Ano L. Elwood

elwood_ano.jpg (4482 bytes)Ano L. Elwood, of Ovid, died Sunday, March 04, 2007, at the age of 63, at Sparrow Hospital. Born in Ovid Township on August 22, 1943, the son of Myrtle Elwood. He was a member of Trinity Fellowship Church.

He is survived by his sister, Bernice James of Ovid, brothers, Arlie (Jennifer) Bramen of Ovid and David (Karen) Bramen of Woodbridge, VA, numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother and great niece, Mary Duba.

Funeral serives will be 10:30 A.M. Thursday, March 8, 2007 at the Houghton Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes, 232 E. Oak St., Ovid, with burial at Wacousta Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6-8 P.M. Tuesday, 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home. Sympathy may be expressed in the form of memorials to Trinity Fellowship Church.

Dorris M. Eschtruth

Dorris M. Eschtruth, born to Edward and Pearl Greenwood on October 24, 1923 in St. Johns, MI, passed away March 2, 2007 at her home. She was a graduate of Rodney B. Wilson High School, St. Johns, MI. Dorris married Walter Eugene Eschtruth on June 21, 1941. In 1947 they move to Grand Ledge. Once there they joined the Grand Ledge First United Methodist Church where Dorris began teaching Sunday School and taught for many years; an active member of the Methodist Women's Fellowship and served as an Educational Assistant. She was a former Cub Scout Den Mother and active in the Brownie and Girl Scout program. She was a longtime member of the Grand Ledge Camera Club and a member of the Michigan State Holiness Assoc. in Eaton Rapids; enjoyed and spent countless hours doing genealogy, painting and crafts, traveling to their home in Arizona and summer place in Eaton Rapids.

Survivors include her husband of 65 years, Walter; daughter, Lucille Saling of Eaton Rapids; sons, Douglas (Lynne) of Haslett and Eugene (Ricci) of Grand Ledge; 9 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandson. She was predeceased by her parents and two infant brothers.

Funeral services will be held Monday, March 5, 2007 - 12:00 Noon at the First United Methodist Church, 411 Harrison, Grand Ledge, MI 48837, with the Rev. Molly Turner and Tom Evans officiating. Interment at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Bath, MI. The family will receive friends Sunday 1-3 p.m. at the Peters & Murray Funeral Home, Grand Ledge. For those desiring, contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church, Michigan State Holiness Assoc. or Great Lakes Hospice in memory of Dorris Eschtruth.

J.D. Bates

J.D. Bates died February 28, 2007, at the age of 70. Born in Chesaning on April 19, 1936, the son of F.D. and Clara (Bowman) Bates. He graduated from Chesaning Union High School in 1954. He was a veteran of the Army having served in Germany, worked at Midland Ross Corp. of Owosso for over 20 years and made a life-long career of farming, building up a successful sheep farm, one of few in Mid-Michigan. He enjoyed farming, hunting, the outdoors, playing cards, western movies and novels and watching the Discovery Channel. J.D. married Lois Behrens in Saginaw on June 20, 1959 and she survives him.

Also surviving are his children, Jeff (Eufemia) Bates of Tampa, FL, Scott (Brenda) Bates of Ovid and Billie Rae (Keith) Newland of Atlanta, Georgia, grandchildren, Christian and Veronica Bates, sisters, Carol Lee, Emily, Elsie, Evelyn and Edna, several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Beryl and Blanche, brothers, Dewey, Mike and Willard.

Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Monday, March 5, 2007 at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 2510 N. M-52, Owosso, burial at Middlebury Cemetery with Pastor Dave Woodby officiating. The family will receive friends 6-8 P.M. Saturday, 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Sunday at the Houghton Chapel of the Osgood Funeral Homes, 232 E. Oak St., Ovid. Sympathy may be expressed in the form of memorials to Redeemer Lutheran Church.

Harold Tolles

tolles_harold.jpg (5201 bytes)Harold F Tolles died February 28, 2007, at the age of 87. Born in St. Johns on August 21, 1919, the son of Arthur and Hazel Tolles. He was a retired research scientist for the U.S. Government, a veteran of the Merchant Marines, a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Ham Radio Operators Club with the call sign “W8ULD”. Harold married Helen L. Motz in St. Johns on July 5, 1940 and she preceded him in death on March 6, 1999.

Surviving is his daughter, Andrea (Steven) Paulk of Tabernash, CO, son, Ron (Jean) Tolles of Calais, ME, granddaughters, Jessica Paulk of Providence, RI and Nikki (Tom) Brady of Aurora, CO, grandsons, Derek (Brandy) Paulk of Okinawa, Japan, Allen Tolles, Wes Tolles and Dale Tolles, all of Riverside, CA, two great granddaughters, special friend and caregiver, Nadine Catlin. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Kerry Tolles.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, March 3, 2007 at St. Joseph Catholic Church (time pending) with Rev. Fr. Eoin Murphy officiating. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 7-9 P.M. Friday at the Osgood Funeral Home with a rosary prayed at 8 P.M. followed by a Celebration of Life service. Sympathy may be expressed in the form of memorials to Hazel I. Findlay Country Manor. Military services provided by St. Johns Honor Guard.

Dawn Smith

Dawn Elaine (Hill) Smith died February 27, 2007 at the age of 58. She was born February 7, 1949 in Perry, MI the daughter of Martin and Edith (Cramer) Hill. She was a graduate of St. Johns High School, Class of 1967, who enjoyed playing cards, painting and had a deep love of animals.

She is survived by her sister, Billie Hill of Elsie, her two brothers, David Hill of St. Johns and Lee Hill of Muskegon, her step-daughter, Becky Smith of Lansing, 2 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Michael Hill.

A memorial service will take place at a later date.   The family is being served by the Osgood Funeral Home.
