Doris V. Thompson Doris Thompson died November
10, 2006 at the age of 87. She was born in New Lothrop, Michigan November 11, 1918 the
daughter of Herbert and Alvina (Fletcher) Miller. She was a homemaker. Doris married Cecil
Thompson on January 9, 1939 and he preceded her in death May 27, 2001.
She is survived by her children, Shirley Palatka of Elsie,
Paul (Sandra)Thompson of Weaverville, NC, Sharon (David) Zell of Ovid, and Cinda (Karl)
Vincent of Virginia, eleven grandchildren, and fifteen great grandchildren and her
brother, Earl Miller. In addition to her husband, Doris was preceded in death by her
parents, her brother, Lyman Miller and her son-in-law, Steve Palatka, Sr.
Funeral Services will be 3:00 P.M. Monday, November 13, 2006 at the Houghton Chapel of the
Osgood Funeral Homes, Ovid
with Rev. Bob Prange officiating . The family will receive friends 6-8 P.M. Saturday, 2-4
and 6-8 P.M. Sunday at the funeral home. Sympathy may be expressed in the form of
contributions to Ovid Healthcare Center.
Vera Elaine Hibbler
Vera Elaine Hibbler age 75 of
Elsie, Michigan died Thursday, November 9, 2006 at her home.
Funeral Services will be held at Duplain Church Of Christ St. Johns, Michigan on November
13, 2006 at 11:00 AM. Pastor Dan Cameron and Pastor Don Ruff will officiate with burial at
Riverside Cemetery Elsie, Michigan. Visitation will be held on Sunday, November 12, 2006
from 2-8 P.M with family present 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie
Chapel.
Vera was born in Flint, Michigan on January 17, 1931 the
daughter of Horace Oliver Cecil and Eileen ( Grubaugh ) Wallis. She graduated from Utly
High School, Flint Michigan with the class of 1949. Vera married John William Hibbler on
February 11, 1950 in Flint, Michigan. She was a homemaker. She enjoyed cooking and
collected Teddy Bears. One of her goals was to visit every town in Michigan and she
visited most of them. Vera was involved with missionary work at her church and with the
Vanguards Senior Citizens who met at the church. Vera was a member of Duplain Church of
Christ, St. Johns, MI.
She is survived by her husband Bill Hibbler of Elsie, MI, 2
daughters; Janis & Raymond Fuller of Byron, MI, Connie & Ron Risley of Prescott,
MI, 4 Sons; John & Robin Hibbler of Fremont, OH, Steve Hibbler of Bannister, MI, Stan
& Kathy Hibbler of Elsie, MI, Dean & Jean Hibbler of St. Johns, MI, 19
grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, 2 sisters; Shirley Farrell of Swartz Creek, MI,
Linda May & Fred Stadler of Sand Lake, MI, and 1 brother Kenneth & Betty Wallis of
Lennon, MI. She is predeceased by her parents, and 1 brother Lloyd Oliver.
Memorials may be made to Duplain Church of Christ, St.
Johns, Michigan. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes,
Elsie Chapel.
James Jim Ward
James Arthur "Jim" Ward
died November 9, 2006 at the age of 54. Born in Mason, Michigan on December 4, 1951 the
son of Wayne and Helen (Mayer) Ward. Jim worked at Dana Corporation in St. Johns until
March 2006 as a machinist and was a member of the St. Johns Episcopal Church, the N.R.A.,
, college graduate, an Eagle Scout and was an avid sportsman as evidenced by his
membership in the North American Hunting Club, Wild Life Forever, Fred Frost's Outdoor
Club, the Steelheader's Association and the Ashley Sportsman Club. He married Carol Samuel
on July 17, 2006 in Trinidad and she survives him.
Also surviving are sons, Todd Ward and Nicholas Ward from
his former wife, June Ann (Brethauer) Ward, his step-sons Jonathan McMillan, Stefan
McMillan, Christian McMillan, his parents, Wayne and Helen Ward, sister, Wendy Ward,
brother, Scott (Jeri) Ward, nieces, Sarah Ward and Kaelyn Ward, nephew, Dylan Ward,
sisters in law, Tina Ward of St. Johns, Sylvia Ramlochan, Esther Herasingh and Christine
Mitchell all of Trinidad and Cinzia Dinapoli of Rome, Italy. He was preceded in death by
brothers, Steve and John Ward and his grandparents.
Funeral Services will held at 2:00 P.M., Monday, November 13, 2006 at the St. Johns
Episcopal Church, 400 E. Walker Street, with the Rev. Richard Anderson officiating. The
family will receive friends 2-4 P.M. and 6-8 P.M. Sunday at the Osgood Funeral Home, 104 E. Cass
St., St. Johns. Sympathy may be expressed in the form of memorials to St. Johns
Episcopal Church or the American Kidney Foundation.
Martin A. Mayer
Martin A. Mayer died November
8, 2006, at the age 76. Born in Portland, Oregon on August 26, 1930, the son of Jacob and
Matilda (Kuntz) Buckmayer. Martin married Cora Stephens in Reno, Nevada on June 27, 1964
and she preceded him in death on July 7, 2004.
Surviving are his children, Chuck (Maurie) Feise of Lansing, Judy (Darren) Huntsman of St.
Johns, Jim (Brooke) Mayer of Perrinton, Janette (Ken) Spalding of Perrinton, Janeen Taylor
of Maple Rapids, Joe (Kristina) Mayer of St. Johns, grandchildren, Jacob, Jon and Kyle
Feise, Ryan, Kimmie, Christopher, Billy and Haylie Mayer, Zach and Aaron Taylor, Renn and
Sara Spalding, Caitlin, Janna and Joellen Huntsman and sisters, Betty Cook and Frances
Bloyer, both of Portland, Oregon. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his
parents, grandson, Benjamin Spalding and three siblings.
Graveside services will be held noon Monday, November 13, 2006 at Fulton Township Cemetery
with Tom Cavanaugh officiating. There will be no visitation. Arrangements by the Osgood Funeral Homes.
Albert J. Pierce
Albert J. Pierce DeWitt, MI
Age 81, died Sunday, November 5, 2006 at Sparrow Health Systems in Lansing. Mr. Pierce was
born December 22, 1924 in Holt, Michigan, the son of Burr and Mary (Swathwood) Pierce. He
was the past owner and proprietor of Darling Builders Supply company in Lansing for 33
years before his retirement in 1980. He served during WWII in the South Pacific in a
medical detachment for the 82nd Signal Battalion. He was a proud past member of the DeWitt
school board, raised his family in that area and divided his time between there and
Florida where he and his wife Irene had many good friends. He was a generous, caring and
loving husband, dad and grandfather. He and his wife, Irene Zeeb Pierce, who survives him,
were married May 26, 1984.
Also surviving are sons, Michael (Carol) Pierce of Lansing,
Patrick (Linda) Pierce of Traverse City; daughter, Brenda (Raymond) Wade of DeWitt;
stepchildren, Brian (Debra) Zeeb of Dewitt, Christine (Marty) Levy of Santa Clara, CA,
Jeff (Jean) Starrak of Ft. Myers, Florida, Brett (Beverly) Starrak of Dimondale, Tim
(Angie) Starrak of Ft. Myers, Florida, Scott Starrak of Ovid; and grandchildren; Brett
Pierce, Brad Pierce, Suzie Wade, Andy Wade, Michael Peters, Nikki Fowler, Joel Zeeb, David
Starrak, Joel Starrak, Tony Starrak, Maria Starrak; 5 great-grandchildren; and sisters,
Sondra (Gerald) Hughes of Charlotte, Cheryl (Roland) Deadman of Harrison. He was preceded
in death by his parents and sister Catherine (David) Lewis of Flint.
A memorial gathering will be held from 3:00-5:00 p.m.
Thursday, November 16, 2006 with a memorial service at 4:30 p.m. Pray Funeral Home,
Charlotte, MI with Pastor Robin Crouch officiating. If desired, memorial contributions may
be made to the American Diabetes Association or the American Heart Association. Our thanks
go out to all of the family and friends who have shown their support. A special thanks
goes to the doctors and staff at the Sparrow Hospital Neuro ICU for the care and support
