Paul W. Roof

roof_paul.jpg (4145 bytes)Paul “Pete” Roof died February 19, 2007, at the age of 87. He was born June 29, 1919 in Lansing, the son of William and Erma (Palmer) Roof. He was a Press Operator and retired from Federal Mogul, a WWII Veteran having served with the Army in the Phillipines, a member of V.F.W. Post #4113, a member of the Clinton County Historical Society, Sons of Union Veterans and a supporter of the Paine-Gillam-Scott Museum. Paul married Ruth Pratt in Rochester Colony on November 16, 1940 and she preceded him in death on February 6, 2007.

Surviving are daughters, Sharon (Bill) Irrer, Paula Reynolds, Pam (Don) Boak and Judy (Gary) Moon, all of St. Johns, son-in-law, Paul Ritz of Houghton Lake, 16 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren, brother, R.V. (Coralee) Roof of Houghton Lake, two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Salter of Six Lakes and Mildred Roof of St. Johns. Also preceding in death was daughter, Katherine Ritz, and grandson Duane Ritz, brothers, Leland, Oliver, Waldo and William and sister, Helen Irish.

Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M. Friday, February 23, 2007 at the Osgood Funeral Home, burial at Eureka Cemetery with David Hudgens officiating. The family will receive friends 6-8 P.M. Wednesday and 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. on Thursday at the funeral home. Sympathy may be expressed in the form of memorials to V.F.W. Post #4113 or Paine-Gillam-Scott Museum. Military graveside services provided by St. Johns Honor Guard.

Mary M. Weismiller

weismiller_mary.jpg (5031 bytes)Mary M. Weismiller, age 83, passed away peacefully on Monday February 19, 2007 at the Hospice House of Mid-Michigan. Mary was born on February 28, 1923 in Victor Township to Otto and Gladys (Potter) Rasmussen. Mary graduated from Laingsburg High School in 1941. She married Ernest West in 1942 and he preceded her in death in 1965. She was a homemaker and worked at MSU, retiring in 1985. In 1987, she married Loyal G. Weismiller, who preceded her in death in 2002. Mary was a member of the Laingsburg United Methodist Church, Victor Township Extension, Farm Bureau, DeWitt Hobby Club, Teehee Club, and the Reed Cemetery Association. She loved to bake, sew, do crafts and tend her many flower gardens, of which she enjoyed sharing with family and friends. Mary's greatest love was that of her family. She will be missed, but tenderly remembered by all.

She is survived by children, Leona M. (Kenneth) Koonter and Gary L. (Martha) West of Laingsburg; grandchildren, Karen Koonter, Amy (Mark) Gugel, Ernie (Jen) West, Mark West (Kim-friend); great-grandchildren, Kaleigh, Riley, Jesse, Ethan and Emma; and one sister, Elsie Remus. She was preceded in death by her parents; by brothers, Ronald and Ernest Rasmussen; sisters, Bertha Steffens, Laureta Milekovich, Josephine Smith, and Margie Huffman.

A celeberation of Mary's life will be held on Wednesday, February 21, 2007 at 11:00 am at the Watkins Brothers Funeral Home in Laingsburg with Pastor Elbert Dulworth officiating. Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 2:00 to 4:00 and from 6:00 to 8:00 at the funeral home. Memorials can be given to Owosso Memorial Hospice or the Laingsburg United Methodist Church.

Barbara M. Darling

darling_barbara.jpg (4506 bytes)Barbara M. Darling age 80 of Elsie, Michigan died on Saturday, February 17, 2007 at Carson City Hospital after a long illiness. Funeral services will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel, Tuesday, February 20, 2007 at 11:00 A.M. Visitation will be on Sunday 6-8 P.M. and Monday 2-8 P.M. with family 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Pastor Edwin Snook will officiate and burial will be at Riverside Cemetery, Elsie, Michigan.

Barb was born on September 11, 1926 in Ovid, Michigan the daughter of Jacob W. and Beulah ( Paxton ) Fruchey She graduated from Ovid High School resided most of her life in the Ovid-Elsie area. On May 24, 1947 she married Oliver C. Darling in Ovid, Michigan, Oliver predeceased her on December 6, 2006.

She worked as the bookkeeper with her husband at Darling’s Hardware in Ovid, she enjoyed being at the hardware at Christmas time boxing and wrapping gifts for customers when stores provided that service at no cost. Barb loved being a homemaker and raising their 2 sons. She also worked at the Elsie Public Library with Orpha Clement. She spent a lot of hours painting for family and friends and made and sold craft items for Dottie’s, a store up by Copper Harbor. She made many afghans and quilts for all her family and friends and was an active member of Elsie United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women and enjoyed working on the church dinners for many years. Barb was a member of the Elsie United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women.

Survivors include her daughter in law, Regene and the late David Darling of Elsie, 4 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. 2 brother in laws, Harvey and Doris Darling of Ovid, MI, Ivan and Ruthann Darling of Engadine, MI, several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Oliver, 2 sons, David on May 16, 2004 and Dennis on March 8, 1999. Memorial can be made to the United Methodist Church, Elsie, Michigan. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie chapel.

Lyle M. Newton

Lyle M. Newton, age 70, passed away Thursday, Feb. 15, 2007, in Owosso. Lyle was born in Perrinton, Mich. He married Lorraine Betz from Ithaca, Mich., in 1954. Together they raised two children, Thomas L. Newton and Penny L. Ungewitter, in St. Johns and later in Traverse City.

Lyle enjoyed his occupation as a tool and die maker at Federal Mogul in St. Johns, and as a supervisor at Clark Manufacturing in Traverse City. After retirement, Lyle and Lorraine moved to Owosso, so that they could be close to family. Lyle will be remembered for his kind willingness to always lend a hand, his faithfulness and integrity towards family, friends and coworkers, and his love to play with his grandchildren.

Lyle will be missed by: his wife, Lorraine; his children, Tom ( Joanne) of Owosso, and their children Andy (Emily) Newton of Tennessee, Patrick, Matthew, Adam and Rebecca, all of Owosso; Penny (Scott) Ungewitter, and their children, Mark, Alexis and Caleb of Castleton, N.Y.; sister, Shirlee (Robert) Vining of Saginaw; brother, John of Sidney, Mich; and many loving cousins, nephews, nieces and friends.

Lyle had asked that a service not be held, however his family will receive family and friends at the home of Tom and Joanne Newton in Owosso on Monday, Feb. 19 from 4 to 8 p.m. Condolences may be sent to: The Family of Lyle Newton, 1223 Adams St., Owosso, MI 48867.

Dwane Wirick

wirick_dwayne.jpg (4927 bytes)Dwane Wirick died Wednesday, February 14, 2007 surrounded by his family at the age of 92. He was born February 28, 1914 to Lynn and Edith (Osborn) Wirick in Bloody Corners, MI. Dwane was a graduate of Jonesville High School where he was a member of the baseball, football, basketball, and track teams. In 1937 Dwane graduated from Central Michigan University with a degree in education and was a member of the C.M.U. basketball team. He later received his Master's Degree from Michigan State University.

He married Barbara Ruth Maxwell in 1942. He served in the U.S. Army in Miami Beach, FL where he supervised the physical reconditioning of patients. Dwane and his family moved to St. Johns in 1946. He was a teacher and coach for St. Johns High School where he coached the 1954 basketball team to the State Semi-Finals. Dwane served in many positions including Athletic Director and Assistant Principal until his retirement in 1976. He then spent time in Elk Rapids, MI and Naples, FL with friends and family playing golf, cards, and the saxaphone.

wirick_dwayne2.jpg (4686 bytes)Dwane enjoyed jazz, a good University of Michigan football or basketball game, old movies and afternoon drives. He and Barbara returned to St. Johns in 2002.

He is survived by his loving daughters, Susan Kuntz of Burlington, VT, Debbie (John) Sirrine of St. Johns, Betsy (Chris) Yanson of Naples, FL; wonderful grandchildren, Katie (Peter Nevin) Kuntz of South Burlington, VT, Aaron (Marni Presnall) Kuntz of Northampton, MA, Bridget Sirrine (Stan) Willis of St. Johns, Bekah Sirrine of New York, NY, Ally Yanson and Peter Yanson both of Naples, FL; and 9 adorable great-grandchildren. He was preceeded in death by his wife Barbara, son Jack, son-in-law Norbert Kuntz and his grandson, Jack Kuntz.

Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday, February 17, 2007 at Osgood Funeral Home, burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery with the Rev. Matt Olson officiating. The family will receive friends Friday from 2-4 and 6-8 pm at Osgood Funeral Home in St. Johns. Sympathy may be expressed in the form of donations to the St. Johns High School Athletic Department or Hazel I. Findlay Country Manor.
