purchased land with a small house on it from the Windfields and built a cement block shop.
He also added more rooms to the house. Consumer Power Co. could not bring him power from
the east at that time. He purchased a 32 volt power plant from Francis Hall. On November

his shop for repairs. He also built grain, corn and hay elevators and wagons from car and
truck axels. Using old manure spreaders he built mint root planters, one of them for a
mint grower near Chatam, Ontario, Canada. He also built three large mint cheese spreaders
for mint growers near St. Johns. In 1962 he closed his shop due to poor health. Later in
1964 he worked as a mechanic for the Temple Co. in Ovid for two years, then one year as a
lathe operator for Dale Hardman in St. Johns. A year later he hired in as a machinist at
Demmer Tool and Die. He worked there for 3 ½ years then at Marsh Pump for four years.
After that he worked as a handy man at Clinton Machine in Ovid and retired from there at
age 64. Augie and Frances took pride in having a nice clean garden. His lawn was always
mowed and trimmed. He even planted walnut trees for the squirrels. Above all he enjoyed
hunting with his son Nickolas and fishing with his whole family at Scalley Lake. Polkas
and waltzes were his favorite music and he enjoyed playing them on his button accordion.
