Louis J. Schafer

Louis J. Schafer, age 92, passed away on Tuesday, January 16, 2007. He was born on May 16, 1914 the son of Henry and Theresa (Thelen) Schafer. He was a lifelong member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, and founded Schafer Heating in 1947. Louis enjoyed farming, antique tractors, machinery, and crossword puzzles. He graduated from Pewamo High School in 1933, and celebrated 65 years of marriage to Annabel
(Klein) on October 15, 2006. He was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters, an infant daughter, Mary Ann, and grandsons David L. and Patrick J. Schafer.

Surviving are his wife, Annabel; children, Peter (Kay) Schafer of Pewamo, Philip (Ann Marie) Schafer of Westphalia, Bernadette (Walter) Thelen of Westphalia, Larry (Bernita) Schafer of Westphalia, Luke Schafer of Lansing, Patrick (Maureen) Schafer of Westphalia, and Michael (Doreen) Schafer of Westphalia; 21 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; sister, Maratha Hauck of Westerville, Ohio; sister-in-law, Eleanor Schafer of Westphalia; and several sisters and brothers-in-law.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Cecilio Reyna and Fr. Pete Schafer at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, January 19, 2007 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Westphalia. Rite of Committal will follow at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday, and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Thursday at the Westphalia Funeral Chapel, 210 Westphalia St. The Rosary will be prayed at 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday and 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, with a Scriptural Wake Service taking place at 8:00 p.m. on Thursday.  Arrangements by Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, Portland.

Kurt G. Martin

martin_kurt.jpg (4410 bytes)Funeral Services for Kurt G. Martin will be held on Saturday January 20, 2007 at 1 p.m. at the Osgood Funeral Home with Fr. Eoin Murphy officiating.  Visitation will  be held for one hour before the service.  Burial will be in Mt. Rest Cemetery.

Kurt Gerald Martin, 54, of Aurora, Colorado died Tuesday January 9, 2007 in Denver. Kurt was born in St. Johns on November 18, 1952, the son of Gerald and Geraldine (Rahl) Martin. He attended St. Joseph School and Rodney B. Wilson High School and worked for many years as a long-distance trucker.

Kurt is survived by two brothers, Jack (Jean) Martin of Alpena and James (Delphine) Martin of Finley ND; one sister, Joanne Miller of St. Johns; a special aunt, Jean Nuechterlein and her family and a dear friend Sharon, of Denver, CO; one uncle, Richard Rahl of St. Johns; many cousins and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Marilyn.

Irene Linscott

linscot_irene.jpg (3991 bytes)Irene Linscott age 78 of St. Johns, Michigan died Thursday, January 11, 2007 at Carson City Hospital Carson City, MI.

Funeral Services will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Johns Chapel St. Johns, MI on Monday, January 15, 2007 at 11:00 AM. Pastor Dan Cameron will officiate with burial at Eureka Cemetery Eureka, MI. Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 13, 2007 from 4-8 P.M. and Sunday, January 14, 2007 from 4-8 P.M.

Irene was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan on October 17, 1928 the daughter of Lyman and Maude Fisher. She resided most of her adult life in St. Johns, Michigan. She was a homemaker. She volunteered at Eureka Elementary for many years until just recently due to ill health. Irene loved bird watching.

She is survived by her 9 children; Helen and Doug Wiley of Ionia, MI, Fran and Bruce Burgess of St. Johns, MI, Mike Stevens of Alabama, Katie and Ron Alderink of Lowell, MI, Mary Lehman of Holland, MI, Lee Linscott of Lake Odessa, MI, John and Ann Linscott of Rockford, MI, Tom Linscott of Hastings, MI, Sandy and Jim Evans of Florida, many grandchildren and great grandchildren. She is predeceased by her parents, 2 sisters, Sue and Cora, and 2 brothers George and Bob.

Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Johns, Chapel.

Joyce M. Taphouse

taphouse_joyce.jpg (3186 bytes)Joyce M. (Stinson) Taphouse, Age 69, of Owosso, passed away Monday, Jan. 8, 2007, at Memorial Healthcare.  Mrs. Taphouse was a homemaker and worked at St. Johns Nursing Home as a caretaker.

The funeral service was held at Thursday at
Nelson-House Funeral Home with Pastor Burton Kincaid officiating. Burial took place at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens.

Joyce was born July 5, 1937, in Ann Arbor, the daughter of Willard and Helen (Burton) Stinson. She graduated from St. Johns High School.

On May 10, 1968, she married Donald Taphouse in St. Johns. She attended the First Free Methodist Church in Owosso. She loved baking, knitting, going for rides and being outdoors. Joyce enjoyed being with her friends and neighbors. Family was very important to Joyce, and she loved getting together and spending time with them.

Survivors include: husband, Donald Taphouse; daughter, Rose Marie Taphouse; son, James Lee (TeAnna) Taphouse; granddaughters, TeAnna and Jordee Taphouse; nieces, Leanne and Tammy Riddle; nephew, Charles Riddle. She was predeceased by: her parents; son, William Harold Taphouse; and sister, Ruth Ann Riddle.
