Leon G. Stump

stump_leon.jpg (4420 bytes)Leon Stump died June 26, 2007, at the age of 73. He was born in Pewamo on October 1, 1933, the son of Frank and Rose (Schafer) Stump. He was a retired worker for Chrysler, a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus in Pewamo. Leon was married to Theresa Schafer on February 9, 1957 in Fowler.

Surviving are his daughters, Pam (Tom) Schrauben, Judy (Stan) Simon, Lori (Kevin) Fox and Brenda (Kurt) Bengel all of Westphalia; his sons, Jim Stump, Bob Stump, Glen Stump of Westphalia, Pat (Pam) Stump, Rick Stump and Randy Stump all of Pewamo. Also surviving Leon are his 17 grandchildren; sisters, Sister Rosanne Stump, S.L.W. of Arlington Heights, IL, Joan (George) Koenigsknecht of Fowler and Sister Julia Stump, S.L.W. of Metairie, LA, sisters-in-law, Susanne Stump of St. Johns and Alice Stump of Pewamo. Leon was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Kathryn Stump and brothers, Robert Stump and Melvin Stump.

Funeral services will be at Noon on Friday, June 29, 2007 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Pewamo, MI with burial at St. Joseph Cemetery with Rev. Fr. Charlon Mason officiating. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 7-9 P.M. on Wednesday and Thursday at the St. Mary’s Chapel in Westphalia with rosaries at 3 and 8 P.M. Wednesday and 3 P.M. Thursday. There will also be a vigil service 8 P.M. Thursday. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church or to Sparrow Hospice. The family is being served by the Osgood Funeral Home.

Josephine Reese

reese_josephine.jpg (4466 bytes)Josephine Reese died June 25, 2007, at the age of 97. She was born in Duplain Township on August 23, 1909, the daughter of Harry and Lydia (Fish) Cleveland. She was a member of First Christian Church of Disciples in Lansing. Josephine married Elmer Reese in Lansing on May 25, 1935 and he preceded her in death on January 23, 1988.

Surviving is her son, Terry (Joyce) Reese of St. Johns, daughters, Linda (Arthur) Howard and Judith L. Reese, all of St. Johns, 7 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, special friends, Dr. Herand (Glenys) Garapetyan, Dr. Eleanor Berden and Richard (Barbara) Fenby, many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Debra E. Reese.

Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Friday, June 29, 2007 at the Osgood Funeral Home, burial at Duplain Cemetery with Pastor Larry Smith officiating. The family will receive friends 6-8 P.M. Wednesday, 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home. Sympathy may be expressed in the form of memorials to Ovid Healthcare Center.

Bernice M. Schueller

schueller_bernice.jpg (4452 bytes)Bernice M. Schueller of St. Johns, MI died Sunday, June 24, 2007 at the age of 69. Bernice was born September 22, 1937 in Bengal Township, Clinton County, Michigan the daughter of Edwin and Laurine (Nurenberg) Schueller, and resided in St. Johns most of her life. Bernice earned her G.E.D. from St. Johns High School and enjoyed knitting, bowling, fishing, travel and BINGO. Bernice was preceded in death by her parents and special friend Tom Bennett.

She is survived by her brothers, Gene (Larine) and Larry (Nancy) Schueller all of Portland, Brian Schueller of Charlotte and sisters Darlene (Phil) Hulings of Thornton, CO, and Karen (Don) Spohn of Laingsburg. She is also survived by Tom’s sons Mark Bennett of St. Johns and Scott (Carey) Bennett of Waitsfield, VT, and their children Rebecca (Mark) Feldpausch, Ian, and Francesca Bennett, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:30 am Friday, June 29, 2007 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 109 Linden, St. Johns with Rev. Fr. Thomas Thompson as Celebrant. Rite of Committal will follow at Mt. Rest Cemetery. The family will receive relatives and friends 6-8 pm Wednesday and 2-4 and 6-8 pm Thursday with a vigil service at 7:00 pm Thursday at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, St. Johns 989-224-4422. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or American Diabetes Association.

Margaret R. Smith

smith_margaret.jpg (4125 bytes)Margaret R. Smith, age 101, passed away on June 25, 2007 at Ovid Healthcare Center. Mrs. Smith was born on March 18, 1906 in Elba Township. She was the daughter of Thomas Dwight and Nellie (Berry) Van Douser. Margaret married George Smith in 1926. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1975 along with two sisters, Winifred Helms and Doris Paul, and three brothers, Fred, George, and Ira Van Douser. Margaret is survived by two daughters, Lois Jean and Mahlon Nichols of Weidman, MI and Joan Butler of Wooster, Ohio, 8 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, and 4 great great grandchildren.

Margaret and George spent most of their life in St. Johns. She retired from Clinton Memorial Hospital as a nurse’s aide after 25 years. Margaret loved the community and served as a volunteer at Hazel Findlay Manor and provided hours of entertainment as a member of the Clinton County Senior Citizens Band. She was affiliated with the Grove Bible Church and a long-time friend of Rev. and Darlene Prange. She enjoyed her home, flowers, and grandchildren.

The family wishes to express their appreciation for the loving care provided by the staff of the Ovid Healthcare Center and most recently Great Lakes Home Health and Hospice. Memorials may be made to Grove Bible Church, Ovid Healthcare Center, or Great Lakes Home Health and Hospice.

Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M. Saturday, June 30, 2007 at the Osgood Funeral Home, burial at Mt. Rest Cemetery with Pastor Robert Prange officiating. The family will receive friends 11 A.M. – 1 P.M. Saturday at the funeral home.

Timothy L. Sanborn

sanborn_tim2.jpg (5046 bytes)Timothy L. Sanborn, 56 passed away suddenly on June 22, 2007 while working a fire with Clinton Area Fire Rescue in Clinton County. Tim was born on March 30, 1951 in Flint MI the son of Laverne and Rose Marie (Jones) Sanborn, and graduated from Clio High School in 1969. He worked for Fisher Body and Chevy manufacturing, both in Flint and for BOC in Lansing. After 34 years of service he retired in June of 2006. Tim enjoyed golf, fishing, hunting, and fast pitch softball.  Tim was a retired member of the Birch Run Fire Dept after 2 years of service and was an active member of Clinton Area Fire Rescue for 5 years.

He leaves behind his loving wife, Marie (Matzke) whom he married March 26, 1976 in Clio, MI; daughters Shannon and Tim Freeland of Port St. Johns, FL, Lisa Sanborn and Fiancé Derek Smith and Amy Sanborn, both of St. Johns. He was "Grandpa" to Ben Freeland of Hyde PA, and his CAFR family. Sister, Debbie Benner and special friend Dale Curtis of Clio, Step father Russell Lund. Step sisters, Anne and Al Strominger, Cindy and Bob Thompson, Debbie and Steve Butts, Becky Bruce and Barb Lund. Step brothers, David and Sharon Lund and Rusty Lund. He also leaves behind several nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, infant sisters Lisa Marie and Lori Ann Sanborn, Grandparents Wallace and Rhea Jones and Franklin and Ethel Sanborn, Father and mother in law Bill and Stella Matzke.

The family will receive friends at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home Monday and Tuesday, 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, June 27, 2007 at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home with Pastor Rod Kalajainen officiating.

Louise Ann Burns

Louise Ann Burns, Hubbardston, age 90, passed away during the evening hours of Wednesday, June 20, 2007, at the Carson City Hospital with her family at her bedside. Louise was born April 4, 1917, the daughter of Nicholas and Margaret (Thelen) Koenigsknecht in Fowler, Michigan. She was married to Jeremiah Burns, on May 8, 1945 at Most Holy Trinity Church in Fowler, sharing life together for over 60 years. Mom was very lonely after Dad's passing on December 18, 2005. Louise was a member of St. John the Baptist Church in Hubbardston and an active member of the Altar Society. During the war and before marriage she worked in a spark plug factory in Ionia making spark plugs for bombers. Her family was very special to her. She was an excellent cook and was dedicated to the needs of her husband and boys. Louise loved to play cards and travel. She was an avid sports fan, regularly attending her sons' sporting events while they were in school and a also closely following those of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved watching the Detroit Tigers baseball games.

She is survived by 7 sons, Dan (Toni), Fenton, Ed (Martha), Lexington, KY, Bernie (Terry), East Lansing, Arnie (Debbie), Saginaw, Mike (Lynn), Ann Arbor, Louie (Karen), Granite Bay, CA, Paul (Carol), Sanford; one daughter-in-law, Sue Burns, Dimondale; 22 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren; 3 brothers, Roman (Mary Ann), Frank (Joann), and Beno Koenigsknecht; 3 sisters, Susie Stump, Rose Smith, and Agnes (Leon) Keilen. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jerry; one son, Mark; 6 brothers; and 2 sisters.

Visitation will be at the Lux and Schnepp Funeral Home in Carson City on Saturday, June 23 from 6-8 p.m. and Sunday 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. with a Rosary service at 7:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held Monday, June 25 at St. John the Baptist Church, Hubbardston, at 11:00 a.m. with Father William Koenigsknecht officiating. Interment will be in St. John the Baptist Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Alma College, The American Cancer Society, or St. John the Baptist Church.

Gilbert Z. Barish

Gilbert Z. Barish, Lansing, born February 14, 1917 in Patterson, New Jersey; passed away June 19, 2007 in Lansing, MI, at the age of 90. His family settled near Elsie, MI when he was 4 years old, where he then lived most of his life in Gratiot and Clinton Counties. In 1944, Gil married his dear and loving sweetheart of two years, Phyllis G. (Garner). He was a loving husband to her for almost 56 years, until her death in 1999. Gil loved old cars and trucks which led him to own and manage Gil Barish's Complete Auto Repair Service for 55 years, but may be known best for his snowmobile business and sweet corn. He loved fishing, hunting and all outdoor activities, including some farming, which he shared with his wife and three sons. Gil was also a member of St. Gerard Catholic Church.

Surviving are sons, Gene (Nancy) Barish of Wacousta, Gilbert L. (Ruth) Barish of Elsie, and Richard Barish of Lansing; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, June 26 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Gerard Catholic Church with the Reverend John P. Klein, Pastor of St. Gerard Catholic Church officiating. The Rite of Committal will follow in Payne Cemetery, Maple Rapids, MI. The family will receive friends at Gorsline-Runciman Funeral Homes, 205 E. Washington, DeWitt on Sunday from 2:00-4:00 p.m. and again on Monday from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. The Rosary will be prayed at the funeral home on Monday at 7:00 p.m. Those desiring may make a contribution to St. Gerard Catholic Church, Building Fund, 4437 W. Willow, Lansing, MI 48917 in memory of Gilbert Z. Barish.

William ‘Bill' A. Werner

William ‘Bill' A. Werner, age 67 of Oakley, passed away Saturday, June 23, 2007, at Covenant Hospital in Saginaw. Bill was the owner and operator of Oakley Machine since 1983.

The funeral service will be held at Misiuk Funeral Home, 202 S. Front St., Chesaning, 11 a.m. Wednesday. The family will receive visitors at the funeral home Tuesday from 2 to 8 p.m.

Bill was born Feb. 27, 1940 in St. Johns, the son of Joseph and Vena (Pope) Werner and resided in Oakley since 1950. He married Donna J. Lienau in Chesaning on May 9, 1964. He served in the U.S. Navy for five years. He loved fishing, hunting and boating. His family was very special to him, especially his grandchildren.

Survivors include: wife, Donna; children, Rhonda (Doug) Johnson of Bronson and Brian (Amanda) Werner of Rockford; grandchildren, Caleb Johnson and Elly Werner; brother, Kenneth (Barbara) Werner of Owosso; sisters, Linda DeVoe and Re´mi Werner of Owosso; mother-in-law, Eleanor Lienau of Oakley. He was predeceased by; his parents; and father-in-law.  Donations may be made to the charity of donor's choice.

Glee R. Bengel

Glee R. Bengal, 61, retired General Motors Corp. secretary, of St. Johns died Monday, June 18, 2007.

The family will receive friends at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home on Sunday 1:00 P.M. until 3:00 P.M. Services will be held at 3:00 P.M.

April G. Bengel

April G. Bengel daughter of Gary and Glee Bengel died June 18, 2007 at the age of 24. She attended Clinton County RESA and Fowler High School and was a member of Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Fowler. She worked at the Second Cup Café at Clinton County RESA.

April is survived by her grandparents Bernard and Jean Bengel of Westphalia and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

A memorial service will be held 3:00 pm Sunday, June 24, 2007 at Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, St. Johns with visitation from 1:00 pm until service time. Debra Elizabeth Hornbeck

Debbra Elizabeth Hornbeck, of St. Johns, died Tuesday, June 19, 2007 at the age of 33. She was born October 31, 1973 in Cordell, Georgia. She was a graduate of Grove Christian School, a member of Grove Bible Church and worked as a waitress at several restaurants.

Surviving are her parents Harold and Marilynn Hornbeck of Ovid; one sister, Valerie (Robert) Nethaway of Ovid; five brothers, Darryl (Teri) of Wasilla, AK, Kevin of Lansing, Dwayne (Debra) of Ovid, Ralph of Ovid, Timothy (LueAnn) of Bradenton, FL; several nieces and nephews and many friends.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 pm Saturday, June 23, 2007 at Grove Bible Church 6990 E. Price Rd. St. Johns with Pastor Krag Johnson and Pastor Larry Smith officiating. Ardene Annette Deibert McCallum

Ardene Annette McCallum, 74, passed away Sunday, June 10, 2007 in Anaheim, Calif. Ardene was born May 23, 1933 in Lansing, the daughter of Frances Margaret Doyen Deibert and Basil Arnold Deibert. She was raised in St. Johns, MI, and received a Bachelor of Science degree in public school music at Michigan State University.

She was married Sept. 11, 1954 at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in East Lansing, to James Douglas McCallum, who survives her. She also is survived by her children Kathleen Seidel of Peterborough, N.H., Jennifer Barkenhagen of Norco, Calif., Kevin McCallum of Long Beach, Calif., Marie Berube of Orlando, Fla., Susan Dunne of Ellington, Conn., John McCallum of Laguna Hills, Calif. and Lisa McCallum of Santa Monica, Calif. She also leaves 13 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren; sister, Barbara Beagle, of St. Johns; and brother, Max Deibert of Bozeman, Mont.

She was an accomplished pianist and piano teacher. A teacher for 35 years, she retired in 2006 from the Garden Grove Unified School District, where she taught special education at the Jordan Secondary Learning Center. Her many interests included nature, Native American art, gardening and Scrabble. She was a big bucket of love.

A celebration of her life was held Saturday June 16, at the family home from 1-5 p.m. All who loved her were welcome to share their memories with others who loved her.  In lieu of flowers, Ardene requested that donations be made in her name to the Jordan SLC Student Body Fund, 9915 Woodbury Ave., Garden Grove, CA 92844.
