michigan, 1 daughter, Julie and Mark Semans of Owosso, Michigan, one son, Allen and Wendy Conklin of Elsie, Michigan, 6 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild, 1 sister, Alice Love of Laingsburg, Michigan. She was predeceased by her parents and one daughter Sandy Pretz. Memorial may be made to the Elsie United Methodist Women.
