Oneta Barthel

barthel_oneta.jpg (3919 bytes)Oneta Barthel died December 10, 2006, at the age of 98. Born May 15, 1908 in Maple Rapids, Michigan the daughter of Jesse P. and Jessie M. (Temple) Crawford. She was a teacher in Ovid and Lansing schools. Oneta was a member of the United Church of Ovid and the Ovid Historical Society. On August 22, 1937, she married Willard E. Barthel in Bristol, Indiana and he preceded her in death October 9, 1992. Oneta was also preceded in death by her daughter, Carol Barthel on February 15, 2001.

She is survived by her cousin, Georgina (Ed) Davidek of Flint, MI, nephew, Earl (Borgie) Bailey of Granger, IN, niece, Barbara (Joe) Knauf of Lowell, MI, cousin, Molly (Temple) and John Howell of Bellevue, WA, special friend, Arlene (John) Pesik of Ovid, MI.

Funeral Services will be 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, December 13, 2006 at the Osgood Funeral Home, St. Johns. Visitation will be 4-7 P.M. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Ovid Historical Society or Ovid Library.

Margaret J. Higgins

higgins_margaret.jpg (3434 bytes)Margaret J. Higgins died Monday, December 11, 2006 at the age of 70. She was born May 29, 1936 in St. Johns, MI the daughter of Vern and Clara (Hoover) Bond and lived all her life in the St. Johns area. Margaret was a 1955 graduate of Rodney B. Wilson High School in St. Johns and enjoyed bowling, playing cards and working with ceramics. She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She was a homemaker and worked for several housekeeping companies. On January 7, 1956 she married George Higgins and he survives her.

Also surviving are two sons, Steve (Cindy) Higgins and David (Brenda) Higgins all of St. Johns; three grandchildren, Marc, Darrin and Megan; two sisters, Joan (Rod) Sutfin of Lansing, Betty Vieth of Laingsburg; one brother John (Kathy) Bond of St. Johns; and special family friend Kay Harris of St. Johns. She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Rosa Bowen and two brothers James and Wilbur Bond.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 am Thursday, December 14, 2006 at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, St. Johns 989-224-4422 with Pastor Scott Lowman officiating. Interment will follow at South Bingham Cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives 6-8pm Tuesday and 2-4 and 6-8 pm Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Sparrow Hospice or Grace Chapel.

Keith Tiedt

tiedt_keith.jpg (4075 bytes)Keith E. Tiedt, 71 or rural St. Johns died Saturday, Dec. 9, 2006 following a battle with cancer. Keith was born on April 21, 1935 in St. Johns the son of Erwin and Leona (Rossow) Tiedt. He was a farmer and served in the U.S. Army, enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling, playing cards and in his earlier years loved playing softball.On May 14, 1955 he married Eunice George in Fowler.

He is urvived by his wife Eunice; children, Terri Snider, Rhonda and Kevin Burns, Michael and Paula Tiedt and Eric Tiedt all of St. Johns; grandchildren Joshua Snider, Matthew Warr, Jennifer, Rachel and Aaron Burns, Stephanie and Miranda Tiedt; great granddaughter Caitlyn Snider Mother Leona Tiedt of St. Johns; his brother Jerold and Kay Tiedt of Grand Rapids.  He was preceded in death by his father, Erwin in 1994.

Funeral services will he held on Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2006 at St. Paul  Lutheran Church in Fowler at 11:00 A.M. with Pastor Paul Clark officiating. The family will receive friends at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, 989-224-4422 on Sunday, Dec. 10, 2-8 P.M. and Monday, 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Memorials may be given to McLaren Hospice or St. Paul Lutheran Church.

Mark P. Barber

barber_mark.jpg (3532 bytes)Mark P. Barber of St. Johns, died Friday, December 8, 2006 at the age of 55. He was born October 3, 1951 in St. Johns, MI the son of William and Harriet (Palmer) Barber. Mark was a 1970 graduate of St. Johns High School and attended Alma College. He was a member of First
Congregational Church and the St. Johns Cemetery Association Board. He was a former Rotary Club member and was a member and Past President of the former Clinton County Country Club. Mark was an enthusiastic member and supporter of the Republican Party and enjoyed golfing and spending time at Higgins Lake and Beaver Island. He had a great sense of humor and loved spending time with his family and dogs, Winston, Norman and Reagan. Mark always had a tremendous interest in the weather, be it watching a report on television or sitting on the porch during a summer thunderstorm. Mark was a self-employed painter and decorator and loved doing historic building restoration, as is evident by the many buildings in St. Johns that he and his co-workers restored.

Surviving is his life partner Terry Ann Theriac of St. Johns; two daughters, Katherine (Joe) Wolfe and Abby Barber all of Minneapolis, MN; one sister Anne Sallaz of St. Clair, MI; two brothers, David (Judy) Barber of Surprise, AZ and Robert Barber of Ann Arbor; grandson Mark Wolfe; nieces and nephews Bill, Scott, Alex, Wyatt, Tracy, Hailey, Randy, and Ross.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 pm Monday, December 11, 2006 at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, St. Johns 989-224-4422 with Rev. Cayle Beagle officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Rest Cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives 2-4 and 6-8 pm on Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Depot Center for the Arts or St. Johns Cemetery Association.

Thelma Haver Jenkins

jenkins_thelma.jpg (4059 bytes)Thelma Haver Jenkins, longtime resident of St. Johns and more recently of Traverse City, passed on to the Kingdom of God December 1, 2006 at the Traverse City Hospice House. She was 88 years old.

Thelma was born in rural Cheboygan County April 23, 1918, the second child of ten, and oldest daughter of William and Myrtle Haver. The family lived in Cheboygan and Mackinaw City during her childhood years. Following graduation from Petoskey High School in the spring of 1936, she attended General Motors Institute in Flint studying secretarial science. She was employed by the State of Michigan Social Services Department assigned to Hart Michigan where she met and married C. Lester Jenkins in 1940. Following her marriage, Thelma was a homemaker for her husband and three children including Thomas (Judy) Jenkins of Traverse City, Charles (Debbie) Jenkins of Honolulu, and Dorothy (Ted) Meier of Frankfort. Thelma had eight grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Thelma is also survived by three sisters and three brothers. She was preceded in death by her husband Lester in 1998.

Thelma was very active in her church in Hart and St. Johns and was a charter member of the Hart Methodist Women’s Society and also the Order of the Eastern Star. She served the community of St. Johns for several years as the City Hostess and enjoyed her many friends in their monthly Supper Club. In later years, Thelma was very active tracking down her families’ genealogy and leaves a rich heritage of information to her future generations. Upon Les’ retirement they summered at their lake home on Silver Lake in Oceana County and wintered at Lakeland Florida. They returned to St. Johns in 1994 and Thelma moved to the Traverse City area following the death of her husband to be near her family who will remember her loving concern and strong will that guided them to adulthood. She will be especially missed by her grandchildren who spent many happy days at her home on Silver Lake.

Funeral services will be held December 9  at 3 p.m. at the Williamsburg United Methodist Church where visitation will take place from 1 p.m. until the time of service. Internment of ashes will be in Hart Cemetery. Memorials to the memory of Thelma may be directed to Hope Village, 4354 Mt. Hope Road, Williamsburg, MI 49690.

Oliver C. Darling

darling_oliver.jpg (4242 bytes)Oliver C. Darling age 77 of Elsie, Michigan died Wednesday, December 6, 2006 at Carson City Hospital Carson City, MI.

Funeral Services will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel Elsie, MI on Saturday, December 9, 2006 at 11:00 AM. Pastor Edwin Snook will officiate with burial at Riverside Cemetery Elsie, Michigan. Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 7, 2006 from 6-8 P.M. and Friday, December 8, 2006 from 2-8 P.M. with family present 2-4 and 6-8 P.M.

Oliver was born in Eaton County, Michigan on December 17, 1928 the son of Vern and Gladys ( Thompson ) Darling. He resided most of his life in the Ovid-Elsie Area graduated from Ovid High School with the class of 1947. He played the bass drum in band. Oliver married Barbara Fruchey on May 24, 1947 at the parsonage in Ovid, Michigan. Oliver owned and operated Darling's Hardware with his brother Harvey since June of 1957 when they bought Wooley's Hardware. He ran the Elsie Hardware until 1979, and then worked in Ovid until 1991 when he semi-retired until they closed in 1996. He was a Master Electrician and held a Doctor Degree in small tool repair from Wisconsin. At age 16 he was the youngest licensed pilot to fly from the Elsie airport, and in his early years he was assistant scout master in Ovid. Oliver was an active member of Elsie United Methodist Church where he served on special committees. He was also a member of the Elsie Masonic Lodge, and a Noble Grand in the Odd Fellow Lodge. He was a former president of the Elsie People Association, now known as the Elsie Improvement Association, where he also served as the treasurer for awhile. He also served as treasurer for the Clinton Memorial Hospital for years. He was the Grand Marshal of the Elsie Dairy Festival in 2002.

He is survived by his wife Barbara Darling of Elsie, MI, daughter-in-law Regene and the late David Darling of Elsie, MI, 4 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, brothers; Harvey and Doris Darling of Ovid, MI, Ivan and Ruth Ann Darling of Engidane, MI, and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents, son David on May 16, 2004 and son Dennis on March 8, 1999.

Memorials may be made to Elsie United Methodist Church. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel.

Mary E. McCreery

mcreery_mary.jpg (4516 bytes)Mary E. McCreery, age 75, died Wednesday, December 06, 2006 at Hospice House of Mid-Michigan in Lansing. She was born April 20, 1931 in St. Johns the daughter of Charles and Bernice (Goodrich) Carroll. Mary was a homemaker, worked for Ovid School System and in the medical field until her retirement. On October 15, 1950 she married Richard Wendall "Scab" McCreery in St. Johns. He preceded her in death on April 25, 2006. She enjoyed reading, homemaking and loved to cook. She was known as "Grandma and Grammy" to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church.

She is survived by daughter, Susie G. Cole of Lansing; grandchildren, Jessie and Alex Bedoway, Josh and Kirsten Cole, Shannon and Abdiel Rocha, Gavin McCreery, Tessa McCreery and Chloe McCreery; and great-grandchildren, Vivian, Justin, Evalyn, Kailin, Taylor, Cole, Shan and Annabel. Preceded in death by son Richard in 2001. The family will receive friends at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, St. Johns, 989-224-4422 from 4-9 p.m. Wednesday evening and on Thursday from noon until service time.

Funeral services were held at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home on Thursday, December 7, 2006 at 3:00 p.m. with Pastor Dan Cameron officiating. Burial will take place at Maple Grove Cemetery, Ovid. Carl T. Boak

Carl T. Boak, age 88, died on December 5, 2006. Born July 26, 1918 in Fowler, MI, the son of William and Lula (Waters) Boak. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, was a World War II Army veteran and a member of the V.F.W. Post #4113 and the American Legion Post #153. He retired from Sealed Power after 27 1/2 years of service. Carl married Alma Nobis in Fowler on November 24, 1945 and she survives him.

Also surviving are children, Jeanette (Larry) Barbour and Richard (Cheri) Boak, all of St. Johns, Allen (Carol) Boak of Lansing and Robert (Linda) Boak of Harrison, eight grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, two sisters-in-law, Gladys Boak of Tucson, AZ and Mary C. Boak of Grand Ledge, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by daughter, Eileen Monasmith, his parents, four brothers and one sister.

Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M. Friday, December 8, 2006 at the St. John’s Lutheran Church with Pastor George Brinley and Pastor Paul Clark officiating, burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Thursday at the Osgood Funeral Home. Sympathy may be expressed in the form of memorials to Hazel I. Findlay Country Manor or St. John’s Lutheran Church. Military graveside services provided by St. Johns Honor Guard.

Shirley Mae Silvers

Shirley Mae Silvers died December 4, 2006 at the age of 77. She was born in Lansing, the daughter of Otto and Elizabeth (Vincent) Silvers.

Surviving are two cousins, Joan Moody of Lansing and Mary Jane Miller of Lansing. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Richard Silvers and cousin, Maxine Schaub.

There will be no services. The family is being served by the Osgood Funeral Home, St. Johns.
