Robert C. Jones Robert C. Jones died September 4, 2006, at the age of 84. He was born in Raleigh-Durham, NC on August 21, 1922, the son of Edward and Laura (Payne) McDuffy-Jones. He was a former Commercial Steel employee. Robert served his country honorably in WWII, serving in the US Army Air Corp 442 Carrier Group as a Radio Operator. He married Joan Mankin on June 23, 1973 and she preceded him in death on February 13, 2002. Robert is survived by his first wife, Viola Jean Remer of Livonia, his children, Larry (Vicky) Jones of Munith, Thomas (Diane) Jones of Northville, Lorie Halucha of Dearborn, Doreen "DJ" Logan of St. Johns, Mary Kay Logan of Warren, John Joseph Jones of Lincoln Park, Susan (Gerry) Logan-Ferry of Hamtramck and Nancy Jean (Jeff) York of Brighton, his seven grandchildren, Henry (Jen), Lisa (Dave), Bobby, Kayla, Christine, Abigail and Nathaniel, his six great-grandchildren, Shawn, Ryan, Holden, Helena, Dylan, and Faith, his brothers Cecil Jones, Edward (Loveleen) Jones and Jack (Tena) Jones, and his sister, Mary Jones. In addition to Joan, he was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Garland Jones, Claude Jones and Graham Jones, and his sister, Gladys Craig. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00PM on Thursday, September 7, 2006 at the First Church of God, 1063 S DeWitt Rd, St. Johns, MI with Pastor Paul Daniels officiating. Interment will be 1:00PMFriday, September 8, 2006, at Roseland Park Cemetery, Berkley, MI. The family will receive friends from on Wednesday, September 6, 2:00-5:00PM and 7:00-9:00PM at the Osgood Funeral Home, 104 E. Cass St., St. Johns, MI. Funeral service will be held at First United Methodist Church, St. Johns, Michigan on Wednesday, September 6, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Margery Schleicher officiating. Burial in Maple Hill Cemetery, Cadillac, Michigan. Visitation will be Tuesday from 2-8 p.m. with family present 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Trixie was born in Cadillac, Michigan on July 22, 1924 to Verner and Emma Katrina Olivia (Olson) Knapp. She resided most of her life in the St. Johns area, since 1965. She graduated from Cadillac High School with the class of 1942. She married David J. Johnston in Cadillac, Michigan on October 16, 1947. She established and taught children at the Trixies Pixies school of dance for 40 years. Trixies Pixies dazzled Mid-Michigan with tap dancing, acrobatics and baton twirling performances. She was a member of the National Gymnastic Association and was a former Girl Scout Leader. She was also a member of First United Methodist Church, St. Johns, Michigan where she enjoyed baking for celebrations at the church and her family. Trixie is survived by her husband of 60 years, David J. Johnston of St. Johns, Michigan; 1 daughter, Veronica Johnston of San Francisco, California; 2 sons, David Johnston of Burlington, Iowa and Daniel (Brenda) Johnston of Wayland, Michigan; 5 grandchildren; 3 sisters, Virginia Montague, Lela Gallagher, Delia VanBergen; 1 brother, Verner Knapp; and special friend, Cherie (Beauchamp) Wieber of Lapeer, Michigan. She was predeceased by 1 daughter, Patricia K. Johnston, June 2, 2004; her parents; and 1 sister, Dora Richardson. Memorials may be made to St. Johns High School Band, St. Johns, Michigan. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Johns Chapel. James Patrick died September 2, 2006, at the age of 63. He was born in Ridley Park, PA on September 20, 1942, the son of Merle C. and Myrtle Marie (Church) Patrick. He was a former Oldsmobile employee who worked in Quality Control and as a Machinist. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. James is survived by his four children, Laura McGuire and James Patrick, Jr. of Ovid, Ron (Christine) Patrick of DeWitt and Shawn (Jennifer) Patrick of St. Johns, his nine grandchildren, Melissa, Matthew, Stephanie, Joan, Ronnie II, Savannah, Katelyn, Josiah and Benjamin, his brothers and sisters, Merle Jr. (Ruth Ann) Patrick, Joan Fraker, Joyce (Lloyd) McMaster, Michael (Kim) Patrick, and Walter (Theresa) Patrick, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. Graveside services will be held Friday, September, 8, 2006 at 1:00PM, with David Hudgens officiating. Jeannette M. Keck died Friday, September 1, 2006 at the age of 83. She was born October 14, 1922 in Six Lakes, MI the daughter of David Emerson and Belle (Clevenger) Swift. She grew up in Vestaburg and Stanton and was a 1941 graduate of Stanton High School. After high school she moved to Detroit and worked as a housekeeper for 18 months until she saved enough money to go to business school. She moved to Lansing and attended Lansing Business College. After two years of college she went to work at Western Union and REO Motors until after WWII. She then took a job at Michigan Mutual Hail Insurance Co. until she was married. On September 17, 1949 Jeannette married Clarence Keck and together they were members of a card club in Bath and they square danced for over 20 years. She returned to working outside the home and worked at Famous Recipe Fried Chicken in North Lansing for many years. Jeannette was an avid football fan, especially MSU football. Clarence preceded her in death in 1983 and she was also predeceased by four sisters and three brothers. Surviving are two daughters, Jayne (Todd) Phelps of Lansing, Annette (Dennis) Foster of Laingsburg; two sons, Ronald of Laingsburg and Curtis (Karen) of St. Johns; ten grandchildren; three great grandchildren; two brothers, Ted Swift of Silver Springs MD and Robert (Dorothy) Swift of Lady Lakes, FL; sister-in-law, Catherine Simons of Lansing; two brothers-in-law, Clarence Trumbull of Lansing, Lawrence (Shirley) Keck of DeWitt; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel on Tuesday, September 5, 2006 at 11:00 A.M. Visitation will be on Monday, September 4, 2006 from 5 P.M. to 8 P.M. Katherine was born on November 15, 1920 in Ashley, Michigan the daughter of Henry and Carrie (Schaub) Ackels. She graduated from Ashley High School with the class of 1939 and resided most of her life in the Elsie area. In January of 1943 she married Norman Powelson, he predeceased her. Katherine was a homemaker, and also worked as a School Librarian at E. E. Knight Elementary School. Katherine liked to sew, knit and crochet. She was a member of the Elsie United Methodist Church, Elsie Lioness Club, Elsie Literary Club, and MARPS. Survivors include her son, Bruce Powelson of Howell, Michigan, daughter, Donnella Powelson of Grand Rapids, Michigan, brother, Harold Lee and Rhoda Ackels of Howell, Michigan, sister, Margie and Carl Robbenolt of Ashley, Michigan, Special friend of the family, Wendy McLenithan, 2 grand-kittens, Sir Olliver, and T.C. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, 3 brothers Robert, Walter, and Larry Ackels; two sisters Betty Sadler and Helen Powelson. Memorial may be made to Ernest E. Knight Elementary School Library in her memory. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel. Hazel Fifield died August 31, 2006 at the age of 82. She was born on January 2, 1924 in St. Johns the daughter of Alfonso and Minnie (Bigelow) Penix. She was a former member of St. Johns Lutheran Church. Hazel had a deep love of her fellow man which was demonstrated in her willingness to help those in need. It was said of her that "she never met a stranger". Her desire to help others was shown in her work at Rivard's Nursing Home and then later as a caregiver in individual's homes. She married Robert G. Fifield on April 25, 1943 in St. Johns and he preceded her in death on August 17, 1981. Hazel is survived by her son, Bob (Sue) Fifield of Durand, her grandson, Eric Schafer, of Harrison, four great-grandchildren, her brother, Keith Penix of St. Johns and her nieces and nephews.In adddition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Linda Schafer, one grandson, Danny Schafer, two brothers, Lawrence Penix and Kenneth Penix, and her special friend, Albert Schultz. Funeral Services will be 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, September 6, 2006 at the Osgood Funeral Home, burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery with Dave Hudgens officiating. The family will receive friends on Tuesday 2:00 - 4:00 PM and 6:00 - 8:00PM at the funeral home. Terry Lynn Myers age 54 of Ashley, Michigan died on Saturday, August 26, 2006 at his home. Terry was formerly employed for the Village of Elsie in the D.P.W. department. He is survived by his sister, Delores Peters of St. Johns, Michigan and 1 brother, Allen and Diana Myers of Alma, Michigan. He was predeceased by his son Jason in 2004. Graveside services will be Tuesday, September 5, 2006, 10 A.M. at Duplain Township Cemetery in Duplain Township, Michigan. Pastor Ed Snook will officiate. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Johns Chapel. Sidney Earle Trudgen went to be with his Lord August 28, 2006. Born October 30, 1917 in Ishpeming, Michigan to May (Rose) and William Trudgen, Earle spent most of his life in Lansing where he attended Michigan State University, receiving a Bachelor Degree in Music Education. Immediately following his graduation from MSU, Earle began teaching in Ithaca, Michigan where he met his wife of 63 years, Jenne-Louise McCall. After teaching three years in Ithaca, Earle served his country for 3 1/2 years during WWII as part of the 95th Army Division, spending 16 months of that time in the European Theater. Returning to civilian life, Earle again attended MSU earning his Master degree and started work on his Doctorate degree. He began his music education career at Sexton High School in Lansing prior to becoming the Director of Music for the Lansing Public Schools. Earle was active in church having been the choir director at both First Lutheran and First Presbyterian Churches before becoming the coordinator of Christian Education and the vocal and bell choir director for Westminster Presbyterian Church in Lansing. To many in the Lansing Community Earle was known as "Mr. Music." This was only Earle's first career. Earle retired from the school district, returned to school at Great Lakes Bible College and became an ordained minister. Upon graduating he served as Pastor of the Pinckney Community Congregational Church UCC for 10 years. Earle built a new church during those 10 years and was honored as Pastor Emeritus in 1991. Earle is survived by his wife, Jenne-Louise, his four married children, Debra (Trudgen) and Craig Bourne of Cypress, California, Jennette (Trudgen) and David DeCloedt of Medford, Oregon, David and Marcia (Reiber) Trudgen of Anchorage, Alaska and Corinne (Trudgen) and Jim Kelley of Westerville, Ohio, as well as three grandchildren, Shawn (Bourne) Campbell, Jessica (Kelley) Hamel and Andrea Kelley. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Paul Trudgen. A Celebration of Life memorial service is planned for October 21, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 743 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Lansing, Michigan. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Earle's name to Covenant House, Crystal Congregational Church or Pinckney Congregational Church. Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Lux and Schnepp Funeral Home in Crystal. |
